The only ones who make the big bucks off diamonds are the wholesalers and retailers. Everyone else just gets very little, unless it's a 5 caret or larger. So damn many diamonds out there. Rubies, emeralds are the ones that get you more because they are so much rarer.

  • @gabunnie1

That stone you found was most likely Alexanderite, NOW VERY RARE, (one of June's birthstones-the other is a pearl) not mystic topaz. The pink stone with the small diamonds around it could be a pink diamond or pink topaz or pink sapphire. The redish heart shaped on with tiny fiamonds around it could be a garnet (garnet runs anywhere from green to purple and about every shade in between). If it is set in gold, most likely it is some sort of REAL STONE. Just am FYI. Even white topaz is a precious stone. The rings are beautiful.

    • @Tanzarian7
      @Tanzarian7 Год назад +36

Those were not alexandrite... they were mystic topaz, alexandrite will be brownish purple in one kind of light and then the whole stone will have a color change when brought into natural light. The pink stone is most likely morgnite but could be pink sapphire, it doesn't appear to have the sintalation (sparkle as it moved) like a diamond would have had. I was surprised they didn't diamond it test it just incase since it would have been 50k if it was a pink diamond lol

I was thinking the same thing, Tanzanian. I make jewellery & the big stone was mystic topaz but a smaller, similar stone caught my eye as Alexandrite. No longer being dug up so getting pricier by the day! Alex needs to take them all to a jeweller to be checked & tested. Also, he needs to be told that semi has been dropped (quite a few years ago) as anything dug out of the earth is precious.

I picked my own wedding band up at a pawn shop in 2008 and I paid $150 for it and get compliments on it all the time. A few years ago, I took it to a jeweler to repair a broken prong on the setting and he valued the ring at $2000. It is 14k with a row of diamond flowers set just above the band. I don’t have an engagement ring because I would constantly be snagging it on things. I used to manage a clothing store and even my small ring snagged things, that is how my prong broke. I was lucky my ring was dirty, all the lotion in it held the stone in place.

A real alexandrite changes from an emerald green to a ruby red - I saw one at the Smithsonian. The color change is caused by the light source. Don’t forget they already made $10,000 on the furniture. So they need way more than $10K to break even with costs. I think they’ll likely make a profit. They should get the rings appraised and have a reserve at auction. I loved the way Melissa wasn’t at all interested in switching out her wedding rings. I wasn’t either when my husband wanted to buy me a larger stone. I’m not a fan of gaudy jewelry even if real. I have small hands and I prefer something suited to my hand size.

    Must everything go to auction?
I don't have a real understanding of jewelry value, but
with an honest appraisal you could put a reserve on them and
    see how it goes .
If they don't meet the reserve, then put them up for auction later.
It isn't like big items etc, they take up little space in storage.
You invested too much time and money on this one

Mr. Spector, you must not be familiar with Alexander's auction history...Nearly half a million fans from around the world, from MANY different financial perspectives that compete just to 'get a piece' from Curiousity Inc's 'World of Wonder'- drives the prices INCREDIBLY above and beyond the normal rhelms of the secondary market. I myself have been a jewellery reseller for over 30years - and the prices one has to pay to win one of these jewellery treasures you see in his adventures...wellllll sir, be ASSURED..Alexander & Melissa have NO worries! Even near worthless strings of nonvalue component craft 'jewellery' from Madame Rac's, that one could not sell at a flea market or garage sale for $5, went over $100. I myself paid more for some gold pieces than I will ever admit, just to have lovely treasures from 'the story'. The world's eyes & wallets vying for singular Baubles, makes for an AMAZINGLY, UNARGUABLELY *HUGE* competitive bidding base unlike anywhere- even Christie's.🤗

Yes, Mystic Topaz. You got a great haul in there. Even that emerald and diamond band is a good one. Color matters in emeralds. I love those earrings and matched diamond bands (I think those were guards.) ! Terrific finds!

It also matters if the emeralds are natural or lab created. The color on those are beautiful, if natural, should be pretty valuable, I think.

I am so happy you both are being suprised by this haul of rings. You have got what most of us dreamed of being able to have when we were younger. Love watching your finds. You both make it fun. There was one ring in there that we used to call a smokey topaz gold wrap. 10-14K gold with the stone mounted. They were not cheap by any stretch. I'm talking 70's and 80's.

Oh my...if you think the 1st safe was rather a bust, be glad you didn't pick mine: a card stating I'd be "arrested on sight" (for overdue library books, no less), the first letter my neice ever wrote me (pencil taped to it), first "gift" from my nephew ( a pinecone), brother's wedding invitation, risque photos from my 20's, a poem my youngest brother wrote, etc... The things I find precious aren't worth anything at auction ~ you'd have been soooo disappointed😆😅😂 Happy you & Melissa found more traditional treasures!

My grandfather was what was then called a gold and silver smith. He made all kinds of things. It gave me a love for beautiful stones and silverwork. These rings you found are very pretty. And I bet even the fake ones will sell just fine. There are plenty of people who want a big "looking diamond" on their hand.
But I loved the ring with emerald the best. Gorgeous.

I spotted the peacock right away, I thought it was beautiful too Melissa. It look’s gorgeous up there!
My grandparents were married in 1932, they had wedding rings as did their parents. What my grandma & great grandma didn’t have was a set, they each had one single ring with some type of stones in them. Grandma’s was diamonds. So wedding rings have been around for over 100 years.

For someone who deals in antiques for a living, I know, right? I think what he meant to say was that diamonds weren't always the preferred choice of stone in an engagement ring. In the Victorian era, people used all different types of stones.
