For moutain roads like that a low revving torquey engine is probably the best instead of a high revving powerful bike

What I love about this bike is the history it has - it captures the essence of motorcycling in Britain in the 60s.
Continental GT is one of the most soothing ride i ever had and also a real head turner. Absolutely in love with both GT650 as well as the GT535(though it’s no longer in production but that rawness that Royal Enfield stands for !!)

I test rode a GT and bought the Interceptor, in my garage is a 2019 1290 Superduke R and a 2020 CBR1000RR-R SP and the bike i like to ride most is the Royal enfield.

A Super Duke 1290, a CBR1000RR and a Royal Enfield and you like the RE best?! Bullsh*t! I have a 1290 R and I test rode the RE. Had I purchased it, I would have been bored with it on my ride home. I ended up with a Triumph Speed Twin. Now my stable includes a VTX1800, a 1290 R, an F4i and a Speed Twin.
Great video, thank you for putting your thoughts out there on the Royal Enfield they are making a name for themselves. Simple motorcycle in an all to complicated world. Riding fast never made any ride better just shorter :)

I've been riding for more than thirty years and worked my way up from a CB350, a Nighthawk 450 and three XS650s all the way to a ZX9R Ninja with 140 hp, a 1400cc Intruder and several heavy BMW K100RS, with about twenty bikes in between. When I bought my first 650 Enduro I rode it for three weeks straight, even though I had bigger and nicer bikes sitting in the garage. I learned what the "fun-factor" is, that a light, 44 hp bike can be more exciting to ride than a bike with a big engine, lots of hp or an expensive-looking badge on the tank.
Like you said, a lighter bike with less power is easier to ride around town and on short trips, even though a superbike is better for the highway and makes a bigger impression at bike meets. Many riders don't realize that less can be more. Or that riding a small bike fast is more fun than riding a big bike slow. And how fast can you really go these days?
My last bike was a CB500R with only 48 hp, nothing special, but a very nice all-round bike and also very economic.
Now, back in Germany, I ride an 18-year-old CB500S I picked up for only 1300 Euro, it has 57 hp and goes 170 km/h, it's light, easy to handle and comfortable - what more do you want!

Most reviewers comment mostly on power and speed. Ergonomics and comfort are very important to me. I wouldn't buy anything smaller than a 650 probably but that is plenty of power so having a bike that is comfortable to me and also my wife on the back sometimes is key. I like that you focus on the good aspects of the bikes you review and deliver your critique in a tactful manner. Very professional.
I bought one of these bikes (it was a demostrator with 1,100km on it). The specs are really good imo i.e. It looks gorgeous, 6 speed sweet gearbox, fuel injected, 4 valves per cylinder, Bosch ABS brakes front and rear, Al rims, clip on bars (actually not very extreme) and rear set foot pegs, electronic fuel gauge (not the best by all accounts but at least it has one), vibration free (near enough, the engine incorporates a balance shaft apparently), nice exhaust note (I like a quiet bike) enhanced by the 270 degree timing that makes it sound a little like a V twin rather than the vertical twin it actually is, very flat torque curve (peak torque at 5,100 rpm but usable from very low rpm). The bike weighs 200kg which is not light. Where does all that weight come from ? Not the spoked aluminium wheels, though the typical lead acid battery does not help nor the silencers (which are really heavy for what they are).
This bike is in a very mild state of tune, I'm sure there is a lot of power that could be unleashed with a high lift camshaft and less restrictive exhaust but I'm happy with the claimed 47.6hp, my efforts will be directed at reducing weight while not increasing noise. There will be a lot of customising bits appearing for this bike.

It looks gorgeous, I don’t care about power but I m bit scared of the weight and high gravity Center to move around city and between cars or maneuver. I should try it and the guzzi v7 too. Thank s a lot for thé review

Henry Masih Not too bad, it’s a pretty upright ride for a cafe-type bike. You’re definitely hunched with the rear sets but it’s not murder. I wouldn’t go for anymore than 100 miles at a time without taking a small break.

I have the same Ventura blue Conti and it never fails to put a smile on my face while I’m riding it. I have a Yamaha 900 GT Tracer which is fine for fast riding and long trips but the RE Conti is best for smaller roads. Great fun and great value for money.

I use the SP Connect Universal Mount. It's really good and is mounted on the handle bar by Velcro. Wouldn't use with a 200hp Nakedbike but with the Royal Enfield it's no problem and doesn't move around.

I have an Interceptor 650, and love it. It does like to run the backroads rather than the interstate (autobahn). I like that it keeps me out of that high speed mode.

Back in India my dad first motorcycle was also Royal Enfield and once I finished my highschool and got my admission in mechanical engineering the first thing I did was bought Royal Enfield for me. And now I live in Ireland and looking forward to get a new RE Continental GT 650 here. RE are just pure raw motorcycles no high tech electronics just simple motorcycle fun to ride.

