A super distinctive and beautiful sound you can only get out of talented British groups like The Blow Monkeys. Some call it Sophisti-Pop. Love the 80s for this kind of brilliance. Their talent, creativity, style.
Wow.. the blowmonkeys were and still are my top group. Back in the 80's digging your scene was my favourite...didnt know this track existed...Simply FANTASTIC
I must respectfully disagree. As long as kids don't spend ALL their times on phones, I think it is important to give children cell phones and teach them how to use it appropriately, for safety reasons. I saw too many children go missing as a kid (one of them was my classmate who was found murdered - I'm still dealing with the trauma), so I think about these things a lot.
Damn Radio 1 for not giving this airplay, awesome song. "Whoops there goes the neighborhood" is an amazing album. As Robert has said many times, he was a spoke that never really fitted into the musical industry wheel..
In the video "It Pays to Belong" you see the 1980s mobile phones computers. Also there is a political statement about the then EEC, European Economic Community now called the European Union. Look at the scene in the video where the British passport is schreaded and the EEC passport is accepted at the airport.
It's kind of something to have all of those instruments, some unconventional -- possibly a reflection of their band, lyrics, and sound -- to be playing all at the same time while in sync with the vocals and make it sound as sweet and smooth as that. 'Oh, I know I should come clean/But I prefer to deceive.../I know it's wrong'; I know some people heard that because there were people all around, and people I knew and respected who would emulate his look and style. A little young to fully understand it at the time, but I think the band's response via their lyrics and through their experiences had a lot of resonance as to the acknowledgement of the zeitgeist and the attitudes of mainstream culture that could be more easily received and replied to through music, so thank goodness for music. 'I'd like a permanent friend/I'd like to think that I was just myself again.' This song is no LP version -- the verve; you have to go to concerts for stuff like this. And perhaps, it's this kind of variance in music that gave rise to the term, 'Alternative Music/Rock.' Love their sound and songs, still do.
It was amazing to hear this on their recent tour in 2018, Dr Rob played it acoustically, shivers down my spine and a tear in my eye... Where did 30 years go??
London is the leading cultural scene when it comes to European music; Unfortunately, it is not possible(?) to avoid London if you want to 'break through'...; make it big in London - you'll conquer the rest(world). I've heard
They were greats of MTV many years back but didn't get much airplay except for international hour and 120 minutes with Matt pinfield shame they were a great band with some real issues.
Not a smash hit back at the 80s simply because it was different if compared to regular pop those days, but therefore it still alive today. Great song, great band!
It is not that different to some of the other music around at the time. It is similar to some of Hue and Cry and Swing Out Sister's music in terms of the sound and vibe. Ditto Breathe and Johnny Hates Jazz.
I always liked Dr Robert's voice and theatrics
Digging Your Scene is a favourite

Dr Robert did his own thing, respect.
One of the cleverest, and most stylish videos of the 1980s.
The 80s carries a magic that is like a beautiful ghost, you see it but you can’t hold it
Its Jamie Davies I live in the UK I like listening to this song too and will you be my RUclips friend please David Carl Jones please mate?
Beautiful comment.
What a great comment to capture that decade.
Just discovered this gem! How did I miss this one back in the day?
His very good singer
This song deserves to be on number 1 spot back then!!
Wow.. the blowmonkeys were and still are my top group. Back in the 80's digging your scene was my favourite...didnt know this track existed...Simply FANTASTIC
Was a hit in many countries, Where you from?
Same I love the sophisticated pop sound with synths, funk and catchy melodies
they were your top group but you never knew this song?
@@MephProduction sorry, I meant... didn't know this track existed on RUclips
Best decade in music and fashion. Definitely.
Loving the fax machine and brick mobile phones-Love the 80's
Loved the days when it was only adults that had mobile phones then and not children
You got it all wrong, Mr. :)
I must respectfully disagree. I love how the video is also a catalogue of obsolete office equipment!
Jennifer Weglarz it was the 80's so the equipment was hi-tech at the time😀
You're so right
Wow another great track from this underrated band

Bombed into the Stoneage, loved that. I thought they epitomized all that was good about 80's music.
Choreography top drawer Well done!! Also innovative 'suit armour'
Always was a cool cat ,with a very distinctive smooth voice 😎
A classic english handsome singer 80.years,like simon Lebon or frontman who sings Gold
Beautiful Robert Howard 😗🤩❤
This British soul group & dead or alive were my favorite 80s music of the mid decade! 😎
I just recently discovered these guys and I’m totally hooked.
A song prime ABC would be proud to have written and amazing orchestration - wonderful band and so many great songs.
I love how they dressed for the office in the 80's
Me too,but i preferir the slim shapes of today
That truely was the 80's style of dress
Well, this whole concept (the song included) is addressing the yuppie boom and the utter greed for money it instigated.
@@joseantoniob5280 Slim threads dont move with the music ..
I love suits of the 80’s.
Their music just keeps on rolling
Cheeky Dr Robert 😊Now i am a lot older,i understand a lot of his songs
This has got to be sung at Mrs Thatcher who said “there’s no such thing as society”.....
Forever elegant people....music with charme... elegant
Still relevant now. Even more so.
Should have been a bigger hit.
Cool hair !!!
Brilliant Band !!
I woke up this morning humming this epic tune, love them my favourite group
musicista bellissimo, compositore geniale, musica piena di vita, sexy affascinante, talentuoso
Siempre será la banda de mi juventud. Elegante música !!! Hoy aún les escucho.

I have been looking for this song since I last heard it from radio in mid 2000s. And now in 2017 I've found it here in RUclips!! Yay!!!
Impresionante la música de este grupo.Que bellos recuerdos de aquellos años de buena música, cualquiera de sus temas me encantan
Probably my favourite BM track, love it , great memories, Anti-Thatcher track, as a lot of their stuff was.

I love this song!!
Muy favourite song: Digging your scene
Simply beautiful ...
Still just WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Who’d have thought this would become so relevant again in today’s times?
London reached it`s peak culturally in about 1987 since then it`s all gone downhill.
London is the leading cultural scene when it comes to European music; Unfortunately, it is not possible(?) to avoid London if you want to 'break through'...; make it big in London - you'll conquer the rest(world).
I've heard
Everything culturally, everywhere has gone downhill since 1987.

No one wears glen plaid as well as Dr. Robert does...
