The Rise and Fall of Motorstorm

PlayStation owners throughout the PS1 and PS2 eras had no shortage of arcade and simulation racers. From first-party offerings like Gran Turismo and Wipeout to third-party endeavors such as Formula 1, Ridge Racer, and Burnout, PlayStation players regularly enjoyed their fill of high-octane action. One development house-Evolution Studios-made a name for itself by producing sim racers for the Sony-owned hardware. Evolution’s World Rally Championship, or WRC, franchise received five PS2 entries, dragging fans into off-road excursions with impressive physics and audio designed to reflect the exhilaration of the life-threatening car sport.
Evolution pumped the brakes when transitioning to PS3 development, foregoing its simulation roots in favor of the arcade-driven MotorStorm. Often likened to the carnage of Burnout, MotorStorm set a new bar for off-roading by throwing away the rulebook that many racing games had long followed. The pursuit of these ends resulted in a racer that pit vehicles of disparate types against each other, with dirt bikes fighting for control of the road versus big rigs. Evolution made sure every vehicle controlled differently and every lap around a track offered new challenges, a feat it accomplished across multiple games.
But not unlike WRC before it, MotorStorm drifted to the background when a new generation of hardware skidded onto the scene. Instead of bringing the popular PS3 series to PS4, the developers hedged their bets on Driveclub, the immersive racer where teaming up with others took precedence. Driveclub’s unfortunate failure marked Evolution’s last turn at the wheel and spelled doom for the future of the beloved MotorStorm IP.
This is the rise and fall of MotorStorm.

Terrain deformation is one of those things that should have been way bigger in todays offroad games. Just like complete destruction of environments and other things pioneered in the early 2000's, it all got put on the backburner while everyone focused on adding more pixels to everything. They chose the wrong path. I'd give anything for proper AI competition and real-time terrain deformation in a racing game. I don't need 8k HDR graphics.

Had a fantastic soundtrack on MS1 and one of the most competitive online racing. Everything about felt so raw but in a good way. Even then it was pretty refined in its car handling and had quite some easter eggs in its paint jobs and car referencing of real world cars.
The 'camper' dropping of the cliff at the end was my go to car for pacific rift. I always remember that car first as it was so weighty on its rear axle. So bonkers to drive such cars, and having numetal on the speakers. Loved it. Loved it. Loved it.

      Agreed
A shame it didn’t get any more gamemodes. It would have really benefitted with a racing mode since vehicles could all keep up with each other and it already had the system in place to allow natural catchup (such as no fodder spawning at the front). It could have involved a team points system based on individual position plus strategy to get your team across the line first.
Instead they pulled the plug and axed the team
I still play the custom game every now and then

Motorstorm was such a great game, it had that 90's soul and 2010's physics and graphics.
Thinking of 90's games like Fatal Racing/Whiplash, Demolition Racer, Destruction Derby Raw and Stunts.

been watching your videos for a while now, first videos i watched were i think the C&C documentary, or the R6 Patriots one. Both an absolute tragedy that happened to those projects. watching the documentaries for those games though was thoroughly satisfying. since then i've been keeping an eye out for new videos and was never disappointed if ever.
my hope, is that some day you get to make a video on a prior project that is making a successful comeback. like so many brands i miss these days.

I worked at Gamestop as of as an entry-level employee back in 2006 and 2008 and this the demo was amazing for this game. I think it was nirvana that was playing on the demo, but it made me want to pick up the game and me a lot of people by the game also, I can’t believe the franchise is 20 years old. I miss this series. It reminds me of simpler times please do the rise and fall Ridge racer next.❤

I wish I was a little bit earlier to witness the entire series flowed with me. I've only played MS:A but it was perfect enough to experience. Alas, it was too late for me to miss out on MS:PR which I later found even crazier than Apocalypse. It's intro officially blew my mind. Without any doubt, this franchise deserves to be exhibited in a video game museum if there's any around.

As always your content is wonderful. Absolutely love the first Motorstorm and quite like Pacific Rift too. It's got a different vibe to the bonkers first one though. Soundtrack is just as bad ass. Only played a little of Apocalypse and didn't really get on with it, but it influenced another great and over the top game called Split Second. Never played Arctic Edge. Lovely tribute indeed. I'd absolutely love of Evolution studios made a return to Motorstorm and ticked all the right boxes. Doing a Motorstorm game on PS5 would likely look exactly as awesome as the 2005/6 CGI release trailer, if not even better 😃😄
