Woodturning Walnut and Oak Wizard Pipe

- The main reaction to my last video was "This is like a wizard pipe!", or "It's a pipe a hobbit would be proud to smoke!". Well, this new pipe would fit that description better in style, and I also show many different techniques to achieve the same results as before, if not even better.

I'd never dream of giving grief over that boyo, good on you for continuing such a time honored tradition and beautiful art form.
Thank you Scott! I think it's about time I made a few of more of these, with some improvements...
Yuval
A true artisan. Thank you Lahav, it was a wonderful demonstration and instruction in skill, care and love.
And I loved the method you used for making the stem. Pure lateral thinking of the genius!
Thank you.
Thank you SunriseBoy! Look out for the scorpion pipe, you can see some more of the stem techniques there.
Yuval.
Wonderful job, Yuval. If I was a smoker I would give that project a try. Thank for showing how it's done!
Happy Turning,
.....Gord
You don't need to smoke to make a pipe, like you don't need to eat out of every bowl you make Gord!! :) These are so fun and simple to make, and they make a great decorative or useful gift people just love.
Yuval.
Absolutely gorgeous! It was like watching poetry.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it :) Check out some of my other videos, I'm sure you could find a few more you like :)
Yuval.
I listened to the video description.....It sounds beautiful....Gandalf would be proud of you.
Cheers.
Chris.
Ahh, if only Gandalf was here man... I'd share a bowl of some halflings leaf with him ;)
Yuval.
This has been a time of real joy for me. Love it. Thanks for doing this.
That is a truly beautiful piece. Thank you, also, for clearing up some confusion I had over how the stem was stem made!
Thanks Dominic!! There are a few methods for creating these stems, in future videos I'll show a few more different techniques :)

Очень интересное видео!!!👍👍👍👍👍
Your artistry is not only demonstrated in fine wood works, but also in the musik selection. God's blessing for your family!
Thank you Torvig! Blessings for you and yours as well!
Yuval.
I am so jealous of the magic you guys make. Beautiful work!!!
Thanks you Rev.! You know we all started somewhere, we were not all born with a skew in our hands ;) It's never to late to pick up a new hobby...
Yuval
What you do with wood is nothing short of art. A beautiful pipe. You have inspired me to try this. Im a newbie to turning, just a couple years now. I recently BEAT cancer and not able to return to work as of yet. The treatments beat me up pertty bad but Im getting better each passing day. Im glad to have my little backyard wood shop for crafts as it has given me many hours of peaceful enjoyment. Thank you Yuval for doing such good video, very interesting and informative, it is waking my mind up to learning again and gives me something I enjoy while Im recouping. It is a long road to getting past the cancer and treatments. If not for my woodshop, I would be losing my mind from boredom. Thank you again.
Thank you Jame! I'm glad to hear you were able to beat cancer, and I'm sure a creative hobby is something that will help keep your mind and body while you're still recuperating. I found my little backyard shop a therapeutic area as well, even if I'm not in the mood for creating, sitting in there thinking always calms me down. If there's anything I can do help (other then post videos with time), let me know!
Yuval
Hope you have beaten the cancer and be still with us!
beautiful work man!! love the carving design, and how random it looked while you were working on it. that looks great!!
Thanks Garcia!!
I really like doing work like that, the detailing, I wish I had more projects to do more of that.
Yuval
Simply brilliant Yuval. A great example of creative wood working. I haven't smoked for many years and I might just start again.
Thank you Alan!! No need to start smoking again for you to enjoy making some pipes, it's a great project, lots of fun and possibilities!
Yuval.
I am definitely trying this project. Just awesome craftsmanship. Thank you for sharing your skills with us.
You'll see, when you make one, you'll enjoy it so much you'll make 5 more... :)
Yuval
Very cool Yuval! I like the smell of a pipe and now I know the technique for the stem so I can create that smell for myself!
Thanks very much for sharing!
Take care, Dave
Thank you David! I'm sure that in no time you'll be smelling up your shop and everything around you with aromatic pipe tobacco :)
Yuval.
Magnificent pipe. Love the style. Glad I found your channel.
Thank you Murphy!! Got a few more pipes posted, and of course, lots of other projects, hope you find them as interesting :)
Yuval.
Nicely done Yuval, the texturing added a lot to that pipe.
Steve
Thank you Steve!
Yuval.
Song name plz
I actually liked the smooth walnut better. Either way though- beautiful pipe.
Binge watching your videos, beautiful craftsmanship!
Thank you Michael!! Hope your binge doesn't drag you down to the depth of hell!! :)
Yuval.
Wow, awesome work. I like the design of this pipe even more than your last one.
Thank you DrexIFlo! As far as projects go, this is a fun one to make, there are many many possibilities for personalization.
Yuval.
Nicest pipe making video I have seen in a long while. Liked the music as well, very watchable. Good job. I don't use glue on my pipes at all and have never thought of using walnut for the bowl.
Thank you William! I'm glad you enjoyed the whole viewing experience :)
Nice addition to your previous olive/oak pipe. I'm hoping to try both styles soon! best wishes for continued success.
Thank you Tom! I'm sure you'll be making great pipes in no time!
Yuval.
Nice job on the pipe. I liked the jig you used and the detail carved into the bowl. Nice video and I like the music, very relaxing.
Thank you Wayne! Making a pipe like this is scary only on the first one, when I did my first one, a few years back, I was sure it will be a waste of time. When it went well, I made 8 more right away!!! :)
Yuval.
You sir, are a very talented man, enjoyed seeing such skill being used, thanks
Thank you Mr. Z!! :)
Yuval
you are very talented.
thank you for sharing your expertise.
Thank you Sensei!
Yuval.
Nice project, nice music, nice vijeo. Just a tip....Burning walnut may smell nice but if you ground more back relief into your modified spade drill it would cut better and probably not heat up.
Thanks! That is a good tip, and that was an experimental scraper which I've already improved, but it's a valid point nonetheless :)
Yuval
Try drilling at a slower rate of speed. The more heat you make the more the cutter gets dulled which leads to more heat and dullness. A sharp cutter at lower speed will cut rather than burn through the wood.
Wonderful video. Thanks for your efforts. Very enjoyable. Music is outstanding.
Thank you Blue Dog!! Go over some of my other videos, I try to create a full viewing and listening experience.
Yuval
great to see you making the pipe and the stem I have always wondered how they were made
Thank you Tom! I'm always happy when I teach someone something new!
Yuval.
Wow! Wow! And Wow! That pipe really looks great! Nice work!
Thank you! It also smokes great!
Yuval

