Excellent video! The graphical description with the Borderlands is a MUST for everyone getting into granular. I owned the Fabrikat and while it is indeed excellent, the lack of presets is a serious dealbreaker. The Particle seems to be the better option as it has built in presets, but I think the Fabrikat sounds more "organic" and less harsh. I currently own the Microcosm. It is unreal, but I kinda miss the fine tuning that the Particle or Fabrikat provide. So here's my take: if you want instant ambient granular goodness (and reverb and modulation and a freaking looper!), the Microcosm is hard to beat. But if you want finer control over the sounds (and a web editor), go for the Particle. I'm planning on getting a Particle as its small size is ideal for a smaller board (the Microcosm is massive by comparison).
Having watched more demos than is good for my health, there does seem to be a Microcosm signature sound. Seems like Red Panda products can go wherever you want
Very interesting breakdown of granular delays and modulation and comparison of different effects. We are truly in the golden age of effects. I’ve had the Microcosm for about six months and am still discovering its wonders.
Thanks for this video. You put a lot of work into it. It's definitely made me lean into getting the Particle V2. And I'll wait for the next Fabrikat to come out.
What an awesome video! Just reaffirms how much I hate granular delays, but adore their usefulness. I need to just sit down and learn, because your demonstrations are wonderful and lush.
Oh my god. I have been watching previous granular delay videos of yours TODAY and saw you were working on a video focusing on granular delays (I’ve been considering a Particle V2, this time around it’s probably going to happen-that’s the reason for recent, repeat viewings). WOW! You don’t cease to amaze. 😄
Planning on plugging Borderlands into BLEASS Granulizer into Portal plug-in on macOS into ZOIA into Particle V2 into Kaoss Pad Granular into H9 running Crystals algorithm into Microcosm into… 😉
Thanks for an amazing overview. Of these demo'd pedals I have Fabrikat & Microcosm and I'm trying hard to tell myself I absolutely don't need the other pedals (good luck with that, right?).
The microcosm seems to take everything to another level. I now see why they are selling used for more than new ones. Looks like it blows everything else out the water
lol sorry i disagree I own the microcosm and the Zoia. The zoia has thousands of patches by users to download. A module can be made of Anything you can think of. After using the microcosm for a while now it dose ambience really well but the looper is lacking not to mention the popping noises many users have experienced. Support are not bothered in the slightest with replies like " it shouldn't be doing that", no $hit sherlock smh. The Zoia does it all if you take the time to learn it.
Thanks! The new Glitch Delay is more similar to the Mode 1 of Count to 5 I think. It got even better with the new update. They did a really good job with that effect, imo.
Great video!! Very educational for me. I have Empress Zoia and love the granular module... FABRIK look very nice to me... like all the Pladask elektrisk pedal.
Thanks for the video! Still pondering on which one to buy though :( Can't decide between beebo and microcosm. Zoia seems to complex with limited controls (one knob)
About the Zoia, you are correct that it is complex. However, it’s not limited per we because of the one knob. The power is in its programming. You can assign any button or stomp switch to any granular module parameter. You can shape it based on your input device’s signal even. Or reverse the inputs with an invert module. You can make granular delay the main effect, or use the granular module to make an effect sound granular. The one knob is just part of the way to menu dive. But it’s not a tweaking while playing input typically. You can also use external devices like midi controllers and other external cc devices to trigger or change parameters of the granular module.
Granular delays might sound similar to tremolo especially when there is no randomness or feedback involved since in that case it’s just slices of sound fading in and out.
@@DoNoise I remember seeing Knobs use it in his Avalanche Run video in 2016 and that was my first foray into iOS music making, and I’ve stayed ever since
I have both and like them both. V1 is lofi, gritty. Has its own sound and is direct. No hidden features, no midi, no presets. V2 is clean, more capable. Can also be more confusing when one uses it "modeless".
Not at the moment. I’ll have to see if I still have them saved on my unit. You can check out my Beebo video to see how I made the modulated granular delay. It should be easy to replicate it.
Is there anything like borderlands available for Mac? It seems like what you did is pretty simple but all the software granular synths I’ve found seem so complicated compared to this lol
sadly most android audio stuff is a non-starter - between hardware variation and audio latency on so much of said hardware, it winds up not being worth it for developers to put the focus on it since it would require so much of said focus.