Hi Juliane, I came across your channel while looking for the latest EICMA news and I am now a fan. Aside from the awesome smile with which you deliver your comments I really like your pragmatic and honest reviews. You hit all the points a rider would look for and the pros and cons and your reviews are nice and concise. Great content, delivery, photography and videography. Kudos on a great job. I love your zest for riding and all the different bikes you test. Would love to see you do reviews of riding gear, practical and useful accessories that are unique to Europe so we have an idea of what might be interesting to us here. Also your favourite riding routes there. I'm in southern Ontario, Canada. 1st bike was a Kawi Vulcan 500, then a Yami Roadstar 1700, then a FJR 1300(which i still have but to be sold)on to a Magna 750, then a BMW R1200C(which I still have) and now a Tracer 900GT all since 2013. I was a rider in my younger days in the 70s.

Thank you Juliane for sharing this review which I only just found. What a gorgeous summer we just had, partially thanks to virtually no aircraft leaving chemtrails in the sky due to the crazy plandemic rules.
The Royal Enfield needs to lose some weigh (a bit like me) and find some 10-15 more HP, then I might consider one myself.
We have some guys here in the UK who have already made these bikes go a lot better. Changing the inlet cam (to S&S from USA), air filter and exhaust helps a lot.
I’m a new subscriber, so am looking forward to more bike reviews from you. I love your honest style.

Your numb right hand, I had the same thing. Once I got 3500 miles (5600km) on the clock the numbness no longer occurs? Possibly the engine smooths, runs in? But definitely something he's happens to make it cease. 😎

Great review Juliane! I have recently bought a retro, a Z900RS Cafe and am really enjoying owning it. I have owned 25+ bikes, done a bit of club racing and off road stuff too and agree with your thoughts about power/speed/enjoyment. Some of the slowest bikes I have owned have been the most fun. Big power does not necessarily equate to fun, certainly on the road anyway. The GT you tested looks great and are great value for money, what's not to like?

I really love the concept of that bike... less electronic, back to the basics. Less price, more fun.
The only thing that I consider to add would be lights, definitively add led lights, and possibly something with the exhaust.

Hi there, I’m from India 🇮🇳 and I’ve been riding for around 19 years now. I’ve ridden Royal Enfield for the past 10 years which includes the Classic, the Standard, the Thunderbird and now I’ve the Interceptor 650. This bike is anything but a running errand or a backyard bike. The time that I’ve spent with this machine, I’ve already done a couple of thousand kilometres and if it was not for the lockdown I would have made a round trip of around 7500 kilometres to the highest motorable way in the world with extreme road and weather conditions. The place is Ladakh and it’s a pilgrimage for all bikers here. I’ve been there few times before and take my word for it that it’s a Bike to run the world around and not just your backyard. Even the suspension is kept on the softer side as you are not going for a race on it. Even then it can do speeds of 120 kmph all day long with a top speed of around 172 kmph stock. So, you can judge from your own experience that you like the bike not only because of it being nimble but it’s powerful enough to do everything that a litre class with high bhp can do and still be cheap to buy and maintain.
Royal Enfield started a fire in the industry with this bike (and the Interceptor version). The price for what you get is quite reasonable. Old school back to basics. Plenty quick for the city. Easy to personalize. There are some absolutely gorgeous custom RE 650s being made by Moto custom Thailand. Indian riders depend on them. Brits are giddy. I want one as my first bike.

Royal Enfield bikes are not for normal people. Its made for Bike enthusiast ❤️. It needs your time and energy which is why it gives you that sense of pride of ownership. No matter where you go people will always take a second gaze on your bike which is really worth. Smooth roads, rough patches or for off roading you don't need to worry. The build quality is so solid that it lasts longer than normal bikes.

@@keloniomannamoinolk7153 obviously, but I'd had my Thruxton for 10 years alongside several RE's and the Triumph was boringly efficient and felt too "Japanese" - the RE's felt much closer in character to my 50's and 60's BSAs and Triumphs. Thanks for your comment 👍🏻
At any day one would like a bike with reliability and not a one where it breaks frequently. So thruxton would still be better option
You would love the Kawasaki W800! Same thing from leaving Triumph (had a Bonnie and Thruxton)
@@shahid28285 I've had 3 Bullets (since 1993)& a Continental GT 535 & never had any breakdowns on any of them...my Thruxton left me stranded more than once because of the poxy factory fitted alarm that drained the (new) battery if left for a couple of nights not on optimate trickle charger...
Not hating on Triumph, I've had dozens (Hinckley and Meriden) since the late 80's and will have more in the future, just think RE's are purer, simpler motorcycled and Triumph can't offer the same authentic riding sensations anymore without the frustrating reliance on technology.

I have an Interceptor and commute to work in summer months, on back roads and it's a great bike. Classic styling gets lots of admiring smiles, interesting discussions - often at red lights! And I know it's not me it's the bike!

How tall are you? What size of people would fit this GT?
I'm 1,95 m, would it fit me? I do ride a vintage Honda CB750 f1 which isn't the tallest of bikes but it fits me well for rides up to 200 km. For a longer trip I prefer a larger bike.