Another really cool video Yuval. I really enjoyed watching this, the smoke at the end looked very satisfying ! Take care my friend. Jim
Thank you Jim!! It sure was, even if it was just for show, I'll never waste so much of my tobacco on a pipe, I'm a little tight on funds latley :)
Yuval.
Thank you Jim!! It sure was, even if it was just for show, I'll never waste so much of my tobacco on a pipe, I'm a little tight on funds latley :)

Beautiful work,I love it!
Thanks Jen!
Yuval
you have a great imagination for woodworking my friend
Thank you Dave! Just trying to have some fun in the shop :)
Yuval.
Traditional work, with modern machinery, excellent all round artist, PS good music aswell xx
Thank you greenfingers! I'm glad you liked the music too, I don't always get it right for all viewers.
Yuval
Oh, it looks so good!
Thank you Ruslan!
Yuval
No grief from me as I am a pipe smoker and have really enjoyed your vids on this project.
Thank you Earl! In one of my older videos, I finished the video in a scene where I smoke a cigaret and drink some iced tea to celebrate the ending of the really long and hard project (my torus hollow form), and the amount of people complaining about that 5 seconds of me smoking was staggering...
Yuval.
My guess would be that the majority of the negative comments on smoking came from US subscribers.
Your guess is as good as mine, and I guess the same. :)
That was amazing to watch. Really nice work! It kinda makes me want to take up smoking a pipe!
Thank you Michael!! I'm not in the habit of helping others pick up bad habits ;) But they are sure fun to make!
Yuval.
Michael Lawing You absolutely should my good man! It is a beautiful, dieing art. I would highly recommend watching some of “Mutton Chop Piper’s” videos if you’re interested. It’s a very relaxing past time carried through the ages of men! I’ve been smoking for 3 years now. No regrets.
You look very wise! Beautiful pipe Yuval!
Thank you! I'll be working on a pointy hat and a shavings beard next ;)
Yuval.
Si señor!! Un trabajo de medalla de oro, salud y suerte!!!
Thank you Iroko!! (Iroko is one of my favorite woods to turn...).
Yuval
Really enjoyed this. A thing of beauty 😃
Thank you Steven!
Yuval
Wonderful to watch.
Cheers
Thanks Ravenslip! :)
Yuval
This is the single most satisfying and relaxing video I have ever seen.
Thank you Keith, and I know those can be very therapeutic... :)
Yuval
I watched a couple videos on making pipes and it inspired me to give it a try. Working on my first right now. Had some trimmings from one of my blue berry bushes that had a fork that screamed MAKE A PIPE OUT OF ME. So my first attempt. Hope I can make it look half as good as yours. Thanks
Thanks for the comment Tracy! I hope that fork stopped screaming once you made it into a pipe, or else you could have a few sleepless nights with all that noise ;)
Yuval
Really enjoyed this video, the music works very well with the onscreen activity, especially the carving footage. Great piece of work, thanks for sharing. And the wizard hat is not a bad idea at all. Take good care, Gord
Thank you Gord! I'll be working on my hat making skills soon!! :)
Yuval.
Too bad Italy is so far from BC. Would be nice to chat over coffee. Take good care, Gord
I wish I could be so as well Gord!!
Yuval.
well, friends are friends wherever we find them...:)

