"It's no technical marvel" At the time it was mind blowing. Especially compared to GTA San Andreas. It blew me and everyone else away. It had no competition until GTA 4 but then there was Saints Row 2 right after. No-one had seen anything like Saints Row when it came out. I was obsessed with it as a child. The level of customization was insane, and the story and gameplay fit so well to the gang theme, and still holds up pretty good today. Then the physics. They were absolutely revolutionary. Mind blowing I'd say.
The customization was revolutionary for the time. You calling it "pretty basic" makes me cringe lol. Because it was infinitely more customization than was ever seen before it.
You're right about the physics, that aspect of the game is really great and I guess would slot into the "fun gameplay" aspect. The "technical marvel" bit was mainly looking at the wider generation of games as a whole. If you'd show someone gameplay from the 360/PS3 era of games, you can't compare SR to something that came a little later like RDR, Uncharted 2, LA Noire or Halo 4 that realizes the full potential of that generation. That's kinda what I meant. I will concede that I was probably too harsh on the character creator though. You're right, not much like it out there at the time. I didn't get to experience this game at release, and the reviews that I read didn't really focus on the customization that much. I can only look back at it with the knowledge of games that came after, and that includes Saints Row 2-4, so it was hard for me to say much about it when SR2 that came out two years later ended up being even better.
Most Wu-Tang of any game in the series so it’s objectively the best. I do really love the audio player in this and wish it was in 2, the biggest downgrade between the games imo.
There is a lot you missed because I'm sure you didn't spend a lot of time playing. Like you missed the Cab system in the game. Which tbf is kinda hidden. You have to find and call an ad for a cab company and then the number gets saved in your phone You can call them from pretty much anywhere and you can go to any store.

I actually played 3 and 4 in the past year thanks to gamepass and it was a fun experience. Very different games but both were fun in their own ways.
