Space Saving Vertical Shop Vac Cyclone Separator for the Shop

  • For those of you that have been following the channel for a long time know that I have never been happy with the state of the shop vac, cyclone, shop vac hose and attachment situation. The shop vac is a necessity in the shop but it simply took up too much room, cyclone tipped over all the time and it took too long to wind the hose back up again when finished cleaning.
    Time for a solution! A vertical shop vac / Cyclone / hose reel put all the cleaning equipment in the same footprint of the shop vac opening up space and making the overall use of the system much faster. The system consists of a 5 3/4 HP shop vac, Clear Vue Mini CV-06 cyclone and a Rockler Dust Right hose real with 40' of 1 1/2" shop vac hose. Now I can fire up the shop vac with a remote switch, unwind the hose and clean ALL corners of the shop and quickly wind it back up again.

      Tyler G you should have mounted it on the adjacent wall so the hose reels off in the direction you are most likely to be pulling it. Now you have to walk over to reel to pull more hose off the reel instead of just pulling on the hose where you are actually using it.

    I have a similar setup in my shop, but my hose is only 24ft. That said , it is still long enough to cover my entire shop/garage, and it makes vacuuming the car almost fun. I did say almost. I don't have a reel yet and have been seriously thinking about it. Definitely like the use of the corner. Though I think I would have placed the reel at a 45 to the corner and a bit lower, making it cleaner to deploy and reel in.

    Great video. I also thought it would have unwound the hose better if it were mounted on the adjacent wall. I'm sure you considered that when you made your choice. Can you add some sort of hose guide below the reel? It could be a simplified version of the fairlead on a winch, maybe a rectangular loop of PVC that the hose would slide across.

    Tyler - getting ready to do a build on a portable shop vac (insulating it in a box and portable). Planned on using the dust right hose reel but this thing got some crappy write ups becuase it holds 1 1/2" hose, and the fitting attachment at the actual unit leaks. Did you experience this? Does the smaller diamater hose have enough suction with a shop vac to work well. thanks for comments.

  • @Nheeb
    @Nheeb 6 лет назад +2

    Like your big dust collector setup, this looks really clean. I'd like to see a mobile setup though, instead of the hose reel system. I'm sure you could do a really clean looking mobile unit, and that would be a big hit. Since it wouldn't require the reel, it would probably look smaller, and you could do it in the same footprint, so you could just push the whole unit into that corner when it's not needed.

    • @DIYTyler
      @DIYTyler  6 лет назад +2

      Jay Bates and Paul Jackman have made portable versions check their channels. I figured why be portable if I have a 40' hose?

    • @Nheeb
      @Nheeb 6 лет назад +2

      Well, I suppose my reasonings would be a lighter duty shop vac because you wouldn't need so much HP, and the ability to take your setup anywhere you can get power. Having to deal with a lot of hose bothers me (although the reel is cool, my go-to extension cord is on one). What I'd really like to see is a smallish footprint mobile version of your big dust collector setup, but that build is almost entirely a "can I do it" project instead of a "do I need it" project. I used a large Woodstock Separator that just sits on top of a 55 gallon drum for my collection, but it's smooth setup to move around by any means (I have the 2 HP harbor freight unit as well).

    • @mattydread6618
      @mattydread6618 6 лет назад

      Nheeb I suppose either way is a trade off. One reason for having the hose on a reel might be if you had limited outlets available. In that scenario you would not have a hose strung along the floor, but you would have an extension cord strung along the floor while you pushed the mobile unit around. Also, he is still going to have to push the mobile unit back across the shop to the corner where it would be parked. So either way I see it, you are either dealing with pushing the mobile unit around and parking it again (with possibly the hassle of the electrical cord) or you’re going to have to go back to the station and reel the hose back in. So in my mind it is just a matter of preference. Me personally I like his set up and will prolly copy it. Cheers

    Great build, and as always, good looking setup, even when using scrap wood to complete the project! I would venture that you are losing a lot of cfm in that system with only the 1.5" hose instead of 2.25". Is there a reason that you went with that size?

    • @DIYTyler
      @DIYTyler  6 лет назад +1

      I'm sure I am losing some, but you habe to remember with a Shop-Vac that it is more about the pressure than the CFM. This works excellent, and is way better than dragging around the shop vac! Thanks for watching!

    GREAT video Tyler. I have been thinking about this set-up. Is the handle reversible?? It looks like you mounted the unit upside down but I can see why as you need the handle on the right side.

    • @DIYTyler
      @DIYTyler  6 лет назад

      The handle is reversible. I am very right handed and wanted to turn the handle with my dominate hand. I don't think the unit would fit between the DC pipe and the wall, pretty sure I looked into that.

