- Andrew Huberman tried to give advice about low back pain. It was terrible. We debunked Huberman Lab's low back pain protocol episode to save you the trouble of watching it.
.
If you have low back pain, disc degeneration, disc herniations, disc bulges, SI Joint Pain, or sciatica, you need to understand the evidence about how to heal, and what to avoid.
.
Unfortunately the treatment and exercise advice Huberman gives for low back pain and sciatica are not evidence based. He relies on outdated myths, so we mythbusted and fact-checked his horrible low back pain advice.

Had some severe SI joint pain and my doctor ordered a MRI for me. I had no back pain at the time of the MRI, just really bad SI pain. After I got the MRI, the nurse told me I had some bulging and herniation and all of the sudden my lower back started hurting…..crazy how the brain works.
The brain is amazing but it can also be a jerk 😅
People get those images stuck in their heads and start to get fearful and overprotective. Then I have to do the heavy lifting of trying to help people forget entirely about the MRI findings and start moving! It's frustrating for everyone involved.
I wish I found you before my two microdiscectomies. My situation is a classic example of your points. I had no nerve pain prior to the first surgery, though I couldn’t articulate that at the time. It was searing low back pain that severely limited my life. After surgery, same pain, plus real nerve pain in my foot. Now I know the difference and watching your videos and masterclass has completely changed my mindset. I’m trying to let go of the surgery regret and relearn everything I thought I knew. When they told me a few weeks ago that my disc was gone and I need a fusion, I said to myself there has got to be another way. That’s when you popped up on my RUclips. You have changed my life in a short time!! Thank you!!!
It's never too late to start healing! What's done is done, but the body has a remarkable ability to adapt and become stronger over time. Hope I can help you on that journey!
I had one microdiscectomy back in April and have since reherniated but I’m opting to try to heal this second one on my own. I don’t regret the first surgery because I was only getting worse and worse and was starting to get drop foot but had zero back pain. Now, I honestly still don’t have much pain, I just know what the MRI said and it psyched me out badly. This channel is helping me get through it.
Which exercises I can do for low back pain plzz guide me

I'm so happy I found your page/newsletter. I've been dealing with chronic back pain for several years and had a surgery last year. It really seems like the solution is getting stronger, which is also something I've been working on ALOT this year
I absolutely love that your channel found me. You make this so digestible and applicable to my work as an OT.
So what do you recommend for back pain. Im getting mri next week. Been dealing with lower back sciatica in back and butt for 5 weeks.... its a tad better but still hurts to sit.
Watch this video about getting an MRI. You need to know this information: ruclips.net/video/DpORyoX0aF4/видео.html
I'm a 26 year old female from India and I herniated my disc at L4-5 7 months ago. I spent months on outdated practices by my very qualified clinicians (doctors, spine specialists, and PTs) including a 4 week bed rest, oral steriods, pregabalin for months. I have been a dancer all my life and had to grieve the loss of dance from my life through these months, the fear so intense and not knowing what life would look like over the coming year (i had move cities to start a new job) totally wrecked my mental health. Couldn't start with the new job, had to quit the last one because my mental (not physical) health rendered me completely incapacitated, soaring anxiety and depression, not to mention the brain fog from the tonne of medications. I found you recently and you single-handedly make me feel calmer than any of my clinicians. Thank you! I would be so so obliged to train with you!
So glad I discovered your content! I'm suffering from pain down the leg plus the occasional low back pain for 6 years. I've been to so many physios, neurologists, orthopedic doctors, chiropractors... My main problem is that when I work on strengthening it aggravates the pain down the leg. Hence stuck in a loop.
Anthony’s content is great!
Heyy just found you out, loving the videos so far. i wanted to ask u about ur opinion on Dr Stu McGill and the back mechanic. i am currently reading it. Honestly i love ur take on back issues
The next part of Huberman’s podcast is almost all McGill stuff. So, Anthony’s next video should cover that 👍
Welcome aboard! The next episode, releasing tomorrow, covers some of that. In the meantime, this episode on posture debunks a lot of the McGill fear mongering around bending the spine: ruclips.net/video/ANLlkDaWTY4/видео.html
Great video 👍🏻My problem is the fear of bending forward as this seems to be when a nerve is pinched ( I assume) then the muscles tighten. Find bending backwards helps and yes movement. Main problem is putting socks & shoes on . How do I move forward with the mental issues? Many thanks 🙏🏻
You're welcome! Fear of pain is more disabling than pain itself. Watch this video first, then watch the masterclass for a full breakdown: ruclips.net/video/7MWEIp9TGvU/видео.html
Really enjoyed this video!! Enjoyed the way you respectfully debunked Huberman's claims. You continuously present research that focuses on the facts! I appreciate the time you put into producing scientific and entertaining content
Thanks a ton Joanna! More to come!
Thank you for the information. I have L4-L5 disc herniation impinging the nerve L5 per MRI report. What is the solution for this? It has been 4 months now
This is the most entertainment I've enjoyed all week! A few friendly shots at the illustrious and sincere Professor Huberman won't hurt him. Two of my favorite smart guys but I definitely know who I would go to for back rehab! Thanks Doctor Anthony!
😊 great job. Loved that well I'm baffled about my own experience I had an MRI in September it showed two disc herniations and two bulging discs because I was in discomfort experiencing burning across my back and tightness and I am very active flexible person well after 3 months in physical therapy the pain went away I was so happy but just two weeks after that I tried a new chiropractor just to get a massage and slight mobilization I showed him my MRI I told him I was just getting out of pain and the stupid chiropractor gives me an adjustment that was too much for my spine and I left there with burning again this all happened January 11th I was so angry fearful that I was back to square one I went back to physical therapy for 3 months but did not help I'm still experiencing burning and tightness I was afraid to move my spine maybe that's why it's so tight I'm starting to move it more but I'm still experiencing burning and I do not know why . Can it be my disks are still healing from the herniations is that why I'm having the burning?
