2015 Medium SUV Comparison Review : Tucson, RAV4, CX-5, Forester

  • The just-released Hyundai Tucson is gunning to shoot Mazda’s CX-5 off its perch as the top-selling mid-sized SUV range in Australia. And if first impressions are anything to go by, the South Korean threat to Japanese domination looks very real indeed.
    The now-defunct Hyundai ix35 that the revived Tucson nameplate replaces was a long-term top-seller, but a lukewarm performer in CarAdvice testing: an eight out of ten at best, a terrible five and a half at worst. But Australia’s love of the ix35, propelled largely by styling and value, made it the market’s second-best seller (though it was always anachronistically classified as a Small, rather than Medium, SUV).
    Keeping this pair honest in the value stakes is the recently updated Subaru Forester, though in long-awaited and newly introduced diesel automatic form in high-spec 2.0 D-S trim, landing at a red-hot $41,490 before on-roads and options. Blind Freddy could see the generation gap between Fuji’s family hauler and, well, any of its rivals, though the Forester serves to make the Tucson work hard for its $4000 premium. In a recent CarAdvice two-car test, this very example of the 2.0 D-S scored a decent seven-and-half-from-ten victory over the Mitsubishi Outlander (check out the review here).
    Toyota wants a handsome penny ($48,490 plus on-roads) for its RAV4 Cruiser AWD diesel, the big boy in a range that’s scored a seven at its fourth-gen 2013 launch and has failed to rise above a six since in various guises. Mostly from lacking solid value for money. But Aussies love them, and at last count year-to-date the RAV4 has robbed the ix35 of its second-best-selling mantle. It’ll be interesting to see, then, how Tucson measures up on merit in the face of such a bulletproof brand.

    I've had my CX-5 for almost a year now (2.5L Automatic) and I'm still loving it! Awesome car, very comfortable to ride in, large amount of space at the back, decent power for a SUV at this price range, good fuel economy (I've averaged about 9.2L/100km) and above all else: it's handling. Just really effortless and precise. Does not feel like you are driving a SUV at all.

    Great review guys, you helped me decide to test drive Tucson and that made me question my previous decision to go with "mx-5" ^^. Tucson is by far the pretties vehicle there. Its best buy (at least over here in Europe) considering what you get for your money. Decisions, decisions...
    Anyway, on a completely side note... You guys both have Serbian (or other ex-yu) last names. I have been watching your videos and this is the first time that I've noticed it.

    Long term, Forester for me.. Hands Down. Proven. Purposeful and no nonsense. The Hyundai is not likely to hold up to 200k + like the Forester. Outward vision is excellent Price reasonable. The best AWD Hands Down. Excellent fit/finish. Best All Arounder. You can opt for trims as affordable or as fancy as you like, and all the trims are extremely well equipped.

      +djkenny You have it backwards. Hyundai Tuscon won the 2014 JD Powers 3 year dependability rating for the small SUV category. Subaru's are typically slightly below average in reliability. Also JD Powers rates the old Tuscon (not the new 2016 model) very highly.

      I would love to see more long term reliability data. Our Forester was 12 years old when we sold it 2 weeks ago. It had 140k miles, and only thing it ever needed beyond routine maintenance was fog lamp bulbs and a power window motor. Don't get me wrong, I am sure Hyundai makes a very reliable product. Most cars nowadays are very reliable, few are not. But cars with less than 50k, 3 years later.. I just do not consider that data useful at all. ALL cars should be super reliable in that brief low mileage ownership.

    Forester is probably the only capable off roader, and their owners of different generations really love it for its lasting appeal, practically and as a reliable workhorse. Just like the fact that Subaru engineers stick to their principles and did not follow the industrial fashion trend and still put SUV's functionality ahead of looking fasionable. The Forester has good visibility all around with large windows but that design makes it look less fashionable... but still looks tough, handsome and rugged. In Subaru and Toyota, engineering probably comes before fashion design, it's probably the reverse for the others. I had owned Kia/Hyundai that looks beautiful at skin level ....but on the engineering and reliability aspect, particularly engine and gearbox, it's still behind the bullet proof Subaru and Toyota.

    Tucson has cheap materials, bad transmission and steering wheel and also much more wind noise. How does it come first? Just looks and cargo space?

