    In conclusion Pros VS Cons
    Cons:
    - It takes a long time to start the camera. Not ideal for run and gun 360 videographers.
    - It takes a long time to stitch 8K photos in camera.
    - In camera fan noise - affect audio recording quality (fixed now - has the option to turn the fan off)
    - It can only have up to 1 hour continue recording time b/c of short battery life (recommended plugged-in AC power for long recording session)
    - Gyroscopic Stabilisation is not up to expectation. Hand held gimbal is still recommended in my opinion
    Pros:
    - It can take up to 8K 360 3D still photo. It has RAW DNG output. Great for serious 360 photographers want to post process the photos
    - Good design: Easy to see indication when the camera is recording, even in a distance.
    - It can do 4k Livestream directly onto RUclips and Facebook with mobile app - also has the best quality for 360 Livestream so far compared to all the other camera
    - Solid mobile app to control every aspect of the camera - barcode scan to adjust camera setting feature is step up of the game.
    - Good & easy optical flow stitching. It comes with free Insta360Pro Stitcher software to help fast and accurate stitching. The stitching quality is the best I have seen so far compared to other cameras.
    - High resolution. Far away subjects are still clear and look sharp (no more blurry 360 footage).
    - Amazing customer support from Insta360 team (they have 24 hours support and response time is less than an hour on their facebook group!).
    - In camera Gyroscopic Stabilisation
    - Built in 8K and 8K 3D/Stereo Time-lapse feature: produce beautiful high resolution time-lapse easy
    - Film up to 6K in 3D stereoscopic

    Fantastic review, Hugh! I would say though, if you have a professional shoot, $1500 a day for an OZO rental is probably an insignificant part of your budget for any project that's not just prosumer. I'd love to see you do a proper review of the OZO but if you're a one man band on a budget then this addresses that end of the market, for now at least.

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  7 лет назад

      Yes. I mostly a one man band for the low hanging fruit. But I will review the OZO soon tho. OZO does not improve your quality - and as a matter of fact, many cameras with way cheaper price can shoot way higher quality than OZO. I just don't think OZO worth the cost. Also they drop the price like crazy b/c they know the threat.

    Thank you for making this video.. So I'm looking at buying a used version at a really good price. I'll be using an insta360 One X2 for most things, but I though this might be a good buy for indoor events and parties. One you recommend this for a casual user? Is simple post production work pretty simple, such as creating the videos/photos I want after the event, or do you think this will be too much of a hassle for me?

  • @Aliholic
    @Aliholic 7 лет назад

    Do you have any problems with the post-production stitching of the 8K footage? I tried all 4 modes in the Insta360 software, including the optical flow stitching which is supposed to be the best, but some parts of it still appear "watery" and not very precise. I calibrated it multiple times. What's weird is that the individual lens footage does not have the problem on it, I think it's the problem in the software.

    • @Aliholic
      @Aliholic 7 лет назад

      I just checked the 4K footage example that you posted, and tips for stitching points, and it seems that it's a common issue anyway :-(

    Hi Hugh, wonder if you could help - I'm running into problems with the Insta360 Stitcher software. The forced Hardware Performance Test is always stuck at zero %, even if a let it sit for hours. Strange thing is that I am experiencing this same issue on my Mac Pro, as well as a Windows 7 PC. Everything is current and updated... can't stitch my 6/8K videos :(

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  7 лет назад +1

    Hey you mentioned that you ordered an external battery but never received it. Have you come up with any way to power this thing externally? We'd love to be able to run ours off of a v-mount battery, but haven't found a working solution yet.

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  6 лет назад

      Yes, any v-mount will work with 14.4V. Just get the D-tap to power cable you are all set. I run on V-mount battery for Livestream all the time. If you can get a regularor to convert 14.4 to 12V that will be safer.

    How do you play 8K footage from it? FAQ says it is only possible with GoPro VR player both on Win&Mac, but sadly max 4K can be played on HTC Vive and Oculus Rift? Is it correct info?