    • @JamesAmos
      @JamesAmos 6 лет назад

      I'm doing a Harbor-freight and filter set-up like yours.

    • @Bikeeast
      @Bikeeast 6 лет назад +1

      You will get very little suction from a dust collector through a 1.5" hose. Shop vac is designed for lots of suction power, but not a ton of air volume movement, dust collector is designed to move a ton of air, but not a lot of suction (static pressure)

    • @DIYTyler
      @DIYTyler  6 лет назад +2

      Thanks James! Like Brian said a 1.5 hose will not work on a DC because it is designed for high volume and not high pressure like a shop vac.
      Same reasons a shop vac is only decent as a dust collector, it simply doesn't cycle enough air through to gather the dust.

    • @MichaelOlsen-Engineer
      @MichaelOlsen-Engineer 6 лет назад

      Great question James Amos. The replies by Hide replies and Tyler G are spot on for this particular case. While it is possible to have a generalized dust collection & central vacuum system, the blowers commonly sold are not designed to accommodate both modes.
      The most common and effective dyi solution would be to install and actual central vacuum. This is followed by some form of high efficiency filter; a cyclone separator; and finally, the ducting for the dust collection and vacuum connections. This generally provides sufficient suction and air flow for both systems. The big draw back is both set up costs (frequently 50% more than a Dust Collector & Shop Vac) and significantly reduced motor life.
      Vacs are generally designed with the expectation of running for a max 60 min work cycle (run for 60 min and the off until motor is back to room temp). Many are only designed for 20 or 30 min cycles. Dust collectors, on the other hand, are actually designated, and therefore designed, as specialized air cleaners. They are required to be designed for a minimum of 8 hour work cycles under various health and safety regulations in the USA, UK, and most of the British Common Wealth. To accomplish this, the a designed with a very low flow restriction in mind (i.e. less suction mean lower demand on the blower motor). A great example would be the blower in your furnace (which by the way is today also considered a specialized air cleaner). It assume a relatively easy air flow on the intake side so that it can move a large volume with less effort.
      There are a few companies that make systems designed to do both job well and for a reasonably long work life. Most of their systems are custom designed for their clients, and come with a price tag that reflects that. These a typically found in Hospitals, Pharmaceutical Manufacturers, Various parts of the mining industry, and other areas where a one, or a few, specially designed systems would provide both significantly better operations, and substantial cost savings. In most cases, the later is only achievable in new construction or massive structural renovations. The last price I saw for such a system was just under $250,000 US. A bit out of reach for most dyi and hobbyists.

  • @solidunity
    @solidunity 6 лет назад +1

    Nice build Tyler. I feel like this is a dumb question or I'm overlooking something, but what's the advantage of having this shop vac driven as opposed to putting that hose reel of a tap off of your main dust collection system?

    • @T70781
      @T70781 6 лет назад +1

      Michael Hicks the hose is too small to work with a dust collector. A shop vac can pull about 6x more pressure than a dust collector so it can maintain acceptable flow even with a long narrow hose.
      However, a 2" hose would flow a lot more air than a 1.5" hose.

    • @DIYTyler
      @DIYTyler  6 лет назад +1

      It would but would aslo require either double the reel size or half the hose. Works well with the 1.5"

    • @DIYTyler
      @DIYTyler  6 лет назад +1

      Like Michael said, DC would probably pick up some junk through the hose but a shop vac is designed for this application. Thanks for watching!

    • @solidunity
      @solidunity 6 лет назад

    Is your vacuum 240V? No way you can get a true under load 5+ HP out of 120V. HP ratings on 120V vacuums are about as truthful as a politician running for election. NIce build and installation by the way.

    • @T70781
      @T70781 6 лет назад

      JB Marker shop vac hp ratings are based on the inrush power they are designed to handle so a higher hp rating really just means beefier windings which may last longer. Almost all full size shop vacs and upright vacuum cleaners run between 1100 and 1300 watts which is between 1.5 and 2 hp.

    • @akquicksilver
      @akquicksilver 6 лет назад

      My point exactly. Tyler mentioned his was 5.75 HP.

    • @T70781
      @T70781 6 лет назад

      JB Marker he's just referring to the in-rush power rating but to your point, anything rated at 1.75hp or higher should theoretically have about the same max pressure and flow rate.

    • @DIYTyler
      @DIYTyler  6 лет назад +5

      I dunno, it works. Rockler suggests a 5HP ( am pretty sure they are calling out the label on the front of the machine regardless of truthfulness or not) and I have a 5 3/4....good to go!
