Sunsoft are the true heroes for Batman, they really cared, the rocksteady games are also top notch, City is my fav. I wonder if a company like wayforward got their hands on the IP and made a modern day 2D Batman game, I think it could be really good, like the recent turtle games or sonic mania, I'd love to see a new 2D Batman game.
Yooo I love Rise of Sin Tzu! Lol used to play it on the GameCube all the time back in the day. Still fun to this day. I especially like playing as different characters. I used to play it with my brother and uncle all the time lol
In Return of The Joker NES you missed a few strategies while playing: - You could slide under fire to escape or attack. - If you hold the fire button you can charge the shot for the loaded weapon, with different effects. - And if you shoot the power ups when they fall you can cycle through the different weapons to pick the most convenient.
I couldn't play the NES version without a Game Genie. Too freakin' hard. Arkham Asylum was cool, but I think Arkham City was my favorite. They did good with the Catwoman character too. Lots of suit variety to keep gameplay fresh as well.
I know it's really bad but I have a soft spot for Batman Forever on the Genesis. I had about 8 other games, so it wasn't a case of take what you can get. I just had fun with all the gadgets. I got to the 2nd form Riddler but never beat it
I had played Batman Forever on Genesis and really have a good memory about it. Graphics, atmosphere, a lot of moves. Good graphics for Riddler. But now, I can’t say as I didn’t collect it for bad reviews
Batman for the NES, was a great value. I bought it at a clearance price of $19.99/w my $5 off coupon. The coupon was directly from Nintendo, because they were accused of price fixing.
I'm surprised this episode wasn't created much sooner in the life of your channel :). I absolutely adore the character Batman. Games like Batman Returns (SNES), Batman (NES), and the Batman Arkham games are among the best games ever in my opinion. While everyone has been excited for the latest Spiderman release I've broken out the Arkham games and have been heavily enjoying my time with those.
For everything said against Batman Forever: The Arcade Game, when my best friend visits, we often play it, soak in the cheese and have a great time. We don't know what the hell's going on, bosses strip our life bars away in a single combo and we rarely get to the end before running out of continues, yet we still have a smile on our faces the entire time. That alone makes it one of my favourite Batman games, even if it's lacking in a lot of areas.
I know it's a little janky, but I really enjoyed Batman: Vengeance on PS2/Xbox. It's based on the latter seasons of the 90's animated series, with the redrawn Joker with the beady black eyes. There's even a level where you're in the batwing flying through Gotham after it's been frozen by Mr. Freeze.
Though I enjoyed playing it, what annoyed me most about the Batman Beyond game is that it had no save feature or password system except for the game boy version, so if you lost, you had to start all over again.
The Atari Lynx Batman Returns has the same SFX like Gates of Zendocon on the same system. Altrough I'm not a Batman fan, my favourite Batman game is Batman Returns on SNES, I like fighting games and brawlers. It also looks the best (16bit) imo.
Maybe it's happy coincidence that I just finished uploading my playthrough of Batman: The Video Game before stumbling onto this but Batman focused video by SLX is just what I needed as a nice nightcap. I must say that it's also happy coincidence or maybe it's fate that the best Batman games are the ones with Michael Keaton and Kevin Conroy (R.I.P.) which many would argue are the best to portray Batman in their respective media. I wonder if SLX has played Gotham Knights. I don't think it got good reviews but from what little I've seen of it the game looks similar to the excellent Arkham games.
When you said (about NES Batman) "one thing you will notice right off the bat..." i fully expected to hear: "Batman is purple for some reason" Also, my brother owned Batman Returns on the Lynx. I played that game so much, but it was so hard, we never got past stage 2. The constant enemies throwing explosives everywhere and the cheap hits drove us crazy. I had no idea there were only 4 stages. That's why they made it so hard. Lazy, cheap bastards.
I grew up absolutely dirt poor so all i ever had was envy for the kids that had all these game systems and games... your channel is like nostalgia for a childhood i didn't have. Thanks.
Man, as a kid I thought it was impossible to make a bad Batman game. How could you F up being a badass with tons of tools a cool car and being the world's best detective. Yet as we all know life found a way.
I humbly request that you make a video using this same concept but for Ghostbusters video games. Pretty please? Thanks for all the consistently great content, SLX! :)
For anyone who has kids, I'd throw in the original Lego Batman into the mix. Such a fun game of exploring, puzzles and akin to the simplicity of a beat em' up
Like I said in the opening, driving games were not considered. If I have to rate that game based on the side scroller, it gets knocked down significantly.
