Having a more useable outside screen should reduce the times one opens, and closes it, thus reducing stress on the hinge. Smart idea.
Another smart idea for you. Just use normal phone.
@1stRanger Why? If they can afford it, it's their money to experiment with.
Or increase stress by being even more hooked as everything is so easily accessible.
@1stRanger sure.
But it's not as cute though.

I've been using a Zflip3 for almost 2 years and the feeling of separation you get when you close it is one of the best features. It's like closing your laptop at work and giving something else your full attention. It makes you a lot more conscious of when you are spending time on your phone and when you are not which is a really good thing.
I think we underestimate how powerful that is. Our attention is so fragmented and scattered because of electronic devices, it's important to have a psychological cue for ending one thing and beginning another. Plus, you can slam it shut when annoyed, and that's just a joyful stress reliever.
Try and buy me some, so that me too i can use good phone
YES and thats why really messed it up now totally unnecessarily. Really dont know what samsung was thinking. This is their most important phone for getting people to switch rn. Really dont understand.
using the phone open or close is the same as a traditional cell phone.
no difference of time spent on phone
Or how about, putting your phone in your pocket? Wild concept. Much separation.
After years of being an iPhone user, I've made the switch to the Flip 5 and I couldn't be happier. This is definitely my new go-to device - it's super fun and incredibly practical

hii!! i’m planning on getting it but i’ve heard mixed reviews about durability! how has it been holding up for you?
Its so crazy how in just a few years we went from those wonky "foldable" screens that felt like folding a rubber mat, to practical and usable folding screens.
And if you go a bit further back, everyone wanted flip phones because of how cool they looked. My first one was a motorola with digital external "buttons" to play/pause and change songs or radio stations.
And the tech is only going to get better from here.
no its still overpriced, overhyped, and underutilized
@@gwthrpain How is it overpriced? It's literally the same price as other flagships.

I have a flip 3, and find the half-open is super useful as it's essentially a built-in camera tripod. Honestly one of the biggest positives of a folding phone.
Have you had any screen issues?
Still love my flip 3 ❤
@cr9179 kinda. The screen protector that Samsung applies by default sucks (starts cracking a few months in). I got that replaced about a year in with a high quality one, and have had no issues since.
Yep
My phone is still under 2 years contract and i got few more months left, but the actual screen cracked about 6 months ago. Anyone has that issue?
I'm probably gonna be sticking with the Flip style phones for a long time. My favourite "feature" is that they fit in my pockets while also being big enough for modern standards :)
Thats what she said 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This! I have a Spigen case on and still it gets so small compared to my old S21.
yea i got the fold which is cool but also huge and not so compact and easy
How's the battery on them? Main thing for me is camera and battery usage, but I also loved my moto razr and I kept it 😊
I like my z flip and I'm an old lady
For those using a Fold/Flip (and dont know about this yet): You can use two fully seperate launchers on the two screens using an App called Tasker. Its a bit annoying to set up, but once thats done you have another big option to customise the device to your needs.
Personally I used Niagara Launcher on the outside and Hyperion on the inside screen of my Fold 3
niagara launcher is amazing, very clean minimalistic. It works great on the fold z5 too if anyone is interested.
You actually don't have to download another app. You just side swipe and add your next screen using the double screen icon

I remember when the folds and flips first came out, I dismissed them as useless toys that would probably break in the hand. However, I gave the Flip 3 a chance and it was a solid little phone for me for two years. So far, I'm enjoying the Flip 5 immensely. I'm looking forward to great things from Sammy's flippies and foldies.
No, your correct. They are useless, more fragile toys.

You either die a foldable hater or live long enough to try a foldable and end up liking it 🤣
I got mine yesterday and so far it's been great. I recently dropped youtube premium and missed the ability to close my z flip 4 and leave a video playing just to listen to. Being able to run it on the outside is fantastic. I'm one of the people that use the device in a half folded mode all the time, so the better hinge is always nice to see. Considering promo credit I had and trade in of the Z flip 4 it only cost me $50 to upgrade and I doubled storage to 512G so was a no brainer for me.
Why did you drop YTP - I cannot fathom living without it

