Steve McQueen/Two Wheels Good had the most fantastic gem of all with "When Love Breaks Down". As to David Smith, yep, another underrated band in Aztec Cam.. "Birds" has always continued to impress me on Dreamland.
Possibly one of the most underrated bands ever? Maybe, but certainly Paddy McAloon is a master lyricist with insightful commentary on childhood, growing old and reflection. Just brilliant!
I'm from South America, and here music like Prefab Sprout never came or came a long time later. However, those of us who lived in the 80's, have in our souls a kind of detector of the spirit of this type of songs, which have something special that cannot be defined with words and although, like me, you listen to them decades later, your mind, when Instantly, he assimilates them, identifies them and miraculously they return you there, to the wonderful 80's, that time that will stay in our minds, until the last day we have to be here.
This song makes me cry , of happiness and sadness at the same time . For a world that is gone , and for the memories that are slowly fading away . Slowly cancelling from my memory the young kid I was back then 😢😢 These songs give me the chance to grab him for a little more time .

I too was born in '61 (very late December, so still 62), discovering PS around the time of release of Langley Park to Memphis (then quickly picked up previous release Two Wheels Good/Steve McQueen, Swoon impossible to find). Instantly became my 2nd favorite band of the 80s. My top three (with no apologies due to coming late to the party, after 1980) are Squeeze, Prefab Sprout and Siouxsie and The Banshees (The Clash just edged out, even though London Calling arguably the best album of the decade, and Joy Division not really an 80s band as Ian Curtis offed himself early in that year). Lots to choose from, I know, though these represent a range of styles that just could not be duplicated by others. The brilliant, evocative songwriting, unparalleled musicianship and innovative walls of sound that drilled deep into my psyche and really made me feel something. Not the mindless, cookie cutter drivel that most Midwesterners nodded their heads to. It was a great time to discover that rock, pop, punk, new wave, blues, reggae, etc., had important, worthwhile things to say - after teenage years spent mostly avoiding same (generally hated stuff others were listening to, especially in the late 70s).
I absolutely love Prefab Sprout and think Paddy McAloon is a writing genius. I've been having a Prefab renaissance for some months now. Can't stop listening to their many great songs. Someone tell Paddy how great he is and how much pleasure his songs bring us.
This song constantly plays in one of the biggest radios of classics from Argentina, Blue FM. I wouldn't have listened to it otherwise. It's so underrated.
The 80's are definitely my decade, I was 10 nearly 11 when they began and was 20 going on 21 when the 90's started. The decade that saw me leave school, get my first full time job, fall head over heels in love then experience having my heart broken a couple of years later. All of this happened with the greatest musical decade providing a soundtrack to my teenage years. Some great times and a few sad times, songs like this bring the memories tumbling back...
Have never been able to listen to this song without crying. He was so good wasn't he. We were spoilt in the 80s with the quality of musicianship and actually record companies still agreeing to that level of artistry and time and money taken for the production.

Cada vez que escucho ésta maravillosa música confirmo más y más que a los 'musicos' actuales se les acabó la inspiración para escribir buenas letras y hacer arreglos como éstos...
Indeed, this one among some others like "Interstellar" from Amplifier is very addictive. That jazzy tune backing vocals scat is so well balanced, somewhere between rhythm 'n blues and poppier 80's songs.
The breathless style of Deacon Blue's "When will you" is priceless. Blessed to have been a kid in the 80s and a young adult in the 90s. Two great eras of music.
I found Prefab Sprout after watching the 'Whats in my bag' episode with Walk the Moon. Can't tell you how glad I am. If I die, I want to wake up back in the 80s.
I'm so sorry to hear of your accident. Life throws such tests at us. Music holds and lifts us throughout our lives. It's an incredible gift. I couldn't live without music. I send you my very best wishes and good luck for the future.
Totally brilliant. Superb chords, bass line, great singing, great lyrics. One of the best songs to come out of the 80s. Long live Paddy McAloon and Prefab Sprout.
