BATMAN RETROSPECTIVE: The Sega Genesis/Super Nintendo Adventures of The Dark Knight.

- Premiering in September of 1992, Batman: The Animated Series quickly became THE television show for kids of my generation. The series would be adapted into video game form in multiple iterations, the best of the bunch being The Adventures of Batman & Robin. That’s one half of today’s doubleheader. On the other side of the coin, maybe it’s Two Face’s coin, is Batman Forever. This one was obviously based on the newest live action film of the time, now without Tim Burton in the director’s chair, now without Michael Keaton donning the cape and cowl. Two new treks into a digital iteration of Gotham City, a brand new generation of consoles, this was a whole new world of Batman video games to dive into. The Bat signal is shining bright, so I think it’s time to get to work.

I remember getting the "Batman Forever" video game on the Genesis for Christmas in 1995. The movie was my first Bat-film in theaters.
It did get a little repetitive, but I had a good time playing it.
The Adventures of Batman & Robin looks like it would have been an even better time, though!
No doubt.
I loved the Adventures game on Genesis. I still find myself humming the music to a few of the stages because the soundtrack was 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Man that sega Batman. I remember playing this at my friend’s house on sega channel. Just flashlights flying everywhere. Good times
The Sega Genesis version of Batman(1989) and SNES version of Batman Returns were BOMB awesome!
Well dammit I didn't cover those. lol
@@616Entertainment LOL. All good, Ian. Just your mere mentioning them inspired such memories. Salúd, my friend. Keep up the great work.
I could never understand why Robin looked so in Batman Forever in comparison to the movie.
Maaan Val Kilmer is the most underrated of Batmen out there! Such a tragedy as to what happened to him, really hope dc somewhat revives that universe into perhaps a Batman 95 universe
It's a damn shame he's suffering so much.
The adventures of Batman and Robin was one my favorite games as a kid.
As a kid I loved batman forever. Compares to all the batman games at the time.
Glad we’re finally over 100K subscribers. Criminally underrated content. Your retrospectives are top-notch, Ian. You roped me in with Halloween and I’m hoping to see you deep-dive my other favorite horror films.
These looks back on some of my favorite games has been a great placeholder!
Thanks man, highly appreciated. The History of Friday The 13th kicks off 6/16/2024.
The fact that Batman "Forever" is the THIRD movie, not the FOURTH upsets me more than it should
Thanks a lot. Now I'm mad about it, too.
No , you are absolutely right to be that upset about it, th😢 real problem is that your one of very few whom are as angered as you , and now that you made me aware of it, me , about that , fourever , of course, major missed opportunity there.
@nobel11 oh, there's more things about Batman Forever/ Batman and Robin similar to this complaint.. don't EVEN get me started!
Please explain.
@@PhilLeotardosGhost "Forever" = FOUR
Loved this one, man. I used to rent the SNES Adventures of Batman and Robin and I loved it. Even with it feeling like Batman was running against the wind and the limited moves, the atmosphere and music made up for it when I was a kid.
That Sega CD version lives on among the fandom, many people look at the cutscenes in that as almost a “lost episode” of Batman the Animated Series since there’s obviously so much effort put in. It’s really interesting.
I think I tried Batman Forever once or twice and…yeah. Didn’t like it haha.
Another really good video, I always love when you cover games I was into as a kid. And absolutely, I hope to see some Arkham videos eventually!
Covering the Arkham games would be the perfect excuse to play them again, lol. Thanks for watching, brudda.
@@616Entertainment played City and Knight within the last year. Still WELL worth your time!!
Both of these games are so incredible. Really shows that how much love they have for making this. Also the amount of work and presentation they've done. Genesis version of Batman & Robin is downright incredible, and I love that they turned it into Contra Hard Corps.
I played Batman Forever on both Sega Genesis and SNES with my Dad when I was a kid. It was a hard game.
Putting it lightly, no doubt.
my favorite thing from the animated series was always the retro future style the whole thing is set in
Awesome video, Ian thanks for making this. In the SNES Adventures of Batman and Robin while fighting the Joker, duck when the roller coaster goes upside down and Batman won't get hurt.
Shouldn't have to duck. Doesn't hurt Joker. It's cheap!
Amazing as always Ian! And absolutely agree, Kevin and Mark are the absolute icons of these roles. I still read Batman comics with their voices and always will! RIP Kevin
Icons indeed.
