  • @space_orphan
    @space_orphan Год назад +4

    Pretty good analysis, but my biggest issue with this video is lack of consistency with the metrics they use for measuring GOAT status. (Disclaimer: I may be SLIGHTLY biased towards Kendrick)
    For example, when comparing Kendrick to Jay-Z, they give points to Jay-Z for longevity, but then they throw that out the window when comparing Jay-Z to Andre 3k. At this point in history, Kendrick has just as many classics and just as much consistency than Andre 3k ever did (and I'm saying this as a MASSIVE Andre 3k fan). And what about comparing Andre 3k to Biggie? Obviously Biggie's career was cut short, but if you're going to give the win to Jay-Z over Kendrick for longevity, how could you NOT do the same when comparing Andre 3k to Biggie and give the win to Andre 3k? You could argue that Biggie's albums might by SLIGHTLY better than Andre's best, but it would be a really close call, and Andre has 4 classic albums IMO (ATLiens, Aquemini, Stankonia and The Love Below). For me, that consistency easily puts Andre 3K above Biggie. Now, look at Kendrick: Kendrick has put up classic after classic, not a single miss since section.80. Yeah, Biggie had 2 amazing albums and his career was cut short, but I would argue that Kendrick's best 2 albums are better than those (In my opinion, TPAB > Ready to Die, and GKMC > Life after Death, and the NFR podcasters actually agree with me on that if you look at their top 10 albums of all time list), AND Kendrick has 4 more great albums to back him up (secion.80, untitled unmastered, DAMN, Mr. Morale). Kendrick has proven that he not only has longevity, BUT ALSO insane consistency. Anyone who needs more convincing that Biggie shouldn't be a contender should check out HipHopDX's video "Biggie Ain't The GOAT", he puts it better than I ever could.
    I also think it's absolutely INSANE to say that anyone other than Kendrick has the most versatility. IMO Kendrick has BY FAR the most versatility of any rapper, ever. Period. I don't see how there could be any debate about that fact. Kendrick has more versatility on one track than most rappers have over their entire catalogue (ex: "N95", "family ties", "untitled 02", "Swimming Pools", "Black Friday", and even his live performances like "untitled 03" on Stephen Colbert's show). Then you factor in his crazy variance in the rest of his catalogue, like "These Walls" to "We Cry Together" to "u" to "i" to "Alright" to "untitled 06" to "DNA" to "untitled 08" to "Backseat Freestyle" to "m.a.a.d. city" to "Sing About Me I'm Dying of Thirst" to "Mr. Morale" to "Silent Hill", and on, and on, and on.... No competition.
    Finally, if you include content/message, again, Kendrick is absolutely untouchable. I can understand if you're not going to include this as a metric for "best rapper" cause maybe you're just looking at technical ability, but I think it really SHOULD be included.
    IMO the ONLY knock against Kendrick's GOAT status is his mediocre singles Billboard performance. As of July 2023, "Humble" is his only single to top the Billboard charts, and did so for only 1 week. Besides that one track, Kendrick's Billboard performance is pretty abysmal, with his second best performance being "Swimming Pools", which peaked at #17. Compare this to Biggie, who had 2 chart topping singles, 5 that cracked the top 10, and 7 that reached higher than "Swimming Pools". HOWEVER, Nas, who these guys are calling the GOAT, has struggled on the Billboard charts arguably EVEN MORE than Kendrick, so this must mean that this metric isn't actually very important for GOAT status (at least for the NFR Podcasters). Nas' 3 best performing singles are "I Can", which peaked at #12, "Street Dreams", which peaked at #22, and "Made You Look", which peaked at #32.
    Kendrick is the GOAT.

I think his discography is so consistently great and has so many genre bending songs/albums, most artists in any genre can’t really compare. But in terms of who is the best rapper, in technicality and skill(while also considering bodies of work and consistency) I would probably go with Jay-Z. Nas has always had the same style from when he opened his mouth as a teenager, and he inspired all these other guys.
