Like that you explain what you're doing.and no annoying music
thanks for watching
Agree! I love to watch many video's, and they lose me when music is annoying.
Beautiful piece.
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks for the step by step video. Really helped this newbie who just tried woodturning something like this yesterday and was frustrated to no end
Glad it helped!
This is a great method which I hope to attempt soon. I think thought, I'll keep my tool edge much further away from the chuck jaws in rotation.
2/2024 .5 ❤..love no music, your skill is enough
Thanks for watching.
Watching again today! Made my first one..turned out ok.
really great video, shows how to actually make this box from start to finish!
Ok, that’s the way to start a video. No music, no stupid introductions, just get right into the reason why I clicked on your channel.
Thank you for watching.
I agree. I subscribed at the beginning of the video because of that format.
Thank you.
...And thus spake Zarathustra.
You sound just like my dad
I love watching woodworking videos, these lathe vids are mesmerizing at times. A curious question I had though is, wouldn't it be better on the tools for the lathe if you had cut down the "square" shape of it first using a saw or is it just the satisfaction of beginning to end on the lathe? No hate I promise, just a curiosity.
On small-diameter items like these, reducing a square to a 'rounder' shape is actually easier on the lathe. For larger pieces (6"-8" and up), it's less...adventurous...if you knock it down to an octagon or round shape before you start turning.
Nice covered box
Might want to sharpen your forstner bit and round over the bottom
Moumt the bottom om a jamb chuck and turn in a foot and dome the bottom
Hi there, nice video!
What wood is that? Also which are the best woods for working on lathe? Thanks!
He said spalted maple I believe
Thank you for describing your processes. And no annoying background music as you merrily turn away. . Did you plan to apply finish to the inside ? Your forster bit needs sharpening . It should be peeling curly shavings not micro bits , and how do you plan to remove the nub of the tenon from the bottom? Jamb chuck , pin jaws ? Relieve the bottom edge just slightly ? I heard you tick the chuck jaws just slightly , might want to touch up the gouge , and hone your other tools there was a lot of fine tear out that you sanded off that a pass with your skew, or a shear cut from a half inch Irish bowl gouge could smooth off first . I measure the depth of planned interiors and then wrap a bit of blue masking tape on the shank of drilling bit , leaving an allowance for the lead spur or tip of twist drill . You did not mention what wood that you were using . Spallted yellow birch , apple ? Overall a nice video
What do you charge for a box like this? Nice video.
Most of these small boxes i get between $30 to $40 they take no more then 1/2 hour to make. Most of the time i am making them from left over bits and pieces.
@@BlackLabelwoodworks Priced right for a nice looking box. Nice job
@@BlackLabelwoodworks ?
It’s $15-$25 in a previous response…
where's the link to the sanding paste?
Sell it to whom?
Anyone with money!
Good work, but I shall not return to a channel that has commercials every 4-1/2 minutes. Tell RUclips to Back Off.
3/2024 ..did not see one commercial. Maybe after a certain number views..they stop.
Don't be cheap and get premium RUclips with no ads, and stop blaming the channels.
Yeah because some blue collar wood worker has the power to tell the multi billion dollar RUclips platform where and when they are allowed to put commercials
Obviously you don't have premium. If you don't stop wringing about ads.
@@raganca4313they at least used to be able to
Why didn't you (Jam Chuck) finish the bottom of the box?
Wakodahatchee Chris
Probably done off camera; he demonstrates how to apply the finish, so off you go 😀
I love the lack of music and straight forward instructions, very informative. Thanks you!
Excellent video, to the point, down to work from the start, no unnecessary fillers and I actually learned something. Thanks for posting !👍👏
Glad you enjoyed it!
I just bought a Record Power Herald Lathe and just starting to turn wood. Thank you for sharing your talent with newbies like me.
Your welcome thanks for taking the time to watch.
Very nice little box. Very pretty wood. Well presented. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Thanks, you too!
Why not turn off the scratch/cut what was still on the finished box?
I like to splt the top and bottom as you do. Then I turn the bottom , holding it on the bottom 1/2". Sand and finish in and out and friction polish it. Then I do the inside of the lid and friction fit the bottom to it and finish the bottom of the box. Then I return the lid to a sacrificial piece in the chuck and complete the grip knob, friction polishing this too.
Nice video. You say exactly what you doing. I will be watching more of your work 😊
Awesome, thank you!
Great job. I looked for the link to the walnut oil/wax and sanding paste but couldn’t find it. Can you share what you used? Thanks.
Thank you. Here is the link to my finishes. www.blacklabelwoodworks.com/wax-and-sanding-pastes/ I currently only have the wax listed i need to make more of the sanding paste.