This video shows how you understand and use the power of image. You showed it and I understand it. love it.

I got the Baklengs. Never been happier. :)
Excellent! Wonderfully detailed explanation. Also very enjoyable to listen to! Liked & shared!
Thank you, and thanks for sharing!
This is very helpful lesson. Thanks for your detailed explanation!
Your videos are so pleasantly worth rewatching and hearing again.
Thanks so much!
I just bought the Zioa :) wonderful pedal and I think if there was a zioa 2 in the future, it will blow everyone’s minds more :)
Beebo is just mindblowing…

Fabrikat into Particle has been a favorite combo of mine for a while. You might be on to something there :)
awesome video! 👍 I've got a beebo and microcosm. don't want to miss neither of them. possabilties for ages
Great explanation of granular delay.... I also really like the melodies you feed into the pedals. Very nice!
Outstanding video, dude. 👏👏👏👏
Very nicely done and super easy to follow - even *I* understood what you were talking about!
Thanks so much!
Awesome video! I believe the Charlie Foxtrot by malekko may have been the first in a pedal

Awesome video ! They just added a very panda like algo to the line 6 helix stuff as well. I will have to do a video about that soon.
Thanks!

Such a fantastic demo
i've almost pulled the trigger on t he red panda particle so many times...
Do it. It will make you happy.
me too. you're not helping lol
I bought a second one when the first one fried.

Can granular be a kind of tremolo? Some of the sounds of these pedals, remind me of tremolos. Very detailed video and explanation, I like the Pladask.
Granular delays might sound similar to tremolo especially when there is no randomness or feedback involved since in that case it’s just slices of sound fading in and out.
Great video!
This made me instantly buy borderlands
It’s an amazing app. You won’t regret it.

Check out Spacecraft Granular too apps.apple.com/gb/app/spacecraft-granular-synth/id1391256308
Already have it :) I primarily use my iPad as a music making tool and I love it.
@@tompoynton I’ll definitely check it out. Thanks
10/10 great video!
Right on time when i’m about to purchase the particle v1. Anyway, do you like the particle v1 or v2 better?
I haven’t tried the v1 but based on the features and improvements I have no doubt v2 is better.
I have both and like them both. V1 is lofi, gritty. Has its own sound and is direct. No hidden features, no midi, no presets. V2 is clean, more capable. Can also be more confusing when one uses it "modeless".
Got any of those poly presets available for download? Having a super hard time getting used to my Beebo but those sounded really good.
Not at the moment. I’ll have to see if I still have them saved on my unit.
You can check out my Beebo video to see how I made the modulated granular delay. It should be easy to replicate it.
Anyone know which one of these has True ByPass? Thanks
Is there anything like borderlands available for Mac? It seems like what you did is pretty simple but all the software granular synths I’ve found seem so complicated compared to this lol
Thank you for that! Count to five by Montreal Assembly is similar?
Count to 5 is more like a regular sampler than a granular sampler, in my opinion. Maybe Mode 2 can work like a granular sampler/delay.
@@DoNoise , thank you! I bought it after all. It is really inspiring. Carry on!
@@dtasoudis I’d definitely get it if I didn’t have one. Amazing pedal.
Great video. Why no Mood?
Thanks!
I didn’t feel like the Mood really fit here. Its loop side works more like a freeze rather than delay.
Great lesson, should have watched it much earlier. Thx
Are there VST that are capable doing this?
The Mangle by Sound Guru
Is there anything like Borderlands that's available for Android?
Not that I know of
sadly most android audio stuff is a non-starter - between hardware variation and audio latency on so much of said hardware, it winds up not being worth it for developers to put the focus on it since it would require so much of said focus.
It’s kinda unfair how good the microcosm is. Hahaha
Now plug them all in at once
Now I wish I did that :)
I really like using the Fabrikat and Particle together but haven’t tried stacking more than 2 yet.
Beebo and Hologram are the most ambient and evocative pedals.
