That's Prokofiev. You play Prokofiev applying pressure and at all times CLEAR! His music can be find in the comas!

Kogan has more than fingers . Imagination ! Kondrashin recorded well here the score is clear .

I had no idea how great Kogan played., in spite of the fact that I' ve been playing semi-pro since 1955to2004The rapport between Kondrashin and Kogan was so close, that I' m a loss for words..it's obvious to me ,that he has a positive ,musical imagination,in excess, to play two repeated passages differently- on the opening phrases ,that may sound as if they're played in 5/4 time ,the second time ,he glissandos from b flat to d ,which he didn't do the first time. His phrasing was done tastefully, without excess contrast. This performance, if I never heard him play again, in my opinion, was above great, but superior. Thank , Mr Kondrashin and Leonid Kogan.

What a great performance...clearly miked very closely as was typical then but very little, hardly no violin "noise" that you sometimes hear in closely miked performances that you wouldn't in a live performance. Amazing! Kogan's paganini solo is also so good it's rediculous how well played it is!

KOGAN ! After his incredible interpretation of Shostakovitch Violin Concerto n1, now here we can see what this legend did in Prokofieff n2. Great and wonderful as usual

Una superba interpretazione del capolavoro di Prokofiev. Intonazione strepitosa e vibrato perfetto. Grande Kogan!

I grew up (a very long time ago) listening to the Francescatti-Mitropoulos recording of this masterpiece. I've never heard a performance I liked as well -- not Heifetz, not Oistrakh. For some reason, I have never heard Kogan in this. Wow. Perfection. The last movement, in particular, is not too fast, a mistake many make in my opinion (e.g., Janine Jansen). And Kogan takes the "ben marcato" seriously, as does Francescatti. I love the way Kogan and Kondrashin take a small ritard before the last entrance of the main theme in the this movement and then Kogan does it with incisive rhythm, as does Francescatti. Heifetz walks through this as if nothing just happened. It's a huge moment, Jascha!!
In any case, thanks to the uploader for this great recording and for reminding me that I don't know Kogan's playing nearly well enough.

I couldn't agree more! That brief 'rit.' is magical! I grew up with Isaac Stern's performance, which I also loved. Worth a listen if you can locate a source.

Jahrhundert!

Let's never forget Leonid Kogan. A great Russian violinist who worked so hard and had technical skills which were not reached by fellow Russian famous violinists, not even by David Oistrakh.

I HAVE THE KOGAN CD COLLECTION & NOT A DAY GOES BY THAT I DON'T THINK ABOUT HIM. AS FOR OISTRAKH, HE WAS GIVEN THE BEST RECORDING EQUIPMENT PROVIDED BY THE USSR, WHEREAS KOGAN WAS FORCED TO RECORD ON INFERIOR EQUIPMENT. OISTRAKH WAS ENVIOUS OF MICHAEL RABIN'S TECHNIQUE. I CAN'T SAY THAT KOGAN MATCHED OISTRAKH MUSICALLY ON EVERYTHING. ON THE OTHER HAND, THERE ARE WORKS THAT KOGAN PLAYS EVEN BETTER THAN OISTRAKH. THIS IS ONE OF THEM. ANOTHER IS THE VALSE-SCHERZO BY TCHAIKOVSKY. NEITHER, IN MY OPINION, EQUAL HEIFETZ'S PLAYING, ALTHOUGH BOTH HAD GOTTEN VERY CLOSE.

Considering both were Jews I think it would be justice to at least say Jewish-Russian violinists (that is before considering their fathers and mothers and realizing that the amount of Russian blood in them is literally zero).
      P.S.
Decided to include a reference before anyone complains:
"The World: The Harsh Plight of the Soviet Jews", Time (magazine), January 25, 1971. Accessed August 31, 2011. "Bolshoi Prima Ballerina Maya Plisetskaya and perhaps 90% of the Bolshoi Orchestra are Jewish, as are Violinists Leonid Kogan and David Oistrakh and Pianist Emil Gilels." The following link can be found under reference 3 on the Leonid Kogan page on Wikipedia (which is not a great source but doesn't undermine the validity of these links): content.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,904644,00.html

Why should they be called Jewish-Russian? In that case you would be describing people as, for example, German American, or Norman English or Spanish Chilean etc etc

I've heard (maybe you have, too) that despite Kogan's superb skills, Oistrakh was selected as the violinist to best 'represent' USSR, and Kogan was somewhat pushed into the background. Cruel.