Thanks Patti! And you're welcome, don't know how I helped you but glad I did! ;)
Yuval
Nice carving! Love it
That was honestly amazing
Thank you Austin! I'm glad you approve ;)
Yuval
Nice pipe. I hope to be making my own pipes soon. I gain encouragement from your videos. Thank you.
Thank you William! You will see, the first one will take you a while, but if you enjoyed making the one, you'll make another, and each will be quicker and more enjoyable.
Yuval
This video was so calming to watch
Thank Cooper! Feel free to watch it again :)
Yuval
Very very nice, and proving it smokes, awesome video, you have inspired me.
Thanks Mark! I used to be all about functionality, but then turned to artistic turning, but I'm still have to produce some things that work. I made a few smaller pipes for different products, friends go nuts for them :)
Yuval
ooh this is great! thanks for showing it to us.
Thanks, and you're most welcome! :)
Yuval
Thank you for smoking!
It's about time I saw someone do that on YT 😊
LOL, it was a risk at getting this video flagged down as not suitable for younger audiences, but still no one actually reported me, or maybe RUclips think it's ok I'll show the pipes actually smoke if I'm showing how to make them... Now if they only knew I smoked in them, that's a different issue all together...
Yuval
Awesome pipe Yuval!! Really like the carving!!
Thank you John! It's a fun project with a lot of space for personal expression.
Yuval.
I'm going to try to do one. Do you have any tips?
Take it slow, getting the stem glue up right can take a few tries, don't get down if you file too much and don't get the hole in the bowl right with the shape of your stem, it's the hardest point to do right in the whole projects, use a hole "ruler" like I showed in my previous video to gauge the size of the stem and use friction to mark for high points to file, it's better to file many times until you get the shape right than file out of shape.
The way you carved that bowl reminded me of Keith Haring's work; there's an idea for your next peice! ;-)
Thanks also for crediting the musicians. Ben McElroy has got himself a new fan.
Thank you! And yes, it does bring up a taste of Keith!! Next time I'll do some little people dancing... :) Ben's music is very good, I find it relaxing.
Yuval
"Spark my ganja, little hobbit!" - Gandalf
Yeah, not sure that is what he said, but I'm sure that is what he meant ;)
Yuval.
Волшебник-Пендаль😆
That is wonderful work!
Thanks Krip!
Yuval
That's a beautiful pipe Yuval & unlike the previous one, I would definitely smoke this one !!!!
Thanks for sharing ......... Geof (UK)
Thank you Geof!! All pipes are for smoking :) If you ever come by, I'll let you sample them all, to find your favorite :)
Yuval.
+Yuval Lahav Woodturning I'll keep you to that Yuval, I've been trying to get my wife to retire to Italy for years !!!
Rgd's ....... Geof
Let me know when you plan to come check out the place, started working lately as a tour guide, I could show you guys around :)
Yuval.
Beautiful work
Thanks Chef!
Yuval
Hope you are keeping well and are enjoying your summer.
Yeah Ruth, I do my best, working my ass off, wife is a little down since she stopped working, but we'll brave through, it seems we can't get a break... Summer is going fine, it's hot, but less hot than last year, and the house keeps cool, and if we want, we have the beach 5 minutes away, and I prefer the lake 20 minutes away, if you ask me :)
Yuval.
Are you enjoying the work though? You're lucky having the beach and a lake so close. As yet we haven't had much sun this year.
Great video. beautiful pipe my friend.
Thank you Dale!
Yuval.
Wow … beautiful work
Thank you Rex!
Yuval
Great video! Thanks for sharing :-)
Would be delighted to get more information on the theoretic part of pipe turning. Like the stem hole, which angle and how it should meet the big hole and stuff like that.
He covers some of that in his other videos.
I know, but I want to know it all ;-)
A nice condensed video about that would surely be a great help for every beginner, not just for me.
I myself don't moke pipe, but I've been fascinated by pipes since my youth.
Well, making a video with all specific wouldn't pose an interest to most of my viewers, but I can tell about this pipe, the stem is 30 cm long, the hole is 6 mm in diameter, the stem is pressure fitted and not glued into the hole, so it can be twisted and pulled out in case it gets blocked, for easy clean up, the angle is up for choice, since I have many different shapes of stems (you can see a couple of them at the end of the video along side the new pipe), I try to make the angle of the hole so when the stem is connected to the pipe, the top of the bowl and the lip of the stem are both level to each other, so while sucking on it, the bowl will be level and not tilted. Anything else?? :)
Yuval.
Bravo! utilissimo! mi diletto al tornio pure io e proverò sicuramente. Grazie!
Grazie Massimo! dopo che hai fatto qualche di questi, c'i vuole circa 20-25 minuti per fare ogni pipa... un po di piu per fare la canna... Di dove sei? io abito vicino Roma.
Yuval
Gorgeous pipe Yuval, and a lovely video about it's making. Oh how this video makes me want to start smoking again ;)
Take care
Mike
Thank you Mike!! I'm not a pipe smoker as well, but man, these are so much fun to make!
Yuval.
The engraving on theoutside of the bowl looks like worm tracks, I love it!
That was exactly what I was aiming for, so thanks for the positive affirmation!! :)
Yuval
Well Done Sir!!!
Thank you Jeff!
Yuval
Beautiful work. Though I would have preferred the bowl left smooth, and polished out nice and glassy to emphasize the grain, especially a tight smooth grain like walnut. Great job 👍
As a metter of choice, I would prefer a smooth one as well, but people want all different kinds of pipes :)
Yuval
You did a great job on this pipe I think I'm gonna have to build one before to long
+Jake Fryberger Don't take your time, these are perfect as a Christmas gifts, get to making!!
You look like grandfather time my friend.Great job as usual.Cheers Roger B.V.S.A.🇦🇺.......
Thank you Roger!! Wish I was, that way I could turn back time a little :)
Yuval.
Superb piece of work mate!! Great idea with the modified spade bitCheers for now Bram
Thank you Brams old chum!! :) I should cut that spade bit shaft so it wouldn't vibrate like crazy :)
Yuval.