I really enjoyed this episode and am doing the return of the Joker one next, you actually told me a couple Bat-facts I wasn't yet aware of, so well done. And by the way,yes ,do definitely don your cape and cowl once again for the brilliant Arkham Quadrology, cuz I love Origins and Deathstroke the terminator and I will have words with any and all who disagree. But anyway nice channel dude, subbed
Thanks for watching!
I'm starting to get the feeling that throughout their lifespan, Akklam had no real ambition to be the best, to learn from their mistakes and do better. Even some of today's developers can learn from their mistakes. Man, Acclaim is really shaping to be the Vince Russo of video game developers, making many bad decisions and refusing to change course, and always trying to defend themselves at every turn. I think Acclaim was insecure but also complasint.
You should have covered the Batman Forever the Arcade game. It’s insane in all the best ways
Never played it, not the one I grew up with.
The Adventures of Batman and Robin for the Genesis looks like a Konami or Treasure game.
I loved the animated series, still do, Kevin conroy was amazing
This was a fantastic double header, Ian. You going into the Batman: Animated Series, and giving off a mini history of, it gave me chills, given how amazing that series has been for a lot of us. Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill are definitely the GOATs, and we’ll definitely miss their combined performances.
But on the real, despite some difficulties and the games’ flaws, these look fun to play, especially the Batman & Robin one. Hopefully one day, I can try it. But until then, great retrospective, Ian, and I hope you and all the DanDans have a good weekend. I love you all.😊❤️
Great video. Looking forward to the new patreon goals!
Definitely need an Arkham games retrospective! Along with finally getting a retrospective on Ready to Rumble! (WCW movie)
Very possible, we'll see with the next round of Patreon goals.
When I was in 8th grade I did a book report on the novelization of Batman Forever, and I do remember there being a mention of the Riddler being super muscular at the end and fighting Batman, but I don't recall him being called Big Riddle
Being 38 Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy are my Joker and Batman and to this day I feel robbed that The Flash Show on CW had BOTH OF THEM FOR THE CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS AND DIDNT HAVE THEM ON THE SAME SCREEN
Yeeeeeaaaaaa, missed opportunity.
I had Batman Forever the Video Game on Genesis and let's just say it was better as a arcade game than a game on consoles.
Hahaha no doubt.
This was one of the retrospectives was most eager to see as I played batman forever as a kid. A friend gave me a copy of the game so me and one of my uncles would play thru the game together at least once a week if not more. I never knew it was awful as a kid so I still get nostalgia when I heard about it even though I see why it is ass now as an adult. I also didn't know it ran on the same engine as mk2. It probably should have been obvious looking at both of them, but I barely got to play any of the mks before Deadly alliance.
Thanks for watching!
You really should have cover the PC port of Batman Forever which is much better. I had good time with it alongside with my family and friends. For start, Robin looks is exactly like in the movie.
It’s not my goal to make bad games look as good as possible. I grew up with the awful console ports, so those are the ones I covered. And funny enough, there’s a Digital Foundry video on the PC port that shows just how awful that one is, too.
I got Batman Forever from a second hand shop.... And that's the best thing I could say about it.
Hahahaha
My brother and I had both versions of B & R and we sucked at both. Batman Returns for SNES was the best pre-Arkham Batman game imo.
Always prefferd the snes version of batman & Robin because of the presentation, just felt and sounded more like the show. Batman forever got traded in after 1 playthrough 😆, begged my aunt to get it for me on Christmas
Back in the day, I found all the secrets for the Genesis version of Batman Forever.. and went on to beat the game. And mind you, didn't have a strategy guide and the Internet was not a thing, so.. Was it easy?? Not remotely. But I did have fun.
Awesome video, way worth the Patreon money, you've been killing it lately
Thanks brudda. More to come.
Nostalgia overload, lol. I still own my physical copy of Batman Forever. Got it at a Toy 'R' Us back in the day... Ah, the good ol' days.
Good times indeed.
Man, I haven't seen the Batman Forever movie in a few years, and seeing some of the old movie clips just unlocked memories from my childhood. I had the movie on VHS, I loved watching it over and over. I was sitting on a bed, looking at the screen during the opening scene, I was hooked. If I recall, I was running around the house being a brat, then my parents put the VHS, seeing it was Batman, I stopped and started watching. I was I think 3 and I'm 23 now
It was a great time to be a kid, ya know?
