The six songs on “Steve McQueen” from “Bonny” through to “Moving the River” are relentlessly brilliant; I feel mugged by genius when I listen to them. One of the best runs in the history of popular music.
I agree, the best 6 song run in pop rock ever. If they'd chosen Moving the River to open the album instead of Faron Young, that would be the best whole side ever! Not that I dislike FY or the other tunes on side 2, but those 6 consecutive songs are chef's kiss and set the bar soooo high.
The music feels like the times. Of course ones age always has a big influence. I am 54 and whenever I listen to Prefab Sprout, it takes back to that exact time.
It's great how music does that It's the same for me. Getting old really brings home how short life is. Worrying about trivial stuff when we're young when we should just enjoy
WHO KNOWS 🤔.. WHY DID I WRITE THE SAME THING.? MAYBE BECAUSE I AM FROM "67 !!!!AH 😜 AHAH 😊 HAHHAH .. LISTENING TO THIS SONG TAKES ME TO THAT SUMMER .OUR YOUTH ..MANY MEMORIES..!!!. SO FAR NOW ... GREETINGS FROM ITALY ✋🇮🇹✋ .. HOWEVER YOUR COMMENTS ARE BEAUTIFUL AND NOSTALGIC ...
I always remember my mother liking this track. She's no longer here. But music has a way of transporting you back to a particular time. She never said why she liked the track so much.
A tune nearly 40 years old, I first caught it in 1999, 14 years after its release, when I audiotaped 92.7 WLIR-FM's 'Flashback Lunch with Malibu Sue' program. I was 39 years old then, very much in love 💕 with a lovely 25 year old woman. Today, I'm 64, she's 50, we've not contacted each other for the past 7 years (she married and had a son with another), yet 'Appetite' and many songs & artists from the 1980s remind me of my ongoing passionate love❤ for her. My thanks to Prefab Sprout and all you 80s music makers who helped me make it through the 90s. Cori, I wish you all the best in your life, God's blessings and my all out 💕 love for you forever. 'Ta-da!' T. Hamilton, Uniondale, NY 😊
Paddy McAloon one of the uk's most underrated song writers, absolute genius in my humble opinion without doubt one of the best singer/songwriters to ever come out of the U K
I agree, even if you don't like the music, his writing is simply genius. Oh and I love them, born in the eighties but I have almost all there records on vinyl :-)
I thought I was an expert in the best of late 20th century music… how am I just discovering Prefab Sprout now?? Better late than never - I’m mindblown. I’m still digging into their discography and I can already confidently describe them as one of the best bands of the ‘80s.
I got on the Prefab Sprout train late, although I loved Echo and the Bunnymen, The Cure, Smiths, Elvis Costello, Style Council in the 80s, I did not hear Prefab til the early 90s, and am bummed about it, as I truly love all of their music, and Paddy's stratospheric skills...
Prefab Sprout - One of UK's finest bands - The sound of cool pop sophistication - I grew up on this music - At times I thought I was in on the world's greatest secret that this band was the greatest on the planet but nobody else knew - In 92 when they brought out their greatest hits then many more started listening however they should have been huge - I was blessed to see them play live.
I love reading the comments cause in a high school of Van Halen listeners I truly thought this was my private band in the mid 1980's. Relieved and happy to find so many others felt the same.
I was also a sick rocker, lol, but I enjoyed some pop ballads too, but from this band I only knew the song "Bonny" and I didn't even know who "Prefab Sprout" was, I could have enjoyed this beautiful band more in my youth...
Is that an Andy Dog 'sweet bird of truth' icon i see before me? man after my own heart...i saw some guy in sainsburys last week in a leather jacket sporting that very artwork on the back of it...The the are a top band/person...
A lot of good music in the 80's early 90's. Best way to go is go with a song on RUclips and see where it take's you..Doesn't always work but when it does well worth it.
Listened to this song after many broken-hearted moments in the 80's. PS was a hidden gem that only a select group of music lovers appreciate. Such a great band.
Whatever country you are, you should have listened to this band back in circa 1985/1986. I heard it over the radio here in the Philippines during those years moving onwards.
I 30' than never heard about them too until months ago, heard a beach cover of Car and girls, is very good too. Groove Da Praia - Cars and Girls, very nice too
Paddy McAloon is easily one of the most talented yet overlooked songwriters of all time IMHO, right up there with Neil Finn of Crowded House and Colin and Andy from XTC.
