  • Big Loaded Coal Train Passing The Amtrak Train Station In Tyrone, Pennsylvania On The Norfolk Southern Pittsburgh Line. Check Out The Cabooses & Train Station. I was on my way to Strasburg to film Thomas The Tank Engine and decided to check out this small town that is just east of Altoona. Amtrak stops here but I didn't get that lucky.
I had a quick look around between trains. There is a branch line spur that comes off the NS mainline and goes through town. It doesn't look that busy but maybe someday I can return and get a train on it. The first train is a westbound intermodal train with 3 locomotives including a Union Pacific Railroad locomotive. I was checking out the cabooses and the historic bridges when a second train came.
The second train was an eastbound loaded coal train. It had a couple of DPU locomotives mid train. I actually filmed this same train earlier in the day at Cassandra, Pennsylvania. It had two more locomotives on the rear when I caught it there but they were cut off in Altoona before it got to me the second time.
The third train is an eastbound tanker train. The covered hopper cars at both ends of this train are spacer cars. They are there to have a separation between the flammable contents in the tank cars and the ignition sources of the locomotives. I thought this would be the last train before it got too dark to film. However, after the tanker train passed I noticed that the crossing lights were still flashing . The fourth and final train of this video popped around the curve seconds later.
The fourth train was a westbound intermodal train with three NS locomotives. This train was booking pretty good. After that train passed I left Tyrone and drove straight to Strasburg where I spent the night. I will have some videos from Strasburg soon so stay tuned.
Filmed Thursday, June 22, 2023 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

Great action at another cool location. Stack trains are the most un-aerodynamic of all. One article in Trains Magazine said one third of the power on a stack train goes to fighting wind resistance. Enjoyed it much, thanks JT!

Tyrone, Pennsylvania is a terrific location to railfan. The sweeping S-curves through the town provide good views of the trains as they come and go past the former Pennsylvania Railroad passenger station. The trains that you caught at Tyrone, Pennsylvania were long and impressive. Thank you for stopping here to catch these trains, Jaw Tooth!

You asked about the SIP by the mile marker 222.2 here. The SIP stands for Signal Information Point, control cab signals. Have a wonderful summer and Happy Rails To You :-))

Caught it on a day the museum was closed, bummer. Maybe next time.
The cabooses were cool. Need 1 more in the middle. Since the railroads beginning to 1967 (when I was a kid) it was Pennsylvania.
In 1968, 69, 70, maybe 71, it was Penn Central.
1972 and beyond it was Conrail.
Although PC was a massive failure it was still major merging history between 2 railroad giants
    Pennsylvania and New York Central.
    Just my thoughts 😉.

Here is something that might impress you. I live down the Rail Road line in the next town of Huntingdon. There are at least 3 of those trains every day 365 days a year. There is one that passes my house around 10am. One that passes my house around 2pm. And the last one I know of passes my house around 4:30 pm, Each train has at least 180 to 190 cars full of coal each time. It's hard to believe there is that much coal in the ground and is moved everyday by the rail road. I have no idea where all of that coal goes to. There may be a train of coal that passes my house at night. The trains run all night long and after dark I don't know what is going past my house.

My birthday is next Friday. I’ve been a fan for quite a while. I’ve gone through several accounts but I have always subbed to you, millennium force and multiple other railroad content channels. I’ve been a huge train fanatic since childhood. I always wanted to work for the railroad and where I’m at Union Pacific runs through here. We gets lots of trains per day and we have an old train station from 1890 I believe and the station is now my towns chamber of commerce building. It has a little area for train fans to watch trains go by. I even got a horn salute once there too. It would be really cool if you could come film some trains here sometime and check out the old depot/train station. Anyway keep doing what you’re doing. The content is great and can’t wait to see more.

Nice video, Tyrone is a great spot to hang out. Sure used to be back when I was at PSU. I remember having my scanner on and reliably being able to tell when an eastbound was coming by the detector at 225.9 going off for track 1. That meant that in a minute you'd see headlights coming from the right/west (if you face the tracks when on the platform).

Another great video JT! I love your Pennsylvania videos. I've been to Horseshoe Curve and after seeing your videos I want to check out Cassandra and Tyrone too. Cassandra is less than 30 miles from my home. Love seeing the dogs, I can't believe how big Loki is getting! Keep up the great work and may you have safe travels as you drive to shoot more great videos!
