Filmed with the Canon 1DX MK II
It's such a pleasure to the eye and ear to watch your videos. I'm always immediately sucked in and the 20+ minutes fly by like nothing.
This is a full review. I very much enjoyed listening to your progression through multiple 360 camera's, what you liked and didn't like, and the examples you gave. I truly thank you for making and posting this. Makes me want to look at some of your projects. You seem to genuinely want to create a different experience for those who view your work. That is beautiful.
Phillip Bloom reviews are best reviews.
The Filmmakers Project that’s very kind of you!
I never in a million years would have thought you would see that comment, let alone reply! 😲😱 This just made my day! 😃
Came here looking for the Insta Pro review, but found a nearly flawless state of the VR camera industry master class. Excellent work as always!
My friends and I did a little review of this camera recently... It's really quite an impressive piece of equipment! 360 video is such an interesting medium... A very different mentality is needed than the one needed in standard video. Especially with regards to directing audience attention. Thanks as always for the amazing reviews Mr. Bloom! :)
Yet another product I'm not going to buy, but am going to watch because I love your face
He's cuuuuute ;)
You forgot "no homo" right?
I like your feedback and talking about 360 cameras. I have used GoPro max and qoocam 8k.
VR visors have positional tracking.. So a standard VR viewer is not really interactive...but what I could see is a file converter breaking up a video and using zoom and blur to make it so that when it plays the clips, it SEEMS like you are walking around in the video. If this became popular, they can probably come up with file format for "expanded" 360, where you walk in several directions..the camera uses that direcitonal data to make the file. And then the viewer displays the "tracks" that you can follow if you walk in a specfiic direction to make it feel like you are walking in that direction.
The colour and music of this video has me feel like I'm about to move into palliative care and Philip Bloom is giving me final life advice...and a 360/vr camera..
Looking forward to any 3d test footage. In 2d with a headset I get the "I'm a giant" feeling.
Have to admit, Philip Bloom is an excellent speaker...amazing storyteller!
This camera is amazing but what they don.t tell you is that there isn.t anyway to playback the 8k footage without using an internet streaming service like youtube or visbit both require massive data upload, visbit is a paid service, and youtbue requires massiveltbfast internet connection for 8k). Its like cannon selling 2 video cameras one a 4k and another an 8k. But then saying u can.t actually view the 8k footage taken, its only for recording! (Or u can decrease the resolution, in which case why pay more for high resolution camera)
Surprised the Pro and the Titan don’t include integrated horizon levelling as featured in cameras costing a fraction of the price
Very good review and discussion. Pretty much said what I was thinking. The Insta360 Pro is doing a good job and the results look decent but not fantastic. I've seen a couple of engaging uses of 360 video but for most scenes, I don't think it adds much to the viewing experience compared to a well-edited standard video. Given that the quality of a 360 video is still considerably below what you can get from a standard 4K video camera I don't see it having a lot of commercial potential beyond the 'gee-whiz' factor. That will change in the near(ish) future I expect but as a commercial photographer and sometimes video producer I'm not rushing out to buy any of the 360 video solutions on the market today. On the other hand, for editorial purposes, where maintaining 'brand quality' isn't an issue I think that immersive 360 video has great potential, even at the quality level of the Theta and 360Gear. With a standard camera/video camera the photographer/director/editor can build the narrative they want to put across using selected footage. The 'story' can be told in different ways to suit the message that someone wants to convey. Let's say you were to walk a 360 video camera through a political demonstration for instance. You would be able to see how big crowds actually are by looking around and you could see where the photographer had positioned themselves. No getting a tight shot from an elevated position to make a small gathering look like a larger one. No standing with a pack of 100 photographers documenting 20 protestors without the viewers seeing what's actually happening at the scene. No looking at one group of protestors without showing the counter-protestors standing on the other side of a barrier. So my bottom line - commercial producers propably need to wait until the quality improves, possibly working on how to tell compelling stories in 360 in the mean-time, but editorial producers might want to shooting 360 footage now; I'm interested in seeing it anyway.
Not that far into the future something like Microsoft's now defunct Photosynth experiment, light field rendering and photogrammetry will be synthesized taking imagery from 360 camera rigs and drone shots to reconstruct a completely photo realistic interactive navigable environments.
