Love your Unimog and the custom build. It truly is a credit to you and your ingenuity. A shame there’s a pandemic going on that might limit some of your adventures, but things will get better and the world will open up. Undoubtedly, you have one of the best off-grid mobile homes on the planet - looking forward to see more of your videos. I’m about to begin a similar journey around the world (when times allow), but is a restored 1972 Land Rover Series 3 Carawagon... stay safe 👍
Very inspiring, well done! Hopefully one day we can do a Mercedes Unimog offroad convoy together.. but before that, we need to finish our build ha! Safe travels and all the best :)
Love your videos! You guys are awesome. Hope to meet on the road on the in the future. You will get her done!, always takes a little longer than you plan though :)
That is a really wonderful piece of equipment you have created there! I have been very interested in the Unimogs for years and I am also planning to travel the world and live/work in a camper full-time, so your setup has my utmost attention. I have some questions: 1 - I have already traveled a lot (also in a camper) and I have learned that stealth is really important - in order to be able to sleep parked in a regular neighborhood, parking lot, etc. and in order to prevent being robbed. So, I wouldn't want to draw the attention you are getting. It seems that with your setup you are limited to designated camping sites ($$$), or extreme off-grid situations (far away in the wilderness), but nothing in between that traveling through countries mostly entails (imho). 2 - (related to my previous question) I have always had in mind that I need to be able to access the driving cabin directly from the sleeping area (without having to step outside) so I can immediately drive off in case of threats from the outside. 3 - It looks to me that fuel must be one of your biggest costs when traveling considering the mileage you mentioned in your previous video (part 1). Aerodynamics and weight are important factors in fuel consumption, yet place your bikes on top and the back of your truck (not the trailer) is mostly empty yet heavy. 4 - Those big tires are nice, of course, but are they widely available worldwide? (the guy from The Road Chose Me has very convincing arguments for choosing regular sized tires) You have obviously thought out everything very carefully, so I am really very interested what your thoughts are on those issues. Thank you very much!
I typically agree most of the time with Dan Grec- he is right about tires. These tires are actually stock size and yes are available in most of the world. Unlike Jeep ones they are pretty rugged too so likely to not suffer issues as frequently. Fuel is one of the larger costs, I don't push it and rarely drive to the limits of the vehicle. 12 mpg is acceptable to me- certainly not great but not drastically worse than many other trucks that may be under overloaded conditions. I didn't do too much better in my series Land Rover across africa and that is a little 4 cyl. Agree, it would be nice to access the cab directly from living space. Luckily- and probably more importantly is to always avoid situations that seem like they might be sketchy in the first place. The idea of jumping in the cab and outrunning someone is probably a little too movie script. They will catch you anyway. But seriously, it would be nice but I have never experienced a situation where I needed that yet... Stealth is both good and bad. In America- yes, I wish I could just hide in a parking lot like a sprinter van. In developing countries however, my experience has been that I am going to stick out anyway, therefore, I might as well really stick out and by doing so I create so much attention that the bad guys are not interested. Long ago, because of the big truck- I decided orange, pink or yellow were the only options that obviously did not look military. Hope this answers your questions somewhat, thanks for watching.
Are you telling us that this entire monstrosity is for you alone? It looks awesome and all, and I admire you for building it. However, it seems like utter overkill for even two people. And yes, I am jealous of you on your trip. Good luck.
1979 is the my birthyear, so i am thinking about getting just the same Unimog your Rig ist based on. And you really do give me some ideas on how to get that thing on the road for a trip around europe (in the firist run)... So, haven an abo, I'll stick around from now on, Dude!
Dear Michael. Let me express my honest excitement about the concept and about the job done. I'm sure you're aware that a great number of vehicles of such a kind never see a real journey even if they are fully assembled and ready to hit the road. Indeed, there's a bunch of circumstances which are required to make this dream come true. I congratulate you on this. I'm living it myself and, hopefully, I'll have my own truck finished in just a few months. Perhaps, someone have already asked you this question here but still I wish to know your opinion. One of the things needed for a long journey is to afford it. Surely, I don't expect you to tell me about your personal source of income. But i would appreciate any advice about living your home for months and make a living. Appreciate and see you on the road.
Thank you for the support. It is difficult. In my case, I spend far far less than I did when I was attached to a house and all of the assorted bills that come with that. I still have some income from a company that I started and it is very possible to make $ on RUclips and other virtual things while living on the road. Just set goals and follow them. Good luck, hope to see you on the road too.
When you try to make something perfect 👍 I have one question if I could please - did I get it right it was built mainly for traveling alone? UPD found in FAQ, it's built for two
I did build it for two, the bed folds out so that it will sleep two although I rarely do that as I am by myself right now. Greatly depends on how much gear you carry in the truck and what standard of life you are looking for on the road.
Watched both of the videos. Awesome set up. I have a tacoma 4x4🤣. Everyone missed the best question: How much up-keep is there with all of those systems? Are you one of those people that park the rig and then spend most of your time tinkering w/stuff on it to get it to work?
