TPAB to me is the greatest but it’s funny because it’s culturally impactful, it’s unique, it’s got everything EXCEPT no one ever really tried to copy it. Like, everyone wanted to be hov or biggie back in the day but Kendrick did his thing and everyone collectively said “ok we can’t even touch that” and moved on which is special in its own way.

MBDTF had that same effect. Who tried to copy it or it’s production techniques? I can see people copying the dropout bear trilogy, 808s, yeezus, and eventually Pablo Ye and JIK, tho nobody has attempted to copy MBDTF.

It definitely wasn't as influential as RTD or Illmatic but TPAB influenced a lot of rappers sounds. Albums like The Divine Feminine, Awaken My Love and The Suns tirade all don't happen without TPAB imo.

GKMC and TPAB can BOTH be deemed the greatest rap albums of all-time. Kendrick has a very rare discography where close to every project ranges from really good to a masterpiece, but only those two albums and in particular TPAB have the criteria of being deemed the best rap album of all-time.

IMO the greatest is TPAB, with Madvillainy, Miseducation, Illmatic, and the Low End Theory as runners-up. While these are all perfect, TPAB tackles social issues in a better way than most, and has one of the craziest concepts ever, with the poem and Mortal Man. Madvillainy and TLET are less impactful, while still perfect listens, and Illmatic/Miseducation are extremely close. TBF there are many classics I am yet to listen too

For me it’s GKMC - The fact it’s a concept album which tells a story all the way through yet it’s still in conversation for greatest rap album of all time is mind blowing 🤯 it’s a movie for your ears which is exactly how an album should be, no skips and every track is amazing
Runners up - 2001 - criminally underrated as I don’t see it in as many conversations as it should be. Captures a perfect time in hip hop and west coast hip hop also this is prime Eminem IMO on the features he’s never spat verses as good sounding as he did on this album, Snoop kills his role too and Nate Dogg ofc
The College Dropout - Again a great concept and movie for your ears and very different to anything else around hip hop in 2003/2004 the chip soul production he debuted in the game was such an amazing new sound and his rapping is some of his best All Falls Down will forever be a banger and Slow Jamz too Twista was getting talked about by everyone at this point shame he didn’t go on and do more
Honourable mentions - TPAB, TMOLH, ATLiens, Reasonable Doubt (Better than The Blueprint IMO and often overlooked), Swimming, Illmatic, Madvillany, Shadows On the Sun (UNDERRATED!)

I feel like its tough to differentiate GREATEST and FAVORITE in this conversations cuz there's always going to be a level of personal bias. With that being said, I could see both of your picks being the greatest on a more objective level. My favorite album of all time (completely subjective) is My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. It's the best curated album of all time (even better than 2001 imo) and shows limitless chemistry. The grand production gives us such a cinematic experience throughout the whole album. An underrated element of this album is the concept. The concept being a cautionary tale about fame and pursuing the "American Dream" told through a mixture of fiction and Kanye's real experiences. Kanye is able to express that despite his success, he still craves priceless things like love and happiness. This is also the perfect redemption album. After people criticized his previous autotune pop-rap direction and the Taylor Swift incident, he needed to prove himself to the world all over again. That's exactly what he did.

There’s just so many. There’s so, so many. You guys named a ton of them, and there’s that many more. Atrocity Exhibition, Piñata, MMLP, DS2, Rodeo, Me Against The World, Nothing Was The Same, Doggystyle, Watching Movies With The Sound Off, you really can’t have that bad of a pick for Best Rap Album. Best and Greatest are 2 different things to me, because Greatest Rap Album comes with more than just the quality of music. When I’m talking about Best Rap Album, I’m talking purely about the quality and consistency of the album, not accolades and sales. I also agree with Luca, my favorite might not even be what I think is the best. My favorite Rap Album just depends on the day.
My Best Rap Album ever has to be either TPAB, Atrocity Exhibition or Ready To Die. I don’t think any of them need explaining, all 3 are the pinnacle of what a Rap Album can/should be.

For me the greatest rap album of all time is Illmatic, because of it's impact on the game and the incredible quality throughout all the songs. That said, it is only my second fav hip-hop album ever. For those wondering about my first - it's what imo is the most underrated debut and hip-hop albums of all time in Food & Liqour by one of the most underrated MCs in Lupe Fiasco.

