This is the version that played on MTV when this album came out. BY FAR the BEST version of Eminence Front. Pete's solo's are so good on this take. To me this version is miles better than the original on the album and any other live recordings that I have heard. Thanks for posting!!!
Damn straight it did. I was like a senior in high school, and this vid DOMINATED, and more than held its own against that awesome second English invasion stuff which was also awesome.
By far, their greatest offering. If they had done nothing else, THIS ripped the shreds of true rock! Any objection, any complaint, is just: this needs to last all night in your brain and take no apologies!
Not really, this album was garbage. They all hated each other, Kieth's death was devastating emotionally and artistically, and it showed in the lack luster writing and dull performances. I saw this tour, and it was...not good.
This one has stood the test of time. As has the fact that I cracked up then and now when Daltry shows up in a limo, and Townshend and Entwhistle show up in a van. Not sure if that was planned, but spot on for the song
Actually, they were pretty much spent by 82 as this was their very last album, which was a poor album overall EXCEPT for this killer track. How they managed to go out with such a big BOOM is amazing. This was their last hit, but it is also one of their very best.
Townshend’s guitar on this version is so clean and precise. A little meatier than the studio version. Good separation with what Daltrey’s playing. He nailed it
Let’s not forget, Larry, Graham, Bootsy Collins, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten, and Stanley Clark and Sting , but I have to agree with you. This is one of the best bass players.
It's so weird seeing Roger playing guitar here. This is one of the few Who videos of him doing so. It's also weird seeing John entwhistle here, especially since he's been gone for so long.

This is one of the post Keith Moon songs that worked out well, also because it actually needed straight forward drums. It might as well have been a Townshend solo album track though, unlike other Who songs he sang.
It's sometimes said that it's not really a 'Who song' because it's so uncharacteristic, but I'd say that being so different is part of what makes it great! And isn't it unrepresentative of Pete's solo material too? Incidentally, Pete said at a Who gig I saw in London a few years ago that there's a version they recorded with an excellent lead vocal from Roger. He thought this deserved to be heard one day.
andzwe, funny, I just posted about how the chord progression in the verse and chorus, although in a different key, is the same as for "Give Blood"...so, a few years, a key change and a tempo boost later, it kind of became a Townsend solo track.

But yes, straightfoward drums are definitely what this song needs. I would just prefer a bit thicker SOUND, is all. 👍

You could be right, but I'd suggest checking out the astonishing five star review visible on the Rolling Stone website. www.rollingstone.com/music/music-album-reviews/its-hard-185952/
Though never being a big Who fan, this particular track would be one of my few favourites of them, particularly from their final two [80's] album releases with Kenny Jones. I've often wondered how this tune would have sounded had Keith still been alive on it ... I think many of the songs from those two albums _(Face Dances_ and _It's Hard)_ not only represented some of the very best evolutionary process towards a more mature-sounding Who, but essentially, captured the very essence of just 'who' they really are.
Townsend really never got the credit he deserves for being such a tremendous guitar player. His songwriting perhaps was what he was famous for but he could always really make a guitar sound like him.
I m back in high school all over again , this song was playing as we jumped into a friends VW van after school , we rolled out onto the parkway with other High Schoolers in pursuit , our gracious driver starts to weave with the music starting our youthful group of followers to do the same , it was all the way unforgettable ,in that moment no one around but our group for 3 miles , craziness how one song brings back something you forgot over time .

I understand he quit playing guitar because during the day he worked in a sheet metal factory and his fingers would get sliced up. It became too painful to then play the guitar at night.
This is the coldest cut they ever made.... to this day is funky as heck.
