  • They call it the "camel-toe toonie", and you will understand why as soon as you look at the front right paw of the polar bear on it. Since they were first discovered in circulation in 2020, estimates range from at least tens of thousands to likely millions of them reaching circulation.
But who is behind it? How do you counterfeit toonies at scale and get them into the banking system? And ... why toonies?

Must be an international gang: Probably made in Asia. Could easily sell for $100 - $250 per 1,000 units.

Is that the one where the number 2 is a Z instead? I work retail and have seen many of those, as well as these cheap chinese $20's printed on the wierdest substance paper.
To launder all those toonies, Coinstar vending machines. Seen it done before with fake loonies.
Casinos and charities as well, although think they passed a law minimizing these because of organized crime.

Here's what i don't understand, who repackages these coins? are they sorted then? If they know theses coins are out there and they don't do anything to get them out of the system then they are either complicit in the counterfeiting (passing known fakes) or Legitimising them by letting them continue to circulate. The guy is right, I'm not going to look to closely at my coins. Because if I don't know it's a camel toe I can spend it.