I'm 48 yrs/o , huge 80s music fan and I never heard of Prefab Sprout until last week. Unbelievable! This is soooo good. I haven't heard a bad song yet. When Love Breaks Down, Cars and Girls, The King of RnR, Johnny Johnny....ahead of their time.
I remember their song "When Love Breaks Down" from this album "Steve McQueen" back then on MTV, but unfortunately it was the only song I ever heard at that time by them. This was during my junior year of HS. I remember thinking their style was akin to Dream Academy ("Life in a Northern Town"). Only recently did I look up that song on RUclips and sampled other tunes like this one. I remember nearly buying this album back then. Wish I had! I remember it came out around the time of Rush's "Power Windows" album (big fan here).
Kelly Paris I found a used 2007 remastered copy for $5.00, with an additional disc of acoustic versions of SM songs. Absolutely phenomenal! Highly recommended.
It's a very sophisticated band with great songs. They may have been a little too clever for mainstream success however. You are lucky to have found them. Enjoy!
Their absolute masterpiece. A perfect pop-song, of course. Remember the joy of finding 'Steve McQueen' after loving 'From Langley Park' in to pieces. It's a bit like realizing the world doesn't end, or at least to find your flower at home doesn't wither, but recovers after a spur of water.
Hard to believe this was only a minor chart hit in the UK and Australia. What an excellent song. I highly recommend listening to the whole album this track comes from, called "Steve McQueen" - very underrated and underappreciated album from that period.
For me, this group is just one of the best in the world. Paddy McAlloon is an extraterrestrial in the music world, a true genius. I met them a long time ago near my home in Montpellier, where Neil Conti, the drummer, has returned to live.
I love whipping up goodies in the kitchen & I adore sophisticated musicians - guess Which one is my all time fav pop music masterpiece??? Yep, this one
"Wishing she could call him Heartache but it's not a boy's name." That's the line that sold me on the Sprouts for life. Hard to believe this song is nearly 30 years old now...
It's basically a song about a woman(or man?) who has found that their lust for living, and other things, has produced a child. They're basically saying they should name the child Appetite after their appetite for living. I can appreciate Paddy's clever lyrics, but it's really the production that makes this song so great for me.
i was probably 20 when i listened to cars and girls, was smitten right then n there! stumbled onto this while simply browsing and Dear Lord! the memories that are flooding me right now!, those wonderful 80s!!! what a brilliant time that was! just glad I passed through those golden years, quite blessed indeed!
If you're here you know good music. Prefab is one of the best bands ever and you're part of the elite club that knows that.
Concordando plenamente!
Of course we know it ;)
One of the best song (AND ALBUM) of ever!!! ❤
Totally, Friends. I' m an Absolute Music Lover and PREFAB SPROUT is One of My Favourite Band since a long, long Time...
Completamente de acuerdo
Steve McQueen is one of the greatest albums from the 80's.
The album was renamed “Two Wheels Good” in the US and Canada to avoid litigation from the estate of the late actor.
One of the greatest albums ever! period!!
There is something special about this music, a unique magic that is that of the 80s. I think Steve McQueen is one of the best made albums of all time
Me 1989 living in Houston. I somehow found you guys. 30 years later, living in Italy and still loving you all.
Such a gorgeous song - loved it when I first heard it and love it now, almost forty years later…..!!!
Anni 80 ......una MAGIA che non tornerà più ma rimarrà INDELEBILMENTE impressa come MEMORIA ad ETERNO frattale della coscienza individuata.... ✋✋✋👑
I'm 57. Love PS sine 1985 when I listen to them for the first time. They never become outdated.
Your pretty old!
You'll get there mate. That's for sure. With half of our experience..sorry 😁
Lo stesso, ho 60 anni ❤
I love Wendy Smith's echoed vocals on this and everything else about it
Definitely the most endearing part of this great tune.❤
Paddy is easily one of, if not the best songwriter of his generation
He is the best
my words and meaning exactly
The six songs on “Steve McQueen” from “Bonny” through to “Moving the River” are relentlessly brilliant; I feel mugged by genius when I listen to them. One of the best runs in the history of popular music.

