heres the messed up thing for me is that im also thinking how great that would be. then 9/11 pops into my head and im not so sure anymore. i know its hypothetical and what not , i guess it left that devestating impression burned onto my head that apparently i cant even daydream about time travel anymore WTF sorry just thinking out loud. MIDDLE FINGER to bin laden.
So true. The It's Hard album version pales in comparison. Better guitar tone, better guitar solo, and snare drum sound here on this soundcheck version. They should have recorded all their records live like this IMHO wpJ!
One of my all time favorites, as a concert goer I have enjoyed seeing THE WHO in different venues near Chicago multiple times!! I consider myself lucky to have had this experience. Never stop Rockin!!
@Sp0iler2u you're exactly right. I loved the way MTV was about the music, not simply a goofy youth channel. The extra riffs Townsend laces into this song make this so much better than the studio version!!!!!!!!
I feel very fortunate to have seen 'The Who's' 1982 tour. I was 16 and it completely changed my life. During the last song of the 3 hour set Townsends fingers were bleeding on the fretboard. That defined rock and roll for me.
I'm watching "law obiding citizen" and herd this song so I used "shazam" to figure out the name. I like the whole thing and was thinkin of sampling this for a hip-hop song. Thank u for having it up-loaded.
Recorded in September 1982 at the Capital Center in Maryland. Afternoon rehearsal for the first gig of their 1982 American Tour. PT's art school buddy, Richard Barnes, makes in appearance during the early part of the video wearing the yellow jacket. Tim Gorman on keyboards.
Capital Center was home arena of the NHL's Washington Capitals. Sometimes Canadian-based NHL teams were the visiting team. Canadian and American flags in the rafters.
it was 1982, though...but come on, you never seen pete townshend look so damn clean cut and shaven? i haven't since then, and i always come back to this great video to remember a great time back in the days of early mtv......the fashions were just as great as the music and the videos too!!
This song was a huge radio hit in 1982, but this was the version MTV put on the air, which was MUCH better. They all look so young and healthy....rockin' version.
Definitely one of my favorite videos of all time. My favorite part is when Daltry gets out of a Caddy Limo looking fresh and ready to go, then Townshend gets out of an E-150 Econoline van and looks absolutely lost, until he gets this look of relief on his face when he finally sees the guy with the donut and coffee. Second favorite is the end when he says, "That was a bit better" Are you kidding? Absolutely awesome! Classic!!
' "Eminence Front" is a song written and sung by Pete Townshend of The Who. It appears as the sixth track on the group's 1982 studio album, It's Hard.'
I heard this on the GMC commercial and couldn't think of what movie I heard this song in, but then I saw your comment and remembered! This is the song that he plays on the Ipod, while killing that guy?
This was filmed at the Capital Center in Largo MD outside of Washington DC. I remember this because I was driving the limo at the begining of the video.
I never knew that The Who did this song, this is one of the Best Songs I have Ever Heard in my existence, with funk and rock together. Its got that Weird Funk sound to it you just don't hear, excellent song.
I was bummed when they broke up after this album in the early 80's, I thought the album was really good and modern, I was really into the Who at the time. I think New Wave and Elvis Costello replaced them as my music for the rest of the decade. Nice to revisit this song, I had actually forgotten so much of what I used to really love, thanks for posting!
I grew up on this version cause MTV played it all the time. I love it cause it's a live/soundcheck and Townshend's lead guitar work rules on this. Rules.
You're not watching very carefully. Roger is most definitely playing rhythm guitar on this song. Back when was formed as The Detours in the early 60's, Roger was actually the lead guitarist and Pete played acoustic rhythm guitar, while Doug Sandom sang lead. When Sandom left, Roger put the guitar away and became the lead singer. I think after that, he didn't play guitar onstage with The Who until this tour. He played guitar on this song, It's Hard, and Love's Not For Keeping.
I remember seeing this when it came out on MTV. I was thinking how much more I like his guitar solo in this than the studio album. I wish they released this version on CD.
this was actually a live sound check, best version of this song ever!
What an incredible band The Who were. Phenomenal talent. Most of today's music stars could never hope to get even close to this level of talent.
yada yada yada - STFU ~
Ox was just KILLING that bass riff ..... one of the best ever!
GOD what I would give to be back in 1982 again!!
Ditto guys!
Same here. Graduated college that year. Would love to be back there again.
heres the messed up thing for me is that im also thinking how great that would be. then 9/11 pops into my head and im not so sure anymore. i know its hypothetical and what not , i guess it left that devestating impression burned onto my head that apparently i cant even daydream about time travel anymore WTF sorry just thinking out loud.
MIDDLE FINGER to bin laden.
Class of 82 😀
To me, this version is WAYYYY better than the one played on radio and in commercials.
So true. The It's Hard album version pales in comparison. Better guitar tone, better guitar solo, and snare drum sound here on this soundcheck version.
They should have recorded all their records live like this IMHO wpJ!
Indeed
Word
Nice sound check version!!! This song is absolutely delightful!!!
Ran miles and miles and miles to this song!!!! Love this version of it!
Great song by the Who in Toronto . thank you for 70s80s90s Cats ,...
Love this song, one of my favorite work songs, best ever recording, they nailed it.
Just beyond brilliant guitar work!
That tone is to die for! Pete is a VERY underrated lead player and he shows anyone who think other wise what's what right here.
eminence front is so disco, but with the who style. great rock song!!! Pete looks and sound incredible!!.
Hey it's a cool groove for dancing in a club. I have played this song live and it was FUN.
Rick, keep dropping this medicine song
One of my all time favorites, as a concert goer I have enjoyed seeing THE WHO in different venues near Chicago multiple times!! I consider myself lucky to have had this experience. Never stop Rockin!!

