- With the Microsoft Duo, Galaxy Z Fold 2, and Galaxy Z Flip, there are now three kinds of folding phones with real momentum behind them. In this episode of Processor, Dieter Bohn looks at what each type of folding phone is good at and asks why you'd want to fold your phone in the first place.

What do you want to know about the Z Fold 2 or Duo?
Z Fold 2 by miles.
Surface Duo is just over glorified By Microsoft Phone Users (Yes all 5)

Nothing. Except, when is it going away 🤣🤣😂😂
Z Fold 2, will it work for longer time and a lot of folding ?

I have the dual screen LG V60. It's definitely bulky but it seems like the best of both worlds for now. A dual screen quasi tablet multitasking beast when you need it and a more traditional modern spec phone when you don't.
I feel the Samsung Fold approach will ultimately win out in this category as the tech improves and gets thinner and less cumbersome. For now however, I paid $450 for the V60 dual screen on a T-mobile BOGO promo and for that price my dual screen option is the winner for me!
Why do reviewers only look at the LG Velvet and not the more powerful, 8k recording, Pen stylus LG V60 which costs $800 and has a Snapdragon 865?
@@CallMeRabbitzUSVI The Velvet supports stylus too
I really don't get why the LG phones don't get as much love and attention. As you said, they have some advantages and have the best of both worlds. Plus it's not like the others have a particularly high bar and when you get it at 1/3 or 1/4 the price of the others, the compromises seem ok to me
All phones should have screen cases.
@@JagannathMoorthy no doubt, especially considering the price point. Funny to see analysts drift so far out from reality
Always love how the verge put on the 'why' question in the beginning of the video. It lets us think for a second why we want to see the video
I bought the LG V60 because with a pen and two working screen - I can get things done. Two apps at once, answer emails while looking at other content. It does work and works well.
i honestly do not understand why he gave it so much hate especially looking at what it can do for how much it cost. he really gave it a bad look
@@beavenjnr4187 those who think LG doesn't make good phones have never really used them. I had the V20 for over 3 years. Amazing phone that was a true workhorse. It still fires up and can handle most any task.
I think a lot of tech reviewers downplay the role of cost in reviewing devices because they seldom pay for the phones themselves.
@@beavenjnr4187 because he likes apple, I've a apple too but for this guy never it's good any other product
I looked at others, but I too just bought the V60. 5000mah battery and price can't be beat as this is a powerful phone. Also, I got the Factory Unlocked version too so can stay with Tracfone $20/mo plan
Dieter just broke 35 NDAs and 43 embargoes.
It seems like every RUclips channel wants to talk about the price of these Samsung devices being outlandish. I traded in a old note device and now the fold is much closer to the cost of the note 20 ultra. I understand the note 20 ultra is still rather expensive but this device gives me a phone and a tablet in one. I am a truck driver and travel often so I look forward to having a phone that lets me cut down on other electronics that I need to pack and charge! Now thanks to Microsoft and the Samsung fold I will be able to play my Xbox games as well! The other thing to consider is when the fold is in phone mode, I should be able to do most everything one handed. As someone who has valued the note series for having a large screen at all times I have not been able to one hand a phone since 2012. I look forward to not having to compromise! Add SD card support, an IPA rating, and figure out a way that I can use an s pen on the soft screen and I think the fold will be perfect! I also love the surface duo however it needs a lot more! It needs better cameras, wireless charging, a IPA rating, and the newest processors. It has already figured out the pen though! All I am saying is I look forward to the future and where we are headed with these innovations! I truly believe that these devices will have a lot of different uses for a lot of different people based on there needs.
Listen to this man!

