    Not a pretty face, but one hell of a violinist. Ruggiero Ricci didn't look like a violinist. He had the look of a prize-fighter. In fact, he looked a lot like Rocky Marciano. I'll never forget the time he visited the conservatory at Interlochen in 1978. The students were both honored & amazed when he dropped by. Then, he treated them to the 2nd half of Paganini's Caprices. I could write a book on Ricci but no on YT. His technique was bold & masterful. His tempi was always brisk. He never played it safe. He was old school & never used a crutch under his violin. His posture was perfect; legs at the right distance apart with most of his weight on the left leg; feet always firmly planted. Unlike many of today's violinists, he never made stupid-looking faces nor did he move about while playing. He was always pleasant to watch.
    This 4th concerto is one of my personal favorites. The adagio is my favorite movement, because it reminds me of a Sicilian funeral march. FarmerTice.com

      Wow! I thought it was only me who loves (or even knows) this concerto! I discovered a recording of this (Ricci's recording) at our local public library waiting for my parents to pick me up back in 7th grade (many decades ago), and have been absolutely enchanted by it ever since. I hope to play it some day. I working on #1 right now, but this is definitely on my bucket list.

    He had one hell of a left hand. I never cared much for his music making but he certainly knew everything about the technical side of the violin. The funny thing was, he was a very small man, and yet look at what he could do? Literally anything. He actually sounded good into his 80s. There's a video of his last recital out there - it's good! It was done 30 years later, in 2000.

      His understanding of the left hand mechanism is like no other. I took a semester of lesson with a prof who used to be one of his students, and learned a little bit of his technique.

Grande Ricci. Quanta saudade!

    Que saudade! Eu adoro o Ricci. O violinista e o ser humano. Ele não enfrenta as dificuldades. Ele atropela as dificuldades.Mas, nos cantabili, que som, que arco... Como ele gostava de tocar. Como ele tinha prazer de tocar. E o encore?

Grande Ricci!

    i've always been a big Ricci fan. i "get" him. a former teacher of mine was a childhood friend of his in San Francisco. but, i've always been frustrated by his sloppy play. he had so much talent, but he took it for granted and coasted on it. he smears through arpeggios without even try to get all the notes, uses a slappy, unappealing spicatto, etc. with more discipline, he could have still played "on the edge" and thrilled us all, but been that much more impressive.

    • @jaschenski

      Exactly, he was always touted as the "exemplary" exponent but many many people can (now!) play the Caprices better than he could, flawlessly.

      Many people told me I couldn't do it, but I have, I've played ABBA on my violin, by ear, I am so very greatful to The Soundstage for their support of my forray back into the hardest instrument to play there is. SUPPOSEDLY THE VIOLIN IS THE MOST DIFFICULT UNSTRUMENT , AND FOR A TIME IT SEEMED A VERY CAPRICIOUS, CONTRARY OBSTANANT, AWKWARD, MALLEVONANT, PAIN TO PLAY. HOWEVER I LEARNED FROM AN ORIENTAL WOMAN SOME THINGS THAT REIGNITED MY PASSION FOR THE INSTRUMENT. THINGS THAT WERE SORELY HELD OUT, AND BACK FROM ME AS I WAS GROWING UP. I THOUGJT WELL I CANT READ MUSIC, MY FATHER, MY MOTHER, MY GRANDFATHER, MY VIOLIN TEACHER JUST PUT SO DAMN MUCH PRESSURE ON ME, I COULD ONLY GIVE UP. SO I DID FOR A WHILE. BUT MY LOVE FOR THE INSTRUMENT KEPT KNAWING AWAY AT ME, SO YES I AM LIMITED IN MY REPERTWAR BUT THAT DOESNT MEAN I CANT PLAY THE VIOLIN. SHE SINGS FOR ME AND I LET HER TEACH ME BY EAR. MY MOTHER WAS VERY IMPATIENT FOR ME TO READ MUSIC. BUT IF I HAVE A PROPERLY TUNED INSTRUMENT IT DOESNT MATTER. PEOPLE MADE IT HARD FOR ME SO I COULDNT REALLY ENJOY THE VIOLIN. AND TO ME THAT IS THE BIGGEST WASTE. THEN THE ELECTRONIC TUNER CAME ON THE THE SCENE AND ITS A DIFFERENT BALL GAME JOSIE!

    opening solo and the camera shows the whole stage, even the fire exits, followed by Ruggiero close up from behind (??), and while he still soloes, it finally moves to the first frontal close-up. And even then, the camera op soon gets bored and whilst Ruggiero still throws his fireworks with fingers flying, the camera slowly pans out again to the fire exits. on either side....
    Why are cameramen almost invariably the village idiots?

      For everyone's information this video is a recording of an exceptionally fine live transmission of a concert performance, by RAI - world leaders in TV production
      In those early days of TV, cameras were quite different from today's digital kit - you can see one at bottom right in the wide shot of the orchestra: you can see how big it is so it would be impossible to move the cameras during the performance: lens systems were also much more primitive and might need to be changed during coverage : cameras had to be placed where they don't disturb performers or audience.
      The coverage in my opinion is sensitive and comprehensive giving viewers at home a close-up experience of the concert as well as a sense of the atmosphere in the hall

    • @rasputin1917
      @rasputin1917 7 лет назад +2

      I do appreciate all this. The outrageously unnecessary panning out (or in) and change-over from one shot to another has absolutely nothing to do with difficulties in camera positions or old equipment. Similar situations even in the 1920ies or 1930ies even were filmed far better. It glaringly looks far more like lack of commonsense judgment rather than anything else.

    • @rasputin1917
      @rasputin1917 7 лет назад +2

      Don't throw the subject sideways by claiming difficulties of where the camera is situated (only). The issue is where the camera points, not where it is.

    • @johnlawrence2757
      @johnlawrence2757 7 лет назад

      Rasputin Czar you have not understood at all: there was no TV of this scale in the 30s let alone the 20s.
      This live transmission will have been directed by a top world class film maker and Italian film makers at that time were the world leaders in motion picture creation. To me it is a superlative production with wonderful timing and sensitive cutting which must have been a real treat for the small TV audience who will have seen it.

    ... Nonostante il nome, Ruggiero Ricci era americano, nato a San Francisco. Certo c'era del sangue italiano, visto il nome... Credo però che non si possa parlare di "scuola italiana". E' stato allievo di Persinger e Kulenkampff, per cui... Volendo, tornando indietro nel tempo, prima o poi Corelli o Tartini o Geminiani o Locatelli si trovano sempre...

    I don't want to be mean, but it was maybe a little bit too difficult for the orchestra...

    bravissimo ma trovo che accardo sia insuperabile soprattutto neel'espressione che da' a paganini piu' musicale piu' sentita.

    Debbo dire che la interpretazione di ALDO FERRARESI, con Franco Gallini, parimenti virtuosistica, mi commuove di più specie nel movimento centrale. Ricci va molto sul virtuosistico, meno sul tenorile!
