'SILENT HILL' Retrospective - SCREAM SEQUENCE.

- 24 years ago, Japanese video game publisher Konami trekked into the survival horror genre for the first time. With Resident Evil, Dino Crisis, Parasite Eve, Clock Tower and more already standing tall, how could the debuting 'Silent Hill' possibly make a last impact? At the end of the day, that answer is pretty simple, even if the game itself is not. With a pinch of David Lynch and a dash of Dario Argento sprinkled into its DNA, it's no wonder why this game is as strange as it is. Join me today for another episode of SCREAM SEQUENCE: Razor Sharp Reviews of Your Favorite Creepy Classics... on Silent Hill.

I’ve been a silent hill fan ever since I was a kid and I played the silent hill 2 demo on those old PlayStation demos discs. It truly is my favorite franchise ever. I am so glad you decided to cover a game series that means that much to me.
Hope you enjoyed it!
Che ricordi! 👍
3:23 Old school wrestling and old school survival horror are two of my lifelong favorite things and here you are combining the two for a segment in a Silent Hill 1 video. This is exactly why I love your channel so much. Hope to see you hit 100k subs come spring time.
This was an absolute banger, Ian. You always kill it with these, and dude, Mr. Beef is a LEGEND for doing what he did for you. Truly a saint for life.❤️
Thank you for this one, as Silent Hill will forever be special to me and my brother, and we can’t wait for the Resident Evil movie retrospective as that’s definitely one of our favorite movies growing up. See you on March 31st for that, and I can’t wait for GM Showdown, soon. This is an amazing time to be a fan of 616, and I’m proud to be with you on this journey, Ian. DanDan for life and I love you.❤️😊
Your wcw/wwf silent hill/resident evil comparison is really fitting.
Homecoming/book of memories feel like wcw in the year 2000.😬
Every retrospective video on this channel is gold, I hate that you don't have at least 1 million subscribers.
Thanks man. I work as hard as I can, I have for years and years. I can’t force anything, all I can do is make sure I’m proud of my work. I appreciate it.
I never met beef I didn’t enjoy, and Mr. Beef proves that the name is well respected. What a great guy!
I was never familiar with Silent Hill when I was younger, so I’ve only experienced it through videos like this. It always struck me as a very claustrophobic and confusing game, but I know it’s well loved by its fans. My only actual experience from playing myself was the infamous “P.T.” Demo from a few years ago, and that was something else, man. Would have been interesting to see that get completed.
Great video, looking forward to the Resident Evil movie coverage next time!
I have watched this video already 10 times! lol 😂 I love Silent Hill on the PS1 but I just wished the camera was better! Ian this is such a good retrospective!
Been waiting for you to do silent hill
It’s today! These Friday drops are literally my favorites Ian! Wish they came more frequently but I guess that rarity is in part what makes them special!
Yoooooo, Mr.Beef is a real one, Ian!!! Hey man it's amazing seeing the community wanting to help the channel too!
I still play the original every year, I get a longing to play it on my classic for Halloween and it still never disappoints, I've actually played it at this point more than the 2nd, 3rd and 4th, I feel like it's become as legendary as the 2nd game, that locker moment still makes me jump 😂 and the soundtrack is the most unique of all the games, that mixed with the grit of the locations and story combine perfectly to create an experience that's still as unerving today as it was back then, great vid man and can't wait for the SH2 one 😁👍
Great retrospective! My friends and I were in college when this came out, and we spent many nights playing it. We loved Resident Evil for the B-movie acting and jump scares; but Silent Hill gave us bad dreams because it was nonstop unsettling. The sequel was just as good, too.
Dude bad dreams for suuuuurrrrre. Silent Hill is good for that, hahahahaha
Once again a great video - thanks a lot for all the work, man. Unfortunately the RUclips algorithm is super screwed up - I had no notification at all for this one - just saw it while scrolling through your channel…
Thanks for watching. This did far lower numbers than I was expecting and you’re like the 10th person to tell me you didn’t even know it existed. That’s always nice.