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  7 лет назад

      Yes. Rift and Vive display max out on 4K. But still, 8K production scale down the 4K output still make the overall quality look better just 4K camera (that is why they are so expensive). But very soon, HMD will support high resolution - as some independent HMD developers in China already launched 8K HMD - it is matter of time to come Oculus and / or HTC - also the Google one that collab with HTC. So it is just matter of time. 8K is the trend and it is invest in the future :)

    Hi Hugh! Is it possible to take HDR images in 8k and stitch in the post? Also is it possible to have the different exposure shots of the HDR bracketing separately and merge them in lightroom? Thanks

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  7 лет назад +1

      The HDR images in 8K are stitched in the post. Watch this video and download the HDR images from my Google Drive and test it yourself: ruclips.net/video/oIT3peuywXY/видео.html
      It is shot that way with different exposure. And you can merge them in Lightroom and manually stitch them in Auto Giga if you want more control.

    Hi Hugh quick question, does the Camera have 2 SD cards ? why ? how are they used ? will be better to use the SD vs a SDD Hard Drive ? thx

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  6 лет назад +1

      No. Only 1 SD card slot. But I highly recommend to use SSD unless you are doing drone shots. I use SSD 99% of the time just FYI. But again, I shoot 3D Stereo...

    Thanks for the great video! With regards to the fan noise being picked up by its own mic. What about live streaming - is there an audio jack to use an external mic to cancel out the noise? Thanks!

  • @90210au
    @90210au 6 лет назад

    This camera is amazing but what they don.t tell you is that there isn.t anyway to playback the 8k footage without using an internet streaming service like youtube or visbit both require massive data upload, visbit is a paid service, and youtbue requires massively fast internet connection for 8k). Its like cannon selling 2 video cameras one a 4k and another an 8k. But then saying u can.t actually view the 8k footage taken, its only for recording! (Or u can decrease the resolution, in which case why pay more for high resolution camera)

    Excellent review. Several days of shooting, wow. Thanks for putting all this work!
    A question about performance, you mentioned the turn on time as a problem that can slow you down. What about the in camera stitching? How long does it take for the camera to be ready between shots?

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  7 лет назад

      RTS - Realtime stitching is only available for 4K or below output format. RTS for photo usually takes 20 - 30 seconds. RTS for video usually takes 1 - 2 minutes depending on the length of the video. But since I do not use in camera stitching RTS, it is very fast for me after the camera turns on. I can do way better stitching job in the post with the free insta360 stitcher.

    So this weekend I shot some at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show. The jpegs stitched live internally are PERFECT! I took some in raw and dropping them in mystika vr and the stitching is horrible!!!!
    There is a ton of ghosting for one. When I use the auto tools they improve the ghosting maybe once or twice, then they actually make it worse. And forget clicking “optical flow”. OF is essentially destroying the stitch lines, cant even use it.
    The first few times Ive used this it seemed great mostly on its own, now seemingly after the insta360 pro update Im sitting here manually adding 20 edge points.
    Ive followed your tutorial 3-4 more times literally step by step and its just doing a horrible job of stitching. Any ideas?!?!?!

    Thanks for your tip on the firmware update procedure. That was very helpful.
    Currently I'm looking to hook up the camera through Wirecast and am having some difficulty.
    Do you have any suggestions as to the best way to have the camera connected directly to the computer?
    It may be that Wirecast itself is having difficulty recognizing the camera. What software are you using to live stream with the 360 pro?

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  7 лет назад

      Use their native software on the website.

    • @twelvewingproductions7508
      @twelvewingproductions7508 7 лет назад +1

      That works great for video but the problem is that the 360 pro's audio interface is quite poor and has a buzz that basically makes it unusable.
      There doesn't seem to be a way to pull source audio from a computer microphone live.
      In Wirecast my audio sources show up but not the camera. Have you tried to use the included usb ethernet adapter?

