  • Andrew Huberman tried to give advice about low back pain. It was terrible. We debunked Huberman Lab's low back pain protocol episode to save you the trouble of watching it.
    .
    If you have low back pain, disc degeneration, disc herniations, disc bulges, SI Joint Pain, or sciatica, you need to understand the evidence about how to heal, and what to avoid.
    .
    Unfortunately the treatment and exercise advice Huberman gives for low back pain and sciatica are not evidence based. He relies on outdated myths, so we mythbusted and fact-checked his horrible low back pain advice.

    Had some severe SI joint pain and my doctor ordered a MRI for me. I had no back pain at the time of the MRI, just really bad SI pain. After I got the MRI, the nurse told me I had some bulging and herniation and all of the sudden my lower back started hurting…..crazy how the brain works.

      People get those images stuck in their heads and start to get fearful and overprotective. Then I have to do the heavy lifting of trying to help people forget entirely about the MRI findings and start moving! It's frustrating for everyone involved.

    I wish I found you before my two microdiscectomies. My situation is a classic example of your points. I had no nerve pain prior to the first surgery, though I couldn’t articulate that at the time. It was searing low back pain that severely limited my life. After surgery, same pain, plus real nerve pain in my foot. Now I know the difference and watching your videos and masterclass has completely changed my mindset. I’m trying to let go of the surgery regret and relearn everything I thought I knew. When they told me a few weeks ago that my disc was gone and I need a fusion, I said to myself there has got to be another way. That’s when you popped up on my RUclips. You have changed my life in a short time!! Thank you!!!

      It's never too late to start healing! What's done is done, but the body has a remarkable ability to adapt and become stronger over time. Hope I can help you on that journey!

      I had one microdiscectomy back in April and have since reherniated but I’m opting to try to heal this second one on my own. I don’t regret the first surgery because I was only getting worse and worse and was starting to get drop foot but had zero back pain. Now, I honestly still don’t have much pain, I just know what the MRI said and it psyched me out badly. This channel is helping me get through it.

    I'm a 26 year old female from India and I herniated my disc at L4-5 7 months ago. I spent months on outdated practices by my very qualified clinicians (doctors, spine specialists, and PTs) including a 4 week bed rest, oral steriods, pregabalin for months. I have been a dancer all my life and had to grieve the loss of dance from my life through these months, the fear so intense and not knowing what life would look like over the coming year (i had move cities to start a new job) totally wrecked my mental health. Couldn't start with the new job, had to quit the last one because my mental (not physical) health rendered me completely incapacitated, soaring anxiety and depression, not to mention the brain fog from the tonne of medications. I found you recently and you single-handedly make me feel calmer than any of my clinicians. Thank you! I would be so so obliged to train with you!

    So glad I discovered your content! I'm suffering from pain down the leg plus the occasional low back pain for 6 years. I've been to so many physios, neurologists, orthopedic doctors, chiropractors... My main problem is that when I work on strengthening it aggravates the pain down the leg. Hence stuck in a loop.

    😊 great job. Loved that well I'm baffled about my own experience I had an MRI in September it showed two disc herniations and two bulging discs because I was in discomfort experiencing burning across my back and tightness and I am very active flexible person well after 3 months in physical therapy the pain went away I was so happy but just two weeks after that I tried a new chiropractor just to get a massage and slight mobilization I showed him my MRI I told him I was just getting out of pain and the stupid chiropractor gives me an adjustment that was too much for my spine and I left there with burning again this all happened January 11th I was so angry fearful that I was back to square one I went back to physical therapy for 3 months but did not help I'm still experiencing burning and tightness I was afraid to move my spine maybe that's why it's so tight I'm starting to move it more but I'm still experiencing burning and I do not know why . Can it be my disks are still healing from the herniations is that why I'm having the burning?

I KNEW you'd have a thing or two to say about his video, and I'm here for it. Knowing what a stickler you are for supporting your content with peer-reviewed studies, I knew EXACTLY where this reaction video was going, and I wasn't disappointed!

    Great video. I really want Huberman to be a good source of information, but he clearly doesn’t do research. This is really frustrating because he has one of the top 10 podcasts in the world. He can afford to either put out less content so he has time to research or he could hire an army of writers and fact checkers.

      Dude. Tell me about it. I can't believe that 30min into the podcast he hasn't cited, or even MENTIONED a single piece of research. It's downright irresponsible. Also, I was REALLY hoping that as a neuroscientist he would talk in depth about the neurochemistry of pain! That would have been so cool to have him explain central sensitization, descending inhibitory pathways, and all that fun stuff. THAT would be worth watching! What a waste.

    Nerve compression is a very common cause of back pain…go and ask any orthopaedic surgeon or neurosurgeon. Not sure what kind of Doctor you are but I have a feeling less qualified than those specialists.

    • @ShapeshiftWellness
      @ShapeshiftWellness  9 дней назад

      Take it up with the dozens of peer reviewed studies I cited in this series 🤷‍♂️ Many people confuse “radiculopathy” (nerve compression pain) with what we call “somatic referred pain” in the literature, which FEELS like nerve pain because it radiates or travels, but it is NOT caused by a compressed nerve. True nerve compression is rare. Nerve compression is called a “radiculopathy” and in the scientific literature we classify this as a “specific” cause of pain, meaning we can with confidence identify a structure that is causing the pain. However, most studies show that well over 90% of back pain cases are “non-specific,” meaning we CANNOT blame a single structure for the pain. In other words, well over 90% of back pain cases are NOT cause by nerve compression. Here’s a peer reviewed guideline from one of the most well respected scientific journals on the planet (The Lancet), as my source for this information: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27745712/

    • @dcs4880
      @dcs4880 9 дней назад

      @@ShapeshiftWellness Yeah that's one peer reviewed study - how about you walk into 30 spine surgeons offices and ask them if nerve compression is a common cause of back pain. What do you think they will say? Are you qualified to do spine surgery on someone? No.

    • @dcs4880
      @dcs4880 9 дней назад

      @@ShapeshiftWellness You logic is also so flawed. "However, most studies show that well over 90% of back pain cases are “non-specific,” meaning we CANNOT blame a single structure for the pain. In other words, well over 90% of back pain cases are NOT cause by nerve compression"...that makes no sense at all - you just said it's non specific, which means you don't know whats causing it, which means it could be 80% from nerve compression for all you know.

    • @ShapeshiftWellness
      @ShapeshiftWellness  9 дней назад

      @@dcs4880 Tell me you don’t know anything about scientific research without telling me you don’t know anything about research. 🤦‍♂️ Non specific means it’s NOT nerve compression. As for your banal comment about asking a spine surgeon, I’ll remind you of two things: 1) Anecdotal evidence is not evidence. 2) Ask a hammer, and everything is a nail.
      Lastly, I cited dozens of studies. Your inability to read and understand the research is not an argument against the research.

    • @dcs4880
      @dcs4880 8 дней назад

      @@ShapeshiftWellness umm no it doesn’t - non-specific means not detailed or exact. Nerve pain 100% can be non-specific, nerve pain can be referred. Your ask a hammer example works equally as well with you…look how myopic you are in your views. Are you suggesting surgeons, who literally do spine surgery…don’t read (and write) any studies? I would wager your average spine surgeon has read more about the spine than you ever have or ever will. Remember that.