Yours are the only teasers/trailers that I ever watch. Chiefly because they're so good, but also because they don't spoil anything. Cheers and love, DanDan
And yes, any time there's a premiere I make sure if there's a bonus to watch when I get off work in the am
Silent Hill is my favorite horror franchise! The story is 100% confusing and the puzzles can be crazy, not gonna defend it's shortcomings. Playing through multiple times helps with the story. Figuring out who is lying and finding that one scrap of lore you missed is sooooo satisfying. (the next 3 games help fill in story gaps too)
You have to do a classic Konami PS2 game that no one ever played but me and my brother in law. SHADOW OF MEMORIES. It had five endings and one invoked aliens. As soon as you said that it hit me like a ton of nostalgia bricks.
I looked it up (from your later comment with the correct name) and it's not crazy expensive, that's a plus.
Been waiting for this one.
Silent Hill didn't come out until I was in my early 20's, but it was a welcome change of pace compared to how action oriented RE was starting to become.
I still have my PS2 copy of Silent Hill 2... I even bought "Homecoming" for my XBox 360.
That one is better than it gets credit for...
Your video has me wanting to play them both all the way through again. Thanks, Ian!
Thank you for this one of my favourite games growing up
Just got home and saw this was up. What a great surprise after a long day at work!
Damn it I just missed the premiere! Great stuff man!
So hyped and looking forward to this. Never played the Silent Hill games but it is Scream Sequence and Ian always makes videos of games and topics I havent played or played much and make then enjoyable. So let's go
Your awesome Ian thank you so much for honest take as a hardcore silent hill fan I really appreciate it silent hill fans can get kind of full of ourselves when come to deep diving into the abstract lore in the franchise and I mean that in most represent full way possible I love the silent hill community and thank you Mr.Beef that’s so generous of you.Thank you for your hard work Ian and I’m looking forward to your future content
Hahahaha thank you man, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
One year later, this video still hits! Was there ever a part 2?
So Ian, you're telling me that I have in my possession a $200 original copy of Silent Hill that I purchased in 1999 + a memory card with all my original saved games from that year?! ... Cool.
Great review, as always.
Legit my favorite RUclips channel. Thanks Ian love your content homie
Great work again, Ian. Really enjoyed that. Think the first time I’ve watched a live premiere on RUclips, too. Wasn’t disappointed.
It's been a while since I commented I usually watch u on my PS4 after work but to been supported u for about a year now love the retrospectives
Thanks man! Glad you like them.
Bravo 👏! I've been waiting for you to cover this game for a long time. I haven't been on the tube very much due to some outside of the tube things that have come up over the last 5 months. You are so close to that crazy 100k milestone! I look forward to your future vids and can't wait for you to hit that milestone and beyond! 🤟🔥
Have never seen a full story playthrough, only parts, for the first game. I was gripped right when you started talking about that "4th" floor. The idea of the dream and real world has been done a lot but what you're describing is is so interesting. A normal guy who is pushed into using force reminds me of the Cube/Platform like movies and Cry of Fear. And I can imagine the developers thinking of hope spots like having Harry be lead to the school... could easily just be a vision in his mind but it gives them a new enemy type to make and place to design. All of these games have to have environments and monsters in them but weaving them into an engaging story is another task. That's the side that I'm interested in. I think Deadly Premonition manages this as well in how it connects you to the characters despite some wild and silly things going on
King of retrospective idk how am just seein this but like I said king
Man this video didn't do the numbers I'd hoped for. Maybe you were one of many who didn't get notified. I never know with RUclips these days.
THANK YOU MR. BEEF. I loved this and all of the video game retrospectives. You do amazing work man. Keep it coming. If I could I would help on patreon if I could. Your doing a great hob
Great work, always keeping it real! I've only ever heard great things about SH, but nobody else ever says much about the obtuse and frustrating parts. SH2 on ps2 is an absolute must IMO, glad to see you have the copy now!
Going back watching this for like the fifth time... This is such a great video, my dude
Um, of course I want to see your thoughts on silent hill 2! SH1 is still my favorite game in the franchise, but I can't help but also be incredibly nostalgic for 2. Much like you, I share very fond memories of playing these games with friends and trying to get the different endings together, as well as piece together the convoluted story. It's insane how much our lives mirrored each other, my brother. Cheers to another awesome video.
Ian is the 🐐 of retrospectives. Amazing job as usual! Thank you!
