Low profile Dustopper cyclone separator INSIDE my shop vac. No cart needed!

  • My new dust collection system is easy to build*, *easy to use*, and *low profile compared to other Dustopper setups. No need for a cart to hold an external bucket that dramatically increases the height or footprint of your shopvac, taking up valuable space in your woodworking workshop.     What do 2-Stage, Dust Separator, or Dustopper mean? The Dustopper dust separator (available at Home Depot for US$50 or CAD$65) is super effective at getting all the coarse dust to drop into the bin before the air gets sucked into the filter, so only the finest dust actually makes it to the filter stage. Similar to the Dustopper is Oneida Air's Dust Deputy - also great at separation, but its height prevents me to building it into low-profile setup.

    Edit: I did mention the Dustopper was expensive in my video, but in hindsight, it's really good value for a highly effective separator, the elbows (now includes 2), and the hose.

    Trivia: I bought this Craftsman vacuum back in 1990 for my woodwork workshop's dust collection when I was in high school and it still runs awesome!

    Great idea and the timing is perfect as I am working on a budget Vac Sys for my workshop today. I love the fact of using the existing Shop vac canister for the chip holder and the Heppa Filter is idea for a closed shop. Thanks for sharing your ideas with us.

      Glad it was helpful! It's was bugging me that the large stock canister becomes almost 'wasted space' in a traditional setup, so I had set out to figure out a way to flip it around :)

    Wow. I bought PVC elbows and small clear bucket yrs ago and made my cyclone collector on top of a used plaster bucket which draws its suction from my shop vac. Too cumbersome but I was so pleased with myself that I have used it since....BUT your idea TOPS mine completely! Today I will relocate my collector to inside my shop vac instead of beside it........BRILLIANT.

    This is a great design. I have a very similar old sears shop vac. I also have the dust topper and going to build mine just like this. Great space saving idea!! Great video!

    I wish I would have seen this before I started to build the bucket cyclone method. I have a small garage, so every sq ft of floorspace is important.

    Thank you for confirming what I was thinking. "There's no need for a separate cyclone set up, when you can combine them".
    And there's no need to have a multi-gallon barrel just to house the vacuum motor, when a simple bucket created the link.
    One question; is there a likelihood that the bucket would collapse from the vacuum suction?

      It's not likely since the vacuum motor isn't that powerful. I've heard from several people that when dealing with a 2HP dust collector and using plastic barrels, that they have collapsed those.

    Just saw this and it looks like a great idea. I need to build one and space is definitely a concern as well as how the hoses for my Dewalt vac are not standard size, which this method can eliminate it as a problem.

    Ive got a dust deputy type separator, two shop vacs and a third large shopvac bottom. Trying to use both vacs and 2 stage separation while taking up least amount of space and still easy to empty. Pretty overwhelmed

    Cool design! Don't you need to seal the gaps in your system? I wonder if it decreases effective suction at the hose.

      Ah, yes. Would be a good idea to add weatherstripping around the bottom of the wood piece that the Dustopper is mounted on, to seal against the canister once placed inside. I don't believe there's a need to seal between the Dustopper and the filter housing at it's a pretty tight fit, but if the bucket lid is flexing in towards the filter, it could be letting air in a bit.       That would be a good feature! While I haven't tried it, it should be easy to do: Drill a hole in the white filter housing and plug a small hose into it (say 1" diameter; like the kind used for a bilge pump). The other end goes into the drain of the shop vac. So if the canister is lined with a bag, that small hose would suck the bag tight against the canister.

    I am wondering which shop-vac manufacturer will be first to build this entire thing in the vacuum, and avoid the fiddling. Probably lagging because they are making money hand over fist selling filters and bags...

    Very different than what I have seen in dust collection. I like the idea of the low profile.
    Other cyclone systems separate the dust from the large chips.
    Your design appears to dump everything into the bucket and doesn’t separate? Is that correct? I am still trying to understand dust collection with so many designs and how others use the terminology. Thank you!

      It's the same/similar efficacy as any other system using the orange Dustopper cyclone. Ideally 100% of the dust and chips are dropped into the bin and only clean air enters the filter, so in essence the less "separating" a system appears to be doing means it's preforming really well (so long as both dust+chips are going in the bin and not the filter).

      I’ve watched some videos that design strictly adhere to the “separation” of fine dust and chips making it a point to collect the chips in the bucket with the “dust” being sucked up into the filter.
      At this point of my small shop I’m just trying to employ some sort of collection to help with dust.

    don’t say the word invented. that’s reserved for completely original ideas. even if someone improves on and existing design, it’s still not original. invention is a te used for a design or method never seen before.
    everything you have there can be purchased. people build all sorts of dust collectors for woodworking.
    do a search, you’ll see.
    i suspect that vacuum is not going to last that long because you’ve restricted it by trapping it inside a bucket. the surface area is greatly reduced. try measuring the air flow with and without the filter being trapped.
    the filter has a pleaded design to greatly increase surface area to increase airflow, so this is incredibly minimized and counterclockwise constructive ( for the lack of a better word) and will cause the motor to work much harder.
    the compact design is good.
    this double wide cart that everyone builds (myself included) has to go because it takes up twice as much space as it should.
    the really tall systems are just as annoying because they fall over and the hose has to be extra long because the inlet is so far off the ground.
    i’ve thought about utilizing the portion of the tyson vacuum with the multi-mini cyclones, but haven’t taken the time.
    maybe you have time…
