My Demon 170 is Broken.. This is What I Feared the Whole Time!

- Watch as I take my Demon 170 to Bradenton Motorsports Park for private testing and find out that my Demon is having some major issues. Most drivers are having significant issues with getting their Demon 170's to hook at the track; despite this, they are trapping fast speeds. My car has never trapped more than 144mph and has been slowing down significantly. This race night did not end as expected and ended up with me having to tow my car to the dealer.

I used to race boats X. Here's what I learned....the faster you make em.....the faster you break em. Good luck X. I know you love to race that Demon 🤑🍻
Very true words !
That's why the Plaid is superior and actually has seats 😂
my biggest concern would be the dealerships ability to figure the issue out...its not like they have the top machanics who really know that engine.
They are used to servicing Durangos and Pacificas...
100% agree. The dealer mechanics are definitely not trained or knowledgeable about pure race cars. The parameters and mechanics of this car is not at all your average dodge that needs a software update or an oil change. Good luck. Not to mention, how are they suppose to test the car under race load? Going to be a lot of back and forth.

You guys have no idea what your talking about there are codes stores internet to that tcm all the tech needs to do is read the parameters and report back to dodge engineering

As a old drag racer from the 70s racing Super Stock Dusters and Demon, I find it almost inconceivable that they even put a warranty on these new high-performance cars. Back then, if they could prove you were drag racing, they'd void your warranty. Something is seriously wounded on your car. Either the transmission or engine or hopefully your computer? Street cars that are raced regularly will absolutely never make it to the end of the warranty without something going kaput. Love your videos, and I hope your car gets well soon. Good luck!
Mopars rule!
Where I lived in the mid 60's there were a lot of street racers, some did track racing.who Most at that rime switched from Fords and Chevys to Mopars after the Max Wedge appeared. One guy was going to change tires, he backed out of the bay at a local garage to do one last burnout on the old ones. He forgot to shift into 1st, four speed, blew the trans. Chrysler fixed it under warranty but told him last free repair. The local dealership knew all these guys were racing. Nobody would race the Max Wedge owner, no point. A guy I knew had a '65 Plymouth with a 426 wedge. He took the All New England Championship in B Stock Auto. My favorite was Wild Bill Flynn who drove the Yankee Peddler Dodge from New Haven.

I think that is the story on these. No one is getting claimed numbers on the track
Man ... Too bad. The Tesla Plaid Channal has got over 900 passes on his Plaids! No issues yet. Except old tires! Go Figure!
The Tesla Plaid was actually designed to do this stuff. The Dodge Challenger platform is the biggest gimmick in Stellantis Dodge Chrysler Plymouth history. They made about 12 different cars out of one car shell. And the best 2 are the V6 sxt and the 5.7V8 cars. All the rest of them break down constantly. LOL
900 passes on something that's gonna be pretty much the same over and over again is wild.
Not everyone's Demon broke down several went 100s of passes and 1320s have a t brakes and drag mode hold up very well...

Wow, unexpected turn of events! Sounds like the Demon might be having some gremlins. Hope it's nothing serious and the dealership gets you back up and running quickly. So sorry to hear this. Good luck if you need parts, it took 3 months to get my RT Classic fixed after someone hit me head on. Fingers crossed for you.
Good luck with the dealership techs. I hope you get one who knows anything about the Demon and tourqe reserve.
Hope there's no major issue, racerX! A perhaps interesting bit of info on my 1320. For two years, from 2021 through till my last race of the season last year, I ran slower than guys with the EXACT same cars. At the EXACT same tracks, together, in the same conditions. I was getting beat by regular scat packs, with nothing more than lighter tires and (sometimes) a tune.
As time went on, I slowly was able to eliminate myself as the problem, through repeated trial and error and looking back at the data, comparing with others, etc. I had a feeling throughout 2022 and the first half of last year, that it was definitely the car, not me. Turns out, it was. And it wasn't fixable without a tune. After dodge sacrificed all of us scat pack/1320 owners with NO performance upgrades, I went to look elsewhere.
As it turns out, the problem was pretty simple. "Catalytic converter overtemp protection" was robbing me of power, big time. Only fix was tuning it out. It cost me some money to get an unlocked PCM and get it done, but the car is running better than ever. Looking forward to getting a full season of testing in. I say all this because who knows, you may have something similar going on that literally isn't affecting anyone else.
Curious how you figured that out? Glad you got it figured out.
@@raymohwinkel4219 I had the suspicion that something computer-related was screwing me, but got final confirmation from the tuner, who confirmed what was going on when he saw the initial data logs. The car would run great times, followed by a half second or more increase in time, in the same DA, with plenty of cooldown time. It was a real pain in the ass. I've since gone a full half second+ faster than even my very best times pre-tune. And I've barely gotten the seat time with it to really test it out.
After watching his later passes I would agree with you. The hotter it got the more it bogged.
It's one of those things you'll figure out. Thanks for video. 😁👍🏻
I hope it's nothing big. I enjoy your content and you really out there Driving it. And Man, that car is... Violent !!! Dodge is going to have a Hard time trying to replace that experience...

