    Great video as always, i recommmand for every martial art "fan", following you guys for quite some time on youtube or podcast, I particularly appreciate the educational approach to making martial arts known and understood with honesty not avoiding criticism from the academic side. Although we can be both, many confuse fighter and martial artist, thanks to your channel, I hope many can discern the different facets of this art. Keep up the joy for sharing the knowledge and the good work.

    When I got into Wing Chun and started reading all the stuff about Leung Ting and William Cheung it got me interested in seeing what other Wing Chun systems were doing. Coming from a William Cheung school I heard a lot of shit talking about "Modified Wing Chun". I always thought it was obvious who was teaching Modified Wing Chun but I kept my mouth shut. It's always seemed to me that there is a lot of issues with Yip Man's students. These videos have been a big help there is a lot of stuff I don't think many people know because we don't have access to these circles. My Sifu had to go to Australia to learn and I trained on like two maybe three occasions with William Cheung here in Kansas. I was just thinking KFG have you seen Cheung's book My Life with Wing Chun? In his book he has some letters from Bruce Lee if I remember correctly im going to have to look again but im wondering if these are authentic. I have heard that supposedly Bruce thought highly of William Cheung but im wondering if this is really true.

    Thank you for stating (in regards to the Wong Jack Man fight) that "It's another guy who doesn't want to be there."
    Yeah, Wong Jack Man's entourage were a bunch of young punks(!), most of whom were barely out of their teens, who most likely talked him into it, since the Chinatown martial arts community actually wanted to ignore Bruce's unfortunate remarks at the Sung Sing Theater. (Well one of the three with Wong Jack Man was a kid nicknamed "Ya Ya" Wu. That nickname is descriptive.)
    And at the time, Wong Jack Man's understanding of English in 1964...wasn't the best.
    Relating that is despite the various narratives (by the Lee Estate) that it was an "official delegation sent by The San Francisco Kung Fu Community to stop Bruce Lee from teaching whites!" (The exclamation point is deliberate.)
    That's why I dig your show. You don't engage in the bull...oney. ;-)

    Great explanation about people who are unhappy with their level of ability and cafeteria skill shopping through schools. Have seen a few guys like this. Full of name dropping and mediocre knowledge and very little skill. Typically they know it all and it must be the school they are at. Not the lack of effort, humility and pressure testing. If you plateau on a positive point (skills exceeding your brothers and sister)and can find no help to break through, then it made be time to venture out.

(Ironically the Roots book had a paper glossy cover sheet that can be removed when the curse catches his demo partner, if it hasn't.) In the Roots and branches of Wing Tsun,(First edition, page 204) a photo of the 1991 Chi Sau Champs of San Francisco is shown. I would love to know exactly who is who. Si-Fu Elmond is on his left I think, and Sifu Robert Jaquet's face on his right, and my first instructor Si-Hing Denis Bone is on the far right of the image in all black with the red ribbon and beard. Any stories you know about that event would be interesting too. Thanks,....

    On top of what you said about someone showing up on the set of Enter the Dragon and beating up Bruce Lee, can you picture how the Producers and Director would freak out? Warner Brothers execs had invested hundreds of thousands of dollars into producing this movie. If someone showed up and beat up the star of their movie, it would threaten the completion of their project and their investment. They probably had insurance policies on Bruce; certainly now a days movie producers have their lead actors insured. If something happens to one of them and the movie can't be completed, or has to start re-filming from the beginning with a different actor it costs millions of dollars! The time the stunt man challenged Bruce and Bruce popped him and was like, "OK. Shows over. Let's get back to work", was no big deal because Bruce was fine and filming continued, but if Bruce had lost and been injured, wow! That would have been a big deal because it threatens the movie completion. Everybody would have known about it.

My Sifu Eddie Chong had to change lineages after a couple of decades.. His Sifu would not make him a "Sifu".. they said it was his attitude.. im thinking because he wasnt the right kind of Chinese..or something else political like that. I'm not so sure Bruce won that fight with Wong Jack Man but we will never really know. The fact is Afterwards he never taught Wing Chun again. So the Chinese who ran things on the west coast SF USA got what they wanted Bruce's schools shut down. To this point I say he lost the fight. His death and celebrity cement his legendary status so people refuse to see Bruce Lee in a negative light especially if it was fighting for his very right to teach westerners Wing Chun. Also his fighting style changed to a more practical street fighting combination of different marital arts techniques that he learned from other disciplines subsequent to the bout. He saw an opportunity to improve upon Chinese and other martial arts and he had to teach something new anyway so Jeet Kune Do or the precusor to MMA was born. In My mind Jeet Kune Do is the only truly American Made Martial Art.

    • @TheKungFuGenius
      @TheKungFuGenius  Год назад +1

      This is not true, I had this conversation with John Little two weeks ago. I lot of people believe he stopped teaching Wing Chun but it’s simple not true. I don’t think any level-headed person believes Bruce lost that fight - the counter narratives are a a mess and mostly discrepant stories from WJM’s ilk. JKD is no more American than Ed Parker’s kenpo, and I’m not sure why that matters anyway.

      @@TheKungFuGenius right he didn't stop teaching private lessons with backyard buddies. but he closed his eponymous public schools.. Jun Fan. which is a glaring fact. Perhaps he realized how disrespectful he was being to the SF Cantonese cultural traditions. IDK. The fact that he focused on cardio training subsequent to the fight tells me he gassed out during the fight, suggesting the longer 25 min is accurate, either beating him or chasing him. I maintain that JKD is the only American mixed martial art. "The formless form" Bruce did not even want to give it a name. You should look into it more. Of course lots of the foundational principles come directly from WC but also fencing boxing judo jui juitsu etc... all have influence on JKD. Its like Pizza in America with all manner of toppings it doesn't really resemble the ancestor original form from Italy any longer. American Pizza is its own style...and multiple styles at that. Those versions of pizza are American pizza. Bruce Lees JKD is indeed an American mixed Martial art by definition because he invented it in California and was born in SF. His teaching method for students to learn what is useful and practical for an individuals body and to discard the techniques that don't work in a practical real fight is revolutionary in the Martial Arts Community. I think during the fight with Man he realized how impractical most Kung Fu moves are in a real fight. hence the inspiration for cardio and JKD, Americas first Martial Art.