Its criminal that songs of this ilk are overlooked because they are forever linked to Hot Dog, Jumping Frog, Albuquerque. He wrote so many songs that deserved much wider acclaim. I have followed this band for 40 years now! I'm getting old xD
I'm 52 years old, and I remember "downloading" this song saturday by night from my radio to a 90 min chrome cassette. I waited by weeks until I captured it
That's soo TRUE! ..we did this captures with a lot of patience 😅... amazing how music works more hard in those times ..Great detail ! ..God bless you ✨
I’m 49 now. I just heard this song for the first time today- November 2nd, 2022. I don’t know how that happened that I went all this time without ever hearing this fantastic song before. I know if I’d have ever heard it before, it would have caught my ear like it does now. While the music I like now has dramatically expanded, I know this song has so many elements and features of music I’ve always liked. In addition, I don’t think I’ve ever heard a song from this band before. And I lived through all of the 1980s and have memories of every calendar year in that decade, many of them music-centric. There’s nothing about this song that is particularly alternative or edgy or outside of the musical mainstream at the time that would suggest this song wouldn’t have been all over the radio. And yet I’ve never heard it until today. Some things cannot be easily squared or understood.
@@patjungle9826 ...yes, i've stopped listening to almost all new music over last 20 years......still some good music but mostly junk over the last 20 years.....for Camouflage - only listen to their 1st album (that smiling face, pompeiji, music for ballerinas, i once had a dream)
I was 12 in 1980. So much happened during the next ten years that it would be impossible to list them. This song was one of those things though so enough said!
I'm deeply concerned why this genius has never hit the top spot. When love breaks down is not the best song of its generation. It's the best song of all time. Thanks the Sprouts
I discovered this song as it was my aerobics teacher choice for the final part of coming down and stretching. That gym was great, full of really cool people and I felt very sad when it closed and their owners moved to Spain. Never felt as happy on any other gym I went after that one and this song reminds me of all the good times spent there.
Lyrics : Brucie dreams, life's a highway Too many roads bypass my way Or they never begin Innocence coming to grief At the hands of life - stinkin' car thief That's my concept of sin Does heaven wait all heavenly Over the next horizon? Ah! But look at us now, (Quit driving) Some things hurt more, much more than Cars and Girls Just look at us now, (Start counting) What adds up the way it did when we were young? Just look at us now, (Quit driving) Some things hurt more much more than Cars and Girls Life's a drive through a dust bowl What's it do, do to a young soul We are deeply concerned Someone stops for directions Something responds deep in our engines We have all been burned Will heaven wait all heavenly Over the next horizon? Ah But look at us now, (Quit driving) Some things hurt more, much more than Cars and Girls Just look at us now, (Start counting) What adds up the way it did when we were young? Look at us now, (Quit driving) Some things hurt more, much more than Cars and Girls Little boy got a hot rod Thinks it makes him some kind of new god Well this is one race he won't win ('Cause life's no cruise-) 'Cause life's no cruise with a cool chick Too many folks feelin' car sick But it never pulls in Brucies thoughts, pretty streamers Guess this world needs its dreamers May they never wake up, ok But look at us now, (Quit driving) Some things hurt more, much more than Cars and Girls Just look at us now, (Start counting) What adds up the way it did when we were young? Just look at us now, (Quit driving) Some things hurt more, much more than Cars and Girls Just look at us now, (Quit driving) Some things hurt more, much more than Cars and Girls Look at us now, (Start counting) What adds up the way it did when we were young? Look at us now, (Quit driving) Some things hurt more, much more than Cars and Girls
This song has so many 80ies vibes in it... I was 14 or 15 when it came out. Long live our youth, when we had less and were happier. My friends have gone, separate liferoads, some are gone forever. As long I live I shall carry all those memories of good and bad.
Paddy McAloon is a great singer-songwriter and this is perfect pop, and it gets even better - believe it or not - when I avoid the distractions of the video. lol

such an amazing song, repeat all day.
Fun fact.. I played this on repeat 46 times today.... Never gets old... Love to all dreamers out there.... All right
.
It never ever fails ❤ love sent back 🙏
Thought I was the only one who did such things, such joy, butterfly kisses to the 80's.
Wow you must like the song just a little! I thought I played it a lot in the late eighties when I would spend at least half an hour listening to it!
Love from a dreamer ❤
Indeed, this one among some others like "Interstellar" from Amplifier is very addictive.