I can't imagine how hard it would be to build a reliable engine that is expected to be constantly drag raced on a production level car. I have a feeling Dodge is going to be repairing a lot of these cars under warranty.
How many of these are just sitting as a collectable.
I can't imagine racing a production level car. And I've never heard of a race car with a warranty.
Stellantis won't make a dime on that car. They'll have to give him 2 more engines just to make warranty. LOL
I totally agree. a race car with a warranty spells trouble. to many variables and no one in there right frame of mine would agree.
@@ladonecamron Well the fact that this is the second drag car Dodge has produced with a warranty says that you're incorrect and everyone in their right mind would absolutely take a warranty on anything the spend their hard earned money on. Only a fool would say otherwise...at least that's what Dodge is betting on...again, for the second time.
Did you do a TPS reset?
Im not sure if the same but on a Ford you disconnect the negative cable and connect it to the positive terminal (still attached) with alligator clips or something similar for a few minutes.
Turn everything off in the car and start it letting it warm up completely and do the relearn procedure.
Before the Demon was bogging it sounded like the shifting was off. Ive had similar issues in both Ford and GM when the computer isnt seeing the correct throttle position sensor. It can make the trans shift harsh and all over the place and it doesnt necessarily trigger a code.

It’s down 15mph, that’s about ~150hp off. That’s why it finally hooked.
Good luck, man. I hope it's an "easy fix".
The dealer tech is going to love this.
When your 60 foot improved and your ET didn't make a big gain, I assumed it was a torque management issue. I'm glad that you made a foot brake pass because that's what I would have done. About the only other thing that could have been done at the track is a power reset or pull the addaptive fuse to reset the factory peramitors. I hope the transmission is okay or they can get one quick if it isn't.

Those Demon 170s were blowing engines and having all kinds of problems in development. I'm not surprised with that much power that they're not reliable.
I had the same issue, while my car is a hellcat, it just takes longer to leave the 1st gear. I told the dealer several times to check he transmission they keep saying nothings wrong with it.. Please update us what you find on that 1st gear situation. I think it could also be the driveshaft
Try a battery pull. Ive had my hellcat sometimes not launch right at times I do a 30 min battery pull and its been fine after that. We just put a 15 inch conversion on our 170!
I know it is different with the Demon 170, but I'm in the market for a 392 car and I'm seriously thinking of getting a used pre-Covid built car for reliability. I hope you get this beast sorted out - awesome car!

I daily drive a 2020 Challenger scat. I bought it new and it now has 61000 miles and 4 winters under its belt. Only issue was a bad wheel speed sensor that kept the suspension in track mode. Fixed under warranty. This car still puts a smile on my face everyday ✌🏻

Sorry that really sucks! I doubt the dealer can figure it out but hope they can.
Your videos make me realize why i bought a skat pack and not a demon. Or even a hellcat. I just don't have the knowledge or know-how to drive these cars anywhere near where they were meant to go.
Sounds good looks good. Definitely something going on though. Wondering if you changed out that driveshaft also, if you have a differential brace and a race brace helps a lot. Rear tires need a bead lock
Hopefully it’s fixed soon but mine took two weeks just to replace a alternator from dealership

good choice on adding air pressure when your sidewalls start deforming.
You ought to get yourself an HP Tuner Dongle and Use its Log feature to record your passes. Don’t require nothing that’d void your warranty like taking the computer out, it’ll work as a scanner tool. I’m sure you’ve met plenty of other mopar owners at the track that would be happy to share some channels for you to log what’s happening to the car and educate yourself on what you need to keep an eye on especially hot lapping it.
Despite the misconception no car, even the 170 let alone any high performance car. Is made to just go back to back after runs. After racing here in Florida for well over two years, you learn to respect the conditions and how it affects every car, track conditions, and above all else you as a driver.
Your issue sounds like something I dealt with, which inevitably cost me my blower. Heat is the number 1 hellcat killer, off the line and down the last 300’ it’ll cost you a lot. I’d stress to the dealer how progressively the car has been getting slower and slower.
Did yours have the chiller that cools it down with car AC? Isn't that precisely what it's designed for?
@@ShawnGilbert1967 Regular cats do not have a chiller like red eye's do. Just uses the fan to cool down the fluid