This is THE BEST explanation of "foldables" I've come across. Great job, Dieter!
when i frist heard of the ms duo i tought they are being lazy turns out after seeing what it is meant for i kinda love it
Man, Dieter's writing skills are superb. Great video!
Loved the video, just a nitpick, I felt like the background music was more active and distracting than I'm used to from you guys. Otherwise great job as always.
Let me tell you this is the best review on the foldable phones as it really explains the purpose of different visions.
The most useful / most convincing use case I’ve seen for these types of devices is the demo Microsoft had with the Surface Duo, where they showed a Microsoft Teams video call that used the duo on its side, with the four talking heads of the video call on the top screen and the presentation slides on the bottom screen. This let you watch the slides and interact on the video call on two fairly large screens at the same time.
If you want a Galaxy Fold I have absolutely no reservations in recommending them. I've had one now for a year and it's worked brilliantly and very productively. It's totally transformed my mobile experience. The screen is as pristine as the day I bought it, the fold still looks the same and virtually undetectable and everything about it has worked 100% every time. It's undoubtedly the best phone I've ever had. But I'll certainly upgrade it to the Fold 2 when that becomes available in the UK as the front screen is bigger and the inside one is bigger too.
Dieter: ... and this, is Microsoft surface duo. It is grey.
...the only one of the three that seems remotely from the future. It's as much of a laptop replacement as an iPad Pro! Which is to say, not really.

I genuinely love your idea of folding phones making everything an intentional act. Can't wait to buy one and change my habbits
Just use a flip cover to intentionally close your phone!!
Dieter doing the Duo review is all I needed to hear😊
I really hope the Microsoft design takes a hold. I think it's perfect for how I use or want to use my phone.
@Kostas T I hadn't thought of that 🤔 but I think I'd use one of the screens in landscape
@Kostas T if the bezel was thinner, youtube would of been perfect...
@Kostas T RUclips on one screen while checking Twitter etc on the other. Most videos on RUclips are filled with so much filler content you don't really have to be paying full attention at all times.
It seems like the duo would make almost everyone I do on my phone a little bit easier but is it worth it?
Bought the first galaxy fold, absolutely loved it. Just preordered the z fold 2, im loving this folding tech.
I couldn't wait for the answer to unfold! I got a little unhinged waiting!
I loved my purple Lotus LG flip phone and so anxiously waiting for a similar product to be durable enough to go back to the same form factor (small square). So, I keep watching how the Z Flip continues to evolve.
Review of the Microsoft Surface Duo. Actually, using the Surface stylus integration and day to day use with the stylus. Also, can you sketch, paint, draw etc.? We’re all very curious about that.
Excellent job presenting the current foldable landscape and presenting the signature devices. I really enjoyed Dieter in the video, and for me, that's saying something. I'm usually a bit leery of his articles and videos on non-Apple devices because he has often come across as an antagonist in my opinion. This was great for me. Real perspective with good information and just the right amount of opinion and humor.
Thanks.
I want to know how sw updates improved the overall device (system, camera, bugs) since the time you received it to the time of the review of the Surface Duo. Also, how many updates you received.
I can't wait for these. I walk a lot from place to place for my job and do not want to carry a backpack w/laptop or a tablet around to send information or edit any information that is necessary. DEX is great too.
06:20 really enjoyed what you had to say about the the nature of folding phones to keep you from being hooked on the phone all the time
Pre-ordered mine! Can't wait to review it myself :)
Dieter does the everything exceptional, exceptionally!
How is the battery life on the galaxy's and the duo
Kudos to Dieter for somehow not bending one of the phones the wrong way when demonstrating how they open at the beginning.
Dieter and Mrmobile have two of the most convincing voices/scripts in the tech market. Don't always agree, but everytime I watch these reviews I go "Damn, I should've bought that one."
Can we run two same applications running on each screen for mutlitasking on any of these phones?
I use the split screen option on my s20+ all the time, as well as pop up view. So why would I get the Microsoft one?
It's weird that you can't show the MS~Android OS, since Best Buy has them on display in their stores.

I'm still waiting for us to get the tri-fold tablets from Westworld.
Hey verge! I need z fold 2 review!
Thanks for the video that I didn't know I needed!
Your point about closing the phone and being done with it... that being an intentional act... is brilliant and something I never thought of before. Great observation! Love your vidoes!!!
That actually came from Panos Panay.
I like the Samsung Galaxy Flip but I believe that foldable phone technology is too immature to use. I generally prefer normal Samsung Android Phones like s20. The foldable phones are overpriced.
Stay safe, stay healthy, stay at home❤️
Galaxy S Flip is just more compact in your pocket. Other than that, I don't really see the difference between that and the normal standard android phone. Definitely overpriced. And fragile too.
It is probably just a fad of 2020
Can someone please give me an iPhone?