I played a beta version of Batman and Robin at E3 way back in the day. I still remember that to simply throw a punch, it was some kind of Mortal Kombat special move (down, forward, forward and X, I think). It was an ambitious game, but they didn't think about the controls. I'm still a huge fan of the Sega CD Batman Returns. Love the soundtrack.
All these years later, I still can't get the Batman Forever's bashing tradition. I personally liked it a lot back in the 90s, and still like it today. It was like a Mortal Kombat with actual adventures and exploration, which is what I always wanted it to be (like Sub Zero Mythologies eventually did). Sure it does have its share of nasty quirks, but there was plenty more way worse games than this one. Not a gem, sure, I would rate it 6/10, it is just not that awful as everyone after AVGN trying to put it.
I remember playing the original Batman game on the GameBoy and absolutely loving it! It was such an underrated action title for the system! It is a shame Return of the Joker on the Genesis didn't get the same development treatment as the NES version! I also wish Konami had developed a '90s arcade Batman beat-em-up for the arcades. They were well-known for their quality beat-em-ups and I could see it being like an even better version of Batman Returns on the SNES with added co-op and other enhancements.
Konami got ahold of the Batman Returns license on the Nintendo console systems (even though they never released a Game Boy game, who knows what happened there) and a couple of computer platforms, more especifically the PC (with a graphic adventure) and the Amiga (with a sidescroller), so it seems logical they may have pursued an arcade game but maybe some license issues prevented this to happen (maybe the fact that Atari Games had the license for the previous movie arcade and may have had some kind of preference of doing the sequel; coincidentially, the non-related Atari Corporation made a Batman Returns game for their Lynx). They probably would have get rights for at least a Mega Drive game, since they were starting to get interest on the system, but maybe that conflicted with Sega getting the license for all their systems, including the Master System and Game Gear, which were not under the interest of Konami. This was probably some kind of licensing wars going on.
I had the Batman cart for the Amstrad 6128 plus! I actually enjoyed it and it had some cool car sections where you mad sharp turns. But there was a level where you had to mix chemicals and my 12 year old self couldn’t figure this out…!
I loved both "Batman: The Brave And The Bold" for DS and "Batman Begins" for the PS2! I still play "Batman Begins" pretty often. The graphics are pretty cool for that game and the game play isn't bad either!
Great video as always, love your channel! Batman (NES, GB) & Batman Returns (SNES) were the batman games i grew up with and loved. Wish i had the Genesis Batman, will have to track that down! I also really liked Batman Returns for PC (detective adventure game) and Batman Returns for Game Gear (surprisingly good).
Batman Dark Tomorrow was actually developed by Hot Gen Studios (Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, Star Wars: Jedi Power Battles). They, in a way, redeemed themselves a bit as they also developed the 2D action platformer Plug N Play based on the 2004 The Batman cartoon, and that was actually pretty decent overall. As for Batman & Robin on PS1? I really have to give developer Probe Entertainment (X-Men Children Of The Atom, Die Hard Trilogy) props for this game. Yes it's based on the AWFUL Batman and Robin movie and yes it came out about a year after the film hit theaters BUT, in all seriousness, they legitimately put 100% REAL EFFORT into this game to not only try to make it a good movie based game but just a good Batman game in general. They went VERY ambitious with it and it definitely shows, even though the end product couldn't fully match their ambition. Think about it. It was the year 1998 and this is a 3rd person open world (yes OPEN WORLD) Batman game where you have a fully explorable Batcave, you had numerous vehicles to drive in the Batmobile, Batsled, Robincycle, etc (equipped with their own weapons) around Gotham City and get in and out of them and stop crimes being committed at anytime, you had to find and pick up clues and actually decipher them to find out where Freeze and Ivy would turn up and strike next, you can play with Batman, Robin and Batgirl each with their own specific attributes, moves and animations, you had a good amount of bat gadgets to use, it had a day and night system/cycle where things would happen at random times, etc. When you take a step back you realize that they really went all in on this title, and again, I absolutely have to commend Probe for it. To go this all out on a movie based game, and a movie that is/was WIDELY despised, is truly praiseworthy. The thing is though is unfortunately the final product is very rough around the edges, the camera can be a real pain, the game is VERY DARK (crank up the brightness when playing this one), and the hand to hand combat isn't great. If Probe would have taken some more time with it and iron everything out it would have been one of the very best Batman games to have ever come out. The Arkham Asylum of its day. Yes, I'm not even joking. Or if it had come out on more powerful hardware that could have handled all the mechanics and aspects of it like say the Dreamcast...ugh, what a missed opportunity.
