  • After taking some time off from hunting Toonies, can I get through a full box without finding counterfeits? Um... not so much! Despite the record haul of fakes, we're also hoping this box will provide some other gems: key dates, proofs, colour, NIFC, etc.
Here's the link to a previous toonie hunt where I show you what to look for to spot fakes: • Coin Roll Hunting $100...

Unfortunately counterfeiting toonies is profitable at $2 a coin, minus the initial cost of a press and materials. This is something governments don't really address when they try to replace higher denomination bills with coins. Anti-counterfeit measures only work if people are going to take the time to examine the coins at the banks and remove them from circulation. Again very informative James!

Been hunting toonies for 6 months now. Even without the counterfeit thing it is a frustrating endeavour. Toonies being a somewhat high denomination, you never get much bang for your buck(s). And roll hunting is all about bettering your odds through high numbers. As for the possibility of getting loads of fakes, every time I acquire a lot of rolls, it's like I'm beamed back to that nineties feeling when about to have unprotected sex during AIDS deadliest years. Exciting AND terrifying at the same time.

There is a particular mule error where the proof die was used in a small number of these toonies. The proof toonies did not have a raised circle between the inner and outer rings, while the circulation one did. The mule error caused a small number of circulation toonies without that raised circle. So, look through the ones you have. If you find one without the rim, you've got your valuable toonie. If not, spend them!!