I really respect the fact you did a follow up review. A lot of reviewers only talk about the flavor of the month, jumping from product to product (for their reviews and blogs) and you never see how the product they're reviewing ages. Seeing someone change their opinion or saying how they feel about it months or years later is great and more useful for the consumer than the "first impression" videos.
Ive never had a phone this nice and fun. I'm not a huge tech person, but as an everyday consumer i absolutely love how i can use the outside screen for everything. Its quick simple and easy ❤
Hi how is the battery life?
@Mimi-gw7hy it's pretty good for me. I'm someone who uses their phone constantly, like for hours. And I end up charging like once towards the afternoon/evening. So if you are someone who is a casual user you'll have no problem with the battery life.
You can use the screen of non flip phones for everything and it's right there all the time
@@cowarddonnie-ji5yzy’all love bringing up other phones that don’t flip but you need to understand people miss flipping open their phones and want that aesthetic back without using an old generation phone
You don’t want to flip open a phone, that’s cool but I do cause I loved that back when I was a teen
So is it durable ?
There's a number of other specs that weren't mentioned in this video that I thought would be mentioned since the video noted he was wrong about how important the changes were from the flip 4. The most important hardware changes include the NITS went from 1200 to 1750, UFS storage speeds went from 3.1 to 4.0, USB-C port went from 2.0 (no idea why it was still on 2.0) to 3.2 and Wifi went from 6 to 6e. Obviously a number of performance improvements but those are side effects of the faster cpu/gpu.
Great info 👍
Also it now has Bluetooth 5.3 instead of 5.2 like the older Z Flip 4.
Still a useless toy.
@@DemonSlayer-vh8uy That's what my dad says about all smart phones. 😀

Love my Flip 5. The outside screen is a huge upgrade, and I use a ton of apps on it, including watching videos. I just love the small form factor.
Me too. I mean I loved the form faction of the square, compact, 6th gen iPod Nano with its display. The Fold 5 and Motorola Ultra+ remind of that device but obviously a much larger form factor and incredible functionality. I'm actually excited to get one of these.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! :)
Question for you that have one, seeing you won't have it in a wallet case or anything like that. It's designed to go into your pocket, how badly does the outside screen scratch? That would be my main worry having it in my pocket with my keys and what not (current phone is in a leather case along with my cards).
Bro, do you think you could have the tesla app working on the outside? Thx
I miss smaller sizes. I hate the size of the iPhone in your pocket (clunky, falls out etc…) I like it in hand but hate it in pocket. Every year I’m thinking about the flip and this one they came out with is nice for sure
as someone who uses a lot of early 2000 nokia phone with the same resolution as the front of the z flip 5 this is a blessing
MKBHD is such a unique watch for me because I personally don’t really care much nor understand much about this tech, but I’m always finding myself on his channel waiting for his opinion on a product I didn’t even know existed.
How his opinion about things you don't care nor understand much is any different for you than opinion of literally anyone else?
@@1stRanger because I don’t watch anyone else. That’s exactly why it’s so unique. I don’t watch tech RUclipsrs. But he is one of the few RUclipsrs I’m always finding myself watching.
@@divinemattress Are you in love? That's the only explanation I can see with such a solid reasoning as yours.
I'm a motorola loyalist and bought the Moto Razr when it came out but I also just purchased the Z Flip 5. The Razr closes flush and I dont have a crease on the inside screen. I do, however, like the Z Flip 5 outside screen functionality compared to the Razr. Both have their strengths and weaknesses.
Great vid btw.
Another thing I like about marques is that I watch the videos for the charisma and the snappy editing, the phones are the side character 😂

I’m glad he admitted he was wrong. That outside screen is awesome
No, it's not.
@@1stRangerI really don't get the appeal. It's so underwhelming
What is so fantastic about it? The flip mechanism creates a problem that did not exist before and then a second homescreen is installed on the outer wall so that the actual homescreen does not have to be used? That makes no sense at all. Just use a smartphone without flip function and you also have a homescreen on which you can quickly answer your messages xD
@@mrdiamondhands468 This phone solves a huge issue for me, I can't use any phone 6"+ because my hands are small and phones shouldn't in my opinion be a two hand ordeal. This is finally a reason for me to upgrade, since basically no one makes phones under 6" anymore.
Just for transparency, are you also commissioned on sales of this phone you are praising?
I have the Flip 4 and absolutely love it! I love the small size for the pocket while folded but while open the screen is virtually as large as my One Plus 7 pro. I don't use the outside screen on my current phone much because it's rather small, but I could definitely see myself using it more on the Flip 5. Definitely, for Spotify, app notifications, and quick text replies. The outer screen on this model is awesome IMO. *Edit - I just pre-ordered. With trade in of my Flip 4, only had to pay $110.