That jazzy tune backing vocals scat is so well balanced, somewhere between rhythm 'n blues and poppier 80's songs.
loved them along with Deacon Blue, Big Country and so many other mythical bands of the 80s
Big Country GREAAAAATTTTTT
The breathless style of Deacon Blue's "When will you" is priceless. Blessed to have been a kid in the 80s and a young adult in the 90s. Two great eras of music.
Agree. This fantastic song reminds me of Deacon Blue.
Il n'y a pas d'âge pour écouter ce groupe excellent,et musicalement au top
The 80s, what a glorious time for music
Love it ! Just fantastic!!🎶🎵
I found Prefab Sprout after watching the 'Whats in my bag' episode with Walk the Moon. Can't tell you how glad I am. If I die, I want to wake up back in the 80s.
What a great band , song and time to be alive , the 80's as a kid was awesome
i was there woo hoo x
not wrong 'great bands great music
what other cool bands were there like prefab sprout?
+Mon Oct 24 talk talk ,another good band
maybe The Bolshoi imo
La colonna sonora della mia gioventù, della mia spensieratezza, delle mie "fughe" notturne, di tante serate con le mie amiche...quanti ricordi!
Great song.
i am physically disabled by a car accident 18 years ago since then, music is my support, thanks:-))
I'm sorry to hear of your accident, and yes music does help, and this is such a great song. u take care.
@@brooksideradio thanks friend
I'm so sorry to hear of your accident. Life throws such tests at us. Music holds and lifts us throughout our lives. It's an incredible gift. I couldn't live without music. I send you my very best wishes and good luck for the future.
God bless you Miquel, sending you a hug from London.

Este tema tiene una energía super bonita, me fascina, tiene todo lo que un tema necesita !! El vocalista me encanta ❤❤❤
Totally brilliant. Superb chords, bass line, great singing, great lyrics. One of the best songs to come out of the 80s. Long live Paddy McAloon and Prefab Sprout.
like a breath of fresh air. Very underrated as a group, such a shame.
Its criminal that songs of this ilk are overlooked because they are forever linked to Hot Dog, Jumping Frog, Albuquerque. He wrote so many songs that deserved much wider acclaim. I have followed this band for 40 years now! I'm getting old xD
Profound songwriting by a brillant 80s band.
I'm 52 years old, and I remember "downloading" this song saturday by night from my radio to a 90 min chrome cassette. I waited by weeks until I captured it
That's soo TRUE! ..we did this captures with a lot of patience 😅... amazing how music works more hard in those times ..Great detail ! ..God bless you ✨
@@abbantucobergazo8381 God bless you too! 🤗
C'est parmi un des meilleurs son de pop music des années 80 😍❤💘💛👏👏💙🤩
Brilliant 80s forevet
Music from a better time in a better world.
Pensamos igual
👍🙋♀️
Ain't that the truth.
Cold war era, Thatcher, Chernobyl... And me singing »Hot dog, jumping frog, ..«. Better times? They are blurry...
Era un tiempo mejor sobre todo porque éramos más jóvenes 😸
Good musicians....missing those times...
So many memories. Good times, thanks Paddy❤
Some things cannot be easily squared or understood.
somethings hurt more much more than cars and girls, and i think its time............. Time that hurts the most.
they have another song ''king of rock and roll''
@@patjungle9826 ....their songs do sound too similar though.......i'm more into Depeche Mode, Camouflage, Alphaville, The Cure..........
@@patjungle9826 ...yes, i've stopped listening to almost all new music over last 20 years......still some good music but mostly junk over the last 20 years.....for Camouflage - only listen to their 1st album (that smiling face, pompeiji, music for ballerinas, i once had a dream)
Listen to "When love breaks down" It's one of their best!!
“Life’s no cruise with a cool chick, too many folks feelin’ car sick” love it
what sharp songwriters... amazing lyrics, rhythms and melodies. wow
As a Brother for you to say that; it MUST be GOOD...can l get a witness????
I work in music , festivals, big gigs, Prefab sprout will always be the best band i have ever listened to
I was 12 in 1980.
THAT’S SO APT
Música que hace nacer mariposas en mi estomago... y nostalgia en mi❤!!!
I remember playing this in the car driving through France. beautiful times with beautiful music. thanks Paddy you are a legend
Lyrics :
Brucie dreams, life's a highway
Too many roads bypass my way
Or they never begin
Innocence coming to grief
At the hands of life - stinkin' car thief
That's my concept of sin
Does heaven wait all heavenly
Over the next horizon? Ah!