lg is the best because u can convert it to a normal phone... and u can have 2 screens whenever u want.... and cheap
every phone needs a screen case option
Agreed. It straight up beats the Microsoft duo.
Don't forget a lot more durable than these fragile foldables. Less thick when you take your phone out of the case too.
well i like the LG accessory screen concept... don't know about the implementation... same with the surface thing
Why do reviewers only look at the LG Velvet and not the more powerful, 8k recording, Pen stylus LG V60 which costs $800 and has a Snapdragon 865?
I love the concept, I wish Apple would adapt it. People should have the option to get a folding screen, it has all the benefits with very little draw backs (asides from the whole seam down the middle).
G. Fernandez If these take off successfully then they will. Apple may already have a design in the works but is staying silent on the issue as they test it. As much as Apple enjoys hype, they usually play things safe by only announcing their projects on the cusp of releasing them.
Dieter, could you talk more about ergonomics on both reviews? About using them both in folded and unfolded modes and usability in that regard, it seems there's a lot to debate in this area
Dieter making even hunch posture cool. I love this guy
Can you answer this question for me? Does the outer display comes with preinstalled screen protector from the factory?
I want to see how well you can read on the Duo and ZFold one-handed.
Kindle books spanned across 2 screens in column mode?
What about web browsing? How stupid does that feel on the Duo?
Nice VID man 👍👍👍, Just a Honest Review, thats a great thing 🙏🙏🙏
duo looking very promising, looking forward to buy the 2nd or 3rd gen duo
Did you buy the 2nd gen duo(duo2)?
What kind of watch are you wearing?
I literally just pre-ordered the Z Fold 2. I use my tablet and phone a lot and it's cumbersome to carry them around plus then I have to get a case to stand them up when I'm watching media or showing content so having both in one is very convenient. I multitask a lot too and having those multitasking features is very good for me. If I bought a tab s7, and a galaxy note 20 it would cost as much or more than the z fold 2 so its worth it
Can you do a comparison on how videos play. I'm curious how the 4/3 aspect ratio compares to other taller but thinner phones
what’s the watch you have tho

