Best Ambient Synth Shootout

- Well, this time it's a bit outside the competition;-) Because I used a Bastl Instruments MicroGranny 2 (a 8-bit, mono sampler with some of my own sampled sounds) and a massive assistance of some FX pedals to generate a low-fi, glitchy, outer-space, dark ambient song.
I used it together with the following FX pedals:
TC Electronic T2, Digitech Obscura, Alesis Philtre, Alesis Ampliton and for one audio track in addition a Boss SL-20 Slicer.
The signal goes via a small Behringer mixer straight into the pc.
To create the complete song I recorded overall 5 stereo audio tracks, each mainly played live as it can be seen in the video. The final song was then mastered with just a bit EQ and compression on some tracks.
BTW, don't get irritated by the video. It was taken during one of the 5 audio recordings, so it's a bit difficult to follow. And I had some difficulties to keep it really in sync with the audio. Sorry for that :-(
Well, I decided to go back to the basics, but at the same time make something useful for the synth community and do a kind of competition (I like competitions;-). What's my best synth for ambient music, but this one is out of competition :-)
If you're interested in my MicroGranny sample set, let me know and I can send it :-)

Enjoy :-)
I love everything Bastl makes, but especially the Microgranny!
Extraordinary performance. I tire of percussion. This was the kind of composition I got into Synths for. I am just getting to know my MG. This was quite helpful.
Many thanks for your comment :-)
This sounds great! I really enjoy doing similar. The T2 is a great pedal. Will check out your others, haven't heard of them before. I like to pair mine with the red panda particle for similar jams.
Thank you for your feedback :-) Yes, the T2 is great! I also have the red panda particle, which is a great, unique delay pedal. For this song I used a DigiTech Obscura delay pedal, which is really good for bread'n'butter and low-fi stuff.
nice soundscape! Dark and cavernous.
It's amazing what you can pull off with such a small box with so many capabilities. I am picking up a microgranny 2.5 on Thursday, I'm really excited to add it to my setup, as I delve further into the land of sampling.
subbed and looking forward to more. I hope you make it to 1k!
Feel free to check out my drones and jams if you're looking for something new.
If you're on facebook, look up the group: "Droner Jams!" I'm trying to get a forum going of people to share their drones or just share other drones or drone news they've recently discovered.
have a good one!
Many thanks for your nice comment :-) I'll definately will have a look to your site!
Christian's Sonic Spaces much appreciated. Just about to go out to jam in the park now.
nice work
Many thanks :-)
Nice soundscape! :)
Many thanks :-)
Nice....thx for uploading 🎼
Many thanks :-)
Excellent! I think i have to get a Micro Granny at some point.
Many thanks :-) The MicroGranny is a really nice, glitchy sounding sampler. Check out also my other MicroGranny videos ;-)
Well done!
Many thanks :-)
This is fuckin great, almost like Lustmord vibe! What are these fx pedals? I just bought Microgranny and I think about matching it with Poly Effects Beebo
Wow this is great! Love the space vibe to it. I just recently picked up the micro granny too. I noticed you had a aux cable plugged in the input. Did you previously record those synth sounds? The way I see it is you recorded them, then you used the output to adjust the Effects on the delay pedal. Is that right?
Thank you for your comment. No, I didn't use the input of the MicroGranny. Yes, most of the sounds in my soundset I sampled myself with my other synths. The four effects are in series behind the MicroGranny and then straight into the mixer.
that was so good!
Thank you :-) And a Happy New Year to you.
Hi Christian, 5 years later this is still on of my MG favorite video on YT. Btw, is your sample set still available? Thanks!
Many thanks for your nice comment :-)
Yes, the sample set is still available:
shoab.de/files/MG2-8-Bit-Industrial-Sample-Bank-v01.zip
However, you have to copy manually this link as text , because YT adds a different Hyperlink that don't forward to the sample set file.
@@christianssonicspaces494 This is SO appreciated, thanks SO much, I'm gonna upload the set ASAP. Keep up the great work, thanks again. :)
Thumbs up!
Many thanks :-)
Very nice! I know that are two different beast but what do you prefer between microgranny and roland 404 sx?
I've never had the 404, so I can't give any preference. I think the 404 is much more versatile and the MG more lo-fi, limited but unique.
@@christianssonicspaces494 thanks!
Great stuff! And sign me up for the MG samples!
Many thanks :-) PM me if you want my MG sample set ;-)
This is great, i like it very much, one is now underway, So i really need those samples :-) will have a concert 11 march can you send me a downloadlink, Much aprecciated..
I'm glad that you like it :-) Here's the download link of my Industrial/Noise sample bank:
shoab.de/files/MG2-8-Bit-Industrial-Sample-Bank-v01.zip
Choose the wav-files you want to use and copy them to the root of a microSD card. For your information, for the song I make heavy use of the Alesis Philtre and Ampliton. If you need more than one voice per time you might need a looper, as I overdubbed with a pc.
Have fun!
