Humanity lost the greatest genius violinist of all time when we lost him. He is the greatest of the greatest artists.
I love that he's taking time just letting the piece breathe
BRAVO!
I don't think I've ever heard a version of this with a clearer performance of rithm. Everyone gets crazy about going fast and then all the tempo becomes a mess. This one is really nice.

Kogan the consummate artist....
I swear this recording gets raised by another half-step every time I come back to listen to it
You don't have perfect pitch. You're a moron.
His play comes from another galaxy, superhuman.
He is able to make all that jumble looking notes sound so tidy that even a lay ear would enjoy it. All thanks to his unbelievably precise technique.
Bingo❤ Kogan played clearly so that music could be listened to happily by the audience, be they musicians or not......and understood.😊
This to me is one of Paganini's best pieces. It has all of the performative and theatrical virtuosity we expect from him, but it is combined with some very sophisticated melodies in between. Kogan, of course, plays it really beautifully too!!!
Incredible. He's jumping octaves with harmonics, the whistling sounds. So he isn't even pressing the string down. He knows where to touch it. Truly gliding over the strings.
Leonid Kogan was for five years the teacher of my own violin teacher. Now I understand the chance that I have with a such teacher that learnt from one of the greatest violinist of the twentieth-century...
Are you studying with Mr Kaler?
Whos your teacher? 🙏🙌
I get the feeling. Mine studied with Hirschorn. It's such a privilege.
It made me cry... I never really appreciated this peice but he played it so well, it is like a different piece! It is so beautiful... I can't even describe it... So beautiful...
The vinyl distortion in the recording nicely accentuates his ridiculously perfect intonation.
It's almost annoying how good he is
no, it the contrary. The curve grooves on a vinyl record add more depth to the sound in comparison with the numerical peaks on computerised recoding. Vinyl records offer more clarity on the high frequencies as well. Fr example when you listened to an orchestra on a vinyl recoding, you can feel the depth of the stage, i.e. the sound being dispersed in 3 dimensions. In other words, vinyl records reproduce sounds with greater realistic perspective.
Is it sharper ? It sounds like but I am not too sure
@@seto_bento yes it’s a half step sharp
@@sergechristoffersen62 If you believe that vinyl sound more realistic than digital media you don't understand how digital media works.
No person in this world understood Paganini better as Leonid Kogan the Great (as I call him) It is thanks to internet that he will be not forgotten and that his mastership still is a learning factor to any 4 stringed performer.
Mr Carlos, you said the words.
He is my most favorite violinist. I feel lucky to hear his absolute control and mastery of his ability to produce such wonderful performance.
Caught myself watching with opened mouth .. simply breathtaking ! The Great Leonid Borisovich Kogan.
Every violinist has their unbeatable strengths...this man's left hand pizzicato strength is supreme.
This much have been the video that zihu’s mom showed him every day before bedtime for ten years
This... is... INSANE.
I just want listen to it over and over.
Kogan eats the other classical violinists for breakfast. His technique is what most other classical violinists can only dream about.
+Antonio Valentini 😂
+Antonio Valentini 😂😂
+Antonio Valentini 😂😂😂
+Antonio Valentini 😂😂😂😂
+Antonio Valentini haha!
Leonid for me works like a medium when he is playing Paganini. It make me feel as I was in the Paganini's time and presence... It's amazing!
Best violinist of all time. I am lucky to have heard him in concert.
Yes you ARE! Wow.
Kogan brings Paganini back to life...he is like a reincarnation of that greatest violinist......wonderful experience...thanks for uploading
Leonid Kogan, one of the best musicians that knows Paganini's music style well
Virtuoso performance. The 24 who gave this a thumbs down, I just don't know what to say.
The spirits of the Paganini Caprices! They've come to get revenge b/c someone surpassed their creator!
Favoloso❤❤
It is disturbing to read several comments that declare this or that person to be the greatest violinist ever... - Do you have a checklist, do you give points to decide that? And why take anything away from others that all have achieved something that we are not even able to imagine and fully understand? There were/are a number of wonderful musicians - why is that not enough? Let's love and admire them all for what they are/were.
Impresionante Leonid Kogan!!!!!
Partitură diabolică, interpretare fabuloasă! Inegalabil artist!
Il est mon idole.
Simply stunning !!!
Kogan's bow is actually a wand!
almost, it's a tourte
This is as good as the violin playing gets! Just the purity of intonation alone makes this listening worthwhile. The key to Leonid Kogan's magic is, I believe, in his fearless, earnest, and clearly articulated tone. I think that David Oistrakh achieved such consistency of tone much later in his career. Issac Stern was the one who made Oistrakh rethink his own sound production. Whereas, Kogan had always had that verve, that clarity and vibrancy which were uniquely his own and therefore absolutely irresistible.
Well said! Heifetz almost there but doesn't have the devil spirit like Kogan, everyone else fulfilled some required technique but not as flawless and expressive, BTW I have not heard any other virtuoso can do the whistle from 9:50 to 10:38 .
@@joecheng3344 the whistle thing is really easy. Its called false harmonics. Kind of hard actually but nothing compared to other parts of the piece
I don't think its possible for a non-musician (and even many musicians) to fathom how difficult and advanced some of those techniques are. In some moments it seems as though he has brought Paganini back to life along with the soul of the devil in his fervent performance. Pretty fucking brilliant I must say.