Honestly I have been on the road full time with it for over 9 months now and have not tinkered too much. Did a few things a few months in that I didn't like but now it has been pretty smooth. Thanks for watching.
absolutely awesome, from a newly started 404 builder ;) My question is, while I'm still digesting the insane anount of thought that went into this... is are you doing this adventure alone? It looks like, especially with the doka cab, you could easily support 2-3 people. I hope you vlog your travels and adventures!
Yes, on the road full time now (waiting for covid to let me across a border) but plan to go around the world. Right now I am alone but hopefully will gain a travel partner. Thanks for watching.
Can you provide a dimensional drawing of the M1101 trailer with your size measurements? Awesome job, I’d like to roughly build my trailer to these dimensions and size configurations. I’m mostly interested in general dimensions; overhang, height, length, box frame size. Thanks!
Basically I created a 6 inch overhang on each side, extended the overhang in the front by 16 inches and added about 18 inches in the back. Ceiling height is 6 foot 3 inches. I also extended the tongue by several feet to accommodate the truck.
This is an insane build! Isn't it a slight overkill for overlanding? Are you planning any expeditions to remote locations? All the best in your endeavours!
The trailer was built on a M1102 US military trailer that was designed for the Humvee- which are quite wide. It does decrease my mobility a bit but has not been a huge problem.
Impressive! Just one question please, what were your reasons to go for a hanger as a living cellule and not to modify and convert the rear of the Unimog? Thanks!
In my case the main reason was the truck is a 4 door and doesnt really give enough space to build the habitat. Also, this way I can leave my "house" behind if I need to explore a more difficult area.
@@drivetheglobe Ok to leave the house behind make sense, anyway I have seen some Doka's with a very liveable compact habitat. What is the wheelbase of your Unimog?
Do you have generater for the batteries to keep them charged and if so is the diesel separated from from the tank you drive with, like when people drive a motherhome the diesel they use to drive the motherhome with is the same diesel they use for the generater?. Hopefully that question made sense.
I have had the truck for 14 years and it has been reliable. I regularly check fluids etc. Dont know how much $ over the years I have spent- was a bit for the turbo upgrade and alot for the change of gearing.
Hey man I just watched part 1 and as such i am also watching this part. I have a question. Like something I've always thought about is recykling used grey water by manner of distillation. Great job man. I have a u1250 here in Dublin. Was thinking of bringing it with me to Boston ma. Is it easy i.e. quick and not too expensive to get parts over there. Also how expensive was yours to ship to the U.S. what year did you ship it and how long did it take. Cheers mate
I shipped it many years ago from Germany. (12 years) Right now with covid and the state of parts and shipping everything is a wild card. I am trying to confirm shipping from South America to Africa and getting no where.
@@alandean9674 Well, I guess I dont notice that nor do most people. Life is too short, Im no professional caravan builder- I'd rather be out on the road exploring and meeting nice people.
@@drivetheglobe well I can appreciate that, it's just with such an expensive rig you'd expect a better finish. I would get rid of that trailer all together and redo the Unimog. Any way good luck I wish I could afford one.
All of that power and redundancy in your power system and very little Comforts of home... no kitchen, no real lounging area, a toilet system that really doesn't allow you to be off grid for very long... it's just confusing how there is so much technology and input of resources into creating this rig... and the result is so little like actual functional home-space. And what's the point of all those colorful cans for decoration in the bathroom and in the cab part???
So after living in this set up for a year most of what you say was not really an issue. I live to be outside, so the cooking and lounging most often takes place there. Not sure what toilet system would really last longer. There are options- black tanks that need to be dumped, composting and burning toilets that are cool but if you have actually used them come with a whole host of other issues and power problems. And the cans- they simply were decoration to remind me of my ex home area a little. Having said all of that, I have moved into another vehicle now- which does have a kitchen and more room. Still spend most of my time outdoors though.
@@drivetheglobe sure I appreciate that you spend most of your time outside, understandably! and thanks for explaining about the many colorful cans ;) I don't know where in the world you are right now and if you're doing mostly off-roading or highway driving but it seems like a good composting setup would have the most longevity... It is really impressive and cool that you built a lot of your rig and obviously are really into the upgrades and the vehicle specifications and Power Systems specifications.... it just be cool to have more information about how the way that you did your rig, how that meets your needs for how you live your life and what you do... it'll be interesting to see your future videos on your world travels!😊🤙

I shipped it many years ago from Germany. (12 years) Right now with covid and the state of parts and shipping everything is a wild card. I am trying to confirm shipping from South America to Africa and getting no where.
@@drivetheglobe what did it cost 12 years ago and how long did it take
Unimogs are very rare there right. I recon a good mog would sell for good money there. What do you think
did you use a level or a set square on any of it?
Yep, sure did.
@@drivetheglobe then why are all the fittings and fixtures uneven and wonky, and an overall poor finish on everything in the caravan?
@@alandean9674 Well, I guess I dont notice that nor do most people. Life is too short, Im no professional caravan builder- I'd rather be out on the road exploring and meeting nice people.
@@drivetheglobe well I can appreciate that, it's just with such an expensive rig you'd expect a better finish. I would get rid of that trailer all together and redo the Unimog. Any way good luck I wish I could afford one.
Wait where's the bed have I missed something?
Edit: lol nvm
Ha ha, it is there!!
Exagero!
Thanks for watching.
