I was blaring Limelight at a stoplight tonight and the girl next to me was dancing to it in her car and she gave me a big smile and thumbs up 😁. Haha it was a great moment that’ll become a fond memory for us both. RUSH Forever! 🤘
That’s killer, bro! It made me chuckle though because in about 1988 or 89 I had a Toyota 4x4 that had a big ol thumpin’ box in it (like, with 12 inch subs) behind the seat. I was only 18 or 19 years old, knew it all, and nobody could tell me shit. I came to a busy intersection one sunny afternoon and couldn’t understand why nobody was going on the green light…..? “Awe, man! They all must be jamming to my killer jams,” I thought as I slowly pulled into the intersection…. Right then, a HUGE fire engine 🚒 passed maybe 6 inches in front of my front bumper. That was the day I learned life lesson #3. It’s not all about you. And that Rush will always save the day.😂🤘😎

I was curious to know how I missed where his thoughts had been directed at your Dad's approach to his treatment. Please let me know if I am overlooking the connection or if is there a possibility that he is referring to Neils's treatment choices. Take care.
I was never really into this genre growing up but my brother was always a big Rush fan. Now that I’m older and branched out I see why. These guys fucking rock.
I had the same dynamic with my older brother. He was RUSH, I was REM, never the twain shall meet (though, I have to admit, I did own Permanent Waves, which remains my favorite RUSH album). Now that I'm older, I've gained a much deeper appreciation for the band.
It's so timeless but still relevant to the way fame , popularity tends to change into a whole different path...many who lose their way aborting what they believed in or what they were doing it for...
In 1989, my best friend, a hardcore RUSH fan, took me to see them live in Oklahoma City. During the concert I went from casual listener to instant fan. After the show was over I insisted (against my friends wishes) that we follow the band to their hotel to meet them. We did and while Geddy Lee was politely signing my friends tour book I saw Neil Peart leap out of the limo and literally sprint past all the fans gathered by the front door. He was gone in a flash to calls of his name. I thought to myself at the time "What a jerk!". Years passed and I ended up working as a dj at a classic rock radio station. For the first time in my life I actually listened closely to the words of Limelight and recalled my friend telling me that Neil wrote all the lyrics for the band. It suddenly clicked in my mind. He wasn't a jerk at all. He was living his own words. "I have no heart to lie. I can't pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend." Respect. Rest in peace Neil. The greatest drummer ever.
Here we go guys. No strippers, fancy cars, mansions, crazy video concepts, macho b.s.. Just a trio of dudes purely doing what they do best....fucking rock. Period
I don't like this kind of music video (Rammstein is definitely the best at doing at them), but holy shit, how much better this is from all the generic pop shit today,
Ling Bon Much respect to Jimi and the boys, and even the likes of Cream, and others I'm forgetting. However, none of them had the run that Rush has had over the years. Certainly Jimi and the boys are among the best as well, I agree.
epic solo. although the guitar playing is incredible, it's the drumming accompaniment that really makes me feel it. the solo starts in a 3/4 timing and transitions to 4/4 for the climactic build. prog rock at its finest.
Rest in peace dad, this was our song. Reminds me of the good ole days riding around talking about life, listening to Rush and exchanging smiles. This song is very bittersweet for me.. miss you so much.
Telling of the Lying Times and Orwellian strangeness of today, there's Witch Hunt: The night is black without a moon, the air is thick and still The vigilantes gather on the lonely torchlit hill Features distorted in the flickering light, faces are twisted and grotesque Silent and stern in the sweltering night, the mob moves like demons possessed Quiet in conscience, calm in their right, confident their ways are best Oh-oh-oh No The righteous rise with burning eyes of hatred and ill will Madmen fed on fear and lies, to beat and burn and kill They say there are strangers who threaten us, our immigrants and infidels They say there is strangeness too dangerous in our theaters and bookstore shelves Those who know what's best for us must rise and save us from ourselves Quick to judge, quick to anger, slow to understand Ignorance and prejudice and fear walk hand in hand
I just watched part of Geddy's book and an interview about what this song is really about. I can understand that when you've made it in the world, there are fleas and ticks just dieing to try and latch on to what you've worked so hard for, for your own reasons. It might sound selfish to some, but I could completely understand withdrawing from everything and everyone, not knowing who you could actually trust as your friends and who were just vermin. And it is good to know who has your back, usually the people that saw your raw talent and helped you just so could accomplish your dream. Not actually taking from you, just sharing in the moments. Those are the friends until the end. I believe Neil was lucky to have that friendship.
So many great songs by RUSH. Songs of my youth...now growing old to all of those great songs written by Neil. Not only the best drummer/percussionist of rock but also one of the best lyricists rock ever produced. RIP Neil Peart
For those of you young kids who don't know the band Rush here's the background: 24 gold records and 14 platinum records (including 3 multi-platinum) 5th behind The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Kiss & Aerosmith for most consecutive gold/platinum studio albums by a rock band in the US....RIP NEIL
I want to agree with you on this, even though I was never really "crazy" per se' about Bob Seeger (although I do own and listen to quite a few of his albums), but when I heard him sing that line in Against The Wind: "wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then" I was automatically forced to realize what an excellent songsmith Bob Seeger truly is. I always liked Night Moves also. Best regards, Fred @@rickwilliamson9248
Alex in an interview said after some thought that it was his favorite. It's other worldly to me and there's a certain sadness or yearning to it imo. It fits so perfectly in that perfect song.
There’s something about Rush I really love that I didn’t have the words for until just now: every song feels intensely nostalgic the first time you hear it. I guess that’s what people mean when they something is timeless. You’ve always liked Rush, you just didn’t know it yet.

