  • We try to guess what different cutlery layouts signify when eating at a restaurant. We also discuss other restaurant etiquette like waiting time, menu changes and more.

There is Paused and Finished. That is all you need. If you are finished with the course, put your cutlery in the Finished position, They will bring your next course, they know you ordered it, you don't need a different signal for that. If you don't like the food, all the food left on your plate will be a signal to the waiter, not the cutlery position.

its funny, i've always put my utensils down in the "excellent" position. My mom taught me to do it when I was a kid, and we were about to go visit her family in Europe. She ran me and my sister through a "table manners" crash course. I never knew what it meant, I just knew that if I was eating at a fancy place or eating with fancy people, that I should place my utensils on the plate that way when I was done eating. It was one of a number of things like not putting your elbows on the table, and placing your dinner napkin across your lap, which are also things I've retained.

She got 2 right. Top left: Don't like (please remove); Top Right (finished); Bottom Left (excellent and I'm done/please remove); Bottom Middle (ready for next course); Bottom Right (pause; I'm not done, so please do not remove this plate!).

In Europe we do that at home, especially the I am finished or I am just pausing. In restaurants waiters know the signs.

Can you imagine being a sever and having to differentiate between the top left (“didn’t like it”) and bottom right (“paused”)? 🙄

Before you put on a bit about cutlery etiquette, you should learn the proper use of cutlery.