Great retrospective as always. I haven't had much play time with the batman and Robin but forever, I got it at launch. I did eventually track down the Playstation version which is considerably much more expensive and rare. I played forever a ton and found it very frustrating. I got to see the movie in the theater along with returns and enjoyed it at the time. I've seen some things pointing at a director's cut of the film potentially being released at some point.
☝️🙌✨️
That's all we needs is more 'ReLeAsE tHe (person) cUt' garbage, lol
@616Entertainment for me personally, I enjoy most director's cuts. Some do not do so well but I'll give you an example. Alien 3 director's cut did improve on many of the special effects from the theatrical release. They did put in a few scenes and extended others. Not the best in the series but a good improvement. Just curious, are you not a fan of different versions of film?
Lol nice subtle nod to Rick moranis, well done
Batman forever the arcade game was super good! 500 hit combos and power ups and they even used deleted scenes with the monarch bat.
Fucking LOVED that game!
Far cry from this, lol
I was never able to get past the first stage in Batmat Forever.
Batman Forever caused many tantrums when i was young because it was fucking impossible
Hahahahha
Did you ever play the PC port of Batman Forever? I’ve seen videos on RUclips of its gameplay. It has more bells and whistles and appears to play better than its console counterparts.
Man, I remember renting that Batman Forever game and taking it back to Blockbuster the next day...
I remember i bought batman forever on snes as a kid instead of renting it yep i felt like 1 pathetic loser that day
Kevin and Mark are Always my Bats and Jokes, and my Quinn too,whoo-hoooo
You are absolutely right about signature voice acting/actors. Both* still the best 100%
Iconic.
I mean with Hamill being the joker is just perfect and putting him with Conroy is just fate itself. RIP Conroy.
Mark hamill is great and its funny but at the beginning I actually didn't know that was luke...this man is just great !
While Batman Forever isn’t good I always thought the game had really good graphics at the time.
It's Batman forever
All right all right I mean I’ll give you that.
Hey,I remember when it released, and before playing it ,we ,the public, thought it looked like a surefire hit. But no...
Batman Forever the Arcade Game is way better although dangerous for people who suffer seizures.
I remember being obsessed with how it looked. The game was no good but aesthetically it was so pleasing.
I always like mark Hamill as the voice of the joker. He did a great job in the animated movie Batman killing the joker and Batman mask of the phantasm with the serious crazy laugh
Icon.
The dos version of Batman Forever is fast and fluid!!! A better port imo!!!
Batman Returns I had on the SNES and man when I tell you that it blew 7 year old me away
Everyone knows the SNES version is by FAR the best version. And this coming from a genesis kid. There’s a reason one version is regularly valued at over $100 at all times
Is that way Clayfighter 63 1/3 is expensive, too? Lol
Love the genesis soundtrack. It is one of the best on the system
Absolutely.
Kevin Conroy IS my Batman and Mark Hamill is THE Joker.
Kevin conroy rocks as batman
Please review the Batman 1989 arcade game and Batman Forever arcade game. No one talks about these.
Kevin Conroy is the definitive BATMAN and Mark Hamill the definitive Joker. No one has yet topped their performances in my eyes. Hearing their voices in the Arkham series was an absolute treat back in the day. But, funny enough, I never knew that a BTAS based video game ever existed. This is the first time I've heard of these. (To be fair, I didn't own either a Genesis or an SNES back then, so I didn't really pay much attention to games then I guess)
Edit: Thanks for this retrospective Ian! Not everyday I come across a good batman game I never played
HANDS DOWN PERIOD.
I still oftentimes read in their voices.
Batman took a buzz saw to the balls 25:39, he must have balls of steel.
I grew up through the vast majority of the ’80s and ’90s, and it’s still a mystery to this day whether or not Genesis did indeed do what Nintendidn’t.
Also, even though the TV show, from the ’60s was before my time,I’ve enjoyed it enough, that for me, there’s simply no topping Adam West, whom I’ve loved even more since he voiced _Family Guy_ ’s Mayor West of Quahog. And yeah, Caesar Romero was fucking MASTERFUL as the ORIGINAL The Joker.
Anyone who has never seen the ’60s _Batman_ show, find a way to do yourself a favor if you are fan of the franchise. You’d be doing yourself a disservice not to.
BLAST PROCESSING.
Michael Keaton will always be Batman and Jack Nicholson will always be Joker to me but I loved Mark Hamill as the animated version of Joker...I mean that sinister laugh Hamill did. And here's something to leave you with...ARKHAM - mARK HAMill...crazy right?
All great portrayals.
