  • One of the most frequent questions, "How do I get more air?" and "How do I get more air off my small wake?" In this video I explain how body position and using some key drills can get you into the air higher than before, even when using a small wake. This edit is a follow up to my video titled "How To Get More Pop". If you haven't watched that yet, start there to understand how all of the physics of wakeboarding can feel more like a friend than an enemy. Awesome video! I think this really makes sense. You hear all the videos progressive edge and that you should be cutting the hardest at the wake. Where IMO this is not the case because you would slice through the wake every time. You had some TS jumps in there, but think you can do a video similar to this, just on TS jumps? I can do TS jumps but my timing has to be perfect every time and I have trouble going any farther than just W2W. Keep this videos coming! Where is the next place the handle is going?

      First day I cleared the wake I was stoked!! About the 3rd time I did it - I landed a foot short, edged the board, smacked the side of my head against the lake and blew up my eardrum. Drove home that night over a mountain pass, woke up with a bloody pillow and then drove myself to the ER. Killer headache! Good times just shorten your rope, jump the wake a few times and then bring the rope out to your normal length!

    I'm starting to find my timing with this and definitely feel a huge difference in pop when I do, however I struggle with getting pulled off balance when I do manage to time my release correctly. I feel like it really pulls my upper body over even with the rope at my waist. Watching your vid for the 100th time probably it looks like when you release your upper body doesn't really change position of lean and you release more with your legs. Is that the case? I think I'm releasing more by letting my upper body go more vertical than leaned back.

  • @boomizzz
    @boomizzz 3 года назад

    Hi Shaun! Friendly greetings from Russia. Could you clarify some points about load and release? When I try to do this I get pulled forward by the rope and it’s very hard to stay in control. When I abruptly stop cutting on flats the rope feels like bungee cord, pulls me and I tend to jump from HS to TS edge. I thought that this method used for HS back roll, raley and others... what is the difference between L&R method for back roll and simple wake to wake jump. Can you tell more how to use load and release for wake to wake jumps correctly. Should I stop cutting abruptly or more gentle? should I make the board completely flat or stay on edge a little bit? At what moment should I stop cutting - when I leave the wake or just before that? The last one, when you discuss speed of the boat you mean nautical miles per hour or simple miles like on car speedometer? 21 mi/h = 34 km/h or 39 km/h? And that is the big difference! Which is correct?

    In your detention video you talk about keeping a progressive edge up the wake but this seems to be almost the opposite where you're releasing your edge as you go into the wake. Is that the case and this is basically a technique to just get more air when necessary or am I missing something? I don't see how you can do a progressive edge and release at the same time?

    Hey Shaun at 5:28 you talk about riders squatting down sometimes on the approach to the wake. Does this add anything at all to the jump like height? It seems like it’s just adding more steps and difficulty.

    • @Shaun.Murray
      @Shaun.Murray  5 лет назад

      It CAN add air but like you said it can add another step. This can cause a whole bunch of problems for riders especially those who are having trouble feeling that "true" pop. Way more important to edge through the bottom and then that release of pop at the right moment, at the top of the wake, is where it lies. The power you can get w your legs isn't much compared to the power in the physics. Push, pull and pendulum. If timing is off, those feel like your enemy. But when on, whole different feeling!

      This is a good and common question, so I've added to my list of edits I'd like to do. Not sure how soon I can gett'er done but will do what I can. The answer is mostly yes, but the rope tying high doesn't necessarily pull you up, but it doesn't pull you down, which tying low can feel like.

If i ride 65 feet, wakes are just too narrow, and i am contantly landing into flats.

      That comes from shifting weight to the back foot. Keep your shoulders level to the water which helps keep your weight even over your feet.

      @@Shaun.Murray lots of people around my level, who are casual wakeboarders at my park always complain we can't ollie onto the obstacles, so the 'safety' turns into a massive ramp. It seems like a really scary part of learning as I'm not sure how the progression looks -- I can do a knee height ollie, but I see people doing 6foot ollies, so I'm not sure how to progress

      @@navidmottaghi3129 I'm not familiar w that board but w that speed it sounds like you are cutting too hard too soon and your edge is slipping out. Start wide, far from the wake, and go very easy, slowly increasing your cut (progressive edge) and when you get to the bottom of the wake, that should be where you are on your hardest cut. Not crazy hard but as you get to the top of the wake, that's where you start to release the power of the cut.

    His legs are far to stiff the entire time... going to hurt the knees. Yes you want to pull out for distance but man.. you've got to squat to get the good air. Stand up at the curl of the wake. That tactic is an entire new animal compare to what this guy is doing.. you can be looking straight down on the boat each jump if you want to be. These are wimpy jumps.

    • @Shaun.Murray
      @Shaun.Murray  Год назад

      Can you squat? Absolutely. Is it necessary and an added step that needs good timing? Yep. I teach people to take out the step of squatting to show you don't have to do much of anything and can then add the squat if needed. But in regards to your comment in how I'm going to hurt knees and how you "have" to squat. I don't agree with that and will have a contest with you if you'd like. 😃
