You were close, Ben. By the decals, it's a '72. I've had several 9.8's, wonderful motors. Nice job.
    Can we see Pepper?

I can't believe how clean that sounds!
I've got the same motor. Last service was maybe 2013, changed the impeller. Only run 4-5 times since. It's been stored in a shed over winter in cold Canada for the last 2 years without starting.
I ran it 5 days ago for 10 minutes, but can't get her going again since.
Where do I start!!! Plugs are clean NGK, water was coming out the side tube even I ran it 5 days ago.

Fuel line and bulb. The carb just has a little diaphragm to pull fuel. A shitty fuel line or bulb and you lose all your vacuum

Hi there! I've got a 7.5 similar to this and I can't get it to pump water. I've put a water pump kit in in, replaced the grommet and plastic washer at the base of the powerhead, and I've had the powerhead off and made sure it is clear by running water through it. I also made sure the water pump worked by putting a drill on the LU. Could it have something to do with exhaust pressure? Thanks, Matt

I bought an identical 9.8 to this. Do you know what the best prop would be for a 14ft v bottom with 2 people. Thanks

The 9” 2 blade works good for me with my 14 ft Richline. I can get about 21 mph with just me in the boat and I get about 13 to 16 mph with another person.

Nice motor!! I just had my 1972 mercury 9.8 rebuilt completely, runs great but I cannot get more than 10-11mph out of her. I adjusted the carb so it idles good and runs good. Any advice on why I'm not getting the full speed? Should I trim the motor up more? I've got it on the 2nd hole out......I'm running it on a 12ft v hull aluminium boat so it should fly

The only video that I have on that is the full tune up on a 1955 5.5 Johnson but it is about 98% the same only different is the part number for the power head base gasket.

You ever wonder why its a 9.8 instead of the normal 9.9. My guess is if you were on a lake that banned 9.9hp and above this motor would be the cats pajamas.