Some of those techniques?? ^_^
reine svenssons Left hand pizz, Chords (hard to not crunch), sul g (hard to get in tune) ricochet ( the passage with ricochet on four strings is hell ), double harmonics (arguably the hardest violin technique), were there thirds? ( i’m not a violinist)
@@peterdeck2696 So what if i took the words from someone? They asked for techniques and I answered, is there a problem? Should i have to explicitly state my sources for widely known techniques just because eddy explained them in the same way? There is no genuineness in this, it’s literally called answering a question. And how would you know if i had relative pitch, when it’s not even relevant to the techniques, did you similarly use them ignorantly and lift them from other videos? I have learnt many things from that channel, and i have every right to use that knowledge, however limited it may be, to try to help.
@@me3251 Sorry, I thought you were replying to the main comment instead of the one below it. I misunderstood what your intention was. Again, sorry about that.
Edit: I thought you were answering the main question to try and make it seem like you did "fathom how difficult and advanced some of those techniques are" in some pretentious way. I should've read your comment more carefully. Relative pitch is the ability to discern intervals, so it would be relevant IF you were trying to pretend like you fully understand these techniques (b/c you weren't sure if there were thirds or not, and somebody who has developed relative pitch would be able to tell ). Sorry for the misunderstanding, and I should not have commented so haphazardly.
You are so absolute right. His platform is only mesurabel in heaven.
the technique and the quality of the sound are so perfect that the musicality just naturally forms without trying much
Leonid Kogan, der absolute Meister-Violnist aller Klassen!
8:48 entonação do som harmonico com perfeição.
Benchmark song for grandmaster. A total insane masterpiece is in display, freely, think how lucky we are to witness such performance
Impressssionante! Coisa de outro mundo! Um mago!
"Phi moment" begins at 7:28, which is 726 seconds(12:06) X .618 = 448.668 second mark(7.28 minutes), Paganini knew his stuff... Leonid is a master.
The 4th variation just absolutely drops my jaw. I know Segovia has arranged violin pieces, but I couldn’t even imagine arranging the 4th variation like that... wow. This is just amazing to see and hear as a classical guitarist ,
When he plays each note. You can hear his clarity with every bow stroke, and the notes following after each other. Everything from really hard cadenzas to even this piece it almost seems effortless to him. You can tell he really loved playing, or I think so at least.
Lord I discovered classical music, thank you
Is this the greatest violinist to have ever lived? What else was he capable of? This seems like cake to him(after years of practice) - but still, a lot of these techniques and notes are conceptually challenging by themselves... This is the kind of greatness to strive for, the more you reach, the closer you come.
I've heard someone compare Kogan with Oistrakh who said Oistrakh is the better violinist.........I disagree, the sound by Kogan is richer in tone, while both play every note perfectly.
Kogan was one of my favourite violinists ! At the time I was a violin student at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris, nous avions joué toutes les Caprices de Paganini, bien sûr! I also like very much Paganini's Sonata Nr.12 Op.3!----Ursula
Wow. The sound is so much fuller then most other editions.
+Zan Huang That's when you know you have a great violinist playing, and a great violin!
The pyrotechnical aspect of Kogan is actually overshadowed by the heart and soul that comes through his violin
The best interpreter of Paganini
MERAVIGLIOSO ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Such a beautiful and powerful piece. But the icing on the cake is the master violinist Leonid Borisovich Kogan.
Paganini reborn? The people that can attain this level of performance you can count on one hand and have fingers left over!
Paganini probably played much worse than the top violinists of 20th and 21th century. it's not a matter of talent or gift, technique and training methods evolve. Just imagine Paganini being the first person ever to use those techniques on a violin : there wasn't any other violinist to compare his playing to. Therefore being the first to successfully master those techniques and show his skills to others automatically made him the best of his time. In our generations we have kids that are trained since they are 4 years old to master Paganini caprices and newer pieces showcasing even more advanced techniques.
To add to the comment, wrong notes and bad intonation was also more accepted in the past b/c violin soloists were not held to the same level of perfection that we have today due to violinists like Kogan, Milstein, and Heifetz. If you listen to a recording of Sarasate playing the Bach Prelude, you could hear sub-par intonation towards the end (and he was considered one of the first very precise violinists!).
Fantastic, I love his performance
definitely my favorite interpretation
Niesamowite wykonanie - dziękuję.
Absolutely insane composition and Kogan perfectly shows off Paganini's monstrous genius.
One genius performing another genius's masterwork. Sorry for sounding redundant but this all leaves me gobsmacked!
It's unfortunate that the visuals are not in perfect sync with the soundtrack.
The soundtrack is a few frames behind of the visuals. Having worked on film sound editing, I just can't help myself!
Extraordinary!!!!
humans and perfection dont go together but this soulful man plays as if it's a possibility ! thanks for uploading this
Simplesmente fantástico
Please upload more of Kogan videos. This is so beautiful no words to describe beauty if this composition and clarity of This great violinist all times.
Unbelievable!!!!!!
Maravilloso!!!
We're going to film a virtuoso playing a difficult piece, how should we film it? In the dark of course!
Trust me - as a performing musician whom wears layers of dark, heavy clothing - we want as little light as possible.
That appears today's fashion.
I know I’m replying to a 2 year old comment, but like it’s surprisingly not that noticeable unless you’re trying to inspect the varnish, like the fingers and bow are in the shot the whole time
@@Rollich1 I'm not sure what the method of filming a man who died almost forty years ago has to do with "today's fashion".
It’s not an “authentic” filmed performance. Often, the bow strokes (visually) don’t match the recorded sound. We see short bows and hear longer ones, for example, after 3:00
¡ Genial y suprema interpretación !!!!!
This is murder right here... he came in and savagely just destroyed everyone... the ultimate mic drop right here
I love this Komposition and Kogans virtuosity in playing this marvellous Musik in all its Feinheit.
incrível! Que som maravilhoso!
This is absolutely beautiful!!
Even if the sound and the video is a bit out of sync, my balls still drop off...
