One of the most sophisticated 80's songs with peerless production (sweeping strings, cool backing vocals and that seductively masculine sax! )Disarmingly sung with soul, style with a contemporary edge and message.
It's about the AIDS crisis. "I'm like a boy amongst men/I'd like a permanent friend" could be taken as someone dealing with their homosexual feelings and wanting to be in love; Could also be about being a gay man watching your friends die. "It'll get you in the end/it's God's revenge." The video itself has a bunch of visual metaphors as well

Good one hit wonder song, at least in the US. I can remember learning to drive a car at age 15 that summer and this song was popular. I also remember as soon as that song peaked at #14, it dropped down the charts faster than August 1986 was long.

best years of my life.so proud to be a part of the eighties
Chris me too. Was the best 👍
Good one hit wonder song, at least in the US. I can remember learning to drive a car at age 15 that summer and this song was popular. I also remember as soon as that song peaked at #14, it dropped down the charts faster than August 1986 was long.
Dr Robert...now that is Charisma and swagger lol
David Bowie
Great track 1986 good times full of fun happy days
I was born in 1981 so missed this really the first time round. Had the absolute privilege and pleasure of watching the band in Liverpool last week. Wow. What a show. I’m hooked! Dr Robert is raw talent. Love this!
Same.. but they had so many bangers - dig into the back catalogue you won’t be disappointed!
Did your parents play this? If so you have some cool parents. ❤
I graduated high school in 1981. I guess do the math. 😊
Last era of great music
The decade of the saxophone - such a sultry sound and awesome song
You never hear those anymore.
Try Junior Walker and the all Stars from the 60/70s. What does it take (to win your love for me). Sexiest sax ever.
catmel1954 Good call. I would also look up Maceo Parker. He’s still around but super old but still super funky.
He was James Brown’s saxophone player and he also player along side Prince for a tour or two. I love him and I love the Saxophone 🎷
I was thinking the same, the decade of the saxophone...
Yes, those saxophones popped up everywhere in the eighties. A song didn’t feel complete until you heard the horns blow.
Digging there scene since 1984 .I love his voice one of the best music vocals of the 80's .
He has a great voice.
I Love reading the wonderful comments to wonderful 80s music
I really miss the Avant-garde sound and look of the 80's British bands like the Blow Monkeys. When this song rotates in when I am driving along a big grin comes on quickly, fun music to listen to. Miss these times so much.
One of the my favorite 80’s grooves! My friend was a DJ at the college radio station and knew I loved this song so she played it on air dedicated to me. Great times. Miss those days.
I never get tired of this fantastic hit
happyness!!!
Amen.. always loved this song! Bring back the 80s!
Me too 😁
I was 23 when this amazing song was first released it gripped me then and it still does to this day.
Thank you Blow Monkeys 🎶❤️🎶
Yup, we had to have the single immediately!
I’m 22 and I can still appreciate this absolutely banger timeless stuff 🤌🏼
Funk and groove. Romance and style. Miss my 80’s. Class of 88
