That was alovely home and setting. Just like you, I have lived in many different homes...and am house hunting right now too. This next home will be my "unicorn home" too. So, thinking on that note...I am paying more attention to levels of home and stairs. Is there a room and bathroom on main floor that could be master bedroom as I age. If you and hubby are planning to be there forever, that room on main level is very important. Surgeries, sickness do occur...so you need good wide door entrances, wide halls....that could accommodate a wheelchair. Also, the upstairs rooms at that adorable home had a lot of twists and turns, small stairwells and a lot of little landings and steps. So quaint and authentic....but would be a really hard workout if hubby or you were sick, on crutches, eyesight not great, etc. If this is forever home and you want a lovely quirky authentic home...then try to visualize where you could put in an elevator in a big closet or even a stairwell electric chair ramp in a back of home stairwell. The grounds were amazing too...and you probably need to figure in grounds upkeep costs in budget. I love creating beautiful gardens...but will I be able to mow, till, trim, plow...or want to...as I age. My hubby spent 4 hours plowing EACH DAY when winter set in. He also cut and hauled wood in for our multiple fireplaces. Think about wood fireplace in one room...gas in others. Also expensive if you want fireplaces going each night. The last suggestion is...ask to see last winter's heating bills....and summer's air conditioning electric bills. Love old homes, love lots of land...but you need to plan how to maintain both...once you cant do it all yourself...if it is to be your forever home. We found out our home's lovely high position on a hill, overlooking sights for miles....meant only one propane company was willing to risk our steep driveway to during winter...and gouged us for deliveries! We were in very rural setting, loved it...but also were last on list of restored utilities each time a snowstorm or summer winds...took out power lines. A generator was purchased as we aged...expensive, but better than hauling water in buckets to flush toilets, trying to close off rooms and heat one area with wood fireplace, etc. At first, it is romantic and brings out pioneer spirit and appreciation of these hearty colonists...but when you hear from authorities that heat and electric will be "out" for 1-2 WEEKS...IT IS NOT SO ROMANTIC! ...which brings up another point...try to get a water source on your land...a pond, a stream...even a working cistern. Life...and our country...can and does change, constantly. If, years from now, you are settled in your unicorn house and well or city water source has problem....you would be so happy to have your own, private secondary source for water. Dont let it be widely known, just let it be a quiet sense of personal security. I once lived in a town where a gas drilling operation polluted the town's water system. There was no other water supply available! Houses hooked up to city utilities had nothing. Water bottles, bags of ice...gone from all grocery stores up to 1 hour away! People with portable home and barn generators had police "confiscating them" for "public buildings" to be used for shelters. ...So much for planning for your own family shelter. Farmers had people tramping on their land, looking for creeks to gather jugs of water. Our colonists knew how to prepare, how to keep some things private...as a way to protect supplies and families in times of great unrest or crisis. We had a small taste of how crazy people can get when folks hoarded toilet paper at beginning of covid pandemic. If your unicorn home is going to be on private, quiet setting...think of a secondary water source, ease of delivery of wood and propane if needed, a secondary heat source like woodstove or fireplace, ability to plow or keep drives open because even if you hire it...doesnt mean it will be dependable help in crisis. Lots to consider and discuss with spouse. I lived 30 years in remote settings...loved it and cherish every memory. But had to sell after hubby's sudden, fatal accident there. I couldnt plow mile long driveway due to my own health disability.. I had to heat our home with wood stove and was stuck alone, taking care of myself, each time storms took out utilities. It was a mile drive, with hills and rough terrain...so I couldnt make even a hike out. With winter and spring winds...I lost electric and cell phone reliability. I spent a winter alone, doing best I could, living from my stored pantry. Spring came, put it on market...finally, in late Fall, sold it all to young couple who were looking for a rural home. Cycles of life, just like seasons....so, now I am looking for my new forever, unicorn home. Want a little bit of country in homestyle and views, but closer to a small town...and nearer to my extended family members, so I can watch little kids growing up and share family times with them.

Thank you for taking us all along. The antique homes have such a special charm. My favorite period in history is before and around the revolutionary war. My taste in architecture is primarily along the lines of Andrea Palladio (I LOVE Palladian windows). One cannot deny the well kept and charm of this lovely property. I wonder if they have ever prepared a meal using those fireplace cranes. I cannot recall his name at the moment but there was a chef famous in Philadelphia with a well known restaurant that did a tv series cooking in homes of the revolutionary period actually following recipes and cooking in fireplaces utilizing the cranes and cast iron cooking pots. He was FABULOUS and it was such a treat to see the historical locations!

My brother and his wife just bought their retirement home not far from there, a 1700's farmhouse that is quite similar, 3 fireplaces, wide plank wood floors, with outbuildings to match. I loved the huge walk-in fireplace in the keeping room (kitchen) and the secret passageways used during the war to hide from the British. It was such a fun place to grow up. Linda, thank you for a wonderful tour of the home. I still love your home more. As much as I did like the Harvard home, I feel that it just isn’t a forever home. Too many steps as you age. But it was fun seeing the home. The style seemed a little bit more primitive than yours as well. Thanks again for the tour... I know you will fine “the house”.