I'm here because I absolutely love this song.
Love the song.from Thailand
This is the best version of this. the solo is way creative. Never thought of Pete as a lead player til I heard this.
I feel very fortunate to have seen 'The Who's' 1982 tour. I was 16 and it completely changed my life. During the last song of the 3 hour set Townsends fingers were bleeding on the fretboard. That defined rock and roll for me.

Meiner Meinung nach der beste Song, den The Who je gespielt haben!
Der geht durch und durch und jagt einem Schauer für Schauer über den ganzen Körper.
The greatest band to come out of West London, no questions asked, no quarters given, turn it up people.
Jesus Christ what an awesome song. Everything about is is awesome. Those synthesizers are freaking mesmerizing.
Recorded in September 1982 at the Capital Center in Maryland. Afternoon rehearsal for the first gig of their 1982 American Tour.
PT's art school buddy, Richard Barnes, makes in appearance during the early part of the video wearing the yellow jacket. Tim Gorman on keyboards.
took or kids to see The Who in '82
If the live portion of the video was recorded in Maryland, why would they have a Canadian flag hanging from the rafters? Check 2:07.
Capital Center was home arena of the NHL's Washington Capitals. Sometimes Canadian-based NHL teams were the visiting team. Canadian and American flags in the rafters.
I like the "cool" attitude of Pete when he gets out of the van. Just another day at the office. Nice approach. This video takes me back .
THE best version of this song, thx!
This song enlightened me to The Who although my favorite is now Magic Bus Live at Leeds 1970 i still love this song
My dad loves this song, so I heard it quite a bit growing up. So hearing it in The Infiltrator was a throwback, came right here.
What a song....what a band!! Long live The Who!
I miss that arena! So many many fond memories!
wicked great tune!!!!!
Great version of a great song........