Speaking of PS4 and PSVR you need to give the game MEGATON RAINFALL a go...that game is brilliant!
Thanks Philip. Any hopes for the GoPro Fusion? It looks like it won't beat the 360 One, from the specs.
The 6 camera gopro rig was used in kendrick lemars music video with wicked results
Now lets put it on a drone! Great review! Very interesting learning about your history with 360 videography.
Hey,
I have a little question. Can I use your videos(Drone footage) as a background for some music if I credit you?
Is this a good camera for filming weddings and making virtual tours?
I hope to rent one. I am hoping to find instructions on how to use it.
That lamp that looks like a lense body is cool!
Hey Philip have you seen the OVER CAPTURE feature of the GoPro Fusion it is absolutely amazing, after you have shot your scene as they demoed it, a guy on a skateboard in a skateboard park places it in the centre of the bowl, he goes for a sake and then with over capture be watches it again and he follows himself around and it creates a video that looks as though he was being filmed by someone with a steadicam.
Richard Bell yeah it’s essentially the same thing as that stuff I showed with the insta 360 one
Great Video Philip. Really liked the segment where you hid before recording such as 12:11 onwards. Where's Wally/Philip... :D
such a lovely video again :) always great to hear your voice :)) thank you 🙏
I'd love to see a followup on this video with the new 2.0 firmware that I've been reading about. Apparently better dynamic range and 12K pics!
It's now generally agreed upon that, on a headset, a 110° view is the most realistic. So you'd need to record 3,27 (360/110) times the resolution you want to display. That would require 12567x6283 for a 4KUHD headset experience and to make it even more realistic it should at least cover 13 steps of dynamic range in 10-bit mastered in HDR. I'm not trying to make it seem unrealistic but we have a long way to go.
Martijn Westerink I think quality of sensor and lens is as important as resolution.
Martijn Westerink plus you don’t need 4K headset really. If the pixels are close to each other you can get away with much less. But yes still a way to go
id love to see you create the worlds first ever 360 documentary that gets shared globally
Another excellent review, thanks Philip! Regarding publishing the final video, how do you plan on doing it, for a client work for example? I have several ideas of stories to create videos, but the medium to show them still seems limited.
Thanks man. I was just looking at this camera today and your review helped a lot. Cheers
Wonderful, informative and professional presentation. Hats off to you sir.
Its getting there slowly. Thanks for another excellent review Philip ;)
I always love watching your reviews... this one especially, as I am really considering the Insta360 Pro (even though technically I can't afford it.) I'm needing specifically a 3D 360 camera, so this seems like the thing to get, but if you have a moment to answer, even with the standard 360 at 8k, how big were your file sizes for a minute's worth of video? I have a feeling I'm going to need a more powerful computer (which I can't afford) or at least more hard drive space...
Philip - have you had a chance to experiment with Jaunt or Yi Halo setups? So far, in our experience, Jaunt provided the best image (if used right...and if one has patience for its workflow). Yet so far, there’s little information available in Yi Halo, which apparently has better stitching, and shoots 6Kx6K in 60fps.
Also, what is your take on the notion that the best 360 and/or stereoscopic VR experience should come in at least 60fps?
Thank you.
should i invest in this for a good rental freelance raket?
Great review and video! I am currently trying the Mi Sphere 360 to start doing my meditation sessions in VR. It does about 7K photos about 24 megapixel, and I feel ya, when your in VR I still feel I want more like 16K to get near HD quality that we are used to. I wanted to get the GoPro fusion, but everyone says the software sucks so bad its barely usable. I am still on the fence about regular 360 vs 3D 360. I feel like the 3D is still not perfect and sometimes has distracting artifacts.
Thanks for this Philip! A quick question - what SSD/SD do you use with the Insta360 Pro? We use a proper ssd but every now and again it would fail the speed test for recording, which is frustrating if you have booked clients in advance and struggle in the day with the SSD... Thanks in advance!
Which 360 camera is the best for pic and video?
Thanks for review, Where do you buy it?
I have two Samsung gear 360 (2017)'s, and I love them, BUT the video quality is not what I want, and even the picture quality is not good for the pro level photography that i'd love to do. Unfortunately, I can't afford $3,000 or more for a camera. Plus, I really wish someone would just make a great 8K camera with the form factor of the Gear 360. Its great for putting on a selfie stick and walking around conventions and other sites..