Foldable phones have been such a conundrum but have always been some thing on my mind and I really appreciate seeing the verges review.
As an artist, I find myself working with mobile art software but always limited by the size of a small screen. So have a foldable phone seems like a great idea in theory, if I didn’t break my wallet. But with the price even higher than a tablet and phone together, There doesn’t seem to be much incentive to buy one. There doesn’t seem to be much incentive to buy one.
At another point, my friends were mocking the phones comparing some of the following phones to their Nintendo DS, but it was a great year in theory, having an experimental gamepad, but with no other purpose.
I really hope phones that fold can penetrate markets of different economic levels and expand outside the niches, it’s really exciting to see the developments over the past few years!!
This is so true. The minute these foldables launch at a regular phone pricepoint, I will get myself one. This would replace whatever the ipad mini is for. 🙂
There doesn't seem to be much incentive to buy one
Lol I hope you've gotten a Galaxy Fold since they got Wacom powered S Pen support w/ Fold 3! ☺️
What's the authentication method for the surface duo?(writing this from z flip 5g)
Thanks. Useful review - pays attention to difference and the fold feature requirement at all.
Shouldn't the duo be in the same category as the LG velvet since they both have a gap when they unfold?
I'm looking for an absolute productivity beast that can still manage media consumption, and pen support is a must. At the same price point, I'm torn between the note 20 ultra and the surface duo.
The note seems like the absolute pinnacle of slab phone design, perfect in basically every way.
But the duo feels like the future.
What do I do?
Awesome review! Am going with Galaxy Z fold 2 though..
I usually use my phone on dual screen mode. I like having two apps open and do stuff at the same time. Duo is for me. Although I wish the gap was smaller because having it as a one screen for media viewing is kinda difficult right now. Unless you lose yourself on the movie and the gap is no issue I don't know
Congrats on your 3M subscribers.
I’ve used an iPad mini at home, nearly everyday for five years. I do t have a keyboard case for it, and I don’t have it in a cover. Ive never wanted to fold it in half. Come to think of it, I use it at home, but I don’t think I’ve ever amen it to work or away from home - I have my phone for that. That being said, I do have a laptop with a 360° hinge, and I do take that out of the house. I’ve used it at coffee shops and offices, and people always look a little shocked when I hand them a pen, fold it over backwards, hand it to them and ask them to sign a document. I can see this working even better on the (unreleased) Surface Neo.
1:34 where can I find this wallpaper?
You can’t.
3:50 excellent attention to details.
That's exactly what I like about this guy.
Duo will be really useful for students as you can make notes on one screen while having your online class going on on the other screen
1- Great video
2- deserve more views.!!
3-Dieter is amazing.
@ 1:40 I feel that Galaxy Fold 2 and the Surface Duo are both actually dual-screen folding phones since they have 2 distinct screens with a different hinge mechanism 🤔
I am looking forward to the review of the Duo.
Since I carry my smartphone in my pocket, if folding a smartphone doubles the thickness then a folding smartphone does not work for me.
I love how you compared the Duo experience to using two devices at once. Can you compare it to using an ipad and a phone at the same time? Because that's what people usually do.
Issue is that duo isn't a tablet replacement
It's more of a two things at the same time...
That's why fold is better but the price is still way too high
I hope that Flip Fold Phone becomes the industry standard. I love that idea and it’s not too far removed from user experience right now, so familiarity for the end user helps push the solutions for a folding phone’s engineering challenges
For me i like Z Fold2 more than the Duo, i mean you can have multitasking on the Z fold without the gap between the two screens, and you have a outside screen to do something quick like sending a message, check the weather, and you have a big screen to enjoy RUclips/Netflix
Dieter is a national treasure. Change my mind.
Dieter: with the original Fold, since the cover display was so small, your interactions were brief with it. But with Fold2, and its bigger front display, are you finding yourself spending more time on the cover display, thus negating this idea of having to use the phone more intentionally, like with Fold 1?
And how many times people will want to actually open the screens now. Unless gaming or reading a book, I hardly see people, on average, bothering with the bigger screen.
@@zenithquasar9623 do you think people buy ferrari so they can drive 30m/h most of the time ? That's kind of stupid i guess
@@curlynicks Yeah, the perfect analogy...
The Duo name exploration drop was smooooooth as hell.
Q: about the Duo. How is its performance as a mini productivity computer like the ol' ultraportables of the 1990s or the Netbooks of the 2000s. Something for word/txt docs plus some ppts + some web searching in a highly mobile form. thnx
is it good for academics, teachers, writers, photographers (to work as a base for slr camera images) who have to be on the road.
I think the line between the dual screen and big fold phone is going to blur more in future. The dual screen will reduce the gap between screen more (maybe using edge corner). And with the Z Fold2 flex mode, this means apps are going to be optimized with separation in exactly the middle.
Unfortunately, that'll also make another fold concept less desireable, like those with 3x fold or folding not in middle equally, because no apps are going to optimize for that form factor.
Honestly love your video comparisons, Dieter Bohn. Waiting for Pixel 5 vs Samsung Galaxy (X) vs OnePlus Nord.
Because "normal phone you flip shut" and "thick phone you unfold into a tablet" are so different, I don't see those going away. I CAN see the "two separate screens" idea going away if we can get the hinges and screens material high enough in foldable screens; then there may just be either with or without external screen flavors... although I can also see the two screened guys getting a foothold with a good physical keyboard, that would be more difficult to implement on the single screen devices! The Neo should be particularly interesting...
What do you think is the difference between the Duo and the LG Velvet, since you put them into different categories
The difference is the LG velvet has a dual screen case... It's not really a dual screen phone like the Duo is Also Duo has more refined Software specifically for Dual Screen...Whereas the Velvet's Dual Screen software isn't as good.
I constantly use the multitasking/split screen function of Windows 10 on my desktop. I VERY RARELY use less than 2, but often use 3 or 4 apps on my huge monitor at once.
How they are going to handle the app optimisation problem
I want to see how gaming is on the Surface Duo and samsung fold for games like (Granblue fantasy, Fate Grand Order) since the screen's aspect ratio is very strange.
The Duo is just so cool
