  • In October of 2001, Grand Theft Auto III took the video game world by storm. Nobody had ever seen anything like the wide open, sprawling metropolis that was Liberty City. How the hell were developer Rockstar North supposed to top this? What could they possibly do to make the next game bigger and better? Well, they didn’t have very long to figure it out. Another Grand Theft Auto game was scheduled to hit store shelves just one year after GTA III, which is unbelievable in hindsight, I can’t imagine how it felt in the moment. Today, we dive deep into the music, the missions, the blood and beyond. This is Six Stars in Vice City: A Grand Theft Auto Retrospective.

Would you ever consider covering the kingdom hearts games? At least the first one the story gets stupid and square just wouldn't stick to one hand-held after but please at least the first one. It's so good and simple and clean by utada is easily the best video game song ever made. I had it on repeat yesterday for like 2 hours and I'm a metal guy so my wife was very confused about me playing Jpop for two hours.

A core gaming memory for me is being 8 years old at my cousin’s house playing Vice City, knowing very well that my mom wouldn’t let me play those games, and having her walk into the room as I was shooting people and walking up to a pill icon to refill my health… She IMMEDIATELY took me home to ground me. But my aunt was a real one, and she made sure to let me know that the next time I came to her house to stay with my cousin she would make sure to let me know if my mom showed up so I could shut the game off 😂 Simpler times man.

I played this religious as someone who was 19 when it came out. I always listened to the 80s pop channel. Fast forward a couple of years and I was sat in a pub with a friend and 99 Luftballons by Nena came on the Jukebox. I was singing along and my friend was like 'You know all the words to this?' I nodded and then he said 'This isn't even in English!' Such is the power of the soundtrack.

Great video, bro! Nice work! The music, the stylized ambiance, the missions, the voice acting... everything about Vice City at the time screamed Best Game Ever! The fact that they were able to design and map out a whole new city, bang out a fantastic script, and make as many alterations and improvements to the original game as they did, all in less than a year, is truly astounding. Groundbreaking in every sense of the word. And oh yeah, the cops in this game are so brutal! Lol
I also feel that out of the PS2 era GTA trilogy, VC has the tightest, most concise and logical storyline, almost everything you do in missions pushes the story along, whereas in GTAIII and San Andreas there are tons of missions you need to do to advance the game but have nothing to do with the main storyline, so it can sometimes feel like you're wasting time. There are very few missions in VC like that, and that's a big reason it is still my all-time favorite GTA game of the entire series.

    • @616Entertainment
      @616Entertainment  5 месяцев назад

I feel like the story is still kinda background, but it's definitely tighter than III, no doubt.

I was 21 when Vice City came out. I was blown away by GTA III... and then subsequently by the commercials for V.C... so I was there at launch to buy that bad boy.
I always read the manual for a good 20-30 minutes before I actually start playing... at least back when games came with them... and GTA had the BEST... Anyway, I made my way to the back few pages, and started reading the track list for the radio stations... slowly realizing that it was literally the soundtrack to my childhood in the 1980's. I had read about Phil Collins playing a role in the game... but I never imagined how incredibly epic the soundtrack would be... especially after the largely forgettable (with the exception of "Game Radio") soundtrack in GTA III. I not only knew every song on the V.C. soundtrack... I knew the words to 95% of them, and could sing along! THAT'S where the nostalgia kicked in for me. In fact, it still does every time I put that old-ass disc into my old-ass PS2.
Still my favorite GTA game... by far. It may not have as much to do in the world as S.A. has, or as many vehicles, weapons, etc... but the atmosphere, setting, story, aesthetics, and personality all more than make up for that.
My ONLY gripe was (and still is) the fact that you can't freely control the camera with the right stick.
Great retrospective, Ian. Can't wait for you to cover San Andreas. Looking very forward to the Tony Hawk games, too!
Have you ever considered doing the "DOOM" series?

I actually had to borrow it from a friend and play it in secret as my parents didn’t let me buy rated M games as a youngster. Ray Liotta is a legend and after his passing it made this game that much more precious. By the way Ray was also one of the best characters of all time in black ops zombies. I used to play it all day long in my high school days, I used to think "f*ck homework I'mma play VC" and in my weekends oh boiii the hours and hours of fun. In 2013 I was in love with a girl and I associated "Waiting for a Girl Like You" from Foreigner with her but it wasn't corresponded. And then that same year I was diagnosed with cancer, went under the knife and this game was there for me. So many memories whenever I hear the intro theme.

Every game store that I called was sold out but my stepdad had to go to Future shop for a remote and when I asked the worker if they had it he looked and said “I’ve been waiting all day for someone to ask that” and he unlocked the box full of them and boy was I hyped up to play it. Vice City was the first GTA game I ever played. I still play it to this day. Once I hit 100% completion I erase the save file and start over. I even have the full loops of all the stations (commercials and all) downloaded on my computer. Might sound blasphemous but my favorite station is VCPR. I love the Pressing The Issue loops.

Vice city was my first intro to metal music, 80s aesthetics, dark humor and was one of the first mature games I was allowed to play. This game is so nostalgic to me and I wasn’t even on my parents minds in the 80s. It’s a perfect game and it’s always gonna be in my top five faves

It’s funny in 2024, how much something often overlooked gets praised, and fans begged for a return, when GTA: Vice City since I was a child, always had the unfortunate fate, of being developed along side GTA: San Andreas, and being overlooked as a result, nobody wanted to play the GTA 3 in Florida game, unless San Andreas wasn’t available, so for people for years to say “Go back to Vice City,” it’s funny as hell, as after GTA IV, we were begging Rockstar to “Go back to San Andreas,” and VC was an afterthought.
Personally the worst thing about VC, was the ever prominent question of “Why make a game set beach front, and you can’t swim,” something they sought to change in Vice City Stories, which is probably why I played that game more, as at least if I’m on a motorcycle and wipe out, I’m not going drown immediately if I go into the ocean lol.

The driving in vice city is actually really fun except the game doesn’t really teach you shit. It took me years to realize breaking with R1 makes it a whole lot easier to drift. Also every car handles way different so I try to stick to the same 3-4 cars. (Banshee, comet, stinger, deluxo)

I freaking love Vice City (and Vice City Stories), only 2 things I hate about it is that: 1 - swimming seems to still be locked only in the anniversary edition on mobile which can't be fully completed due to a bug and 2 - Dunno if it's the same on Steam and Xbox/PS, but on Nintendo's eShop you can't buy Vice City individually, which I would prefer more as it's my favorite (would also get San Andreas too) outside those 2 things can't say anything bad about Vice City

My friends were the one that I got into GTA, Vice City is the first GTA I saw, one of them wanted me to watch that bike moment which we both laughed, I truly like the katana in this one rather than in SA, because in VC, we can instantly kill peds by stabbing them at the stomach and hold to charge attack them while running. Rockstar had a hard time to have Ray to voiced Tommy because he was furious about when they came to his house and didn't take this seriously, even some people noticed it by watching watching those clips were the Voice Actors where having fun voicing their characters while Ray wasn't in any of it.
