Huberman's Low Back Pain Advice is TERRIBLE (pt. 2)

  • Andrew Huberman tried to give advice about low back pain. It was terrible. We debunked Huberman Lab's low back pain protocol episode to save you the trouble of watching it.
    .
    If you have low back pain, disc degeneration, disc herniations, disc bulges, SI Joint Pain, or sciatica, you need to understand the evidence about how to heal, and what to avoid.
    .
    Unfortunately the treatment and exercise advice Huberman gives for low back pain and sciatica are not evidence based. He relies on outdated myths, so we mythbusted and fact-checked his horrible low back pain advice.
    .
    This episode debunks the McGill Big Three exercises for low back pain and sciatica, from Dr. Stu McGill, and discusses the best physical therapy exercises for back pain and sciatica.

    My opinion is that when you herniate your disc pain is actually guiding your movement. Same as when you place your hand above fire offcourse when ylu feel pain sensation ylu are going to move your hand. So spine hyegine what Mcgill is proposing is natural way of avoiding pain when in acute pain. But after when you start feeling better more movement is allowed and should be used not to be afraid. That is way many people have good results afyer reading Sarno's book. Once they get rid of fear of movement they get rid of pain. So I think follow Mcgill method for a month max after injury and then relax, stop thinking about your disc, stop searching on internet, pain is your natural guidance anyways what you can do at certain time ect, almost similar to dealing with anxiety. Less overthinking

    I see that your a doctor of Chiropractic. What are your thoughts on the ring dinger and it's effectiveness for back issues? Can it be helpful or harmful or does it depend on the individual and the issues they are having? Would like to hear your perspective. Also do you still do adjustments still or do you mainly focus on movement based exercises or both?

    • @ShapeshiftWellness
      @ShapeshiftWellness  Месяц назад +1

      Hey! The ring dinger makes most of us very angry. It's wreckless, and being used to exploit patients for views. Even the chiros I know who are really into giving adjustments absolutely hate those guys and the technique. It's extreme. Personally I rarely see patients in person, because even my local patients work with me more through a hybrid model where I write their exercise, stress reduction, nutrition, and sleep programs in an app, do video calls, chat support, and give them a deep-dive educational course. Yes, I do adjust patients, but it's just a cherry on top for locals. Not necessary, just nice.

      Bingo! Yea the whole idea of him taking a 2hr podcast to give "protocols" but really he just gives a set of specific exercises, is ridiculous. What people actually need protocols on is how to know the difference between "safe pain" and "unsafe pain," and to know how to choose exercises that are challenging but not impossible, that don't lead to a flare up... Oh - and to know when something has gotten too easy, and it's time to progress. These are principles that truly matter.

    • @ShapeshiftWellness
      @ShapeshiftWellness  6 дней назад

      @@TheGarethsadow Most research on running and joint health shows that we want to find a recreational amount of running for the best health of our joints. Avoiding running might actually lead to worse joint health. Likewise, being ultra-competitive and running extreme amounts (off the top of my head I think we're talking 50-60+ miles/week long term) also leads to worse joint health and accelerated degeneration. So recreational running seems to be great, as long as we ease into it while respecting symptoms.

    I'm not really sure what the dynamic disc model exactly means, but the idea that the disc just slips out is of course wrong. But how exactly do discs behave during flexion, extension and lateral flexion? When some areas of the vertebrae move closer to each in during movement then obviously the disc between has to experience more pressure, no? But then other areas of vertebrae move apart from each other so the total pressure doesn't change all that much, right? Or am I missing some unique cartilage properties?

    • @ShapeshiftWellness
      @ShapeshiftWellness  Месяц назад

      Yes of course there's movement, but it's not as predictable as we used to think. Bottom line it that discs are not like water balloons, and we can't just demonize a certain direction of movement.

    Hey Mate love your content!! Got a herniated disc and suffer from sciatica since 4 months. it was really bad but now it got much better. the radiation down to my calf is almost gone and the pain is now more centered which i heard is a good thing. the pain is now in my lower back and goes down into my butt at most after long sitting or getting up in the morning. i tried may things during this time like hanging from the bar the raising dog position several times a day but at the end i figured what made it better was doing non of this and just stay active, lots of walking keep exercising etc.. It almost felt if the other stuff made it worse. however now i wonder since it moved into the center is that a sign that i need to maybe start doing these things to get into the next stage and eventually get rid of it completely or should i just keep doing what im doing and hoping for it to go away completely. Would appreciate your advice! Thanks in advance! Keep it up!

    I'm glad you at least agree that exercise is the #1 most important treatment for back pain. The hard part is figuring out which exercises will work best since everyone has different physiology and pain triggers. You have to piece everything together from many resources. Even research is often conflicting.

    • @ShapeshiftWellness
      @ShapeshiftWellness  13 дней назад

      Bingo. The main issue I have with Huberman's review, and with most back pain channels is they give off the impression that the solution to chronic pain is just ONE exercise away! That you just need to find that ONE magic exercise and everything will be fine! Real rehab is trial and error, and it's slow and steady. It's also very multifactorial so although exercise is king, we also need to manage other lifestyle factors.

    Getting a surgery for joints almost always get you worse. This is how crazy it is about the medical industry. The fact that getting a diagnosis from a proper physician and an MRI, actually make you far more likely to experience worse results..... and getting a surgery makes that much worse.... That's a very big red flag for the medical industry. That's part of the reason why people go to alternatives.

    • @ShapeshiftWellness

      @kchuen Месяц назад

      I thought maybe at times you were picking on Huberman too much in part 1. But in part 2, what you said are absolutely true and in line with my personal experience. I had back pain for years and all the doctors, sports and pain specialist doctors, physiotherapists, chiropractors, chinese medicine doctors, chinese massage therapists, Western stretch therapists. etc, overall at least 20 different professionals, didn't do much. Some of the massage therapists gave me the most relief.
      But at the end of the day, working on the joints at their comfort levels, ie regressions of strength training was the most effective method. Fascia release, either by a therapist or a hard enough and small enough wooden massage ball (none of that lacross or tennis ball soft stuff) were good at releasing the tension and allow more range of motion for me to work on (mostly temporary if you don't bring awareness t the ROM and exercise the range). Then working on the range (especially the stretched position) of alll the muscles around the hip by PNF, active stretches, awareness based movements, isometric, weighted stretches, etc. And do them in both isolation and as a group. Involving the hip together, and then the whole body together. It's only when I managed to gain the strength and stability, the pain slowly subsided. And it was a lot of work. I had to work my hip flexors, QL, TFL, hamstrings, abductors and adductors, the lower spinal errectors, the core, the diaphragm, the whole spine, the shoulder joints, the lower legs and the feet, etc, individually and then as groups. It's been a very long and tough but rewarding journey.
      So I totally agree with what you say in this video and I wish access to actual knowledgeable professionals like you are more readily available. Most doctors and heathcare professionals only care if you can walk or move in my city. They don't understand people like me who wants more, who want an actual athletic body that can be strong and agile and do sports.
      And I also can't believe Huberman bought into this bullshit of bracing your core and stuff for lower back pain... But then again, he has had podcasts episodes which I strongly disagree with before. He also invited some very suspect guests like AXXlean-X. So.... well I guess we should all do our own research.