What about just taking pictures? I can't find a review with the camera indoors taking 360 pictures.
Hi Philip, I was looking at the new Insta360 X3 and was very tempted by it but like you mention about the pro, the quality just isn't up to scratch yet for a VR headset. I was thinking it would be brilliant to set it up in a room to have family members sitting around talking, then years later transport yourself back there. Anyway, my main reason for writing was to ask about if the X3 still might be worth getting and use Topaz AI to enhance the video to 8k? I just keep thinking one day a family member will inevitably pass away and wish I had done the recording and if I wait for that 'perfect' 'affordable' 8K 360 camera I will miss that opportunity. I was just wondering your thoughts about that and trying to enhance 360 footage. Thanks.
Hi Stu, if you want the best image then the Insta360 one rs 1" 360 edition is definitely better than the X3. With Topaz it's excellent.
@@philipbloom Hi Philip, excellent thank you for that info. I shall take a look. Much appreciated.
Hi! Thank you so much for your video review. I'm thinking about to buy this camera in the future. I have just watched the Skiathos video with the Samsung Odyssey windows mixed reality headset ( one with the higher resolution oled in it ) but the resolution was poor compared to the quality I get for the same video on the 4k display on my notebook; do you think the samsung is still a low end device to watch it or the upload compression gave the poor result? Thanks
looking forward to their 12k. have you done the firmware update?
Hi Philip, thank you very much for your advice on video and your blog. I am French and so my English is really school however I can understand your experience with the cameras 360. besides I myself have this passion and I see a promising future in this innovation which is more with a headset vr . I would like to know how you do the effects in 360, how do you go into little planet as well as the effects of camera with the insta 360 pro. would you have any advice to give me to use it professionally since I opened the company on my island and that I wish to film and photograph the points of interest of my island. I just received my insta 360 pro and it's for me the best on the market I had the theta s and I found the videos of a mediocre quality. Thank you in advance for your good luck advice to you
Amazing work !
Were the photos around 12:30 screen shots of video or 360 photos taken with the Insta360?
Really cool video :)
Im looking to do 360˚ content and want to buy the Insta 360 One for this!
Really looking forward to this!
HOLA, PODRIA DARME EL ENLACE PARA DESCARGAR EL SOFWARE QUE USA USTED PARA EDICION DE SUS VIDEOS 360? INTENTÉ VER SI VIDEO 8K 360 PERO SE VE DEMASIADO CORTADO SOLO PUDE VERLO BIEN EN 4K !
You should try go pro's new 360 all in one camera think you'd like it with its water proofing :)
A great great video and review, the first I have seen that was very infomative.
I started with a gear 360, and didnt like the video quality and got a Theta SC and am still disapointed with the video quality, but you my mate have explained it perfectly. I was thinking the same thing about the zooming and the video loss and you just confirmed it. Do you think they will be a cmaera with the quality of this Insta 360 but on a smaller scale any time soon ? I am not put off by the price but more by the bulk of it.
I just reviewed the footage of Skiathos from the Insta360 pro and have to say in all honesty that for the price I am not that impressed with it. If the price was closer to the competition it would be acceptable but not for what its selling for here in the US. $3400.00
like I said before though Great review mate.
PERFECT REVIEW, THANKS!
Where is the GoPro Fusion already tested one?
it isnn't even out yet. Available maybe in December
Seems like a fair and honest review. Thanks!
Dude! You should make a 360 playlist ASAP!!!
Great video, I really enjoy how in depth you go with these reviews! Quick question: any recommendations for starter lenses for a Canon 80D? (I don't reckon you'll read this, but if you do: you're a great inspiration to many of us)
Awesome as always!
Where's Wally? (I mean Philip)
Looks ok. But 360 really doesn't do it for me.
The composition control goes out the window, and that's such a huge part of what I enjoy when creating or watching content.
We piece the world around us together by glancing at one thing and then the next.
With out imagination creating the spaces in between.
And well edited and framed traditional shots work this way too.
360 videos do not allow this in the same way.
Filmed with the canon 1DX MK2? Thats settled it. Im getting one.