I learned so much here. Thank you!!
It’s a great video, I’m excited for part 2
Glad it was helpful!
I love when "experts" in other fields start making assumptions and broadcasting their uninformed opinions as facts, or as you said, just blatantly "makes shit up". I KNEW you'd have a thing or two to say about his video, and I'm here for it. Knowing what a stickler you are for supporting your content with peer-reviewed studies, I knew EXACTLY where this reaction video was going, and I wasn't disappointed!
PS. Huberman ALWAYS repeats himself ad nauseam, so I died laughing when you pointed out the discs with holes, reworded FIVE TIMES in the first 5 minutes. 🤣
It’s crazy that a PhD with so much money doesn’t have a team to actually research what he is putting out. Really disappointing
And yes, Huberman made an absolute goose out of himself in this video lol
Ya, it’s a tough look
This was painful to watch. I used to like Huberman, until I heard him speak about something I'm an expert in, and now I question everything he says about any topic.
Yeah I never got the core braced at all times bs, squatu also does that. Didnt surprise me he also mentioned Uncle Stu lol
Good old Uncle Stu. Any answer that requires you to permanently adopt a certain unnatural position (bracing and staying neutral all day is not natural at all) is bound to fail. People need to move.
Pretty sure this is the guy who had back pain and took Dr. Grant Eliots program. It's called Rehab Fix. Have you heard of this and if his program is effective? Dr. Grant talks about centralization for his specific rehad.
Grant literally gave him McKenzie back extensions, which are the most bottom-of-the-barrel basic cookie cutter PT exercise in the world, and Huberman acted like it blew his mind.
@@ShapeshiftWellness Yes haha. I listen to a bunch of different people who say there program will get you out of back pain. Heard as well that this specific exercise can cause damage to the faucet joints. Again I'm not the expert just what I heard from the pros in helping back pain.
Great video. I really want Huberman to be a good source of information, but he clearly doesn’t do research. This is really frustrating because he has one of the top 10 podcasts in the world. He can afford to either put out less content so he has time to research or he could hire an army of writers and fact checkers.
Dude. Tell me about it. I can't believe that 30min into the podcast he hasn't cited, or even MENTIONED a single piece of research. It's downright irresponsible. Also, I was REALLY hoping that as a neuroscientist he would talk in depth about the neurochemistry of pain! That would have been so cool to have him explain central sensitization, descending inhibitory pathways, and all that fun stuff. THAT would be worth watching! What a waste.
Ahhh so disappointed in Huberman. Thank you for the fact check
That's what I'm here for!
I learned a whole bunch thank you
Glad to hear it! Part 2 is coming up soon!
6 times repeating is very few for Huberman 🙃, that’s his technique making his podcast longer. Most of the times he can cover everything he says in 2 hours in 5 minutes
lol 😂 His podcast could have been 20min. Easy. Watching it was exhausting.
Nerve compression is a very common cause of back pain…go and ask any orthopaedic surgeon or neurosurgeon. Not sure what kind of Doctor you are but I have a feeling less qualified than those specialists.
Take it up with the dozens of peer reviewed studies I cited in this series 🤷♂️ Many people confuse “radiculopathy” (nerve compression pain) with what we call “somatic referred pain” in the literature, which FEELS like nerve pain because it radiates or travels, but it is NOT caused by a compressed nerve. True nerve compression is rare. Nerve compression is called a “radiculopathy” and in the scientific literature we classify this as a “specific” cause of pain, meaning we can with confidence identify a structure that is causing the pain. However, most studies show that well over 90% of back pain cases are “non-specific,” meaning we CANNOT blame a single structure for the pain. In other words, well over 90% of back pain cases are NOT cause by nerve compression. Here’s a peer reviewed guideline from one of the most well respected scientific journals on the planet (The Lancet), as my source for this information: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/27745712/
@@ShapeshiftWellness Yeah that's one peer reviewed study - how about you walk into 30 spine surgeons offices and ask them if nerve compression is a common cause of back pain. What do you think they will say? Are you qualified to do spine surgery on someone? No.
@@ShapeshiftWellness You logic is also so flawed. "However, most studies show that well over 90% of back pain cases are “non-specific,” meaning we CANNOT blame a single structure for the pain. In other words, well over 90% of back pain cases are NOT cause by nerve compression"...that makes no sense at all - you just said it's non specific, which means you don't know whats causing it, which means it could be 80% from nerve compression for all you know.
@@dcs4880 Tell me you don’t know anything about scientific research without telling me you don’t know anything about research. 🤦♂️ Non specific means it’s NOT nerve compression. As for your banal comment about asking a spine surgeon, I’ll remind you of two things: 1) Anecdotal evidence is not evidence. 2) Ask a hammer, and everything is a nail.
Lastly, I cited dozens of studies. Your inability to read and understand the research is not an argument against the research.
@@ShapeshiftWellness umm no it doesn’t - non-specific means not detailed or exact. Nerve pain 100% can be non-specific, nerve pain can be referred. Your ask a hammer example works equally as well with you…look how myopic you are in your views. Are you suggesting surgeons, who literally do spine surgery…don’t read (and write) any studies? I would wager your average spine surgeon has read more about the spine than you ever have or ever will. Remember that.
I wanted to continue listening to your medical advice, but I couldn’t take your cloutchasing condescending tone for longer than 5m
Keep listening to the bullshit and stay in pain. I also see you’re subscribed to Andrew so that explains everything lol
Cool, if tone is more important than research, you've got a tough road ahead of you my friend 🤷