I've used this phone for 2 days now and I absolutely love it! It works great for me, especially the outside screen.
The production quality on these videos is higher than the actual product advertisement, goes to show how much effort is put into these reviews. Great stuff!
I've actually noticed better battery life. Not a huge difference but it's noticable. I've also noticed the crease is not as pronounced as the flip 4. This was definitely a worthwhile upgrade, especially if you're coming from a flip 3 or older.
thank you for this feedback! i held off on the 4 b|c i just didn't see enough reason to upgrade but after this review + feedback from folks like you in the comments, i think i'm ready.
It's a newer chip with better efficiency and of course the crease is slightly better. I wouldn't call it a worthwhile upgrade based on two minor improvements that we already expected. If you have a flagship phone, this is a downgrade.
The crease from 3 to 4 was dramatic. I can imagine that leap from 3 to 5 is impressive in the grand scheme of things.
A lot of people are talking about the crease but that's just a downside of a folding phone I definitely notice it on my flip 3 but I don't think it's a reason for upgrading (personal opinion)
I also have the 3 and ive made my phone last longer than everyone i know i averaging 10 and a half hours to 14hrs in a day the most just from txting was 1 day and 12hrs
It's true, because years of RnD is no joke, and Samsung undoubtedly is, ahead of all with foldables. What i like about the video is that it's not just a constructive criticism, but a simple user review which helps a company know more about where they should be headed in future with their product. Marcus bridges a great comm between users like us and companies. Always amazing reviews, thanks Man.

the flip 4 screen was breaking on many people within 2 months of purchase. Terrible iteration.
@clownavenger0 it's not a whole majority of people though, I didn't get a single piece of damage of having a galaxy zflip4 & 3. I often use my 3 more than the 4.
@@MythicDelta5 well the 3 did not have the issue. Only the 4 did. It was fairly widespread.

Always have admired the flip over the fold…I think for the compact size and more comfortable carry in pockets ❤
Yes! Me too. And it just looks so darn cool. :D I love the Motorola Ultra+ too.
It safer to carry in your pockets too, as you can shove it down far enough without it poking out your pocket and so someone passing close by cant easily snatch it out of your pants or whatever.

Got my Flip 5 yesterday. Wow, definately better than my Flip 4. So solid & opens & closes so smoothly. Great for checking notifications, messages & emails without having to open. Probably won't use coverscreen for most of the apps but honestly that's why it has big screen watching Netflix, utube etc. The fact that it's so compact is the main draw card & Samsung has nailed it. Would never get the Motorola Razr Ultra..