Doesn’t surprise me with Stellantis at the helm.
I got the last of Dodge in 2021. Actually my car rolled out of the factory in December 2020. Before Stellantis took over. It will be my last Dodge.
I’ve heard lots of people complain about the Demon 170 not living up to the hype.
The Demon 170 is a rip off from Stellantis
Your right.
I heard you make the comment in your video that the demon was made to go back to back to back runs. No vehicle making power like that is meant to go as said. They need rest between passes. The car was definitely trying to protect itself and probably transmission related. Hopefully they figure it out and replace the parts as needed.
Hey i got a question for anyone listening i got a supercharged 2020scat challenger i race i cobra mustang from a dig twice on the street recently in eco mode and track i won both times but eco mode it spun quite a bit but in track mode it hooked just a small chrip so track is definitely better any thoughts anyone?
Quite a few guys on a Demon 170 FB page have eaten spark plugs. Burned the tips off of them. I think some of them switched to NGKs
I know a lot of Demon 170 owners are finding that the factory spark plugs aren't great (the quality and the gap) and also noticing that over E70 and the stock injectors are maxxed, even over 100% duty cycle. I'd look into either one of those, @RacerX
I hope it works out. It's an awesome car regardless !

Ok thanks
Why not put some weight in the rear to help with traction? Im just curious because I hear and read that all the hellcats, Demon, and the redeye all have trouble with the rear tires gripping.
What’s Torque reserve and how do you know when it goes into that mode??
The first two clean passes looked and sounded good, but on from there, it for sure went bad from there, hope
nothing too major, something software going on weird with the trans.
Man that sucks what happened with the 170
One thing I noticed is when you launched the demon after is bogged out it did launch hard for like a millisecond and just you know bog immediately after
Could be software update.
I have 2019 Jeep Cherokee overland 4x4 obviously not Demon.
Center screen keeps turning off.
And Chrysler dealership had it overnight and went pick it next day, got there said, software update on 9-speed Transmission 15 mph roll and press accelerator did want go.
That fix problem, last night 15 mph roll accelerated smoothly.
I was complaining about that for 3 years dealership kept telling me no update for that, now its great.
My other car 2016 Chrysler 200C AWD has same Transmission never had issue with shifting.
I have tried spinning tires it will not spin or chirp tires.
Tech guys at Chrysler probably working on software update, not just Race X having this problem, other owners to most likely.
You can definitely hear a difference in sound when it started to bog down. I really feel Dodge has become less consistent with quality of the cars in past few years. Especially with the final call models.
Dodge has never been known for its quality. It’s cheap horsepower except now they overcharge for it.
I blame RacerX not the Car or Stellantis.
I like the all 5 lugs being wheel locks. Smart.
Why lock his wheels???? They are even the carbon fiber wheels. LOL
I just can't imagine racing a computer car, straight from the dealer. I have never raced a computer car, and I have never used a trans brake. I currently have a small block (REAL small block, not an LS) S-10 that I built myself. Carbureted 383ci. No turbos, no supercharger, no trans brake. 2 speed Powerglide built by a well known builder. I built the engine myself, and used actual race engine parts. NO COMPUTERS. This is not a junkyard special. I have over $50K into it. Nothing came off the assembly line. It runs low twelves. No, that's certainly not crazy fast, but very good for what it is. The big deal is, I have been racing it almost every weekend for the past 4 years, and nothing has broken. A good race car not only has to make power, but it has to hold together. I can't believe that Stellantis knows how to build a race car. Was that engine and trans hand built, or did it come off an assembly line? You really can't compare a bought car to a built car.
That's correct. Not built to stand up too full time drag racing. Most people roll race this big turds. You got sucker into buying this electronic turd.

Stab in the dark here, but is it possible falling air temperature into the evening plus Florida humidity eventually stacked up to the engine running soft? Plus you spoke of some wind in effect, which could further lower air pressure. Maybe the DA just deteriorated to low pressure swamp air that evening, to the point where it seemed like something was "broken"?
Then all of that disappears when they check it at the shop, and they tell you there is no problem evident with the car. Then you take it back out on the track, and the problem is utterly absent.
Hell, maybe all that moisture condensing out of the swamp air puddled up and then got somewhere the engine didn't like?
By any chance do you have a TAZER hooked up to your Demon 170? If so, this may be causing your car to stick in first gear. I had that problem, and I had to CLEAR all codes before my Demon would shift properly. Cant use TAZER securtiy option with Demon 170 without clearing vehicle codes each time you drive it. Also, if you are using high octane and not E85 some stations sell crap and you are going to get spark knock which will cause the vehicle to tune down quicly. If you are using gas and not E85 be certain to add octane booster. Good luck with everything, and let us know what the dealer tells you.
Thank you my friend .. no Tazer on board! Still awaiting answers
The problem is the amount of torque on the trasmission... in these type of cars the trasmission should be as strong as possible, but not without problems in the clutch or structural damage caused by launches...
My Dodge caravan has a 130K miles on it with no transmission or motor issues ever. But then again, it's not a launch craft. LOL
Most race cars with trans brakes that are run at 100% load all the time require 10x more maintenance then normal. Trans fluid is probably junk and trans over heated on brake.