Love the vid man! Im a massive SH fan so im hoping you will cover the others eventually
I was stuck on that damn piano for YEARS. I feel like I just got lucky one day.😅
Mr. Beef, you’re doing the Lord’s work. That’s a fantastic name, btw. Also, it’s good to know my copy of SH2 is now worth $130. Thank you Ian for another superb retrospective on an amazing game from my youth. I look forward to seeing your RE movie retrospective. And hoping for an Silent Hill 2 retrospective since now you have a copy.
We will see! Thanks for watching.
Why not just send the games back when complete with the reviews?
Man this scream sequence seriesnis fucking badd ass man I love it keep em coming ty for uploading
HELL YES Ian I'm so happy you made this 💓
Enjoy!
Thank you Mr. Beef, these videos make my day. Much respect 🫡
Ian for October during Halloween Season you should do a Scream 1996 retrospective documentary! I love that movie! I still have a ghost face mask. 😁👍🏻 👻 🎃
Mr. Beef is a legend, and I hope you make a video on SH2. This video was excellent!
I remember playing Silent Hill for Playstation and it was my first experience with horror videogames. I admittedly became a fan as it was scary and the world and atmosphere just made you feel like you were transported to another world. Plus the music is just amazing and creepy. I never checked out the secret endings as I would always get the ending with Harry and the baby. Plus I never replayed the game to unlock any unlockables. Definitely have to replay this on my PS3.
I always have love and fond memories for this game it was first game I bought myself. I had to look up the puzzles and not ashamed. I enjoyed the atmosphere and how the world changed sequences happened. The final Lisa scene still gets me to this day. I don't how I managed but still have the ps1 copy of the game. I don't a huge fan of remakes but this game really needs one.
Never got into this games like I did resident evil but I knew it was good man! I've seem Walkthroughs that really showed how brutal the game's were. Now, you have gave me a better understanding of it brotha! Great work man, another awesome retrospective👍

Highly appreciated brudda, thanks for watching!
This game's story sounds like something a 616 Shockwave booker would write. Great video though! Nigel must have helped.
Eyyy, next Scream Sequence is essentially the History of Resident Evil bonus episode! Very exciting!
I can't wait for you to eat these words with a fork and knife. I'll sell a 616Shockwave bib you can tuck into your little shirt!
@@616Entertainment If you win, it will be so close that it couldn't possibly be a solid. A spoon will be fine! #KAW
I found the key without a guide. You may not believe me. I played SH2 and 3 before 1 so I explored so much. I found it. Big fan of yours and SH. Take care.
Thanks to Mr. Beef for helping, would be down for more Silent Hill so I can learn about the series.
Also, you said you were losing it playing the ending; maybe this is very forward but I think it would be cool to sneak in a Twitch stream or a few of games like this that you're gathering notes for. I'm curious to see your reaction to some of the shit that happened there 😂
I remember renting the first Silent Hill back when I was a kid. What happens at the end of that first sequence where you’re chasing Cheryl scared me so much I slept with the lights on that night. 😂
In 2021, during the Halloween season, I decided to play through the entire game for the first time ever. Didn’t have a physical copy (wasn’t lucky enough to get one before prices went way up like I did with most of the others) so I downloaded it digitally on my PS3.
It’s currently my third favorite Silent Hill game and I’m so glad it held up as well as it did. Team Silent really knocked it out of the park on the first go. I just think they did better jobs on the two sequels that came later. By the way, I’m all for you doing an episode on Silent Hill 2. 👍🏾
I love that story, hahaha. Dude it's a "keep the lights on" game for sure.
Sono le 3:50, sto in ansia per una mia situazione, eppure, non posso non vedere anche questo tuo gameplay di Silent Hill...è proprio Silent Hill che mi chiama, tra poco sentirò anche la sirena e le interferenze radio!
Scherzi a parte, complimenti e grazie come sempre!
PS: l'abbraccio vale anche se in ritardo di due anni?
I fucked with this video DanDan. I’d love to see a sequel to this. Can’t wait for next months episode
Whenever you put out a new retrospective I always end up binge watching your older ones. Good work, I dig your stuff broseph
I could tell you in excruciating detail what Silent Hill is about. I've played it so much and have read up on the lore a lot. I love Silent Hill.
HELL YEAH. Been waiting for this!
