Vaan started out as a vengeful kid who wanted to make the Arcadians pay. Along the journey, he realizes that it's just his excuse to not accept his brother's death. This realization helps Ashe to refuse the power of Sun-cryst at the end. You call that non-existing development?
I was told years ago by a friend that Vaan was some OC forced onto the team by someone high up (guess a young blonde protag for a younger demo or some other focus group nonsense), and they included him, but made him a non-entity. No idea if anywhere near true, but that's the kind of petty I can respect. Balthier is the best.
Thats half the truth actually. The original writer and director left the project for health reasons partway through development and his initial draft had Basch as the "protagonist" or rather character from whose perspective you experience the story. This however did not resonate with the newly assigned writer who then went on to bring in Vaan for the exact reason you mentioned . That guy had previously co-written FF10 and Kingdom Hearts so that type of character is a reoccurring theme in his works.
So, none of this is actually true and is a rumor that's been getting passed around since the game's release on the PS2. Vaan was meant to be a part of this story from the beginning of production. While it's true the director did leave late in development (and it really shows towards the end of the game) they didn't just randomly add a new protagonist after that. Vaan was the primary playable character all along.
Now *before* production started it is true that the team behind FFXII wanted to tell a story featuring an older protagonist in his late 20s or early 30s (Basch perhaps) that didn't make it past the planning stages.
Balthier was the best character in the game but I actually think Basch was supposed to be the lead character until they decided to go in a different direction.
I still think fran and balthier should been the main characters. Vaan and penelo to me didnt seem to bring anything and story would most likely been the same without them.
I know what you mean, but I think that´s what makes this scene so good. The fact that "most of us" already consider Balthier as the main character. Fran jokes about him having a supporting role here when Balthier talks of himself as the leading man, and they are both right I guess. I really like this and it feels like they are breaking the fourth wall here, or at least touching it. When you think about it, the only reason Vaan is considered the main character is because we play him first, not counting his brother ofc. The main character(s) for me is the one(s) driving the story, and Balthier does exactly that.
That's the thing, FFXII doesn't have a main character, it's an ensemble cast like VI, they're all 'main characters' in a sense as the story is about their journey and growth together. Vaan is just the point of view character, the fish out of water that's supposed to be our player avatar.
@@leilavega-thompson4483 Very interesting way you put it and I agree. But they still should've done more in terms of development for Vaan and Penelo (though honestly all characters could be developed a bit more).
Balthier and gang reappeared in an FF12 DS that featured vaan is the proper main character. As for the game itself, well, it's so-so. The story is also so-so.
True but that doesn’t change the fact that both Noctis and Clive end up dying in their own games. And in 16, Jill, Clive’s girlfriend, is heart broken over his death.
"I'd say you're in more of a supporting role." ☠️
"Fran please."
God, he's the coolest character ever.
he is the leading man, so is the coolest by default.
The real main character of FF12.
Ashe and Larsa

He really is the leading man. Effectively the smartest of everyone and always has a plan, Balthier is a G, no doubts there.
"Fran, please!" Such sass! I love Balthier! 🤣🤣😂
by far ... love that quip
Well, considering the basically non-existing development of Vaan and Penelo's characters, I'd say Balthier _really_ is the leading man in this game.
Nah, it's Ashe who is the protagonist. Just a fact
Sure Vaan isn’t super fleshed out, but he actually has the most growth of anyone else in the game lol
@@frozendevil9549 Just because he's started as a nobody. lol Everyone has their own place since the beginning, but not him.
@@VitchAndVorty Vaan started out as a nobody, and ended a slightly more worldly nobody.

I think when Vaan said the last line, it really reminds me how much faith the crew had in Balthier
2006- Balthier: I play the leading man who else?
2021- Yuffie: But dont forget: im the leading lady
"Fran, please." Like a boss.
Finally I can watch my favorite part of the ending by itself
a legend
like they said, legend never dies
Should've been MC. What a game that would have been.