Eminence front. Eminence front, it's a put on!
Love that
That number would be as contemporary today as it was when written. Fantastic piece of music.
Awesome. Everything about it. LOVE IT
This song was a huge radio hit in 1982, but this was the version MTV put on the air, which was MUCH better. They all look so young and healthy....rockin' version.
@MemphisConservative completely agree-one of my faves by them-and i love when pete gets a chance to lead©
This is my favorite version
Definitely one of my favorite videos of all time. The guy with the donut is Alan Rogan , guitar tech, he just passed away a few years ago. He worked for many bands over the years but mostly PT.
such a funky song dude i can listen to it forever
I still have a couple of blurry Polaroids from this tour in Dallas in 1982. Pete from about three rows from the stage. Fucking awesome.
I used to watch this on MTV a lot back in the day.
+Pablo D. Martinez this was an original back in the day
I think this is Pete's best guitar playing concerning his solos
That jacket Daltry has on is BAD ASSED!! Saw them in '77 and '79. Pure Genius!
imho - one of the best songs in rock and roll,
I love this song.
Capital Centre in Landover, MD. It closed in 1997 and was demolished in 2002, so don't go looking for it.
This is a great song and makes one think.
it was 60s and 70s and then gag DISCO. Music companies took over again.
One of the BEST, most underappreciated WHO songs! GREAT video!
Mr John Entwistle. RIP. One of the best.
This is not the studio version, it's a sound check audio/ video recording. Damn awesome sound check!
They used to blast this song over the PA before Charger games. Maybe they still do, havent been to a game in a while. I love the keyboards!
It's all a put on.. Love this song
Coming to ;you live in wet Miami this weekend, rock on WHO
' "Eminence Front" is a song written and sung by Pete Townshend of The Who. It appears as the sixth track on the group's 1982 studio album, It's Hard.'
I like Roger Daltry playing guitar too, how cool is that!!!
Obsessed because of the movie Law Abiding Citizen...can't stop watching it or listening to this song...
The same here ;)
I heard this on the GMC commercial and couldn't think of what movie I heard this song in, but then I saw your comment and remembered! This is the song that he plays on the Ipod, while killing that guy?
EXACTLY
Oh my god, such soul from our main boy here! And Pete, ah, Pete...always performing to n'er disappoint! Love you guys!
You know you are a talented band when your lead singer and lead guitarist can switch places and still be amazing.
Greatest live band there ever was...always gime me goosebumps.
I remember when I first saw this and decided an all-black Tele with a maple fretboard and humbuckers was about the coolest thing possible. :)
Townshend arrives in a van and Daltrey arrives in a limo.. Thats about right.
This was filmed at the Capital Center in Largo MD outside of Washington DC. I remember this because I was driving the limo at the begining of the video.
I love how the intro guitar starts as Pete jumps out of the van. Superb editing! 😎
0:27 One of the Greatest Frontmen EVER. Great Tune, Thanx for the post
Love the Canadian flag in the background! Canada loves The Who!!
PT IS THE MAN... BEST DAMN ROCK SONG WRITER EVER!
@MemphisConservative : AGREED. One of their all-time baddest songs... Simply Badass...
My youngest son loved that song we would listen to it cranked heading to the hills to go sledding. Lost him 6 years ago! Phk!!
muy buena rola un clasico de the who, eminence front de 1982
You people are right - that guitar solo kicks major ass. And the vocal is tougher too.
great guitar playing!!!!!!
For as far as I've seen them, I think the Eminence Front guitar solo in this vid is the best one Pete has ever done :P
Awesome tune, glad to see the younger generation enjoying this
Pete Townsend and roger daughtry no joke
awesome! love this song! in my top two!
I never knew that The Who did this song, this is one of the Best Songs I have Ever Heard in my existence, with funk and rock together. Its got that Weird Funk sound to it you just don't hear, excellent song.
Good tune..I like.. Reminds me of the time when it came..

Best Who song period.

Amazing song. Guitar out of stars
This is my favorite song by The Who.
I grew up on this version cause MTV played it all the time. I love it cause it's a live/soundcheck and Townshend's lead guitar work rules on this. Rules.

Just Awesome!
Such a sick bass riff when it kicks into the chorus.