Heh, nice. I've seen Akira Yamaoka live, and the music was top notch. Wasn't any of the horror or ambient stuff - which I was down for - but it was a good represntation of Silent Hill's vibe.
And yeah, just this morning it was foggy where I live and I said something to the effect of "that's some Siilent Hill shit right there"
Although I’m a horror fan, Silent Hill never appealed to me in the way that Resident Evil did back in the day. I watched a little bit of my brother’s play through of Silent Hill 1 and 2 and he seemed to enjoy them. I know the remake for Silent Hill 2 is coming out soon. I found the trailer to be intriguing so I might cop upon release. Thanks for the in-depth retrospective. Really enjoyed it. I am certainly looking forward to the Resident Evil movie review as I actually like the first movie 😅
I never get tired of hearing, “What’s up, dandan’s!”
Good, I have no intentions to stop saying it, hahahaha
I appreciate all of your content all I watches retro videos things from the nineties and play wrestling video games so please sir keep it up and thank you!!!
Happy Friday Ian! I can’t wait to watch this video!
11:58 You missed the extra layer of the elevator suddenly having a fourth floor because 4 is the Japanese version of 13, it's unlucky in Japan because the word (supposedly) "sounds like" the word for "death", so many elevators in Japan skip the 4th floor and go straight from 3 to 5 like western elevators skip the 13th floor and go from 12 to 14. That's why the elevator suddenly having a 4th floor is even more ominous.
An absolute classic. My personal favorite of the series is Silent Hill 4: The Room...still wish they had included it in the Silent Hill: HD Collection on the PS3.
P.S. Good thing my original non-"Greatest Hits" copies of Silent Hill and Silent Hill 2 are still in great condition. I had no idea that they're worth that much...and back to the shelf they go.
It's easy to forget nowadays, but at the time, Silent Hill's cutscenes were state-of-the-art, rivaled only by Final Fantasy VIII imo. I still remember the promotional image of Cybill staring at us, with a sly smile. And there's something about the eyes of Silent Hill's characters... The bleeding nurse traumatized me for life.
Love the game, think its scarier than SH2 in some ways, but I concede that it's rough around the edges, when it comes to camera. It was going for 3D to set it apart from Resident Evil's static backgrounds, but RE was always mindful of where to place things for encounters, whereas SH showed their inexperience in that department. And the puzzles were definitely obtuse. I needed help on nearly all of them. But I feel like that lack of hand holding was common back then, and I kind of miss it
Anyway, I guess my copy of this game is pretty valuable. Very cool of someone to send it to you (and Fear Effect, which I also own and LOVE!) Thanks Mr.Beef! And thanks Ian
“Radio, what’s going on with that radio?”
Thanks for the hard work man. Man this game is as iconic to me as resident evil.
Oh man I have never felt so much affection for a man called Mr. beef.
First time I've heard of Silent Hill was when Silent Hill 3 was making the rounds on the PS2 but wouldn't been able to play until the HD Collection on the PS3. I did had the first Silent Hill on my PSP before it crapped on me. I've seen both movies. First movie was great. It was pretty faithful to the source material. Revelation was a mess.
So glad that this franchise is making a comeback
You make the best retrospectives.
oh hell yea. I remember playing this when I was eight when it first came out. It was amazing. ps. mr beef is a real one
Thank you Ian and of course Mr Beef too.
I can hear the Castlevania music in the background
Ian ma dude got to admit hearing that you couldn't solve the piano puzzle when my 12 year old non native English speaking self could, makes me wanna hug that little mupo
"We can make better zombies than Resident Evil! More guns! BIGGER guns!"
- Capcom to itself circa 2004
Great as always man 🤘
GTA Vice City theme was a great Tone Setter too.
Love the silent hill series. Wish they would re make parasite eve aswell. ( lmao, I know that's not the content if this video but still, needed to be said.)
I rented this game. Played it in the dark. Never again. :D Too scary!
Amazing stuff Ian
Silent Hill is a good series!
It is, it is.
When Ian mentioned bathroom money, I said "wow he talks about this dude a lot." I guess he read my mind
Hahahahaha, I nailed it. Yea, we grew up together. He was the buddy I hung out with every single day, so he'll be a part of many of my stories, lol
23:18 im just gonna pause right here and mention the bloody piano puzzle. I rented this game before owning it and I got stuck on the piano puzzle..