Even though I'm a major Sega fanboy I gotta admit the SNES looks and plays great. Regardless, I prefer the visuals of the Genesis version so I'd recommend playing it over the SNES if it came down to one over the other.
Yea, even outside of price, the Genesis definitely has more impressive graphics here.
Kevin Conroy will always be the voice of Batman. and he has earned that. RIP. And Mark Hamill is my definitive Joker. Edit* Also ...honestly... everyone else on the cast. If I see them in the comic book I hear their voice. Especially whoever voiced Mr. Freeze....just perfect, Like Corey Burton Brainiac. Arleen Sorkin was Harley Quinn. Literally a character made for her, rip as well ;/
RIP to the lost legends.
@@616Entertainment lost ,but never forgotten.
Personally, I loved Batman Forever because it helped me get better at MK. I beat it when I was 12 and I'd say the only thing I hated was the archaic nature of the level design.
And technically, Robins uniform was in the movie. During the circus scenes, he wore thay exact outfit with exact colors.
It's not *exact.* And if they were able to match the wrong costume... why couldn't they match the right one?
I prefer the Sega version of Batman and Robin as well
Konami is still a legend, always will be
You know what I mean. They're a shell of their former selves.
Batman vs Goku. The crossover I never knew I wanted until today
batman forever for the megadrive and the super nintendo but the megadrive version was 10 times better! and it runs on the mortal kombat engine.
even the game boy yes, the game boy got some batman love. normal, return of the joker, batman the animated series, batman forever on the game boy.
adventure of batman and robin (megadrive and super nintendo) the super nintendo was made by konami game boy the animated series also. it has even the intro theme of that series.
Someone could make it fun, lol
Ian man huge DANDAN here thanks for all your efforts !!...do u take requests ?? ......if so how bout a retrospective on the original mighty morphin power ranger games please ???
Maybe on a Patreon goals list, we'll see.
@616Entertainment thankyou for replying 😊
I played a lot of Batman Forever in my Sega Nomad.
I didn't say it was good I said I played it a lot. Anyway I didn't make it very far into the game because I could never figure out the trick to getting up. I don't think I would have in a million years. As a kid you kind of tend to think devs wouldn't just make a game so unintuitive you couldnt eventually figure it out. Hell I even had a glitched Copy of Earth Worm Jim 2 where the final boss never appeared so the stage was softlocked. But with Batman Forever...you could just kinda tell it wasn't very good and they didn't care too much about it.
Hahahahha
Yes that would be cool. Thanks
What?
@@616Entertainment to cover Batman Arkham series.
Played that game in the past such a fun game. Return to Arkham is great.
The characters and how they are perceived by the artists are in my opinion some of the best.cheers
Have you ever thought about getting a Sega Genesis HDMI cable by hyperkin upscales the RGB in it from what I was told and it makes it look better
I've wanted to by the Analogue Mega SG. Top of the line Sega Genesis clone with HDMI. They're just expensive and very hard to find.
@@616Entertainment to true man to true
Omg Batman Forever, the platforming, beat’em up with the MK controls lol that was frustrating as all hell.
Yeah but at least you didn't have to press a button to simply turn around. Im talking about you, MK Mythologies.
@@KootenaiKing omg, the worst lol
Ah memories with Batman Forever, I play this game a few times and its frustrating to play but I enjoyed for some reason.
Thanks for the video and yes please for Batman Arkham
Arkham might be a Patreon goal, we'll see.
My strongest memory of Forever was with some cousin of mine that I only saw the one time- we went to his house for an awesome meal and then a movie or two that we had just rented.
The movie was a military-style flick that had me literally weeping within ten minutes because of all the F-Bombs (I was 10 or so but I swear it was 1.5 per sentence) So we went back and got Batman Forever instead. I had seen it before and don't think I've seen it since.
No I've not played any of the three* games
Hahahahhahaha that's so vivid.
Was big riddler the inspiration for titan joker??
Like I said, I can't find any actual evidence that 'Big Riddle' even exists. Just a claim on Wikipedia. I went through several working scripts. None of them include a fight between Batman and a muscled up Riddler.
Kevin Conroy will always be my Batman. Not only was he the best at playing both Bruce and Batman, but the animated series Batman was compassionate. The definitive version of the caped crusader. RIP to the legend.
And yes, Mark Hamill is the best Joker right next to Heath Ledger.
