The Secret war in Laos was NOT the Vietnam War Charles. Australia played a much larger part in the Vietnam War than what they did in Laos which was orchestrated by the CIA. Hence the name... America's secret war on Laos.

I don’t think Todd was bad mouthing, just giving some background about Long Tieng in the years before ‘75. One day he may take a road trip into Vietnam.

I was born during the period of the insurgency in Saisamboun formerly Xiengkhouang Province 1978. My family is from this area right off the Nam Ngum river. Truly beautiful but dirt poor with not much opportunities or economic development. This area has been off limits for over 30 years. Would love to come home in the near future.

Please visit Palavac(the town) when you can. Like I've said, it's holds the most beautiful peak in Laos. That little hidden place has about 5 family that has over 100K subs on RUclips. They hardly see any westerner though, it'll be fun to see their reactions...LOL! Safe travel mate!

@@NowinLao It's because he spelt it wrong. I know which town he is refering to, as I sometimes do watch those hmong channels. The town's name in google and bing are lavec / phalavek. Although, it is actually 2-3 villages next to each other now since the population grew. Ban Namkhian / Phalavek, Hom District, Xaysomboun Province. GPS coordinants: 18°40'39.0"N 103°11'29.4"E
@@NowinLao I forgot, Longxane is closeby. It is a journey north-east of Longxane. At Ban Xiang Mi, you go east, instead of Northwest to Long Tieng.

up on one of those mountain is "sky1" the CIA radar station which they used to monitor China and North Vietnam military movement. The "raven" pilot's mission was to protect and conceal the station but the communist eventually figure it was there and started attacking the base. 1:26 Nowadays this region is beautiful but I have a flash back between 1977 & 1979 people lost their lives for a tiny fraction of reasons :( "It was like walking on a mine field everyday" :( Great video though :(
There were thousands of unexploded bombs in the area of Long Tieng. From 1986 to 2000, six different private companies employed hundreds of bomb technicians to clear the area of these unexploded bombs.

I would not call some of that a road. lol Better have good brakes. Funny how you come down off that mountain to a little village and there is a stop sign. Interesting how some have custom tarps to cover their tractors. Another good video, seeing the very rural side.

Time to make serious preparations for your forthcoming career mate - as a military "battlefield" tour guide !! I have no doubt you have done the research on this previously closed off area, so you have a good idea of what you might finally find. Its little wonder why Hmong villages still have distrust of other villages given what happened during that war - its another rarely told horror story really. Well filmed mate, especially the focus on the villagers still living in the aftermath - very impressive - big thumbs up. Im looking forward to a fine meal and lots of beer in the restaurant as soon as Thailand makes its mind up on travel :)

Even harder to find when there is another Xaysomboun way up near the Chinese border that Google keeps taking me to. Found Sana Somboun and went from there.

The bridge is okay, if you're traveling around the mountain villages of south east Asia you'll have to deal with a lot worse than that .

When those hungry Lao communist soldiers or guards see any chubby and light skin Hmong from the U.S they automatic asked for their passports and reach for their wallets. When those Hmong American asked them why they were stopped, the communist Lao soldiers can't even come up with any good reason but just a guilty look in their faces( it's like being stopped by a white police officer while being black) LOL. They will only let you go until they can get a few Dollars from you. If you are Lao,Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean or white European they will not bother you. It's worse at the immigration check points at the border.
@@blasblasblas2094 The Hmong are light skinned because they are originally from north and central China. I’ve seen Han Chinese from Fujian and Guangxi who are considerably darker than Hmong. I was surprised to see so many Hmong children with light brown, almost blonde, hair in Todd’s videos.

@@NowinLao Sorry I pissed you off Mate. What stands out in my mind is the footage of the waterfall beside the highway, I swear I saw it 3 times in various videos. I also don't like seeing vids that were done over a month ago but that's just me and I'm no where==At least you're livin the life
You're a hard man to please Tummy.. the waterfall has appeared in only 2 of my videos. The first video it was the main attraction. The second video it appeared for about 3 seconds as we drove past it leaving the area.
As to videos being months old... Nothing I'm gonna do about that. When I travel, that's my time to rest from editing. What we capture gets edited when we return home.
Pretty sure most people understand that. 😉