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  7 лет назад

      I need the camera mostly for normal filming and RAW timelapse shooting

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  7 лет назад

      Unfortunately to tell you, your card is not fast enough for normal filming or RAW. You saw my link here: bhpho.to/2xt084w - I use Lexar 2000X U3 V30 - V30 U3 is the minimal requirement from Insta360 official website. But even that, I will go for the fastest card - which is the 2000X I recommended here. But even 2000X, 3D Stereo and slow motion will still crash from time to time for more than 2 minutes of filming. Timelapse will be good for the 2000x Lexar, video for more then 2 minutes (3D Stereo), you will need a T5 SSD - also what they recommended on the website and manual.

    Great review. I just bought me the Insta360 Pro a few days ago and would like to know how to do 3D 180 degree videos. Where or how to place the actors to avoid ghosting or any other visual errors. Thank you in advance.

      For 3D - watch my Mistika VR 3D tutorial - I mentioned shooting as well. But in general, put them in between lens and not too close to the camera.

    Eeep, stitching trouble. Thanks for making this video.

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  7 лет назад +1

      The stitching is actually pretty good compared to other cameras like Gear 360 or KM360. My example, I made the classic mistake of standing way too close to the camera and right between stitch line. You just don't do that on any camera. Optical Flow stitching is pretty faultless - check my 8K 360 test footage: ruclips.net/video/TYwwKzP8ftg/видео.html here and see when I walk around in a circle. If you are not way too close to the camera and you just pass it, the stitch line is hardly viewable.

      The GoPro Fusion (360, made with 2 lenses) doesn't have any stitching problems, even with actors on the stitch line.

    This camera isn't a consumer camera, have you seen pro gear booting up like ARRI Alexa or Sony F55? Also no such a thing as run and gun 360 pro videographer. This camera looks amazing when properly used.

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  7 лет назад

      Thank you for the feedback. I won't consider this camera is professional level like ARRI Alexa or RED Epic-W based on the price point and the usage. I will consider GoPro Odyssey / Halo / Z Cam V1Pro as pro gears as it is above 20K+. The advantage of this camera is the ease to use - and quickly capture the moment when you travel - or do docs style stuffs. Run and Gun is important for wedding videographer and event videographer as the event is not waiting for you to turn the camera on and set it correctly. I find that time to time I need to NOT balance, turn the camera on asap and start rolling. I will roto myself out in post with Mocha VR and straight the horizeon with mettle skybox. I have been hired in many sport event or concert - that require 2D and 3D capture at the same time with not enough budget to hire a 2nd AC. Ease to use like a GH5 is very important. And you are absolutely right - this camera looks amazing when properly used. See my reel here: ruclips.net/video/altHYAq90cM/видео.html

      Mic from 360Rumors.com already answers all your questions. Sorry guys I was on a flight to Sydney and going to test the camera for some real "pretty" outdoor shoot. So my response will be slow. But I actually have the pre-production model of the Guru 360 Air and I can do a review video for that. It will release very soon and the pre-production model is pretty amazing. I will pin Guru360 to answer your question here.

    Wow, the stitching is bad, especially on the show floor on the far walls, huge artifacts keep flickering :( It looks much better when the camera is stationary.
    I have a request since a client came to us with this question - could you place the Insta360 inside a car, where your head should be and shoot that - let's call it a VR demo of the car's inside, to get the feeling of what it would feel like to sit inside it. I know it's a perfect nono for VR 360 as the entire scene will be much closer to the camera than allowed, but it seems to me that the pixel flow stitching could actually cope with that. Could you please shoot a test like that?

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  7 лет назад

      I don't see why not. As long as the subject is not moving and the camera is not moving - the optical flow stitching get it pretty accurate - since the car interior is not moving and the camera will be on a solid tripod. The show floor footage is a totally different story - it is a test for Gyro Stabilization - a new feature that both OZO or Omni do NOT have. But is it perfect? Far from it. Since the camera is so heavy, I can not keep my hand still. So each time I move my hand, it will mess with both image stabilization and optical flow stitching - the earthquake effect you see on the test footage (it get worse in stitched 8K final result). But this is a SOFTWARE problem, nothing to do with the camera. And the team from Insta360 common specifically after they watch my review and will do their best to adjust that issue with a new software release. (I wish I can screen grab that common here...) So I won't too worry about it. But be 100% honest, use a gimbal to do hardware stabilization - I just don't trust software - too much calculation and even Mocha VR with a powerful GPU still mess up time to time.