Great Review. I own one, only had 130 Miles on it before it completely die. Took it to my dealership in Fort Myers in Florida to see what’s going on and they got it figured out. Drove back to Miami on it and the day after, I wanted to ride it again but the starter had issue, the battery wasn’t dead but the bike wouldn’t turn on.
I contacted my dealership again, and they told me it’s a known issue for Royal Enfield and they might have a Recall on those Continental GTs
I love my bike, and you right, it looks so beautiful but I don’t get to enjoy riding it and it starts really annoying me.
Hopefully they will figure out a solution .
Reminds me of my days in school, when I drove around on my moped. It could go 65 km/h and it was light, easy to handle, just perfect for everyday use. It was only a moped with 3.7 hp, but I was not as fat in these days...
The only thing I really would have liked to have was ABS. I can't remember how often I fell, because I had to brake on a wet or dirty road, cobblestone pavement or ice and snow (Yes we were young and we were idiots driving thru winter weather).
I've actually just sold my BMW K1200GT and bought myself a RE Classic 500 Desert Storm... kein Schnick Schnack mehr, just pure riding :-)

I like it but I'll wait for the 750 version with maybe 65 or 70 bhp and scrambler styling. I already have a RE Pegasus and am very happy with that, its build quality surprised and impressed me.
Curious to know if you still have the Continental GT and if so, have you done any customisations like you wanted to. Would be really interested in hearing what they would be. I own an Interceptor and have done a few things here and there, but mainly focused on handling rather than looks. Hence the question as ideas are always welcome :).

Well I have had my Intercepter for 5 weeks now and I have put just over 1000 miles on her and loving the ride
I like your taste in bikes. I love the pretty blue color. I’ve been looking at these bikes for years. Currently I ride a Triumph Bonneville Thruxton R. Cafe’ bikes are just cool. Like you say, the fact that it has less power can actually make it more fun at reasonable speeds.
Why do you say not for the autobahn? Top speed is 164 I think? I'm planning to get one for next summer and I live in germany too. Would like to know your opinion ;)
............. and so, what did you think of the slipper clutch ?? did you try some harsh down-shifts to see how well, or not, it works ??
Solche klassischen Maschinen finde ich immer wieder schön! Überlege selbst, mir eins zu kaufen, hatte bisher aber mehr eine Kawasaki W650/800 aufm Schirm, wenn es nicht sogar eine alte MZ wird. Es ist einfach dieses leichte Fahrgefühl, was zum Pendeln und für kurze bis mittlere Strecken nicht nur ausreichend, sondern mega spaßig zu fahren ist.
Ein paar Infos habe ich irgendwie überhört, oder muss ich zur RE noch nachschlagen, wie der Preis, die angepriesene Garantie und die Leistungsklasse. Ist man hier mehr mit 35 oder eher mit 55 Pferdchen unterwegs ... aber das sind auch schon wieder Details, die bei den schönen, kurzen Bericht schon gar nicht mehr wichtig sind...

Wow...growing up in India we always associated Germany with BMW and Mercedes(not exactly bike makers) ..so to be able to get people in Germany excited about made in India wheels that move is really good to see.
(I have lived/worked in Germany for 2 years and have my life long German driving licence...my most prized possession...drove from Frankfurt to Black Forest area...saw Neuscheitien etc ... so I know what life in Germany is like) ... and I think here in India I will sooner or later end up buying one of the REs ... most like the Continental GT...

I sold my BMW and bought a Himalayan. Next on the list is Continental GT. it’s a beautiful cafe racer. New color called Dr Mayhem is an absolute eye catcher. incidentally I stay in close proximity to the manufacturing facility.

Thanks so much. Of course. I love the X-Lite X-803 Ultra Carbon. It's super light weight and looks gorgeous. The wind noises are ok, not too loud. Only complaint from my side is that after a trackday or a long day of riding my eyes turn a little red because of a minor wind stream that goes through. But it's really no big deal and I don't notice while riding. Cheers, Juliane

The GT 650 is designed as a Cafe Racer. That is NOT on an Autobahn, it is through town, from cafe to cafe. For longer distances the Interceptor riding position would be comfier, and they both do over 100 where allowed.

The fuel mileage is awesome too....in the States it's about 70MPG.... converted is 70 mpg = 29.76 km/l. Fun review, love the rockabilly music.

Royal Enfields are not about speed but the overall riding experience. I have a 500cc C5 Bullet Claasic EFI with a Watsonian sidecar. My first outfit. It is the slowest bike I've had since my Puch MV moped when I was 16. However it is a joy to ride. The engine pulls like a little train, the clutch is a delight, it sounds great and I love it. I recently had a good look at the RE 650s at a dealer and threw a leg over an Interceptor. They look beautiful. I turned down a test ride due to awful weather, not having ridden a solo for a long time. I've owned BMWs, a Benelli 354 Sport II and plenty of other bikes but the little RE is one I enjoy at least as much as my other favourites.

I have my new interceptor very impressed with the overall performance quality design and manufacture. When riding I feel this bike rides like a bike that would normally cost twice as much. Nicely presented video well done from Perth Australia. I agree with you about the bikes looks it reminds me of my AJS CSR 650 I had back in the 60s'