I feel mugged by genius is such a great line...
seven track run, don't do Horsin Around like that
The music feels like the times. Of course ones age always has a big influence. I am 54 and whenever I listen to Prefab Sprout, it takes back to that exact time.

Discovered this band by chance when I was 23 and I have loved them ever since.
I'm 26 now 😁
1985 .... now... still my favorite rock band ( the only one to be honest ) for ever ...
Welcome to the 80's club! A decade of an unbelievable number of awesome bands.
I discovered this band when I was 21 and have loved them ever since....I'm 60 now🤣
"Wishing she could call him Heartache, but it's not a boy's name"
--one of the best lines ever--
Amen to that
no
insanely good 💐
I always remember my mother liking this track. She's no longer here. But music has a way of transporting you back to a particular time. She never said why she liked the track so much.
Maybe because of she have good taste then ;)
this is one of the best-written songs of all time, hands down.
truth
I am grateful that I was able to spend my youth in the 80s. A great time with great music! I need a time machine!!
The Symbol Of Excellence, thanks Prefab Sprout 👍🎶🎶

I’m 20 now but I discovered this album when I was 15, such beautiful music. It’s always put me at peace.
Music of the spheres! the best love Prefab ❤
One of the best writers in the world!
lee mavers is greatest uk songwriter imo and hardly anyones heard of him.
Prefab sprout is wonderful
I thought I was an expert in the best of late 20th century music… how am I just discovering Prefab Sprout now?? Better late than never - I’m mindblown. I’m still digging into their discography and I can already confidently describe them as one of the best bands of the ‘80s.
I'm 43 and I love prefab sprout since 1985
Che anni meravigliosi,le persone erano così entusiaste e la musica fantastica
Appetite is a masterpiece, but Nancy (let your hair down for me) is beyond this world. Loved, love and I’ll love them forever ❤️
That is a fabulous song!
Paddy McAloon and Thomas Dolby are genuine creative geniuses ❤
The greatest English language song ever written.
Elegant, smart, light, assertive yet unaggressive, that's what this song is
Wow, couldn't find better words to describe this song - thank you from a lifelong PS admirer!
I love the Prefab Sprout music very much ❤. It is so sad that Paddy is ill now 😢.
probably the best pop song ever
I got on the Prefab Sprout train late, although I loved Echo and the Bunnymen, The Cure, Smiths, Elvis Costello, Style Council in the 80s, I did not hear Prefab til the early 90s, and am bummed about it, as I truly love all of their music, and Paddy's stratospheric skills...

