Akin to the great musical artists and films of our time, certain video game releases have instituted a culture shift, establishing a clear demarcation line dividing the art created before its existence and after. Wolfenstein 3D earned its place among such a prestigious list, having fathered the modern first-person shooter in 1992. The 2001 launch of Grand Theft Auto 3 similarly shifted popular culture, birthing the open-world genre whose potential knows no limits. BioShock from Boston-based developer Irrational Games drew yet another indelible line in August 2007, its immersive gameplay, gripping atmosphere, and pioneering use of inventive storytelling devices elevating first-person shooters on countless fronts.
The original BioShock constituted Irrational’s attempt at bringing the hallmarks of the critically acclaimed yet commercially unimpressive System Shock to mainstream audiences. It accomplished as much by coloring outside the lines of market expectations. Over the course of the series, however, adapting to said expectations deeply affected the core of the brand.
Development woes affected all three entries as well, often driving a wedge between members of the creative team. That series creator Ken Levine was supposedly difficult to work with only exacerbated the tension. Internal and public-facing issues aside, many would argue BioShock never shied away from challenging the status quo, all while raising the bar. But for Irrational’s publisher, a contingent of fans, and even some developers, that bar could never quite reach high enough.
This is the rise and fall of BioShock.

Hey everyone, thanks for watching (and hopefully enjoying) our latest documentary about BioShock.
We wanted to clear a few things up regarding the naming convention of our Rise and Fall videos: in this series, we do not only cover franchises that have shown a marked rise and decline in popularity or quality but also franchises that have been lost to time (Skate, Max Payne and InFamous to name a few). In these cases, "Rise and Fall" doesn't necessarily represent the trajectory of quality of the games in these franchises, but more the state of these franchises themselves (for example: when they're abandoned or mishandled by their publishers, when their sequels are eternally stuck in development hell or when their developers have simply lost interest in pursuing another entry).

I have no nostalgia for these games because I played only recently, but I found Bioshock 1's level design really good. My fondest early moment was seeing the ice on some door in the first level and thinking "there must be something they give you to melt it", so I went off the beaten path to find Incinerate before I actually bothered with progressing "linearly". And of course aside from that Sander Cohen's level was just really fun to explore all around.

For some reason, I thought BioShock would be more of an RPG in a fully functioning city. Essentially, I expected the first planet in SW KOTOR. Bioshock 2 was the last game in the series that I ended up getting to, but it's easily my favorite. Despite not having any especially memorable twists like its predecessor or Infinite, I think both its overall story and gameplay end up holding up the best of the three. It wasn't mentioned in the video, but Jordan Thomas (B2's creative director) was the lead level designer for Fort Frolic, arguably the peak of Bioshock 1. I think he ended up understanding what made Bioshock great more than Ken Levine did, in the end.

Gonna get skewered for this: BioShock disappointed me. Loved System Shock 2, truly one of the all time greats and a distant immersive sim predecessor to modern games like Zelda: BotW & TotK. I salivated for two years waiting for BioShock, check the webpage day-in day-out, and buying on day one. And was left befuddled and underwhelmed that this... this thing... was the spiritual sequel to System Shock 2, a sophisticated immersive sim RPG having intentionally poor gun play, had been stripped of nearly all those "immersive sim RPG elements". Now left with nothing but poor gun play.

If you are skewered, you won't be alone in your thoughts: I had the same experience.
I still really enjoyed it - but in the exact same way you'd enjoy $20K if you'd been promised $100K.
Levine wanted to trade off complexity for popularity - and for better or worse he succeeded.
It threw away most of the stuff I love about the gameplay. If it wasn't for the story they told, I wouldn't have bothered.
And I would have missed out because I loved Bioshock 2 more than 1 and Inf combined.

I hear they are remaking System Shock for modern hardware, I'm excited to check that out as well! I did like Bioshock 2, but I've always preferred played as Jack because being in the Big Daddy armor all the time just kind of felt too bulky for me, so I always preferred the OG game over 2. I wish they brought back Bioshock 2 multipliplayer, that had no business being lowey fire; I liked Infinite as well, but it wasn't as good as 1 or 2 or any of those early trailers made it look to be..

I adore all 3 of these games, all for different reasons. I know folks sort of dunk on Infinite's gameplay, but the combat really does have its moments, typically in big set pieces when skyhook traversal is involved. I first played it back in high school, and I remember the story being unbelievably good back then. I don't really know how it's all aged, but the story of Infinite, as well as its Burial at Sea DLCs, really hit me with those bittersweet endings and realizations back when I was younger.
I don't clamor for a new BioShock game, because I think we got a good, proper ending with Infinite and Burial at Sea that will stick with me for a long time. For me, this series will always stand as one of the best examples of how to craft worlds and stories in fiction, how some stories work better when you experience them quite literally through the eyes (and sometimes even words) of specific characters, and how gaming as a medium can blend those qualities together in such a unique and special way.