    • @kaczorefx
      @kaczorefx 7 лет назад +1

      I'm talking about static camera from the inside of a car of course :) I wanted you to check this as we're talking about objects really close to the camera, and Insta360 is quite big, so the parallax might be a big problem in this scenario. Also could you measure the distance between two neighboring lenses? From your video it seems it's quite wider than human eyes (65mm). You're right, I have never seen software stabilization that would be good enough ;)

    • @panoramaboutique4920
      @panoramaboutique4920 7 лет назад +1

      Yeah I would also like to know what is the minimum distance between subject and lens before parallax becomes a problem with this camera. With the car obviously those distances are quite small. Are you planning to make a video? I ask because If you want a photograph you would have no parallax problem using a traditional pano head with a conventional camera.

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  7 лет назад

      Let me run some more test and then response. The parallax issue did not happen for the stationary subject. So even subjects are closed, it won't be an issue. But let me do exactly what you ask and report back.

    I got mine yesterday, and I was so disapointed by the fan noise. It makes it almost unusable for my projects.

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  7 лет назад

      Roger, did you update to the latest v146 and latest Stitcher? 146 has noise cancellation - check the gear icon (not mentioned on the video as I was on only v145 on the time of recording). Also, the next update will allow you to turn the fan off completely. So don't lost hope yet lol.

    • @Rogair
      @Rogair 7 лет назад +1

      What a relief, that we can turn off the fan :) The stiching software is incredible slow on my top spec late 2013 macbook pro, so I haven't been able to test it. Like one minute takes over an hour to stich. Do you have any computer specs recomendation? Preferably on a laptop.

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  7 лет назад +1

      I am using a top spec late 2013 MacBook when traveling as well. Actually, it is not that bad. Just let it run overnight. But at home, I have a PC with GTX 1080 8G CUBA, Xeon CPU and 128G RAM. But so far, I believe the stitcher work best on Mac than PC. My PC with this top spec is not much faster than my laptop. I will purchase the Macbook Pro touch bar pretty soon and hopefully this will change things.

    I haven't had any luck so far delivering a nice clean image into the Oculus Rift. I've tried just about every trick & setting discussed online and nothing really helps. I'm forced to use 3D photos instead of video for this project because the video is just too grainy. The video and photos coming out of the camera are clear and sharp though. It's a great camera.

    • @hughhou
      @hughhou  6 лет назад

      Could you share more detail how you stitch and compress your footage onto Oculus Rift - I deliver onto Rift as well and it looks okay - especially 3D. So stitch and render will make the video lose quality - so always try no compression render until the end. Like ProRes 444 from stitch, then render to AE with ProRes, render into ProRes before Horizon etc... If you give me more info, I can help you out to pinepoint the problem.

    • @GlidewellVideoDept
      @GlidewellVideoDept 6 лет назад

      Thanks for responding! I stitch the video using the Insta360 Stitcher and create a 6K PNG sequence, then bring the PNG sequence into After Effects for color correction, then export an mp4 file per the Oculus specs.

      The stitching from the Insta360 software is some of the best I've ever seen. Flawless. Can you share with us your workflow regarding preparing footage for the Oculus Rift?

      1st shoot - found insta360pro takes a long time to set up, fairly frequent crashes/freezes and one instance of a freeze where we seem to have lost the shot. Great results from what we shot and amzing stitching but this is not a camera for run and gun!

      The recent firmware does have some problem. But I believe the Insta360 Team pushing a new firmware update will fix the issues. Meanwhile, there are many way to avoid all the weird crashes.