Had a Flip 3, then a Flip 4, now a Flip 5. From the 3 to the 4 because the screen protector started to detach, just in time for the 4 to come out and Samsung's trade in program made it a no brainer. With the 5, same situation - and maybe when the 6 comes out I'll be doing it again. That said, got my Flip 5 yesterday and was up and running in no time. Absolutely a huge difference. I’m in the same boat! I’ve been using iPhones / Apple products for over 10 years, I currently have the iPhone 12, and I’ve hated it since like the day I purchased it, which was over 2 years ago! Been contemplating on whether I should stick with an iPhone and get the iPhone 14Plus, which is a little bit bigger than the regular 14, therefore the viewing screen is a little larger, or change to the Samsung Flip 5, which I believe when flipped open, the viewing screen is the same size as the iPhone 14Plus. I appreciate you giving this a second look. I have supported the Samsung flip project since gen 1 and I can say the flip5 has really hit a home run. I use the Z Flip 3 for over a year now, for me I actually like how small the cover screen is because of the privacy. I think the old-fashioned shell flip phones were satisfying to the touch in hand, in pocket, and functional use to the ear for talking. ..Minus pulling the antenna 😂
Just have to make it a smartphone ability for texting, GPS use, however make Google very voice command oriented.
It's pretty insane that we have gone full circle since the first iPhone having a 3.5 inch screen (and everyone lost their minds how much screen we got) and now the outside screen of this Flip 5 is 3.4 inches and it's considered basically miniature and barely usable.
That transition at the beginning of the video is so smooth.
Dude your production quality is just insane. You are singlehandedly driving youtube towards making T.V look ages behind in quality. Keep it up 💯
I have owned Flip 3 for 2 years, and my opinion is "great concept, bad hardwire". The main problem is that the hinge causes severe "scrathing" on the screen, both in the actual hinge area and rest of phone(it's not very noticeable in dark rooms, but still visible (and looks terrible in sunlight)). Now, it is possibly I could have prevented this by applying a new screen protector (after the original one wore off), but if so, they should have been included in the box with a warning that they must be used.
Another infamous issue is of course the battery life, especially when you get down to 15% and it's a matter of a few minutes before it's dead.
It looks like Flip 5 have improved some of these areas, but I feel like the previous phones were full priced prototypes which have made me lost trust to a degree.
What Samsung did right:
✅ Larger cover display
✅ Improved hinge
✅ Closes flat
What Samsung could've improve:
❌ Lesser crease
❌ Larger battery
❌ Faster charging speed
❌ Better camera
❌ LTPO cover display
One day we'll have a perfect Flip phone, but not today.
Correct 💯
Yes yes
Yup. There are a couple of features that they want to keep to their ultra line up. The camera and battery life being the biggest ones. If they provide as good a camera and a formidable battery life and charging speed, people will buy this instead of their "ultra" phone.
But you have to agree that Z flip 5 is the only one that is nearly perfect
5 generations and still the display can be damage with a nail!
I'm a z flip 5 user. In my opinion, I prefer it over the fold. I love how compact it is and how i can watch RUclips on the cover screen and prop it up like a mini laptop. Anyone that wants a smaller phone, i recommend the flip. But if you want a tablet like display for streaming, i say get the fold.
@deedolly6144 the camera on the zflip 5 is not good. I would not recommend to anyone that cares about picture quality.
@@shinyencounterpokemon2153🤦♂ its more than good enough, its better than what the iphone 14 pro has
@tezy0193 I have a galaxy ultra and a zflip 5, I upgraded from the 4 recently. From personal experience the camera on the zflip 5 is inferior to the camera on the ultra.
