Isn't this so true though? People love to watch others get criticized but when they get roasted they can't handle it.

I think that's why celebrities are better participants at this. They have pretty thick skin from the years of harsh criticism and rejection in the media and from people in their industry. Average, everyday folks aren't cut out for being roasted, especially by close friends and family. Even if they manage to laugh it off, they will always think about it when they are around those people, and hold it against them (even if they keep it to themselves).

Nah, if you're not full of insecurities and somewhat confident getting roasted can be hilarious and fun as fuck. As long as people aren't genuinely trying to be mean at which point it stops getting fun and ends up a little uncomfortable.

This feels more like a satire than a comedy sketch. Some people just don't understand what roasts are.

Anyone ever see the one where Anne Coulter roasts Davidson on his skin colour and he gets (understandably) super pissed? Definitely looked like a real reaction to a sensitive subject. I think she even brings up his dad, who was killed in 9/11. The definition of going too far!

I agree, it's not the right format for SNL. Butttttttttt, if there were a show with all sketches like this, I would definitely watch it. It's kind of like that Netflix series 'The Characters' which was hit or miss depending on the comedian, but a good format nonetheless.

It seems that Beck's character was just trying to find ways to be reaffirmed by his loved ones (in the form of a "roast"), which is really sad.

Brilliant! It’s the best kind of uncomfortable dark comedy.
Everyone I've ever met who swears up and down that they can "handle a joke" or tells you to "take your best shot" always ends up having zero sense of humor and becomes incredibly heartbroken as soon as you make fun of them.
That's why the safest thing to do is revert back to a 4 year old and make a generic poop or fart joke....because every idiot on earth _LOVES_ fart/poop jokes.

lol I don't mind Pete, and he has gotten so much better lately, taking the show as seriously as he should, but for so long he wouldn't even pretend to care enough to not smile and to actually attempt to stay in character. He just always struck me as that popular kid that ironically volunteers to participate only to mock the entire concept. Like I said, he's gotten better, but god, that was so obnoxious when he would do that.

I never understood why (apart from fame) anyone would want to be roasted, especially by people that know you. I mean..I don't have any friends, but if I had them, I sure as hell wouldn't allow them to roast me.
I see it as a verbal version of how as kids it was common to play fight / roughhouse. No one gets really hurt and it's all in fun. Have you never "played the dozens" or traded "yo' mamma" jokes?

Having fun means doing lovely things together and making fun means to take the piss, as the british say.
And some people have bad experiences in the past when it comes to bullying or have sensitive subjects, like in this sketch, that they think they're comfortable with, but they're not and then you get fights.