Kind of sound like Ray from everybody loves Raymond
Ditto, "Ok, that's the way to start........
Good joob guys
Thank you
Nice video...thank you for your time in making it...and I agree about the intro :) On another note, after your applied your finish and parted the box off the lathe, how did you remove the nub on the bottom?
Thanks for watching. I used a rotary tool and a 2 inch sanding disc. If you wanted you could make a jamb chuck to fit the opening and do it that way. I just find it easier with the rotary tool for small turnings.
Great video I agree no music, I love the British videos, but they never stop talking. You get to the point I saved this video in my library for future tips and tricks.
Excellent video. Thank you for sharing your talents.
Great video, no frills just straight up good work. Nice piece. Is it spalted maple or birch or…?
It's spalted maple thanks for watching
Very nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
So how long from start to finish in real time, how much for materials and what do you sell them for?
how did you learn to use a lath and make cool stuff how much do you charge for that
What does a jar like that sell for
$15 to $25 for something small like this one.
Nice project
Thank you! Cheers!
I like your straight forward style of teaching/talking. For me, the noise from the lathe and from tool-on-wood is as loud or louder than your voice. I can barely make out what you’re saying when you talk while working. You can do better, judging from other turners videos. In all other respects very enjoyable and informative and you could be one of my regularly watched content producers. Maybe a little more light directed on the work area?
Thank you. Sorry about the bad audio i was trying a new mic and didn't realize it was picking up my lathe noise until i was done recording.
Looks great, I love making these.
Thank you! Cheers!
No links.
Nice spalting.
Did you make the internal tool?
Its a 3/8 curved boring bar from John Jordan woodturning. It comes unhandled so i turned one for it.
That’s amazing Phil love the decoration was all a big surprise 😮 after the dark left just love it for being to full of lines makes you want to count the rings 👍🏻❤️beautiful
Nice enough shape, but could be refined to appeal to the ladies. I’d never suggest that it’s ok to take a tool that close to spinning jaws! When turning spalted pieces it’s essential to use sharp tools, to avoid tearing the very soft parts of the wood. I would also suggest a mask especially for the fine powder you scraped off with the swan neck. Again a sharp insert would cut better and produce a shaving not dust.
Some day I hope to start a wood turning business I have over 1000 bd ft of rough cut cherry that's been staked in my barn for over ten years, just waiting for me to build something out of there 1x6s2x8s I'll get there some day.
JUST CAME ACROSS THIS VIDEO 📹 ON YOU TUBE DID YOU USED A GUAGE TOO AND WHATS THAT OTHER TOOL 🔧 YOUR USEING PLEASE I MAKE WISHING WELLS AND SOMETHING LIKE THAT WOULD BE GREAT FOR THE CENTRE WHERE THE ROPE WRAPS AROUND 😊
What type of wood is that?
It's so beautiful!
It's spalted maple.
There is no link to the Sanding paste.
Sorry i sold out and currently in the process of moving to a new shop. Once I replenish my supply i will put the link back up.
@@BlackLabelwoodworks- great. I looked for it also. I'd also be curious about the method and proportions in your self-made wax. I assume you melt the waxes, then add the walnut oil?
Now I know how the Egyptinanians made those cool Vases.
Isn't it the worst when you bust through a wall
Nice job thanks for showing us this project . Ive liked and subd you ,Greetings from Wales UK
I can smell the sawdust
Where did you find the dept gauge been trying to find one?
Thanks Michael
This is the one i use amzn.to/3VVFx1m
@@BlackLabelwoodworks thanks
What spindal speed are you using?
Something this size I start off at around 1000 rpms until its round then up 1500 - 2000 rpms. If its bigger then 4 inches I would start off a little slower.
Nice job
I like the shape of the little box, but I think you should be sanding and finishing the inside.
Seems i missed mentioning in the video I spray all the insides of my boxes with sanding sealer.
The shape is generally called a 'ginger jar'.
Great looking box, but did you not sand it more before finishing. There are still visible rings. Thanks for sharing your techniques, but yo let the piece down by not sanding it with higher grade papers.
Nice design for a box but i cant see anybody buying it with the condition you left it in. The tool marks, that gash on the side, tearout inside the lid and on the tenon for the lid. Sorry to be be so critical. Other than that you put out a nice video.
Way too much dead time just looking at piece
Sorry it's not a TikTok edit, but it definitely gives better idea of how long it actually takes to make
Why did you round your skew ? It also look uneven on the edge.
The grind on the skew is similar to what Alan Lacer uses it makes it a little easier to control.