What a pleasant surprise. Today I played for the first time Batman Arkham Asylum. Great game. The ones from Sunsoft have a special place in my heart. Cheers!
@@Gatorade69 Very well, said. That's the exact reason why I don't play. Zelda tears of the Kingdom Or even breath of the wild. Way too big. Too much time
@@Al8lack As far as I know the game was released in 1986 on Amstrad CPC (cassette and disk versions), ZX Spectrum and MSX, the Amstrad version is the better looking one.
Actually, there are three sequels of the Arkham Series! After Asylum came City than Origns and finally Arkham Knight! But I won't complain because I really love your channel. I'm 42 years old and i still have every Sega console from Master System to Dreamcast. Except the Game Gear because Ii was more the Game Boy type! However, watching your channel is like back to the future! Had a lot of nice memories watching your Videos! Really love it! Awesome work! Keep on going! (apologies for my english! It's a bit awkward😅)
I love Batman, and I love me some Batman games. Looking at these library of games, just clearly shows that how our favorite Caped Crusader has received so many licensed games over the past 30 yrs then the rest of the DC heroes.
The ultimate 16-bit Batman would be combining the beat em up stages from the SNES with the driving levels from the Sega CD. Today with emulation it'd be possible to remix the games to do this. Also, Arkham Asylum had 3 sequels. You forgot Arkham Origins.
Man, thank you so much for putting these videos out. You got me through a dark time, you’re videos just kept me distracted and and my mind elsewhere. Thank you Sega Lord X 🙏
I remember in a video game group, I mentioned how many good Batman games there were out there. Some knucklehead swore that there were no good Batman games until Arkham Asylum came out. So I asked, "Does that mean that the NES Batman games, the Adventures of Batman & Robin, and the various versions of Batman Returns were all bad?" He had the nerve to say that they were "unplayable". I said, "You know what? That's your opinion, but it doesn't mean that they are bad. My opinion is that Pokemon is overrated, but that doesn't make it a bad franchise." Apparently, I hit such a sour note with him that he went on a two-paragraph tirade that I didn't even bother to read, I just responded with a laugh emoji. No one can tell me that the Ninja Gaiden-styled Batman games are "bad"; those are some damn good games.
imagine in the office of McFarlane Toys, there is a staffer who just watched this video and starts designing a limited edition "Batman from Batman and Robin PS1 Game" figure... what a pixelated polygon mess it would be...
I do love a good Batman game. Ocean Software (UK Publisher/developer) did three different Batman games for the UK market - the first (simply known as Batman) was a bizzare isometric platform puzzler released in 1986 for the ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC computeters. It was later ported to the Japanese MSX. Very odd- but historically important as it was the very first Batman game for any platform. It was later remade for Windows, which you can find free on the web. Ocean's 2nd effort was Batman: The Caped Crusader which came out on various computer platforms. This time, it was much more faithful to the comic books, and had two distinct adventures - one against the Joker and one against the Penguin. Ocean finally knocked it out of the park with their3rd Batman title - Batman the Movie. This followed a similar structure to their previous RoboCop game from the year before, with different scenes making up different levels. Level One is a Side-scrolling platforming level, with Batman making his way through Axis Chemicals to stop Jack Napier, who becomes the Joker. Level Two is the escape from the Muesum via the Batmobile. On 8-bit machines, this was done via a side-scrolling slightly isometric view, but on the more powerful 16-bit machines, it was presented as a fast Outrun-style race. Level three was a puzzle, as Batman works out what products make up Smilex Gas, and then your're behind the controls of the Batwing for Level Four, in the same way as the Batmobile level. And finally for Level Five, Batman has to make his way up Gotham Cathederal to stop the Joker, in another side scolling platformer. It's incredibly primitive gameplay compared to the Sunsoft adaption, but it sold massively, not least because it was included as a pack-in with the mighty Commodore Amiga 500, which had the best version of the game. I still enjoy it.