Why didnt you do a meet up when you were in skiathos?? Greetings from greece! Also what picture style do you use on your 1dx mkii? You look so cinematic.
Andreas Kryp because nobody would be there plus am on holiday :) i shoot c log and graded with film convert
ok and thank you
Lovin' your work!
You forgot the "m" in from in the description!
curious to know how 2x a7sii back to back (like the kodak) with the Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L would perform compared to this
legendp2011 how would that work?
+Philip Bloom.......I had a look online since posting my comment. and someone did managed to 360 video with 4x sony a7sii with rokinon 8mm lenses, can send you the link if you want (they stitched it together in post), looks like 2x wouldn't be enough........but at that price point it would be cheaper (and easier) just to use the insta360 pro........honestly I'm just speculating here........ thanks for the review of the insta360 pro :)........I don't know if I could justify buying it, but I could see myself renting it for an event shoot, or an imaginative shortfilm
legendp2011 yeah four would work but really that’s not enough it seems like six cameras/ lenses is the minimum. There were multi rigs based around Sony’s A7s camera at ibc sensor (special remote camera that can be synced up) that would be cool image wise but workflow and cost would be horrendous. That’s why I want all in one. Low light is the issue here
Great review as per usual! I have no desire to use 360... just doesn't interest me enough (yet?)
I want to buy it
looking forward to your gh5 review!
Guikri I didn’t know I was doing one!
Philip Bloom now you have :D
Bloom as Bond
Nice video …
Nice inconspicuous car you have Philip
2:39 - Phillip, better Video?
Kodak now makes a 'single camera sized 360° camera' (half the size of the 2 camera version) that reduces the distance between the lenses; dual camera 360 will always be low resolution. If you want pocket sized it's pretty good.
The Nokia OZO has 8 lenses on 2Kx2K cameras with 8 microphones for under £25K. Small and simple but possibly still overpriced.
Want absolute quality and a big Rig (with a ton of wires) then check out Radiant Images' AXA Camera Frame ( www.radiantimages .com/virtual-reality/vr360/1096-axa ).
It holds 12 Cameras and outputs 12K from Sony, Arri, Red, Codex, or BlackMagic Cameras. This provides professional results. They also rent the Rig.
YT,
Rob
please, can somebody tell me the name of a background music track/artist?
basic bejzik just look at the end credits
thanks!
I am more interested in 170 degree video, less quality issues and it lets you get a nice observer experience of an event. 360 is usually boring in most directions.
I think you should look into 169 degree video. It’s 1 degree less boring than 170
Have you tried the Sony playstation VR music demo of the Joshua Bell thing? It is super good, it’s like 180 degrees ish, but you can move your head up and down, lean, all the sound comes from the right direction all in actual video. Very impressive!
thank you
I really want one of these, but the internet speed here isn't even capable of viewing 8K 360 videos lol.
Thanks
Good for real estate viewing.
canturgan just use a cheap stills 360 camera for that.
Wheres the link?
kaimelis what link?
Nevermind, i think there was no link to the 360 footage... now its there
For a minute, I thought Philip was Mr. French from the movie Departed.
0:52. Checkmate flat earthers
I cant even afford the computer to edit this 8k video
OMG
360º videos are boring. The good stuff comes with 180/360º VR 3D videos were you can feel inside the scene.
Cool story bro
@@philipbloom By the way your review is great as always. I'm following you since 2011 and I'm very grateful for your video reviews. I have an VR headset and after watching many VR videos in different formats I've came to the conclusion that the best experience is with VR 180 3D. When I am chilling at home on the couch I don't want to be looking around 360º all the time I just want to relax and enjoy the experience. I think 360º3D is great for gaming . Thx again for you work. Cheers
Great review and very helpful as always - thanks! Here is a 360 film I made about 15 months ago (as secondary output when filming a docu /short film for a conservation charity). We now take this into schools as part of 'Elephant Days' to help raise awareness and educate kids. If you're looking to do a 360 doc maybe come out to South Africa in Jan with us? ruclips.net/video/RU88CE675Vc/видео.html
without 3D you can tap the camera in the garbage bin
Vincenzo Nobile daft comment. Absolutely nonsense...plus if you watch the review properly you will see it has 6K 3D. Thank you.
