    Kind of a Dreyson hypothetical for you. If Yip Man never came to Hong Kong, do you think Wing Chun would have ever seen the light of day? Would there have been someone else to come along or was the combination of Yip Man and Bruce Lee A Million To One Chance that could never have been repeated?

    • @wingchun-simplekungfu7584
      @wingchun-simplekungfu7584 Год назад +1

      That is a great question. I’m not sure if I would have taken up martial arts if not for Bruce Lee & a need to protect myself better than I was capable . And I’m not sure if I would have trained in Wing Chun if it wasn’t for a school located near to my work. It was only when I started teaching that I was to learn my master was a student at Ip Mans school training under Chu Shong Tin. I knew who Bruce Lee was but all of the connections to Ip Man and Bruce to that point were pure coincidence and on reflection, great luck .

    • @0352usmc1

      As far as if Wing chun would have seen the light of day, there were already other lineages of Wing Chun out there. Kwok Wan Ping of the Yuen Kay San lineage was in Hong Kong in the 50s and 60s. His sifu Sum Nung was spreading the art in Guangzhou, China but Yip Man definitely popularized the art and taught alot of students who then took the art to the west. The other Wing chun sifus out there were not as well known or just kept a more low profile in Hong Kong. The Bruce lee angle is very important. While these other Sifus had students who also brought the art to the west, they did not have the reach that Bruce lee had so their teachings stayed local to wherever they immigrated to. Who else would have come along without the Yip Man/Bruce lee combination to then popularized the art, is a very good question in mental gymnastics.

    Great episode. Something to consider vis-a-vis Yip Man’s (at the time) “unusual” idea of teaching in multiple locations might be his history & experience regarding his wealthy background; his family owned multiple businesses, in multiple regions, & it’s not a stretch to consider that a) some of those businesses might have been related (ie laundromats in multiple locations) and b) he may have, through home teaching or osmosis, picked up on the “multiple location business model”.
    Will there be a part 3?

    Hello dear Sifu, love your show for all the incredible range of information, for the gentle informality and for your impeccable deportment. Having studied with Sifu Moy Yat where yum cha was encouraged as an important aspect of one’s development, privy to the stories and discussion for awhile. One discussion was just this issue of why did Yip Man not admit westerners to hIs class. The explanation Sifu Moy Yat gave was that Yip Man felt that westerners had taken everything else from the Chinese land, so he was going to keep Ving Tsun for the Chinese.

      Not just Yip Man didn't want to teach westerners, a lot of sifu's from older generation do not want to teach westerners. They believe and they know westerners are bigger, taller and stronger than Chinese. If westerners learn real kung fu, there is no way Chinese can beat them.