Man I think it gotta be illmatic. When I was younger I used to think mfs just said it was the best out of respect for the culture but after actually listening to it Illmatic still slaps and I bump it regularly. TPAB is prolly a more impactful listening experience but illmatic is 10/10 rap in its purest form.

Music in the 90’s is very different, because of so many reasons. Gong into a store and purchasing the album face to face with people that love music like you guys do. Waiting in your car for that one song to play, or only having a single to listen to for a couple months, before the album crushed the summer is a very different feeling. Today you guys get it all at once without leaving your home. You don't have to go into NYC TO FIND the remix or mixtape. So when these albums like Illmatic, Reasonable doubt, 36 Chambers, ready to die, my twisted dark fantasy, and Capital Punishment hit the airways it was an exceptionally different experience. I won't even go into the music video. Those things shape a very epic mold for what these albums mean to people.

@@Artyushka I respect it that you have a taste and that you don’t kind emphasizing it’s whether that’s what you like or dislike.
That being said although I understand if you personally don’t think that the album is a favorite of yours I think it’s important for anyone to separate favorites from objectively well executed skill and talent. So subjectively while you might not play it back, objectively mbdtf is again from a production standpoint great and cinematic, sonically and transition wise masterful, and the concept is cohesively consistent throughout. The only aspect of the album you can critique objectively is possibly his approach lyrically but other than that from start to finish I don’t see how anyone can’t say it’s a great album top to bottom especially within his discography even if THAT album isn’t your favorite from him.
We can go through the whole track list if you like.
Now if we go to tpab while it might be considered great for its spoken-word like delivery and it’s live instrumentation infused production, and while the content draws people in,the general consensus is that while it’s considered his best delivered album, it’s not his smoothest listen nor is it undoubtedly the best listening experience hands down. That doesn’t take away from its clear critical acclaim but objectively speaking we can argue that mbdtf is a way more smoother album and is just as dynamic if not more than that of tpab.
Tpab also isn’t the first album of its kind but it is the most recent version of a live instrumentation with poetic lyrically infused social political content. (Goodie mobs first album,Gil Scott heron and the last poets album, the roots, black star, outkast, it takes a nation by public enemy etc). Where an album like mbdtf has never been made before in hip hop history. It’s no album you can compare it to in hip hop. You’d have to compare it to albums outside of it.

TPAB is the most overrated album of all time. Kendrick has no influence and won't stand the test of time like other legends. The production of the album is the best part, and even then it's insanely inconsistent. Add on top of that the most grating voice in hip hop, then make a song like "i", yeah this album is not great. Wesley's Theory is one of the greatest songs of all time, Blacker The Berry, King Kunta and Alright are pretty good, everything else is a complete wash from the album. People tend to use Best and Greatest interchangeably. When you're talking about something being better, you're talking about its superiority. In this case, an album's artistic merits, uniqueness and listening experience would likely be mentioned so this is of course more subjective. Something being greater is more about its notoriety and more objective. This would pertain to an album's accomplishments such as critical acclaim, commercial success, accolades and cultural impact. This can be looked at as more objective because this is more evidence based and measured in terms of the genre, industry and popular culture.

But if someone pointed a gun at my head I’m putting My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy into the greatest album category. There hasn’t been a single album that can come close besides TPAB. However monumental feat’s like these only come once in a decade. The production, writing, work, story of Ye summoning artists to his whim in Hawaii and etc is incredible has been unmatched. Devils in a new dress could make a man crumble to pieces. Ye crafted a piece of art that’s the Mona Lisa of music and with the condo painting, proves just that.

i hate when this conversation is brought up and everyone brings up personal bias. everyone will have personal bias. it’s art. people confuse all time favorite with objectivity. if it was objective there would be a right and wrong answer, and we would not need to have a discussion. but since it is completely subjective, we are able to have this conversation. with that being said, i do see how people can confuse all time favorite with objectivity, because they’re thinking of their current favorite album, and since that current favorite doesn’t touch their all time favorite, they assume its some sort of objectivity, which is false.