I wish II could have been there, lucky you :)
World best band ever for ever ...
That`s pure 80`music, listen, enjoy and remind.
I love reading the comments cause in a high school of Van Halen listeners I truly thought this was my private band in the mid 1980's. Relieved and happy to find so many others felt the same.
I guess the school was in US
Nothing wrong with both Prefab Sprout and Van Halen.
Prefab Sprout were genius but Van Halen were a fun band with an excellent guitarist
I just found this band a year ago. Why aren't they talked about more? They better than a lot 80s singers.
Just discovered Prefab Sprout during quarantine. Been a tremendous pleasure digging through their catalog
Whatever country you are, you should have listened to this band back in circa 1985/1986. I heard it over the radio here in the Philippines during those years moving onwards.
Must admit I never heard of them either until seeing them on the professor of Rock, strange name
You should check out I Trawl The Megahertz. It’s wonderful.
I 30' than never heard about them too until months ago, heard a beach cover of Car and girls, is very good too. Groove Da Praia - Cars and Girls, very nice too
Che nostalgia!!!! Bellissima ❤❤❤
Lyrical master..genius. 🤺🤺
Oh, superb. Class song.
I love, love, LOVE his mustache, makes him look like a 2010s country star.
This is one of those songs that makes me yearn to go back to the 80s...
im 16 and i just discovered this song. this is the peak of music
you're only sixteen and already in the recesses of 80s music, keep it up 👍👍
One man wrote "Appetite" and "Bonny." What range! To listen to them one after the other on the album is humbling.
Man I miss the 80's. This one brings me back every time. Long live WLIR!
The way the intro melts into that kinda unorthadox drum groove is just so choice man
His moustache is gas!
Paddy McAloon is easily one of the most talented yet overlooked songwriters of all time IMHO, right up there with Neil Finn of Crowded House and Colin and Andy from XTC.
What a band
I ❤ Prefab Sprout, best pop band ever
I'm 48 yrs/o , huge 80s music fan and I never heard of Prefab Sprout until last week. Unbelievable! This is soooo good. I haven't heard a bad song yet. When Love Breaks Down, Cars and Girls, The King of RnR, Johnny Johnny....ahead of their time.
This song was my anthem during senior year. LOL I still have the album on vinyl.
Me too...)
It's a very sophisticated band with great songs. They may have been a little too clever for mainstream success however. You are lucky to have found them. Enjoy!
One of the best bands ever imo the lyrics were simple yet ridiculously brilliant at the same time
Best of album of 1985
In my opinion, this was and is Prefab Sprout's best track out of their whole music catalog. I really wish they had some mainstream success in the U.S.
Its the song with the most mainstream appealing qualities. They wrote a whole lot of good quality songs.
WithoutRemorse12 Indeed, they did.
I really do think Steve McQueen was their best album of the 80s, Protest Songs a close 2nd
I absolutely agree. 'Steve McQueen' is their best album by far.
I think “Don’t Sing” and “when love breaks down” are as good! But absolutely love this
Class IS Permanent!❤
So good..(it's almost painful) 👌
i agree
I LOVE THIS BAND SINCE 80, HUGES FROM BRASIL
this song is so beautiful
Don't argue about Prefab being one of the best ever bands or most underated
just rejoice that you came to know them xxx
Simply the best pop tune ever written.
He 's utterly a superior composer
Always n forever

The sound of crying , this track is my favorite .
@@kittkamo a great track!
This is what the cool kids of the 80s were really listening to. Fairlight dates it but the songs will never age.
The perfect pop song. Still gives me thrills after nearly four decades.
Aa@@q as@
I miss the 80's thé New wave lot of good good music and great artists of those years it was Magic our youth love forever rachid❤❤❤
That's a real good analogy
fantastic melody, 90s 80s memories..
one of the best records of the 80’s! beautiful ❤❤❤
L'avrò ascoltata 1000 volte e penso che l'ascolterò per tutta la vita...
Hard to believe this was only a minor chart hit in the UK and Australia. What an excellent song. I highly recommend listening to the whole album this track comes from, called "Steve McQueen" - very underrated and underappreciated album from that period.
So so so under rated and obscure.
Lemmy Kilmisters fabulous little brother
For me, this group is just one of the best in the world. Paddy McAlloon is an extraterrestrial in the music world, a true genius. I met them a long time ago near my home in Montpellier, where Neil Conti, the drummer, has returned to live.
Yo!.. that ba$$line tho🎯💯
& the cello on the 2nd verse🎯💯

You just took it from the tip of my tongue/laddle !!!
Never heard this track before. It's got a lot good things for it. 👌
"Wishing she could call him Heartache but it's not a boy's name."
That's the line that sold me on the Sprouts for life.
This is their best song IMO.
With Prefab sprout tunes the 80s stab you sweetly deep into your nostalgic heart and stay there.
Remember this, dancing in saturdays' afternoon discos, 17 years old. Love 80s so much.
icons of incredible music
I may have not been born when this was out but this is fire (:
Definitely.best band.they have it dialed in

kitchenware,Cherry Red ,Rough Trade ・・・・The 80's was a great time when many indie labels brought out various artists.
i was probably 20 when i listened to cars and girls, was smitten right then n there! stumbled onto this while simply browsing and Dear Lord! the memories that are flooding me right now!, those wonderful 80s!!! what a brilliant time that was! just glad I passed through those golden years, quite blessed indeed!

I still have a great Appetite for Prefab Sprout songs. Bring it on
They were so underrated.
Literally game riding through the English countryside. Much love from America.
Ich liebe diesen song. Seit jahrzehnten.
What a great underrated band
Steve McQueen, great album. Every song strong and brings back memories. Very under rated.