But look at us now, (Quit driving)
Some things hurt more, much more than Cars and Girls
Just look at us now, (Start counting)
What adds up the way it did when we were young?
Just look at us now, (Quit driving)
Some things hurt more much more than Cars and Girls
Life's a drive through a dust bowl
What's it do, do to a young soul
We are deeply concerned
Someone stops for directions
Something responds deep in our engines
We have all been burned
Will heaven wait all heavenly
Over the next horizon? Ah
But look at us now, (Quit driving)
Some things hurt more, much more than Cars and Girls
Just look at us now, (Start counting)
What adds up the way it did when we were young?
Look at us now, (Quit driving)
Some things hurt more, much more than Cars and Girls
Little boy got a hot rod
Thinks it makes him some kind of new god
Well this is one race he won't win ('Cause life's no cruise-)
'Cause life's no cruise with a cool chick
Too many folks feelin' car sick
But it never pulls in
Brucies thoughts, pretty streamers
Guess this world needs its dreamers
May they never wake up, ok
But look at us now, (Quit driving)
Some things hurt more, much more than Cars and Girls
Just look at us now, (Start counting)
What adds up the way it did when we were young?
Just look at us now, (Quit driving)
Some things hurt more, much more than Cars and Girls
Just look at us now, (Quit driving)
Some things hurt more, much more than Cars and Girls
Look at us now, (Start counting)
What adds up the way it did when we were young?
Look at us now, (Quit driving)
Some things hurt more, much more than Cars and Girls
This song has so many 80ies vibes in it... I was 14 or 15 when it came out. Long live our youth, when we had less and were happier. My friends have gone, separate liferoads, some are gone forever. As long I live I shall carry all those memories of good and bad.
I love this song!!!! Its strange how a "song" brings back those precious memories....only the BEST!!! We being young in the 80's....only know!!!
Paddy McAloon is a great singer-songwriter and this is perfect pop, and it gets even better - believe it or not - when I avoid the distractions of the video. lol
A fantastic band... this is what songwriting and real musical craftsmanship is all about. And Dirk Kuyt on bass!
I got it Arjen!
MegaWeebles with yah!
Arjen Janssen bolo zenden lead vocalist
It’s not Martin McAloon? He’s in the video.
pretty sure dirk kuyt played for liverpool
Like so many great 'older' songs, listen to this in my sixties, and I'm young again. Best thing is, I appreciate them more now..what a time to be alive!
Heard this song on Radio 2 the other day and now I can't stop playing it. My neighbours must think I'm mad!!! Hard to believe this song didn't make the UK Top 40, brilliant song by an underrated 80's band. Paddy McAloon is a genius.
It was a big hit for them in 1988.
What a track! Can't believe it stands upright so fiercely after so much time!
I once was in love with the world. That was about when this song came out! Time has passed, but Prefab Sprout still holds up! What a genius Paddy Mcaloon is (and mind you, he has made a lot of great songs after this one. Still does as a matter of fact!)
Oooffff!!! Once in love with the world… that has happened to me quit a few times and has always included some fantastic music!… like this 👍
A very catchy tune, brings me right back👍
I work with paddy's nephew. Cracking bloke!
@@jez6208 They're a brilliant, very gifted family.
I was born in 1979 and was so lucky to catch all the 1980s and it was such a great time to be a kid..i look at my little 5 year old nephew growing up in this world today and i really fear for what is coming.
I love Prefab Sprout when they're in up-tempo mode....this one "ticks all the boxes" , wonderful song !
Their music is so smooth ...
"Langley Park to Memphis", such an awesome album that I listened to through some of the biggest changes in my life, golden times, testing times with good friends, family and loves. Thank you Paddy and co, Why Aye Man!!!
Pure 80's :) , all persons who came here know the real 80's musics and have great musicals taste, forever 80's/ Disco/ Funk
OOOOOO JESSSSS!!!!
As a 90's kid I must've heard this song a million times on the radio. But because it wasn't a new song the DJ never mentioned the artist. Now decades later I hear a bossa nova version of this song to finally find out who sang it!
How did this not become their first No. 1 hit. It is one of their best! Paddy McAloon, a great writer!