I specifically answered the questions regarding a comparison to a ultra, seeing as I have access to both devices I can provide adequate feedback. The person who asked was inquiring about the zflips ability to capture a detailed moon picture similar to what the ultra can accomplish, in all honesty no the zflip cannot. If you've tried you'd see that as fact.
I'm not saying the zflip has a potato quality camera, im just saying the ultras camera is far superior, and if someone was looking for a phone with specific specifications like camera quality, then in all honesty there are better options than the zflip 4 or 5, they're not terrible but they're not that good either.
@@shinyencounterpokemon2153fair enough, sounded like you're saying its "potato" to me
that 800 dollar difference tho lol almost got the fold but couldn't justify it when I have an ipad mini already
I really like that ability to open something like Spotify as a full app on the front screen. Especially when you wanna do something like switching between playlists or albums because assuming you know what you want to listen to it can be done nice and quickly without being bothered by other things on your phone.
Once these Flippy Foldy things become Thinner, Lighter and have the same level of camera Tech as the main flagship phones then I could be interested in buying one!
The fact Marques is more consistent than 50% of US marriages and been doing YT for 15 years is admirable
😂😂 "US marriages"
That intro transition🔥 Outside screen is perfect for small hands and quick check for notifications 😅 Great video as always 🙌
As always he is so interesting !
You can just as quickly check notifications on a regular phone that doesn't fold though. So.... why?
@@alanhonlunlito prevent getting stuck on your phone and ending up on instagram for hours
@@alanhonlunli a quick check can lead to start using the phone so the outside screen minimize that to happen 😅
Being able to shove it in a pocket while still being a full size phone is what I like. Now I think I still prefer how the RAZR OS uses the outside screen so I for one would love to see a direct comparison video for those of us still on the fence about which to get.
How small are your pockets that you can't fit a current flagship in them?
@@seventeen9718 if you like sitting on a brick go for it. My preference is not to.
@bobbykombi I respectively disagree. I have been a samsung user for 7 years and I recently switched to the Google message app and strictly use Google photos. The backup is more reliable in my opinion across androids and is more user friendly.
@@seventeen9718 I actually prefer larger screens but then again my pockets are non of your business.
@@timnaccarato4503 Google messages sucks, much inferior to Samsungs text message app. Try importing albums into Google photos, what a mess. Nothing beats the good old memory stick which companies have ditched. At least LG kept it til the end.
I've happily used my Flip5 closed almost 99% of the time. I only need to open it for those apps that don't work well on the outside screen. I hope the new versions of this phone would have a higher resolution outer screen just so apps could render their UI better.
7:10 omg look at that animation😍
My issue with the Flip 4 that made me have to trade it in was that it wasn't nearly durable enough for my day-to-day use and especially the weather. The non-existent dust resistence made it way too easy to get dust stuck in the folding mechanism and it became audibly crackly when I folded it only after a few months of normal use. Since I live in Minnesota, it was -20 degrees fahrenheit last winter and my screen protector cracked and bubbled in the middle when I tried closing the phone after using it for maps in my car. I'm much happier now with my Pixel 7.
My 4 is a tank! What are people doing with these things?!?
Thanks for stating that you live in Minnesota. I've just moved to the state during the summer and I've been eyeing this phone. I definitely don't want a phone that's not going to be durable in the weather here
I switched from an iphone 13 pro max, I wanted the flip for a few generations now and the refinements were the deciding factor, seemed like the form factor had matured enough and I'm enjoying it so far ❤
Nice downgrade.