What a great video and a great idea! A bit late but i'll add my two cents in: I'm surprised one of the greatest Batman games was not mentioned here ''Batman Returns'' for the Sega Master System. That was the only Batman game I had growing up as I only had a Master System in those early years. That game was developed by Aspect and had music by Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima from SOR fame. It was better than the Game Gear port on account of the levels being much larger to explore and the route select branching system gave the game more replay value for it's time. I would have to agree with you SLX when talking about the Mega Drive/Genesis Batman games. Batman 1991 by Sunsoft really is the best one! The Adventures Of Batman & Robin is a beautiful looking game but I refuse to play it without game genie invincible cheats, i'm too old now to learn the game's mechanics and strengths and weaknesses by replaying it over and over getting endless game overs, I work hard, come home and want a quick 1 hour invincible thrill ride through this game before I go to bed. The problem with Batman Forever is that it starts getting a little repetitive and boring after a while as all you do is beat up bad guys and walk around. I can't really comment on the Arkham Batman games as they came out later in time on consoles I do not own or care for.
The C-64 "Batman - The Movie" game was quite good within the limitations of the system. The grappling-hook-and-batarang platforming gave players a fair amount of movement freedom, and there was variety between platformer, vehicle, and puzzle levels. The music was also excellent.
I really enjoyed this episode, hopefully you make a follow up with some other Batman ganes like Batman for the PC Engine, Batman Begins, Batman Vengeance (Gamecube+GBA), Batman Rise of Sin Tzu, Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate, Batman Telltale, etc and maybe do a list of Spider-Man games, Ironman, Duperman, The Hulk, etc.
I remember how hard some of these Batman games were especially the nes game and tge adventures of Batman and robin for the mega drive I’d be interested to see if they will ever make a Batman retro collection with all the old Batman games but somehow I doubt it

The Animated Series one on the SNES looked great and the motion was phenomenal.
Adventures of Batman and Robin on Genesis and Rise of Sin Tzu are pretty good. And, honestly, I enjoyed Batman Forever Arcade.
Everyone hated on Sin Tzu 😂, me & my buddy enjoyed playing as the animated series season 4 team. Very simplistic though
Yooo I love Rise of Sin Tzu! Lol used to play it on the GameCube all the time back in the day. Still fun to this day. I especially like playing as different characters. I used to play it with my brother and uncle all the time lol
Yeah Rise of Sin Tzu has a pretty cool combo linking system + alternate skins for the 4 playable characters 👍
Sin Tzu was hard as hell but if you had a buddy it was loads of fun.
Batman forever arcade is great. That’s what an arcade batman should feel
Like not a console game
In Return of The Joker NES you missed a few strategies while playing:
- You could slide under fire to escape or attack.
- If you hold the fire button you can charge the shot for the loaded weapon, with different effects.
- And if you shoot the power ups when they fall you can cycle through the different weapons to pick the most convenient.
gotta mention Batman Begins on Xbox.
it was list Splinter Cell, but with batman.
based on the first Christian Bale Batman movie.
I couldn't play the NES version without a Game Genie. Too freakin' hard. Arkham Asylum was cool, but I think Arkham City was my favorite. They did good with the Catwoman character too. Lots of suit variety to keep gameplay fresh as well.
Remember the NES one was amazing for its time but the enemys re-spawned anytime you moved too far and it was annoying
27:51 what music is that?
I only had "Batman Forever" and "The Adventure of Batman and Robins" on genesis. I finished both of them when I was a kid.
I know it's really bad but I have a soft spot for Batman Forever on the Genesis. I had about 8 other games, so it wasn't a case of take what you can get. I just had fun with all the gadgets. I got to the 2nd form Riddler but never beat it
yeah, i'm the same there, had the controls not been so cryptic, that game could've been a hit.
Great video as always! One Batman game that gets overlooked is Batman: Vengeance. It wasn't bad
Freeze.
Yeah man the game wasn’t bad had it for GameCube.
@@TheMja0303 Oh yeah, I forgot it was on GameCube too. There was a GBA version that was decent as well, it's a sidescroller.
Great game
When you said (about NES Batman) "one thing you will notice right off the bat..." i fully expected to hear: "Batman is purple for some reason"
Also, my brother owned Batman Returns on the Lynx.
Thanks.
What was the game with the Batmobile from the animated series?
The Adventures of Batman and Robin for the Sega CD
@@takkoy8658 Thank you so much.
Man, as a kid I thought it was impossible to make a bad Batman game. How could you F up being a badass with tons of tools a cool car and being the world's best detective.
Yet as we all know life found a way.