Really beautiful place,sorta divided on where I'd want to retire to...Lao or Thailand.
There's a lil problem with your information on the Lao civil war.The CIA didn't start it,it actually started back in the 40's after WW2 to get the French out under the name of Lao Issara (at the time non-communist).They asked for help from the Viet Minh.
During 1950 they switched the name to Pathet Lao under the leadership of Prince Souphanouvong,in 1953 the Pathet Lao led by Viet Minh invaded Laos.In 1954 the North Vietnamese (NV) formed Group 100 and controlled the Pathet Lao from somewhere in Khammouane Province,sources say Ban Maneo but the name probably changed since then but the province does contain the Mu Gia Pass that the NVA funneled their men and supplies into SVN through and is now the Na Phao border checkpoint.
Later around '58 or '59 the NV formed Group 959 to secure the route through Laos to SVN and supplied the Pathet Lao with weapons and training and also lead the majority of battles throughout the war against the the RLA Royal Lao Army and then let the Pathet Lao finish the battle and take claim.
To make it short,there was attempts at peace during the 50's but the NV didn't want that.
The CIA moved into Laos around in the 50's but didn't start training Hmong and Thai troops till '59 under General Vang Pao.
The North Vietnamese communists initiated the war to force communism in Laos and also Cambodia with the Khmer Rouge.It wasn't the CIA,they were there to help the RLA and General Vang Pao along with the Cambodians with the added plus that it may help stem the flow of troops and supplies into SVN.The US couldn't actually get involved with troops as it could in SVN due the signing of the International Agreement on the Neutrality of Laos 23 July 1962,Geneva.
The CIA was there to help the Lao after asking the US/Pentagon and regular troops couldn't,The Lao and Thai soldiers were out in the jungles reporting what they saw and have Air America or the US Air Force bomb the majority of these places and add air support to those troops engaged with the Pathet Lao and NVA.Yeah the US had a large bombing campaign in Laos and Cambodia,the NVA were using about the eastern 1/3 of both countries to seek refuge in and resupply.WHat was dumb was Cambodia and Laos not demanding the US send actual troops in to help push the NVA out,it would gave the NVA huge problems trying to get men and supplies south and more than likely kept the communists out of power in both Laos and Cambodia.
This is just what I can remember from all the material I have read on the Indochinese War,Vietnam War and the wars in Laos and Cambodia for about 40 of my 50 yrs.They're not one sided views from the US,I have 2000? books,reports,memoirs,etc. from all sides,some with very small prints due to them being from still yet or former communist living in those countries or was able to escape (remember the movie "The Killing Fields" and Dith Pran,much along those lines).Some are from Eastern Block countries that helped the NVA,Cuba,China,and some Russian.I have more that are from former NVA that still live in VN or may have later got out then the previous.The majority is personal accounts of US soldiers,many from members of MACV/SOG as the ones from those other countries are seldom found circulating and when they are can be a little pricey but they do tell a story that is pretty much the same.
Yes I do have a decent number of Aussie accounts along with 1 or 2 of ROK.
Wasn't trying to make this so long but to try and accurately explain what went on it doesn't lend it's self to being very short.
Oh one last thing,sorry.
A lot of bombing was on reported communist areas and troops like said,from Thai,Lao and MACV/SOG units.With that said those communists did go into towns and villages and force thousands upon thousands people to work for them,same with the Pathet Lao,many were killed if they wouldn't.Yes there were a lot of poor people caught in-between that died but that sort of thing can't be helped as much as you try in war...any war.At wars end,the now victorious Vietnam,Laos and Cambodia communist regimes ended up killing millions more.Cambodia was the most well known and probably the largest amount but the Vietnamese also killed 100's of thousands if not a couple million through their "reeducation camps" or flat out retaliation to working on the SVN side.There were thousands killed by the VC and NVA a lone just in Hue of '68.These included people that wasn't just helping the US there were teachers,doctors,political,technical workers....anyone they thought a threat to their success and there are well documented papers,books,etc. (not just a US view) on all of it.
An added note,if the lame Dem Harry Truman would have read and replied to Ho Chi Minh's correspondence back at the end of WW2 there wouldn't have been a Indochinese War or a Vietnam War.He wanted Vietnam to be a protectorate of the US like Panama,Guam,Puerto Rico,etc. are/were.

You need to get your facts right, we called it Alternate 20 (LS20A) in 65 we were flying out of Wattay with Chi Coms, Russkies and NVA students Alt20 had nothing to do with bombing, and the war was the worst kept secret in SE Asia. The CIA didn't conduct anything from there except mostly A.I.D flights for Edgar ( Pop ).
Please hang around for the next upload Thomas.. the only "fact" I got wrong was leaving the 'S' out of LS20A. The rest is now common knowledge and the roll the CIA and Long Tieng played in the "Secret War"
Todd, why don't you learn the Hmong language so the next time you travel back to the Hmong village you know how to talk to them better?. 6 months or 1 year to learn, to speak and understand the language.