Edit: 23:54 I fucking knew it. Thank God I wasn't the only one. This puzzle pissed me off so much as a 12 year old. I was years away from having home internet access and there was no way I was gonna figure this shit out without a guide
THANK YOU Ian and Mr. beef!!!!!! and yes do SH2!!!!!!! that game is infinitely batter than one and I love part 1
24:45 literally the point in the game that I gave up. This was well before the internet was an option for me. Lol
Never played the first one until a few months ago, and I must say, it’s way more unnerving than Silent Hill 2 or 3. Graphical limitations aside.
Raiders Shadow Icons, a 616 mobile give me money game.
Hahahaha. Published by Melon Magnet.
Resident Evil is like Death Metal while Silent Hill is like Black Metal
About the story. Yeah it's very hard to follow and confusing.
and major answers can be found in the game, but require some back tracking and exploration along with multiple playthroughs that "can" get you killed.
1.
Alessa was used as a vessel to give birth to the evil god (the one you fight in the good ending). But she was badly burned and broke her soul in half to stop them, that one half is Cheryl which Harry and his Wife found in the game intro.
The other half was Alessa herself but now badly burned and wheelchair bound, and was held captive by the cult until they could find a way to complete the ritual.
2.
The cult was trying to find the other half for years. And when they finally found Cheryl, they used their magic to lure her back. Harry, confused by Cheryl's screams to her calls to silent hill, Decided to bring her there thinking he might also find answers to her past.
3.
The town of silent hill is filled with Alessa/Cheryl's fears and nightmares due to the rituals done on Alessa for their god's coming resulting in the town getting destroyed and basically turning into a depiction of hell where its residents were damned.
And whatever you are fighting, it always has something to do with Alessa's past traumatic events. This is kinda subtle in the game but the 2006 movie makes it quite obvious.
4.
Every character that you encounter as well is somehow related to the cult directly/indirectly. Sibil being the only exception.
5.
In the end, Alessa and Cheryl are merged together by the cult into that divine glowing being. But in the good ending, the baby is Cheryl's reincarnation.
So basically Harry did save Cheryl but now in a new form. This leads to Silent Hill 3.
And yeah, you need a guide to play this game as a first timer, or else you will have a rough time. In fact many give up after the hospital section when those crazy jumping monkey things start appearing.
I got through the first two and again, I can't help but wonder where this info is coming from. I got the Good+ ending, how could I have missed THIS MUCH INFORMATION?! hahahahha
@@616Entertainment
For the good ending, all you gotta do is find the doc in near the amusement pier and save him. and make sure that you had collected that strange red serum in the hospital section.
Saving Sibil and the rest does not matter at all
@@616Entertainment
The first and second point are basically told by that crazy cult lady to Harry after we use that pyramid thing on Alessa and when we go through Alessa's memories of her childhood.
The 3rd point is very vague yeah, but based on the hints and a few scattered notes during the nightfall sections (when the hellish imagery starts appearing). It becomes a bit clear.
Point 4 becomes somewhat obvious when we find Lisa Garland's recordings where she is crying and horrified from tending Alessa's wounds.
Point 5 is kinda obvious though. But when you will play part 3, I think it will be clear.
I never played silent hill unfortunately :/ any of them. But always wanted to. And with the price tag being so steep it discourages me from adding them to my collection.
What a legend that Mr. Beef is
ThNk you mr Beef and thank you Ian
It’s actually SHADOW OF DESTINY in the states. My bad on that but I would love for this game to get some attention. Can’t wait to see more on Silent Hill. Thank you Mr. Beef ok I’m done now. Sorry for the rant but look into it.
Jeez I've never heard of this, I'll have to look into it.
Mr. Beef is now officially a legend! (that's the good version of SH 2 as well, the HD Collection had TERRIBLE voice work)
Oh yes!! This is delightful! :)
Hey Ian, what do you think of ville valos new album?
Dude I was with you on the not knowing what the fuck was going on hahaha Silent Hill is a cool concept but fucking hell I could never follow it
The fear of blood tends to create fear for the flesh.
In my restless dreams...I see that town...Silent Hill
Aaawwwwww yeeeaaaaaa.

I love this franchise
Shouts out to Mr beef, silent Hill 2 coming next 😉? We love you too.
