Kef KC62 Hands on at Lyric Hifi, Michael's follow up to the technical video with a demonstration

  • Kef's New KC62 Mini Cube subwoofer was reviewed in advance by Lyric Hifi a month ago and now we actually have one to play with! It's tiny, 2 by 6.5 inch woofers with a really long throw to move more air. Having 1000 watts helps too! You can hear the difference adding the sub makes. Also, is a subwoofer any good for stereo? It can be but you have to be careful, most combinations make the overall sound worse, this sub can make it better!

    Thanks Michael could hear the difference playing on my iPad and no headphones so that’s brilliant.

      Of course you can hear it - but you can't judge/compare it. Apple uses some "dirty tricks" to make it seem their small products have impressive bass output while it's mostly resonances and psycho acoustics. For my part, I hate the iPad bass ;)

    Thanks for demonstrating this. I listened with headphones connected to an iphone and could easily hear the difference; I think of course because you used a quality microphone. It shows that you can demonstrate different audio products in fact with more subtle differences providing good microphone is employed. I look forward to more...

      Thanks for that, we are trying to get the best recordings we can and it's great to hear that you appreciate it
      We do have a few more planned so subscribe and watch this space!

    Hmmmmm, I'm not sure I can envision a rise time issue at 100Hz between the sub and the satellites. Perhaps a latency issue in the D/A's .1 channel? As far as "I can spot the location of the subwoofer..." I do agree with this, for most situations. However, I've found that the harmonics, generated by most subwoofers, is where you can really spot the location of the sub. The harmonics give it away. It's not unusual for subs to generate 10% THD at some frequencies. Very low distortion subwoofer systems are very hard to detect their location(s).

  • @think2023
    @think2023 3 года назад

    If you can hear the location of a sub crossed below 80hz....its only because the crossover slope is inadequate, and or you are at high volume levels without the mids and highs.

    • @hellobooom
      @hellobooom 3 года назад

      Phase issues so yeh combination of crossover issue and time alignment is incorrect.

    This sub is lovely for music, not great for movies as but low output dies above 70db, don't let the power fool you, it is required with such low efficiency.

    Thanks Michael, great review. I have a Cambridge CXA 61 paired with a Rega P3 and Kef LS50s. The room is approx. 4.0m x 4.5m with a max 4.0m sloping ceiling up to a mezzanine. Do you think this would be sufficient to fill the space and would it match well? I generally listen at around 80db. Many thanks for any help.

      Hi
      I genuinely think it is your best match
      For stereo you need a fill-in that goes deep rather than a big gut-spiller
      The room is a decent size but I think the KC62 will handle that
      Best

    Thanks for the great review! How do i connect it best to the Uniti Atom?

    • @Antonio5559398
      @Antonio5559398 3 года назад +1

      Either rca preamp out on the atom or the speaker input. I would however recommend using separate components though ( preamp, power amp, ..). This way you can make use of the HPF of the kc62, going from preamp to sub input, than rca output to power amp input (with the hpf configured however best match your speakers).
      Currently i'm using the kef ls50 metas, kc62, schiit vidar power amp, schiit bifrost 2 dac, and schiit jotunheim 2 preamp headphone amp for my desktop system. I can honestly tell you it's endgame stuff, at least for me. I don't plan on ever changing my system again.

    Im considering a small subwoofer for my Kef ls50 meta's my amplifier is a Hegel H120.
    Im interested in the svs sb3000 micro have you heard this sub?

    • @michaelmcclean5169
      @michaelmcclean5169  3 года назад +1

      To be perfectly honest I haven't heard it. SVS is a decent company so I would have no worries that way. I would lean towards the Kef being more subtle for musical detail but that's just an opinion from the air as I haven't heard it!

    • @michaelmcclean5169
      @michaelmcclean5169  Год назад +1

      I would use speaker level to the sub in parallel with same terminals to the ls50
      The ls50 are still full range and the sub doing the lowest frequencies to match your room.
      Good luck, Michael

    Hi Michael, I have Kef R11's and an R2c centre, with key R5's as my rears....would this sub be powerful enough to fit with he current set up to make a 5.1 system? Decent sized room without being too large, mainly for TV/cinema and some music. Many thanks.

    • @michaelmcclean5169
      @michaelmcclean5169  3 года назад +1

      To match with the R11s I would go for the KF92, I know it's a but more but it's the right choice. See if you can get a listen at your dealer. Michael

  • @stevenbeau6268

    I am interested in the 62 but my question is. I’m running R3’s with a PrimaLuna with no sub out and am afraid if I run the speaker out into the 62 which is a class d amp, and then to my R3’s I will loose the tube qualities of the PrimaLuna. Your thoughts please...s

    • @michaelmcclean5169
      @michaelmcclean5169  3 года назад

      If you wire from your Prima Luna speaker level to both the R3s and the 62 instead of through the 62 then there will be no problem. That means the sub isn't cutting off the low bass so you will adjust the frequency and level accordingly. Good listening Michael

    Hi Michael, thanks for the video. May I know if there’s any speaker cables to recommend to connect this sub via the tiny High Level (speaker) input block to amplifier ?

    • @michaelmcclean5169
      @michaelmcclean5169  3 года назад

      Hi Matt
      It is tricky as the terminals are small
      The reason for this is that you are dropping the voltage down before amplifying it and it's unlikely that the cable will have significant losses at the frequencies involved.
      A decent cable such as QED 79 strand is about the largest that will fit but you will still have to be careful to be neat and avoid shorting.
      Best wishes
      Michael

    If you are using the Naim speaker plugs soldered then you will need to solder the extra wires on. If you’re using screw on plugs it’s easier .