Thank you Mitch!
Yuval.
I've got to make myself one of those! And I can borrow Sheila's wand, then all I need is a pointy hat! Great video as usual my friend, Take care, Keith.
Couldn't Sheila magic one out for you, Keith?? :)
Yuval.
I suppose she could, but that would take all the fun out of it!!
amazing work
Thanks Craig!!
Yuval
You're a true master!
Thank you Marrabas!
Yuval
Very nice indeed. The best pipe I ever owned was made from apple wood,,, but walnut is nice as well. Great shape and styling.
Thank you!! I've got some apple wood, might be I'll try it out! :)

I like the wormy carving effect . If you grow a beard like Mike Waldt and turn a wizard hat with that pipe you'll be ready for Harry potter lol . Great vid take care.
Thank you Glen!! Wife doesn't like it when I grow a beard, and the hat, well, I just might indulge... :)
Yuval.

Thank you!! You can make your own, it will be very satisfying!
Yuval
you have just inspired me so I must thank you. I have some black walnut and cherry and maple I want to use. walnut bowl and cherry sides and maple stem tops.
Well, that would make a nice pipe :) You can also use cherry for the bowl by the way, good luck and thank you for the comment!
Yuval.
Yuval Lahav Woodturning thank you for the information. I just got into wood working and have limited knowledge. do you have a Facebook page?
You're welcome! And I sure do, both a personal and an artist page, just look me up :)

Yuval
Nice work 😉👍👌
Thanks!! Glad you liked it! :)
Yuval
Thank you for your wonderful videos! I have watched both #67 and #68 before making a pipe of my own. I have not treated mine yet because I'm a bit unsure of what to treat it with. I saw that you treated the outside of the bowl with mineral oil. Do you treat the inside of the bowl with that as well or do you leave it untreated? I’m a bit afraid that my mahogany bowl will catch on fire. For the stem I used Wenge. Do you think that's safe or is it bad to smoke through a stem of Wenge? A lot of questions I know haha!
Thank you Pontus.
I left the inside of the pipe bowl untreated, some people like to treat it with some watered down honey. Your bowl will get a layer of charcoal inside the bowl as you smoke it, and then that layer will act as barrier between the content of the bowl and actual live wood. Some pipes come pre burnet from the manufacturer, some come naturally. In pipe making factories they use friction inside the bowl to char it ready for smoking.
I wouldn't know about Wenge, I'm sorry... :)
Yuval.
GOOD job !!
Thanks Karolina!!
Yuval
Amazing idea
Thanks you Rahimah!