Genesis Batman was more fun until you died but the SNES version was a way better Batman game. SNES was paced more like the show where Batman would only take out a few thugs and the supervillain near the end of the episode, using his cunning to overcome obstacles. Genesis you just spam baterangs the ENTIRE game 😂
Yea the run and gun style is definitely a departure.
I also like the Batman Forever movie. It was silly and neon tinged but it had a certain charm to it. The game however...not so much.
Agreed.
I love Batman Forever The Arcade Game is better then Batman Forever The Movie Game for SNES ,Genesis, PS1
No doubt.
To the batmobile let's go
i still play batman returns till this very day
Great game.
Ahhh hell yeah. Thumbs up.
Thanks for watching.
Man i never got to play these , i never owned SNES Nor a Genesis just NES
U should review the hulk games if love to hear ur opinion on the one u showed earlier
Maybe some day. I don't have much experience with them.
Batman could beat Roman Reigns without prep time
Yes.
As a kid I loved Batman Forever the movie and game the SNES version. The battle room mode in the Batcave playing as the goons against friends or cpu was fun.
The super Nintendo adventures of batman and Robin se and level roller coaster with the joker was fucking impossible. Game was beautiful as well. A shame u need codes to see the rest of the game or I'm just stupid lol. Cool that thisbwas unlocked
That fight took me many tries, it's not just you. There's a reason I spent time on the difficulty.
@616Entertainment bro its unfathomable. I own the game still til this day never beat it. I want to love the game because it's smooth and the mechanics/sprites are great but that lv should've been last lol
Batman forever is one of the best Batman movies IMHO. I played Batman forever on the PC with my brother back in the day, and it was Awesome, especially for MK2 fans. Recently I gave it a try on my Xbox Series X (Dev mode with RetroArch), I played again with my brother and my nephews, and ... it is still a blast!
Unbelievable comment.
Hope this will convince you :)
i.ibb.co/TgnJnjC/20240526-182726.jpg
I haven't played Batman Forever but I have no desire to do so. It looks jank as all hell.
I haven't really played the Adventures of Batman & Robin, both versions, but they look good. I'm guessing the reason why the Genesis version is so difficult is so kids don't beat it within a rental period.
*extremely* jank.
Batman Forever was entertaining at the time with the graphics. I remember buying it at Target on SNES. Could never beat the game though but had a blast playing with my younger brother.
I’m with you on Batman Forever the movie. I enjoyed it. Bit of a guilty pleasure. The video game is ass. I couldn’t get pass the first stage of the bank heist. I played The adventures of Batman and Robin on the Sega. Beautiful graphics yet hard as hell and the animated series is an all time GOAT cartoon.
Hahahahaha
So this is my theory. I in no way have any proof of this being the truth but it’s been my theory Forever. See what I did there?
Anyway I’m Batman Forever Riddler is stealing brain power to increase the size of his brain and my theory of big riddle is that in the script it likely mentions Riddler growing meaning his brain but these lying developers who proved they aren’t that bright likely misinterpreted the script thinking Riddler would grow like Bane and be stronger.
I mean I went through several scripts, I don't even see anything like that in there. Not to mention, it is claimed that there is specifically a FIGHT between Batman and the mega Riddler. So there's definitely something fishy going on.
Now i wanna see Batman in Silent Hill. That would be a good story.
We had Batman Forever for the Genesis and that Sega CD Batman game as well. I sucked at both and never really liked either of them even though played them a lot. Is it bad I feel like Batman would have the most trouble beating Roman Reigns? He'd be about to win and then get screwed by the Bloodline before eating a spear.
Bloodline would job like 6 Disco Infernos to Batman. JABRONIS.
You know I'd rather watch 6 Disco Infernos take on Batman than the Bloodline. Side note, one of the best parts of WCW/nWo Revenge is playing as Disco Inferno and spamming his turnbuckle taunt.
For me, The Adventures of Batman & Robin for SNES is easily in top 10 Batman games of all time. Meanwhile Batman Forever: The Video game is TRASH, but Batman Forever: The Arcade Game is much, much better, especially if you have someone to play with.
Trash indeed.
That’s why acclaim is defunct because of dumb decisions like that
Well, amongst many, many others, lol
For sure they made some good games but not enough to still be around today!
I really like this game, it’s awesome. An MK-like beatem up featuring Batman and Robin? Give me more!!!
I was wondering how you were gonna tackle this. It was really informative and entertaining. The link between the guy at Acclaim making 1 subpar super hero game and 2 shitty super hero games made a lot of sense as to why those games ended up the way they did.
Hahahahaha
I actually like this game haha