Marques is always LEVELING UP! This is insane.
I love how thorough this review is. Can you please do one for the fold? I'm thinking of getting that one, but not really sure between 4 and 5.
I really like my flip 3 which has held up without issue since I got it at release, so it is great to see them keep refining the design.
You're a brilliant reviewer, Marques, the best. I always watch your videos from start to finish. Excellent work, mate!
As someone who traded up from the 4, I was honestly most shocked by how much better the hinge feels. I've been going through my 4 to clear it for trade-in and there's suuucchhh a massive difference, feels so much cheaper and less sturdy.
the 4 or 5?
I also feel like that grease is a lot less noticable on the Flip 5 when compared to th 4.
But couldn't it also be, because the flip 5 is just brand new and you used the flip 4 so much that the grease just got little bigger over time? Have you compared it with a brand new flip 4?
@@rjj00 4 being cheaper feeling, 5 being the better one.
@@kakao7079 Honestly if the hinge on the 4 already feels that bad after a year, then there's some major issues going on haha. My sister got hers only a few months ago so I'll try hers out as well.
Obrigada pelo audio em Português, ajuda demais pela acessibilidade. Grande análises de gadgets 😊
The intro!! MKBHD’s Touch 🔥
I like how the Mopto Razr+ allows any app on the outer screen without needing an app. Also, the phone has Dolby audio. I used that phone for about a month and a half.
its good for 6 months only so you have another 4 and half months left.
Moto razr 40 ultra is amazing phone ,loving it.
I loved your video on the Z Flip 5, but I think that the bigger screens in the Z fold are way more useful for watching videos and working on documents...
the ability to avoid accidentally doom scrolling is huge.
It's the main reason I wanted this phone.
You are the apple of my eyes. Literally and figuratively. Watching your videos is like watching an artist perform their craft. Apple can't even put out better presentation than you!
7:18 “a flipping phone” 😂
I refuse to pay $1k for what is, literally, a base model Galaxy S23, with less features, that folds. Even with the cost factored in to the hinge design and the second, smaller display; this should be a $699 - $749 MSRP product. "There's no such thing as a bad product; just a bad price."
@cjjk9142 not that I’ve noticed, but it does feel a bit dense
If you are in NYC on the train you can use the outside screen so no one can snatch your phone. Just hold it in your palm and use one hand to type. I would Slide type if you're messaging.
Great review content-wise, and perfect production value! I can't even start to imagine the amount of work that would go into such a high-quality video. Thumbs up all the way, mate.
That dbrand icon skin makes the glass square look so much better. Great video marques!
I actually watch movies and TV series on the outer display late at night because it's small, doesn't shine the light in my face too much, and is easy on my eyes. Plus I just find it more pleasant fixing my eyes on a small screen and holding a small cube instead holding my phone in landscape mode.
Y’all be reaching to try and make these foldables eomething 😂😂
@@toptiertech7291😂😂😂😂 💯💯💯
@@toptiertech7291Not reaching I'm just saying what I do. I got all kinds of phones and this is what I do with a flip phone.
So far it seems like the second screen is going to be used mostly the same way a smart watch is
I’ve been waiting, pondering when to make a switch to the flip and the 5 makes me want to but I’m so use to using apple. No question I like the size/ form factor over a stationary rectangle. The other thing I like about it is having the option to stand it up and you can record what you are doing like art. Not sure why I’m still hesitant to change from an apple product when I went from Sony Ericsson to apple phone. Thing that worry’s me the most is; I go to the beach a lot like 6 months out of the year and the phone goes to the beach (music, reply to emails or messages and sometimes scroll online)
Typing this on my Z Flip 5: Yes, you were wrong my friend, this phone is awesome 🤣
I do have 2 things that stood out pretty much immediately that I'm not thrilled about.
1. They removed the fingerprint sensor swipe functionality. Maybe not many used it, but for me it is like second nature to swipe down on the sensor to pull down the notification panel. Absolutely hate doing the gesture and nothing happening now.
2. Being able to open apps in the outside display and having a full keyboard to reply on is great, but now whenever I get a text message, if I tap it it opens the entire app/conversation. So now I am unable to see the whole text(s) without opening the app, and if I do and I don't want to respond immediately, then it removes the notification entirely since I've already opened the message. Silly ik, but I liked being able to tap a message/email, read the whole thing, and go back and still have the notification active as if I had never seen the message for me to respond later.
Also, the battery life so far has been pretty damn good. I've been daily driving the Flip 4 for the past year and I can immediately tell the difference so I do think the new processor is doing its job there despite the battery size being the same as the Flip 4. This is almost a 2 day phone for me and I am a moderately heavy user!
#2-YES! Needs a patch asap. Need to descend keyboard easily. Otherwise this thing is AMAZING!
I love the outside screen! Spotify, WhatsApp and my train tickets on the outside screen is perfect. I also love that you can use it for camera framing. Also its just very pleasant to use it for watchnig youtube videos etc on the go.
Ain't buying those kinds of phone till it matures.
The lack of DeX on the Z Flips is a nightmare. I purchased a Z Flip4 in march and after 4 months of gentle use, the screen randomly went black while I was using it. Initially, the only ways I could think of to get the files off the phone without a working screen is to get it repaired ($400~) or to use DeX, which isn't supported. I ended up buying a USB hub with HDMI and USB 3 so I can connect a monitor and mouse to it.
I think the Flip 4 is only USB-C 2.0 so no video output at all, not even for screen mirroring. The Flip 5 has USB-C 3.2 with DisplayPort Alt Mode so you can at least mirror the screen. DeX would be really nice though. Totally ridiculous that the Flip 5 still doesn't have it.
@DaverZ Damn. I still haven't tried it yet so I just assumed it'd work. 🥲 Traveling so no access to monitor at the moment
@@imandrewzeng There is actually a way to get video output from your Flip 4 with a DisplayLink adapter and the DisplayLink Presenter app. There's a certain adapter you need but RUclips keeps deleting the comment when I post the model number.
Marques is so sharp so i look more at him than the phone
I'd love to see you get your hands on the Tecno Phantom V Fold! Might be kinda tough, I don't think they sell it in the US, but it's at the top of my list for foldables I'd buy
Nothing really exciting about the phantom fold it looks like other Chinese foldables and the processor and software isn't all great
@@oluwadarejoshua8595nothing exciting about any of these foldables really 🤷🏽♂️
I have a very hands-on job, and it's pretty busy all the time, so honestly, the quick access to the apps without opening the phone is going to be very useful for me.
It is true because years of research and development are no joke, and Samsung is unquestionably out in front with foldables. The video provides straightforward customer feedback that helps a firm understand where they should be going with their product in the future, which is what I enjoy about it. Marcus effectively connects customers like us with businesses.