    • @Demon_Pig
      @Demon_Pig 7 лет назад +2

      Yeah, compared to Mazda it does look much cheaper inside. Both cloth and leather seats are inferior materials compared to the Japanese competitor. It does look a bit better (newer?) on the outside in my opinion but it has way more of a blind spot and those cheesy alerts don't work for me.
      Tucson is a bit faster off the line however. It's a tough pick. I'm leaning towards Mazda at this point, mainly because of the interior refinement, handling and also worried about long term turbo reliability with Hyundai (debating either 1.6t Tucson or 2.5 CX-5). No diesel in Canada.
      I would love to get a Subaru Outback instead of any of these cars but Outbacks are quite pricy with the H6 and the H4 is weak (talking about gas not diesel).

    In the USA the Honda HR-V is the CHEAPEST model $19,000 for Manual, $19,900 USD for Automatic. I was very surprised because in the 1990's Honda said "We will start making our vehicles more affordable" and since then they have always been a lot HIGHER then other brands. At least now maybe we can get one vehicle for a reasonable price that is a CUV instead of a sedan for the same price.

Mazdas superior fuel economy is negated by its smaller boot and inferior warranty. I agree with the panels winner . . the Tuscon. Would like to have seen Tiguan included in comparison.

      +djkenny I agree... I find it so annoying. I was at the Toyota dealer wondering why the RAV4 hybrid has a power lift gate and no power driver's seat, even at $31,000.

      tastyorange 31K! Wow. We just bought a new mid level (loaded, really) Subaru Forester Premium for 25k. About 3k below MSRP, a bit below invoice. I would not pay 31 grand of ra car in this class. The model above the one we bought had leather, navigation and the silly electronic trunk.. not a heck of a lot more, but was like over 2 grand more. No thanks. I can use a Garmin.

      Goran Ana The Qashqai doesn't compete with these. It competes with smaller SUV's like a Mazda CX-3, Holden Trax, Peugeot 2008, Honda HR-V, Nissan's own Juke, and so on. The Nissan X-Trail is the model that competes with the 4 in this video.

    After some research, it seems not all AWDs are created equal. Most CUVs have FRONT BIASED AWD, which is to save fuel in everyday driving, but when conditions gets very ugly or having to climb 30+ degrees slopes ( ruclips.net/video/0_MXK2nzt2Y/видео.html ), they are simply outmatched, and you start to see and appreciate superior systems and the technology behind it.
    Granted, few people will take their vehicles to these extremes, but as a consumer I would feel assured that a vehicle can tackle thru these mild to medium obstacles. I'm not a Subaru owner, but I'm impressed with their SYMMETRICAL AWD system, which is similar in perfomance to Audi's Quattro. Their Boxer engines are similar in configuration to Porsche's, allowing for a lower engine mount in the chassis, thus achieving a lower center of gravity which translates into better stability when pushed to its limits vs. its competition.
    They must have done something right, for the Forester to have won: a) 2014's Motor Trend's best SUV of the year. b) 2014 Consumer Report's best small SUV of the year.
    Subaru used to build ugly cars, I didn't consider them at all, they were not even on my test drive list. Since Toyota bought a stake in the company, I guess the Capital Infusion must have helped them design better looking cars. After Toyota killed its V6 in their CUV segment, there were hardly any sporty/fun/reliable CUVs on the market. Now I would consider a Forester XT, when the time comes to replace my Toyota RAV 4 V6 AWD. (265 HP)

      Have you asked a Korean to pronounce Hyundai?

    • @dhL17
      @dhL17 6 лет назад +1

      You're not pronouncing Hyundai right either. The tagline "Hun-day, like Sunday" was used in America (and maybe other countries) to standardize the pronunciation for Americans, but still not right; it's a mix of both the Australian and your way. Try pronouncing Cool Whip with the H, then try pronouncing Hyun with the Y, but with the accent on the H. The second part "dai" is supposed to be pronounced "deh", not "day" or even "die". So "Hyun-Deh", while pronouncing the Y and with a hard accent on the H.
      The Australian and Jeremy Clarkson way at least pronounces the Y in Hyun, which for some reason, American just chose to drop.