RIP Neil ❤️ My Dad was heartbroken when he heard the news. He was at a restaurant by himself and the waitress asked if he was ok (he was really teary-eyed). Neil, and RUSH in general, had a real impact on my Dad.
I read the news in the paper at my local coffee stop-off where I live in Italy and without realising it let out a loud "oh no!" and had a quiet weep. Luckily nobody asked me anything, I wouldn't have been able to give a coherent answer. So, your Dad was probably one of many having a similar reaction. A hug to you both....

Neil Peart wrote most of Rush's lyrics incl the words for this song and it's an expression of how discomforting he found being famous. When his daughter Selena was killed in a car crash and then her mother Jacqueline died of cancer less than a year later, Peart quit the band and spent 2 yrs covering over 50000 miles on a solo motorcycle adventure.

2020 has been the saddest year ever - having lost the world's greatest drummer and guitarist. RIP Neil Peart and EVH. Thankfully the longevity of you both left us with an amazing musical legacy that will live on for many generations.
"Limelight was probably more of Neil's song than a lot of the songs on that album in the sense that his feelings about being in the limelight and his difficulty with coming to grips with fame and autograph seekers and a sudden lack of privacy and sudden demands on his time ... he was having a very difficult time dealing with. I mean we all were, but I think he was having the most difficulty of the three of us adjusting; in the sense that I think he's more sensitive to more things than Alex [Lifeson] and I are, it's difficult for him to deal with those interruptions on his personal space and his desire to be alone. Being very much a person who needs that solitude, to have someone coming up to you constantly and asking for your autograph is a major interruption in your own little world."
I hear that. Thats why in the rare occasion I do see someone in public or a restaurant I will just leave them be. They already have enough eyes on them, they're just people trying to enjoy their lives too.
@@josephpretorius8607 Same here. My dad and I passed by Frank Beard one day. We waved and said hi, and he waved and said hi back. It was all just in passing by but we just let him enjoy his day.
Yet he was always a gentleman and kind to those around him. He liked to be by himself on his bicycle and later his motorcycle. He was never rude to fans or followers. That's the "Canadian" in him. He will be missed.
I think Rush truly empathised with introverts and those who don't really feel comfortable in loud and excessively engaging environments where the eyes are upon them yet who prefer to think and reflect deeply and cultivate their own interests accordingly, especially a song like this. That could only mean that the guys of Rush were like this, especially Neil. With me being introverted and not particularly comfortable being in the limelight and centre of attention (I have never enjoyed celebrating my Birthday with anyone more than just a few close friends), this song exemplifies it profoundly for myself.

Ohh totally. Best song on a magnificent album.
I was blaring Limelight at a stoplight tonight and the girl next to me was dancing to it in her car and she gave me a big smile and thumbs up 😁. Haha it was a great moment that’ll become a fond memory for us both. RUSH Forever! 🤘
Moving pictures was an incredible album, and yes, I have a talent for stating the obvious.

Your response to @life, (if his chemo comment was addressing your father’s fight) is deserved. When I first read his comments, I connected them to Neils's cancer treatment choices and not your father's. Then after reading your response, I immediately re-read all of the posts. I think you have the definition of RUSH.
It's timeless. A snapshot of his personality, simple and brilliant.
Celestial intervention perhaps

He said it gave him the creeps when someone was starstruck by him. When the other two did meet and greets, Peart never went.
What about Tom Sawyer being a modern icon type?
Telling of the Lying Times and Orwellian strangeness of today, there's Witch Hunt:
The night is black without a moon, the air is thick and still
The vigilantes gather on the lonely torchlit hill
Features distorted in the flickering light, faces are twisted and grotesque
Silent and stern in the sweltering night, the mob moves like demons possessed
Quiet in conscience, calm in their right, confident their ways are best
Oh-oh-oh No
The righteous rise with burning eyes of hatred and ill will
Madmen fed on fear and lies, to beat and burn and kill
They say there are strangers who threaten us, our immigrants and infidels
They say there is strangeness too dangerous in our theaters and bookstore shelves
Those who know what's best for us must rise and save us from ourselves
Quick to judge, quick to anger, slow to understand
Ignorance and prejudice and fear walk hand in hand
Shy? Lol...Complete BS

It fits the song and mood of the lyrics so perfectly!
It's so very emotional. And that screaming fucking vibrato at the end just kills me every time I hear it!!!!
Alex in an interview said after some thought that it was his favorite. It's other worldly to me and there's a certain sadness or yearning to it imo. It fits so perfectly in that perfect song.
Here on RUclips, Alex actually does a tutorial on how to play "Limelight." Gads, if we'd only had such resources back in the day!
Alex Lifeson's style is what I love to call "melodic noise," if that made any sense. lol

So right. This song is the introverts anthem. I feel this hard!