Game devs didn't know how batman
Worked.😂
Excellent video, man. Batman on NES is such a great game. Hearing the music does exactly what you said it does: make my hair stand up. Chills!
A *major* flaw with the Konami games was the steep AF difficulty curve 😬🥵
that's Konami for you. lol
I humbly request that you make a video using this same concept but for Ghostbusters video games. Pretty please? Thanks for all the consistently great content, SLX! :)
For anyone who has kids, I'd throw in the original Lego Batman into the mix. Such a fun game of exploring, puzzles and akin to the simplicity of a beat em' up
Batman Forever the Arcade Game is fun as hell though
I can't believe that you didn't cover Batman Returns on the Mega-CD?
Like I said in the opening, driving games were not considered. If I have to rate that game based on the side scroller, it gets knocked down significantly.
I played a beta version of Batman and Robin at E3 way back in the day. I still remember that to simply throw a punch, it was some kind of Mortal Kombat special move (down, forward, forward and X, I think). It was an ambitious game, but they didn't think about the controls.
I'm still a huge fan of the Sega CD Batman Returns. Love the soundtrack.
Thanks Sega Lord X.Really like the reviews 😊😊
Whats the music at 26:33?
It's from Batman Returns Sega CD OST.
I loved both "Batman: The Brave And The Bold" for DS and "Batman Begins" for the PS2! I still play "Batman Begins" pretty often. The graphics are pretty cool for that game and the game play isn't bad either!
Great video!
The music you use in credits is Wicked Child?
Great video! Batman Brave and the Bold for Wii is a must play. I would put it neck and neck or above the Snes version.
❤❤❤❤ I like the old-school Batman games
No honorable mention of Batman returns on the master system?
Cheers!
You definitely have to try Arkham city for sure. It is way better. bigger
@@timculhane625Bigger isn't necessarily better. I mean it's a great game but for someone who doesn't have a lot of free time it's a bit too big.
@@Gatorade69 Very well, said. That's the exact reason why I don't play.
Zelda tears of the Kingdom Or even breath of the wild. Way too big. Too much time
If Batman had a very stiff walk in the Genesis and Nes, his Lynx walking animation is pure Looney Tunes.
The Adventures of Batman and Robin on the Genesis is my childhood
Really liked the original Batman on NES 😊😊
I feel like I’ve been waiting this whole time for you to do this episode.
One Batman game worth checking is the 1986 Ocean software Amstrad CPC version, it uses an isometric 3D perspective like Solstice on the NES.
I was going to mention the same game, but for the ZX Spectrum. I think it came out around 1986 or maybe '87, and was based on the 60s TV show.
We all choose to forget Arkham Origins...
@@svenvaltik5657 There's nothing wrong with it. It has the best boss fights and story in the series.
@@StormsparkPegasus Far from it.
I didn't include Origins as a sequel because technically it's a prequel by another studio.
I agree that Akrham Asylum was my favourite of the 3 games and still replay it from time to time
Man, thank you so much for putting these videos out.
My favorite was the NES version that you 1st mentioned and during the intro, that music was definitely iconic
What a great video and a great idea! A bit late but i'll add my two cents in:
I'm surprised one of the greatest Batman games was not mentioned here ''Batman Returns'' for the Sega Master System.
I'm curious what your thoughts were on the TurboGrafx-16 Batman game.
It was ok for what it was. Not tops, not a bottom dweller.
The C-64 "Batman - The Movie" game was quite good within the limitations of the system. The grappling-hook-and-batarang platforming gave players a fair amount of movement freedom, and there was variety between platformer, vehicle, and puzzle levels. The music was also excellent.
Congrats on 150K subs, man
I really enjoyed this episode, hopefully you make a follow up with some other Batman ganes like Batman for the PC Engine, Batman Begins, Batman Vengeance (Gamecube+GBA), Batman Rise of Sin Tzu, Batman Arkham Origins Blackgate, Batman Telltale, etc and maybe do a list of Spider-Man games, Ironman, Duperman, The Hulk, etc.
I really like Batman on the PC engine.
The Amiga and Atari ST versions of the 89 film are super consistent with the film and are great games considering the hardware
The Amiga to me had the better Batmobile stage
The Amiga version was one of my favourite games on the machine.
I remember how hard some of these Batman games were especially the nes game and tge adventures of Batman and robin for the mega drive I’d be interested to see if they will ever make a Batman retro collection with all the old Batman games but somehow I doubt it
