The Life & Death of 'MotorStorm' (RETROSPECTIVE)

  • There was a time in late 2007 where MotorStorm was THE game to have for your PlayStation 3. In his official review, IGN's Jeremy Dunham labeled the game as the 'system seller' for Sony's hot, new console. Over the years, MotorStorm took many shapes. From a desert racer where anything goes in any vehicle, to a tropical paradise bursting at the seams with death defying jumps, all the way over into arctic and remote controlled handheld territory on the PSP and PS Vita. This was the baby of Evolution Studios, and for a period of several years, it looked as though the team could do no wrong.
But, you've heard the phrase: "Nothing gold can stay." MotorStorm's final entry is already 10 years old, and even worse, Evolution Studios was shut down just a few years later. What went wrong? What happened to this high octane racer that seemed destined for greatness? We'll cover all that and more. Enjoy it!

Motorstorm is my favorite game of all time, or series I should say. It shaped my childhood, I have so many memories with these games. Mainly pacific rift however. That game alone brought me and my cousins closer together, it made for some family fun race nights on those nostalgic cool summer nights. The music brought me to explore many artists and tracks. I did my first fan art for this game. So many priceless memory’s I will never forget. Hell, I still return to the game everyonce and a while. Motorstorm might seem like another racing game to some, but it’s so much more than that. The cars, the world, gameplay, sounds, and music set up the game to being, in my opinion. One of the best racers ever created. It’s original, it’s fun, it’s awesome. Sony needs to remaster this game, Lunatics Unite!

Hell yeah Motorstorm is still one of my favorite racing game experiences. I still remember playing the demo for the first game over and over before finally getting it. Man Pendulum's Slam is still on my usual tracklist whenever I'm driving and whenever that song comes on I forget that I'm on a boring highway and not in a mud plugger. I always liked the aesthetics for Pacific Rift more since it was overall a much more colorful game when it came to environments and Apocalypse was cool but honestly not my favorite looking back on it. Still a solid franchise that would benefit from a remaster. Maybe some day.

I desperately miss that mid 00s era for video games. 360/PS3 era was the peak imo. It was the first HD era for games yet they also still supported traditional local play. And the games were still meant for fun and actually tried to innovate. I feel like once Xbox one/PS4 came out, gaming really went downhill. It’s sad. I hope I’m not the only one

I missed the MotorStorm games when they were new (the 360 was my main system in that generation and by the time I got a PS3, I played other stuff like Uncharted and Metal Gear), but a while ago I managed to pick up the first two MotorStorms for basically nothing at a used book store. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten around to Pacific Rift yet, but the first game is brilliant and holds up really well today despite the relatively limited amount of content. I'm a big fan of the old Burnout and FlatOut games, so MotorStorm would've been right up my alley back in the day.
While it wasn't mentioned in the video, Codemasters' Dirt 5 was also developed by the former MotorStorm/OnRush folks, now called Codemasters Cheshire. I haven't played that one yet, but based on the gameplay I've seen there's still quite a bit of the old MotorStorm DNA in there and it seems to have been one of the best launch games for the PS5 and Xbox Series S/X back in 2020.

I tried the third installment at its launch and it wasn't for me any longer. I'm just glad that close to that time another game caught my attention and addiction, it was Blur. That's another arcade racer that had unfortunated turn of events around it that lead the studio to be shut down (Bizzare Creations, same developers from the Project Gotham Racing series). First of all, I apologize for coming to this video SUPER late. Meant to watch it a long time ago and just let it slip. But man, what a shirt you’ve got there haha.
It’s funny to hear you talking up Burnout, me and MTM have been playing Burnout Revenge lately and it’s been tons of fun. I don’t get into the racing sim games either so our tastes there are pretty similar with Mario Kart and the like. For that reason, maybe I’ll have to give Motorstorm a shot one of these days. Plus you can’t beat those mid 2000s video game butt rock soundtracks hahaha.
Some of the game modes you mentioned ended up in that Burnout game we were playing too, where the guy in last place explodes until there’s one left. Gotta love it.
“Who needs a story mode in a racing game?” I agree but I also love knowing that this came from the same guy who needed to kayfabe a team situation to keep continuity intact when drivers died in the previous game haha.
Awesome video as always, man. I can see the appeal of this franchise!

I've honestly gotta disagree with some of the criticisms leveled at Apocalypse, as it being my favorite game in the series. While I can agree that the choice of motion comic is maybe not the best route to have taken, I can appreciate that they were going for something more ambitious than just a simple racing game; to actually go for a story and characters, to make the world of Motorstorm something more than just people racing, I commend the effort. And if you go and read the collectible card descriptions they put a lot of time into creating individual character backstory and even different factions within the festival they belong to. It's something they clearly cared about and gave a lot of thought towards.
As for the destruction during races, this is honestly why it's my favorite Motorstorm. I never found overly distracting to where it made races too difficult or frustrating, and honestly it only enhanced the enjoyment I got out of them. Motorstorm is about chaotic racing, and this is the epitome of that. It makes races more skillful in how you play them, and the shifting tracks mean that races feel far more dynamic and interesting.
It's like how in Split/Second, a major power-play can completely change the track to open up a new route, or in Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed when the tracks alter so you go into a different vehicle mode. It makes races more fun and interesting to play.

Never played the PSP or Vita ones either although I can probably buy the Vita version since I do own the Vita still! Thanks for covering a Series on PS3 that actually made PS3 standout from its Lackluster Launch! BTW I’m going on 35 and remember when I got my OG PS for my 10th Birthday almost 25 Years ago this year… Smackdown Shut Your Mouth is my Personal Favorite. Until SVR, & SVR 06. I can also tell you how I got my PS3 so when the iPhone OG first came out I went to AT&T to try and get one. But you know Credit Checks and since I was starting out they wanted a $600 Down payment not even for the phone just the Down Payment I was like nah I’m good. Went to Target on the way Home and got the Fat 80GB PS3 a Copy of Resistance and the newly released Uncharted Drake’s Fortune! Man 2007 was the Year man. Got the 360 that same Year got Bioshock and Halo 3! Ahhh Great Times! The first Motor Storm is my favorite racing game of all time i LOVED it. I was in the store with my wife and seen Motor Storm Apocalypse and I had a mild argument with her because I was going to buy it right then and she wanted me to wait and read about it, I didn't listen. I wouldn't recommend Motor Storm Apocalypse for target practice, much less for someone to play as a racing game. I have never in my life been angrier over a game than I was over Motor Storm Apocalypse and I started playing games on the commodore 64, so yea been a gamer a LONG time. I'm still not sure if it was all because the game sucked so bad or because my wife was right, and I should have listened. When i was a kid i absolutely fell in love with Apocalypse. To this day it still is my favourite Motorstorm.
But I've recently been replaying Artic Edge and Pacific Rift and i finally get it why people disliked Apocalypse. The driving doesn't even feel like the older motorstorms.
Nonetheless, the graphics were mind blowing back in the day and i liked the story mode!
I really don't get why people didn't like the story mode. The comics you see between the races, HAPPENED between the races so it does make sense to see them. I get the animation argument, they were kinda weird but it feels motorstorm nonetheless. Apocalypse had canceled DLC unfortunately, because i love the concept of racing through a falling city.
Im praying for a ps5 Apocalypse reboot. Either that or remaster the entire ps3 games or just a new motorstorm game.
The question is, where would they take motorstorm next? Like what new setting would they bring? We already had deserts, ice, tropical islands and cities i have absolutely no idea where they would take it next.
